But apart from my transformations, I was happier than I had ever been in my life. For the first time ever, I had friends, three great friends. Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew and, of course, your father, Harry, James Potter. Now, my three friends could hardly fail to notice that I disappeared once a month. I made up all sorts of stories. I told them my mother was ill, and that I had to go home to see her, I was terrified they would desert me the moment they found out what I was. But of course, they, like you, Hermione, worked out the truth. And they didn’t desert me at all. Instead they did something for me that would make my transformations not only bearable, but the best times of my life. They became Animagi.
Could Planets Like Those Imagined in Star Wars Be Real??
Look at what we’ve found so far.
Is your favorite Star Wars planet a desert world or an ice planet or a jungle moon?
It’s possible that your favorite planet exists right here in our galaxy. Astronomers have found over 3,400 planets around other stars, called “exoplanets.”
Some of these alien worlds could be very similar to arid Tatooine, watery Scarif and even frozen Hoth, according to NASA scientists.
Find out if your planet exists in a galaxy far, far away or all around you.
Planets With Two Suns
Were you going to the Tosche station to pick up some power converters? Hold on a minute and learn about Kepler-16b, 200 light-years from Earth. It’s the first honest-to-goodness planet ever found where you could watch two suns set like Luke. George Lucas himself even blessed its nickname ‘Tatooine.’ It’s not a perfect comparison: Kepler-16b is a cold gas giant roughly the size of Saturn. But don’t worry, kid.
The best part is that Tatooine aka Kepler-16b was just the first. It has family. A LOT of family. Half the stars in our galaxy are pairs, rather than single stars like our sun. If every star has at least one planet, that’s billions of worlds with two suns. Billions! Maybe waiting for life to be found on them.
If you’re like Finn and want to know why everyone wants to go back to Jakku desert planets, get this: Star Wars may be reflecting the real universe. Desert worlds are not only a very real possibility, but we think they are probably very common. They can be hot, like the fictional Tatooine and Jakku, or cold, like Jedha in “Rogue One” or our real planet Mars.
Perhaps it’s not so weird that both Luke and Rey grew up on planets that look suspiciously like each other. If you’re scouring the universe for a place to settle, you have a good chance of finding a desert planet.
There is a Hoth in our galaxy! Though not the same Hoth from “The Empire Strikes Back” (no invading Imperials, for one). The icy super-Earth reminded scientists so much of the frozen Rebel base they nicknamed it “Hoth.” The planet’s real name is OGLE 2005-BLG-390L.
Our galaxy’s Hoth is too cold to support life as we know it. But life may evolve under the ice of a different world, or a moon in our solar system.
We’re currently designing a mission to look for life under the crust of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. We’re pretty sure ity won’t look like tauntauns, if it exists.
Both the forest moon of Endor and
Takodana, the home of Han Solo’s favorite cantina in “Force Awakens,” are green
like our home planet. But astrobiologists think that plant life on other worlds could be red,
black, or even rainbow-colored!
In August 2016, astronomers from
the European Southern Observatory announced the discovery of Proxima Centauri b, a planet only four light-years
away from Earth, which orbits a tiny red star.
The light from a red star, also
known as an M dwarf, is dim and mostly in the infrared spectrum (as opposed to
the visible spectrum we see with our sun). And that could mean plants with
wildly different colors
than what we’re used
to seeing on Earth. Or, animals that see in the near-infrared.
The next few years will
see the launch of a new generation of spacecraft to search for planets around
other stars. TESS
and the James
Webb Telescope will go into space in 2018, and WFIRST in the
mid-2020s. That’s one step closer to finding life.
You don’t need to visit a galaxy
far, far away to find wondrous worlds. Just visit this one … there’s plenty to
Making good progress on this painting of an Echeveria hybrid. I spotted this plant at the Rockefeller Center desert installation earlier this year. Today I found a similar plant - that’s Echeveria ‘Neon Breakers’, another hybrid Echeveria, in the corner. The colors are a bit different but the frills are so similar that it’s a helpful painting reference!
Humans have invented galactic space travel, and find a deserted alien planet. Archives had been found, and the last transmission was “Test subjects 676-976 have escaped, evacuation started” a picture is attached, and it is of a group of humans.
Few sights evoke the American West more than the saguaro cactus, found only in the Sonoran Desert. Saguaro National Park, close to the urban center of Tucson, Arizona, protects these majestic cacti. At the park, you can hike through fantastic desert scenery year-round. #Sunset photo courtesy of David Olsen.
Ok, so when team Voltron find Blue in s1e1 she flies around in broad daylight in the line of sight of the Garrison, and it’s the day after they rescue Shiro so the Garrison probably wasn’t still on lock down at this point.
As a fully operational school, surely someone apart from Iverson and his off-sider saw the giant robot lion flying around less than a kilometre from the main building?
I have this headcanon that Pidge somehow connects the ship to the internet, and as Keith is checking in on all his favourite conspiracy theory boards, he sees a new thread linking the ‘mysterious flying shape in the desert’ with some cave paintings found near a giant hole in millennia-old rock and the disappearance of three Galaxy Garrison students.
The piece de resistance is some really grainy footage of Blue some student shot on their phone.
Keith: Pidge, come look at this
Pidge, from over his shoulder: Keith… omg… we’re cryptids

rey’s past was a mystery, even to her. when she was a little girl, she was found wandering down a highway in the desert, miles away from the nearest town with no memory of who she was or where she’d come from. her dreams were always plagued by strange, alien figures and bright lights that seemed too vivid to just be products of her imagination. rey never investigated her suspicions, at least not until after she joined the rio (republic intelligence office) as a junior agent. her natural aptitude at profiling and skill with technology put her on the fast track to an illustrious career. however, after her first major case, she got side tracked by an unofficial ‘x-files’ project. these x-files documented years of cases with one thing in common: conventional science couldn’t explain them. rey quickly found herself delving into the paranormal hoping for answers to questions she’d been asking all her life.
finn, a straitlaced, driven junior agent was also a rising star in science division of the rio until assistant director ben solo personally reassigned him to the x-files. his assignment? observe and evaluate rey’s work to determine the validity of the x-files. he was intent on debunking her work, but rey’s steadfast belief in a truth beyond anything either of them could imagine shook his faith. he found himself questioning the motives of his superiors and their dedication to obstructing the x-files investigations. when the x-files brought to light his own forgotten childhood with the knights of ren, an extremist cult dedicated to the worship of an alien “force”, matters were complicated even further.
in the face of their warring pasts and presents, government cover ups, and an unknowable evil lurking on the fringes of their reality, finn and rey find that, in order to get to the truth, they can trust no one but each other.
I don’t want to rain on anybody’s fandom fun but I find it kind of hilarious everybody pegs Keith as resident conspiracy theorist when like
Keith, in episode 1: So I just felt weirdly compelled to go out in the desert and look for something, found carvings that led me to anticipate some kind of arrival and I knew I had to go meet whoever was coming and get them away from the Garrison. It turned out aliens were involved but that’s really not that important? Also I’ll just talk about it like all of this is normal and be mildly put-out when someone makes fun of me. Weird pseudo-clairvoyance is just a normal thing that happens to everyone, right?
Pidge, in episode 1: I infiltrated a government space exploration program by falsifying my identity and secretly built equipment to listen for alien radio chatter which I regularly sneak out of the dorms to do. I did this because said government space program is definitely lying to me about the disappearance of this space mission and the one time I told someone about it, I specifically told them that the world as they knew it was about to change.
I mean, in general, Pidge puts an incredibly high priority about finding information and getting answers- the whole green paladin ‘inquisitive’ thing- while Keith is much more that he has a vague, but strong-held feeling of something that’s right and he’ll pursue that single goal, details don’t matter to him nearly as much. People talk about his “conspiracy chart” but all he really had there was pictures of the carvings and a map where he seems to have narrowed down exactly where the energy was coming from.
So I guess, proposed alternative measure: Pidge who is determined to chase weird stuff and Keith who is just. the incredibly ride-or-die friend about it.
Pidge opens the door to Keith’s room at 3AM “KEITH C’MON I THINK THIS PLANET HAS A GHOST”
Keith is like. half awake and already putting on his jacket. “jeez, okay, let me find where we left the camera last time.”

Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado gets its name from the fantastic remains of extinct animals embedded in the rocks. Petroglyphs tell the stories of ancient cultures. Later, homesteaders and outlaws found refuge here. Today, the mountains, desert and untamed rivers flowing in deep canyons support an array of life. Whether your passion is science, adventure, history or scenery, Dinosaur National Monument offers much to explore. Photo from the Cub Creek road by National Park Service.
The perfectly proportioned Texas toad [Anaxyrus speciosus] is a bug-eyed little native of the southern United States, as well as parts of Mexico. The ultimate desert survivor, these toads are frequently found on sand and have been known to take advantage of other animals’ burrows to escape the daytime heat. Images by

I have no doubt that Keith is gonna grow into a good leader but like last time Shiro vanished without a body to be found he freaked out and dropped out of school to wander through the desert for a year lookin for ufos so Shiro is kidding himself if he thinks Keith is gonna spend one minute of his time in command not looking for a way to bring him back. Rest in Peace????? Not on Keith’s watch bitch.
