Democrats introduce bill to ban anti-LGBTQ conversion therapy nationwide
The Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2017 would do nationally what seven states and the District of Columbia have already done.

Earlier this week, Congressional Democrats introduced the Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2017, a bill that would ban anti-LGBTQ conversion therapy nationwide. About 70 members of Congress said they support the bill.

The bill would classify conversion therapy and those practitioners who offer it as fraudulent. As you know, it’s been shown many times that conversion therapy does not work and is actually deeply harmful.

“The bill is very simple,” Lieu told The Washington Post. “It says it is fraud if you treat someone for a condition that doesn’t exist and there’s no medical condition known as being gay. LGBTQ people were born perfect; there is nothing to treat them for. And by calling this what it should be, which is fraud, it would effectively shut down most of the organizations.”

The Washington Post article linked above provides a really good history of conversion therapy, from its earliest opponents to its documented harmful effects to the politicians who still won’t say whether or not they’d support a ban. Give it a read this morning, and cross your fingers for positive change.

You know when you were studying history at school and you looked at 1930s germany and with your 20:20 hindsight you looked at it and all the terrible things happening in the build up - persecuting minorities, silencing academics, painting bad press as fraudulent, etc - and you said there were *so* many redflags so why didn’t people stop this all from happening??

Yeah, that.

Legally a house can be haunted and failure to disclose that the property is haunted can constitute fraudulent misrepresentation and is grounds for recession of contract. Meaning poltergeists are legally treated the same as termites or other pests.

This sounds like a cryptid post but this is actual U.S. case law

The issue came up in a case where a family bought a house and later discovered it was on a ghost tour. The buyer had no way of knowing the house was haunted since that’s no something buyer’s usually ask, but the previous owner knew and should have disclosed it. Since the owner had reported paranormal activity in both local and national publications describing at length how  haunted the house was court decided they couldn’t very well say there’s no such thing as ghosts now.

This resulted in legal precedent that recognizes the existence of haunted houses. Also the court’s opinion is probably the most entertaining legal opinion you will ever read.

Conservatives are trying to rebrand gay conversion therapy as “Christian counseling”

  • What’s in a name? Well, as it turns out, a lot.
  • Protesting a Democratic-backed bill that would classify practitioners of gay conversion therapy as “fraudulent,” online Christian group The Resurgent is claiming Democrats are trying to impinge on its religious freedom.
  • Rather than calling the practice of trying to change someone’s sexual orientation  "conversion therapy,“ they’ve relabeled it as ”Christian counseling.“
  • "There’s no medical condition known as being gay,” representative Ted Lieu, a sponsor of the bill, told the Washington Post
  • “LGBTQ people were born perfect; there is nothing to treat them for. And by calling this what it should be, which is fraud, it would effectively shut down most of the organizations.” Read more (5/2/17)

Kea are known for being utterly fearless around humans. This can be both a blessing and a curse; on the one hand, many tourists fall in love with the kea’s comical antics.  On the other, this fearlessness combined with the parrot’s natural curiosity has led them to cause significant damage to property.  Kea have been known to rifle through clothes, open backpacks, strip windshield wipers and rubber sealant from cars.  They are also unrepentant thieves, flying away with anything that catches their fancy.  One kea flew through the open window of a camper van, making away with a bag containing $900 of a tourist’s money.  And a Scottish tourist got the shock of his life when a kea flew off with his passport!  The tourist in question stated: “My passport is somewhere out there in Fiordland. The kea’s probably using it for fraudulent claims or something. I’ll never look at a kea in the same way.”

For the first time in history Serbian Police and Army publicly joins citizens protesting government corruption

Background:

Mr Vučić, 47, won the presidential election last Sunday with 55 per cent of the vote

The opposition alleges the vote was marred by “irregularities”, including muzzling of the media, as well as voter intimidation and bribes on election day.

Protesters have called Mr Vučić, who has been Prime Minister of Serbia since 2014, an autocrat, and have accused the Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) of corruption and of being instrumental in what they say was a fraudulent election.

according to this textbook, because president hayes, elected 1876, was elected as the result of several disputed votes, he was sometimes referred to as “his fraudulency”. and i sincerely love that

“your fraudulency, the cabinet is ready”

“jim i told you not to call me that”

“sorry, mr perjurer. i mean mr president”

“jim”

I have noticed that people often accuse Gemini, Libra and Pisces of being fake signs and I would just like to address this. Gemini, Libra and Pisces are dual signs meaning they have two pieces that make up their expression.

Gemini is depicted as the twins. It is a mutable, air sign of masculine polarity and ruled by the planet Mercury. Gemini is gregarious, intellectual, child-like and humourous. In esoteric astrology, Gemini is ruled by the planet Venus.

Libra is depicted as the scales. It is a cardinal, air sign of masculine polarity and ruled by the planet Venus. Libra is charming, savvy, pleasant and peaceful. Libra feels domicile (at home) in Venus.

Pisces is depicted as the fishes. It is a mutable, water sign of feminine polairy and ruled by the planet Neptune. Pisces is psychic, wise, imaginative and spiritual. Pisces is exalted in Venus.

Gemini, Libra and Pisces are all connected to the planet Venus. Venus rules over subjectivity (which includes beauty, values, standards and love). When you have three signs connected to subjectivity, there is bound to be conflict or rather confusion due to people having different values and standards. All of these signs are accused of being “two-faced”, “superficial”, “fake” and “shallow” because it is difficult to pinpoint their personality due to their connection to Venus. Honestly, I feel as though Pisces is the main sign being accused of fraudulance because it is ruled by Neptune and exalted in Venus. Neptune can create confusion and fog where it is placed. It has a deceptive quality. In additon, Pisces is a mutable sign meaning it is changeble, adaptable, a “chameleon”, yet inconsistent. With all of that in mind, is it important to note that Pisces is influenced by both Venus and Neptune while being mutable simultaneously. Overall, signs that are either influnced by Venus or Neptune and express their energy inconsistently are the main targets of being fraudulent.

With the close of Season 2 coming up, we wanted to open up a new blog for Attack on Titan polls! Since there hasn’t been a character popularity poll run since 2015 for the tumblr fandom, we thought this would be a good opportunity to bring one back.

Has the anime changed your perspectives on certain characters? What about current events in the manga? We’d love to see how developments in both mediums have potentially changed which characters we love the most!

Take the 2017 Tumblr Character Popularity Poll!

A few simple things:

  • To avoid repeat voting or fraudulent voting, we will not be using a typical poll format with multiple choice buttons. As the @snk-popularity-poll did when they ran the 2015 poll, we will also be taking votes by ask or submissions only. This way we can ensure no one is spamming the vote and everything is accounted for and honest.
  • Votes submitted via ask will remain confidential.
  • Votes submitted as submissions will be published - use this as an opportunity to gush about your faves if you so choose!
  • We would also like to remain anonymous so as to avoid perceptions of bias. This is a 100% neutral zone without any judgement or bias. We just want to see how you guys feel about the series, characters, and so on!
  • You may submit up to 5 characters for this poll, but no more than that. If you do not want to submit up to 5, that is also okay. If you only want to vote for 1 character this is just fine! Each character can only get 1 vote per person.
  • If you accidentally send us a submission with more than 5 votes we will contact you to clarify which 5 you actually want to be accounted for.
  • All characters are eligible, even the ones that were around for all but 2 panels.
  • The deadline for this poll will be July 15th. Once that date is reached we will no longer take submissions and will prepare in revealing the results of the poll.
  • We will show the current results on a weekly basis every Saturday! For those who are curious about how a poll is unraveling, we will try and keep you guys in the loop as the poll is ongoing! Encourage your friends to vote too!
  • Please expect to see more polls in the future around various things. We love fandom, and we love to see what you guys love as well!
  • Remember that this is a fandom positive space. Hate will not be allowed.

Please submit your votes via ask or submission. Remember, everything will remain confidential. Thank you for your participation and please signal boost if you can! :D

Trump’s War on the Courts, the Press, and the States

With congressional Republicans in the majority in Congress and unwilling to cross Donald Trump, the job of containing Trump’s incipient tyranny falls to three centers of independent power: the nation’s courts, its press, and a few state governments.

Which is why Trump is escalating attacks on all three.

The judiciary

After federal Judge James Robart – an appointee of George W. Bush – stayed Trump’s travel ban last Friday, Trump leveled a personal attack on the judge. “The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

This was followed by another, late Sunday night: “Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system.”

For a President to personally attack a federal judge who disagrees with him is a dangerous overstepping of presidential power.

As Alexander Hamilton famously wrote in the Federalist No. 78, the judiciary is the “least dangerous” branch of government because it has “no influence over either the sword or the purse.” It depends for its power and legitimacy on congress and the president.

Mike Pence tried to defend Trump, saying “the president of the United States has every right to criticize the other two branches of government. And we have a long tradition of that in this country.”

Wrong. While other presidents have publicly disagreed with court decisions, none before Trump has gone after individual judges with personal invective. None has tried to intimidate individual judges. None has questioned the legitimacy of the courts.

Trump is on the warpath against Robart because he defied Trump.

The press

Speaking to the U.S. Central Command on Monday, Trump veered off his prepared remarks to make a remarkable claim: The media was intentionally covering up reports of terrorist attacks.

“You’ve seen what happened in Paris, and Nice,” Trump told the assembled military officers. “It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that.”

Trump thereby elevated his advisor Kellyanne Conway’s “Bowling Green massacre” justification for his travel ban – a massacre that she claimed the press had failed to cover, but which in fact never occurred – to a higher and vaster level of conspiracy.

What could be the press’s reason for covering up terrorist attacks, in Trump’s mind? What is it that Trump assumed the military officers “understood?”

The only possible inference is Trump believes that the press – like Judge Robart – seeks to imperil our nation, because it doesn’t cow tow to Donald Trump.

The states

State governments pose a third line of defense against Trump. Several state attorneys general have taken Trump’s travel ban to court, and one particularly large Democratic state – California – has defied him on immigration and the environment. So Trump is directed his ire against these states as well.

In a televised interview Sunday, Trump threatened to take federal dollars away from California. “We give tremendous amounts of money to California … California in many ways is out of control …. We may have to [defund California]. Certainly that would be a weapon,” he told Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly,

A weapon for what? What could Trump have been talking about? The federal government doesn’t give tremendous amounts of money to California, at least not net dollars. In fact, Californians send more tax dollars to the federal government each year than the state gets back from the federal government.

Fiscally, California isn’t “out of control.” Since 2013, the state has operated with a budget surplus. That’s more than can be said for the federal government. Or for Trump’s own business, for that matter.

Trump’s real beef is California is independent of him. It has defied Trump with its high environmental standards and “sanctuary” cities. Even worse, from his standpoint, its citizens voted against him in the 2016 election by 2 to 1, for a total of over 4 million votes. He can’t seem to get this out of his mind.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that millions of those votes were fraudulent. Last week, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer identified California as one of the “bigger states” that merit a federal probe into election fraud, adding, “That’s where I think we’re gonna look.”

But Trump has no evidence of voter fraud in California, or any other state for that matter.

For Trump, evidence is irrelevant. California needs to be taught a lesson – just as do Judge Robart and other members of the federal judiciary who defy him, just as do journalists and media outlets that criticize him. And what is that lesson? That they dare not cross Trump.

The judiciary, the press, and California are major centers of resistance to Trump, because they are independent of him. So he’s escalating his attacks on them.

Trump doesn’t want any resistance. He wants total control.

A Whole Family is Missing in France

The last time anyone heard of a member in the Troadec family was on February 16, 2017. That day, mother Brigitte (49) called her bank to report that her daughter Charlotte’s (18) debit card had been fraudulently used to pay for online videogames.

When police in the town of Nantes, in France, were alerted of the fact no one knew about the Troadecs, they investigated their home and found a lot of odd, and certainly chilling, things. They described the house as been “frozen in time”, with dishes in the sink and still wet clothes in the washing machine. All the beddings had been stripped and were hanging up to dry. Brigitte and father Pascal’s (49) vehicles were parked in the driveway, but son Sebastien’s (21) Peugeot wasn’t there. Also missing were the family’s tooth and hair brushes and everyone’s cell phones, except for Sebastien’s, who was found inside the house, with blood on it. The chargers have been left behind, and none of the devices have been used since February 17th.

Police also found traces of blood on the staircase that were matched to Pascal, Brigitte and Sebastien. It appeared like someone had tried to scrub it clean.

Then, on March 1st, a jogger in Dirinon, a town three hours away from Nantes, found a pair of trousers and health insurance card. Both belong to Charlotte. The following day, Sebastien’s car was located in a church parking lot in Saint Nazare, an hour away from Nantes. The car appeared to have been cleaned and the carpeting of the trunk was torn out, but they found a bit of blood inside the vehicle. Police have found other things scattered around, including some books that belong to Pascal.

Authorities are still searching and investigating, but they are operating under the premise that a crime has been committed. Their main suspect at the moment is Sebastien, the son, who has a history of mental illness and was once sentenced to community service after he made threats online in 2013.

Story in development.

Among the many, many reasons I like the idea of Lyra Erso as a rejected Jedi-hopeful relegated to the Jedi Engineering Corps is because it gives her a reason to know Saw Gerrera before the rise of the Empire.

Also, I just like imagining graduate student Lyra being assigned to answer all the inquiry transmissions received by the Corps. Most of them are boring—scientists across the galaxy double-checking their facts, senators or contractors requesting results of geological surveys, the occasional oddball request for treasure maps, or a list of which mineraloids are poisonous if ingested.

But one day, she gets an inquiry from a man on Onderon. And though he’s circumspect about it, it’s very clear to her that he’s talking about making chemical weapons. (The war against the Separatists has been raging for some time now. She’s only surprised it’s taken someone this long to ask.)

She opens a new transmission, and keys out:

Dear Master Gerrera,

Thank you for your inquiry to the Jedi Agricultural Corps, Engineering Division. The official uses of the cyanogen silicate compound known as “Sith’s breath” are limited to the construction of Celegian life support chambers, due to the compound’s extreme toxicity to most carbon-based sentient life. Additionally, the components are difficult to procure, and their synthesization without proper licensure under Galactic Republican Statute 1184.2-4 Aleph constitutes fraudulent business practices and illegal production of a controlled chemical compound.

The Jedi Order must warn you that should you pursue this course of action, it will have no choice but to enforce the law to the fullest extent of its authority.

On an unrelated note, baradium bisulfate is an accessible liquid compound, used frequently in mining. Unlike cyanogen silicate, it does not sublimate at 20°C, but it is highly unstable and a very small amount can do a surprising amount of damage. Several years ago, a careless engineering trainee did not calibrate a suspension field carefully, and leveled a small mountain.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have further questions.

May the Force be with you,
Lyra Inair, Geological Engineer, Jedi AgriCorps

She expects that to be the last of it, and so she’s extremely surprised when he replies directly. Less surprised when she realizes he’s asking how one goes about constructing a suspension field. Possibly one that would destabilize with some sort of trigger or timer or maybe on impact…?

And they keep—writing one another. Even after she’s moved off the transmissions desk, to actual geological work. Rocks and weapon mechanics turn to small talk, turn to little details of their lives, turn to the Force and the Republic. He talks about his sister, about the warfront; she complains about the internal politics of the Corps and Galen (though he’s not Galen, yet, he’s just the handsome Republican engineer with cheekbones like sheered silicate). They argue theology, and justice, and violence. She cries for him, when his sister dies. They—are friends.

Saw is the only one she tells, when she decides to turn her back on the Order. She is in love and Galen has friends in Coruscant, a prestigious job with an engineering guild—

Please do not stop writing me, she begs.

I will be here, Saw writes, if you ever need me.

People ask my daughter questions about her gender repeatedly, the author laments. “[T]he message they send is that a girl cannot look and act like her and still be a girl.” This is a timeless message that has been told to girls, boys and non-binary people in the United States always and has nothing to do with trans-ness. We question the “realness” of people’s gender all the time — especially people who are Black, other people of color, people with disabilities, all trans people. This is not happening to the author’s child because some people support trans kids, this is happening and has always happened because of white supremacy and patriarchy. The author’s issue is not with trans people or trans-ness, or it shouldn’t be, it is with enforcement of gender norms and the impulse to situate people outside of real girlhood or boyhood because of who they are or how they look or how they act. But connecting this to the affirmation of trans young people in their genders is reckless and dangerous and wrong. Trans youth are dying because society is telling them, telling us, that we are fake. Trans women and femmes of color are being murdered because the impulse is to believe that trans-ness is fraudulent, that our bodies are threats. A white young person being asked questions about her gender is not a new problem and it is not a problem that should be blamed on trans people or trans affirmative shifts in society or medicine.
If you're ever called by your bank's fraud department hang up and call them back.

I got a call from someone claiming to be from fraud department of my bank over the weekend. The call showed up on my caller ID as US Bank which is how I have it saved in my contacts. He said there was a fraudulent charge from American Airlines and I was on that their website booking a flight about an hour prior to the call. For a moment I thought it was legit but then he asked for a pin #. Just be careful because the caller ID makes it seem real. The actual fraud department said they have seen this multiple times with the caller ID showing as the bank. :/

here are some traits you can give your characters to make them ‘dark and edgy’ without making them racist/homophobic/transphobic/islamophobic/etc.

harrehlouyah  asked:

Just curious if you did a break down of ESNY lyrics. id like to see your take on it.

I haven’t, but howbow now?

A lot of fans think Ever Since New York is about that unholiest of fauxmances, Haylor, since the primary stuntin’ took place in NYC. Listening to the lyrics, I agree with that.

Picture it: NYC, December 2012. 1D is at a career high, having played to a sold out Madison Square Garden crowd. This level of hotness must have smelled like blood in the water to fake ass fame vampire, Taylor Swift and her team. So commence fakelationship stuntin’!

I’ll show you what skeeved me out the most. The hotel ho strolls:

They’d make sure to pap Harry coming and going so that fans would infer that the s-e-x must have surely taken place. Classy. This is how music is marketed. Why God?

Meanwhile, all this fakery was apparently taking a toll on Louis:

And the Elounor awkwardness was later mocked by Grimmy:

And it only got worse from there. By New Year’s Eve, Tay Tay was reveling in this Times Square look-at-me spectacle:

Harry, not so much:

This was the point where 1DHQ really dug in with the closeting. Payzer 2.0 launched December 2012, too. Not a coincidence. This is where reality must have really set in. And this is just based on what we can piece together. God only knows what kinds of conversations took place bts to put all this in place. But I can imagine it was dehumanizing and demoralizing. Aggressive hetero stuntin’ would become the new normal for 1D.

So that’s the kind of stuff that would’ve influenced ESNY. It’s easy to understand why he still feels some type of way about it.

Harry:

Tell me something, tell me something
You don’t know nothing, just pretend you do
I need something, so tell me something new
Choose your words ‘cause there’s no antidote
For this curse or what’s it waiting for
Must desert you just before you go

Harry is my people because he comes out the gate swinging. I’m guessing this first verse is directed at Taylor. Being older and having been in the business longer, Harry is looking to her to make him understand why this needs to happen. He wants her to help him make peace with it. But Taylor is the monster showbiz created. She has no wisdom to offer. So Harry is left grappling with this closeting, which feels like a curse. And “must desert you before you go” feels like a reference to the end of Haylor, where she played the role of good girl who got dumped…again.

There she is alone on a boat…deserted. This is what had to happen before she could go for good. It’s a reference to the fakery–knowing how things will play out before they even happen.

Oh, tell me something I don’t already know
Oh, tell me something I don’t already know

Again, Harry’s desperate for something more profound. I’m sure his team was telling him this was good for him, that it was in his best interests personally and professionally. But Harry isn’t really buying it.

Brooklyn saw me, empty avenues
There’s no water inside this swimming pool
Almost over, that’s enough from you
I’ve been praying, I never did before
Understand I’m talking to the walls
And I’ve been praying ever since New York

Harry was able to venture out into the boroughs, unbothered. But in Manhattan? It was lights, cameras, stunt time! And Haylor is like a empty swimming pool: an artifice without purpose. Just like a pool needs water to fulfill its purpose, a relationship needs a real emotional bond to fulfill its purpose. And of course, there wasn’t one. Harry’s counting the days until Taylor sails her fraudulent ass away on that boat. Enough! Same Harry. Same. These are trying times and Harry’s literally praying his way through it–searching for strength where he hadn’t looked before. That’s how profoundly hurtful this experience is for him And he’s been praying ever since. We know why.
