On July 1, 1934, FDR boarded the USS Houston to begin his three week journey to the Territory of Hawaii. During the cruise FDR and his party made stops in the Bahamas, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Colombia, Panama, Cocos Island and Clipperton Island. These stops included visits with foreign leaders and dignitaries, sightseeing through various countries and lots of fishing. FDR landed in Hawaii on July 24th to begin his historic visit.
You know William Powhida and his colorful painted lists of rants, instructions, jokes and truths. Here they are supersized and in oil paint.
“My studio practice is based in drawing, which I like to think of more as a thought process than a way of working. My work tends to draw out a concept, often a critique, through some formal means. Primarily, I’m known for drawings of trompe l'oeil lists and letters authored in the voice of “Powhida,” a sensationalist, self-loathing and unreliable narrator… While it doesn’t take much to get me drawing, following a critical inquiry to unusual and uncomfortable ends is where the energy is, like having a long conversation about coyotes with a taxidermist.” - William Powhida to The L Magazine’s Paul D'Agostino
11.13.14 Mantzoukas and…. at UCB Franklin. Haven’t been to one of these in forever, but I’m so glad we made it to this one! Jason Mantzoukas had his long time friends Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair join him for an hour-long monoscene that had it all - unrequited love, eagles, catfights, loaded descriptions of vomit, and a fused labia. There was even a Q&A at the end.
