Banned Books Week 2013, Continued

In honor of Banned Books Week, the Children’s Services and Fox Library Staff have decided to pose with some of our favorite banned books.

Here’s Librarian Yvonne with And Tango Makes Three, which was challenged for homosexuality, religious viewpoint, and being unsuitable for its target age group.  Richardson’s picture book tells the true story of two male penguins who hatch and parent a baby chick at New York’s Central Park Zoo.  Tango, which was also awarded many accolades, has topped the most frequently challenged booklist for several years.

Cakes + Trucks = A Winning Combination!  If you haven’t read Chihiro Nagawa’s Who Made This Cake, what are you waiting for?  Come check out one of our copies today!

As an added bonus, Who Made This Cake will be featured prominently in two of this week’s storytimes!  Join Laura on Monday at 11:00 at Robbins (Storytime ages 2.5 - 3.5) or on Tuesday at 10:00 at Fox (Storytime ages 2 - 5) to see more of this exciting tale, along with many other truck books!

Robbins and Fox Libraries: The Perfect Summertime Field Trip Destination

Attention, preschools!  Are you looking a fun, local, educational, and AIR-CONDITIONED field trip this summer?  How about a visit to the library?  Both Robbins and Fox Libraries are great destinations. Our children’s librarians will happily work with you to schedule a time to give your tots a special storytime and library tour.  Just call the Robbins Children’s Room at 781.316.3234 or the Fox Library at 781.316.3198 to schedule a visit.

It’s a wonderful way to introduce young children to the magic of the library… but you don’t have to take our word for it!  Here are some comments from the kids at Arlington Height’s Nursery School after their visit to the Fox Library last week.

I liked our visit to the Fox Library because…

  • because everyone loved our sculptures.*
  • Because the librarian read stories to us.
  • Because we went in groups around the library and the teachers read books to us.
  • Listening to the stories.
  • That we had a storytime.  And did you know?  Laura the Librarian is my Mommy’s friend!
  • The story of the fish.  I know it’s called Swimmy.
  • That we got to read books.
  • That we saw our sculptures.*
  • Going on the bus.
  • That Laura read that story about the jellybeans.
  • Riding on the bus.
  • That I saw our sculptures.
  • Seeing our sculptures.*
  • When Laura read us the books.
  • That we split up into groups and read more books that the kids picked.

Sometimes, we can provide exhibit space for students’ artwork.  Call us for more information.
