foster-system

anonymous asked:

So basically you support the murder of babies

I support a woman’s right to choose whether she wants to be pregnant. She may have been raped, she may not be financially capable, she may have a broken home, she may have an abusive family enviroment or spouse, she may have been tricked, she may have been lied to about whether he was wearing protection, she may have had her BC fail, she may know she cannot care for a child while also not wanting to throw another child into the shit fest that is the adoption/foster system…. whatever it is, I support that choice.

i rlly wished we lived in a world where politicians saying they’re pro family/family values meant,, like, ‘child abuse needs to be stopped’ or ‘we need to make the foster system better’ and not 'we’re queerphobic bigots who think LGBT+ people don’t deserve basic human decency’

I feel like people are thinking that My Immortal was a genuine example of Rose Cristo’s writing when she was 15 yrs old, but the official description for her memoir that just came out confirms what I have always believed, that my immortal was a joke/trollfic, although the reason why she wrote it is something no one would have ever guessed:

A heartbreaking and wryly hopeful memoir of surviving the NYC foster care system―and how one girl’s “masterpiece of literary disaster” (io9.com) connected her to a community that could help her find her lost brother.

In the early 2000s, Rose Christo was separated from her five-year-old brother and shuttled between foster homes in Brooklyn to the Bronx and back again. Desperate to be reunited with her sibling, she traveled the five boroughs, unable to find any trace of him, as New York state’s child care agencies failed to help her time and again.

Then, with the help of one beloved foster sister, Rose created an infamous piece of Harry Potter fanfiction titled My Immortal, posting it online under the pseudonym XXXbloodyrists666XXX. The “forty-four chapters and 22,000 words of hysterical, typo-laden hyperbole” (BuzzFeed.com) went viral as the most notoriously terrible fanfic ever read by the community. For years, fans, writers, and editors researched, debated, and contested the story’s origin and its mysterious author: was this grammatically-challenged rant actually written by a suicidal Goth teenager named Tara Gilesbe living in Dubai, or was this a hoax perpetrated by a group of professional authors making fun of fanfiction?

The truth is a gripping, compelling, and surprisingly funny story of how a young girl infiltrated and used the fan fiction community to search for her brother by baiting their attention with a deliberately badly written tale, creating a ten-year mystery that garnered pop culture media attention and remained unsolved―until now.

they call her maid maleen

for the first few trembling years of her life, she is a princess. she is the daughter to the king, born of his beloved wife and of her visage. her dark eyes have the appearance of a smoky quarts and her mother carefully twists her mass of black hair into a hundred small braids down her back. she is a beautiful, quiet child, and for a while all is well. they call her princess maleen.

then her mother dies. it seems as if the king is determined to bury his love for his daughter along with his queen. he moves her to a different wing of the castle, and refuses to see her. her tutors are let go, and the nobles’ children are no longer allowed to play with her. only the maids look after her now.

the king remarries. the new queen gives birth to a son, and maleen is forgotten completely, banished from a home she still resides in and a life she can now only watch unfold.

the maids take care of her, braid her hair and kiss the blisters on her fingers, teach her to scrub at porcelain and polish silver, to clean a fireplace and mop polished marble floors.

they call her maid maleen.

~

the king has a son by his new wife, and then a daughter. they are pale and fair-haired like their mother, with only their dark eyes to show they are the king’s children. but they inherit none of their parents’ beauty, have faces that don’t look quite right and bodies that get stuck between gangly and chubby and never settle into one or the other. princess gisella and prince jan are privately regarded as unfortunate products of a lovely union.

maid maleen spends long hours working, and has neither the time nor funds for creams to soften her skin or oils to care for her hair, has never used face powder or lip color.

maid maleen is twenty three years old, and the most beautiful woman in the kingdom.

her braids are wrapped carefully atop her head, but when she lets them loose they hang past her hips. her dark skin is made even darker thanks to long hours working in the palace garden, and her eyes have never lost that same curious light. she walks straight and strong, years of hard labor giving her muscles and definition to her body that she never would have had as a princess. boys and girls give her long, considering looks and flirtatious smiles, and nobles have to double-take when she passes them by.

no one speaks of it anymore. but maid maleen looks ever more like her beautiful late mother, has the same eyes as her father, and dressing in ill-fitting cast offs and running her ragged can’t hide the truth.

maid maleen is the king’s daughter.

she has accepted her life as a maid in the palace she was one day set to inherit, and tries to see it as a gift. she sleeps with who she likes, may marry whichever of the charming boys from the city who’s smile she likes best. in the maids who raised her she has more mothers than she has fingers, and perhaps she longs for the days when she was a small princess, when she was the apple of her parents’ eye, when the whole of their nation was to be hers to inherit.

but then the blacksmith’s daughter lets her hands linger a little too long on her wrists, and maleen knows that she won’t be sleeping alone tonight. there are some things that worth more to her than a throne she was born to. she doesn’t miss the little girl she used to be.

until.

tensions have always run high between their kingdom and the neighboring one – too many squabbles over borders, over trade agreements, over patrols, over anything and everything the kings can find a reason to be upset about, it seems like. so when prince wolfgang is sent over, the whole palace is abuzz. the prince seems determined to inherit a peaceful land, and is coming over to talk with the king to do it.

maleen does not care for princes. nor for nobles of any rank, in fact. she remembers how they turned on her, she sees the small acts of pettiness and cruelty they thoughtlessly inflict on their servants, and she wants nothing to do with it. commoners may not be as educated as nobles, may not have as many objects to call their own, but maleen finds she prefers their company to that of lords. she’s uninterested in this prince, which is perhaps why she’s the one that gets sent to his rooms. her moms can trust that she at least won’t fawn over him.

“sir wolfgang,” she murmurs, pushing open his door and giving a low curtsy, keeping her eyes trained on his mud covered boots. “is there anything you require?”

silence. she can only stay bent in a curtsey so long before she loses patience. she’s almost given up on him, is about to cut her losses and call it a night when he says, hesitant, “queen sabine?”

her mother’s name is punch to her gut, and her head snaps up at the sound of it, the rolling fire of her temper bubbling just below her skin. “i am maid maleen,” she snaps, then tacks on “your highness,” after a moment’s consideration.

his cloak is half unbuttoned as he stares at her with a slack mouth. she supposes he would not look unhandsome if he were not currently doing his best to imitate a frog. he appears to be only a handful of years older than she is, and if she were not furious she would be impressed that he remembers her mother well enough to see sabine in her.

“maleen,” he repeats, and for a moment she wonders if he will recognize her as well, but he only says, “my apologies. if you would help me with my cloak, i would be much obliged.”

she’s instantly suspicious. she’s met nice nobles before, ones that were considerate and remembered her name and thanked her when she brought them wine. but she’s never met a nice prince before – they’re always of the worst sort. “yes, your highness,” she says, and the cloak is soaked through and clinging, it’s no wonder he’s struggling with it. once she’s gotten it off she hangs it to dry, then goes back to him. she slaps away his numb, struggling fingers and undoes the rest of the buckles and loops of his overly complicated clothing. she’s gotten down him down to an undershirt and pants when his hands grab hers. she blinks and looks up. he has freckles dusting across his nose.

“this is inappropriate,” he says, but honestly she’s stripped a lot of nobles, it wasn’t weird until he took her hands and looked at her like no one’s ever looked at her before.

“yes, your highness,” she agrees, and takes a step back. she places his clothes in front of a fire, curtsies, and leaves. she can feel the weight of his gaze on her all the way back to her room.

wolfgang continues his diplomatic agenda, having long meetings with the royal family. after, maleen goes and tends to him, setting out his food and taking care of his clothes, straightening up any mess that he’s made. at first he’s quiet, and he just watches her, but he quickly discovers that maleen has opinions and thoughts and isn’t afraid to share them. soon they’re debating the finer points of trade routes and arguing the effectiveness of a sliding tax scale, and maleen comes to cherish the evenings she spends with the prince, likes the way he speaks to her and looks at her, likes the shape of his smile.

weeks in she enters his room, dinner steaming in her hands and eager to continue their conversation about state funded orphanages versus a state funded foster system. he’s pacing and tense, shoulder stiff. “wolfgang,” she sets down the food and wipes her hands on her apron, “is something wrong?”

“is it true?” he asks, and he’s not looking at her. he’s always looked at her before.

“is what true?” she flinches away from his coldness, is already preparing to retreat and hide and beg someone else to watch over him.

he turns to her, and she’s baffled by the mixture of hope and anger on his face. “are you the king’s daughter? are you princess maleen?”

she takes a step back, “i am maid maleen.”

“please,” he follows her as she steps away from him, and her back hits the wall. he stops when he’s almost close enough to touch. “my father sent me here with the goal to seal our new treaty with a marriage. he expects me to marry princess gisella. but if you are the daughter of the king – then he will allow me to marry you instead!”

“who says i want to marry you?” she retorts, but he gets on bended knee and she freezes.

he holds a hand for her own, and against every bit of logic, she gives it to him. “maleen, i’ve never felt this way about anyone. i was willing enough to enter a loveless marriage before i knew what true love is, but now i do, and i can’t go back. marry me.”

she wants to. she thinks she loves him. she hadn’t been planning to fall in love with anyone. “i am the king’s daughter,” she tells him, “but i am no princess. i haven’t been a princess in a long time.”

he brings her hand to his mouth so he can kiss each one of her knuckles, “then we’ll have to change that.”

~

wolfgang goes to the king to make his case, to return maleen to her birthright and allow her to marry him.

it goes even worse than maleen had feared.

her father is furious. he’s so angry at the audacity of this request that prince wolfgang is thrown from the kingdom. so incensed is he, that guards drag maleen from her bed in the middle of the night and throw her into a tower. the door closes shut behind them, and she bangs on it and screams but no one comes for her.

there are no windows, and only one door with a sliding metal grate in the bottom. she’s high in the tower, she thinks, from the number of steps she’d been forced to climb, but she stands on a dirt floor. the room contains only the bare minimum needed for survival, and nothing more.

once a week food is slid through the slot in the door. she has to be careful, because if she eats it too fast they will not provide more, she will just starve. days turn to weeks turn to months, and she despairs of ever being let out of this tower. months turn to years, and she gives up hope entirely of leaving this tower. she considers refusing to eat, killing herself slowly through starvation, because death is preferable to life locked in this tower.

one night there’s a scuffle, and shouting, and for the first time since she was shoved inside the door opens. there’s a guard standing there, and princess gisella tentatively steps inside. “maid ma – i mean, maleen?”

maleen stares. this is the first time she’s seen another person in years, and suddenly for all the screaming she’d done she can’t find her voice. gisella takes another cautious step forward, “maleen, please – we don’t have much time.” she holds out her hand, “come with me.”

gisella is sixteen now. although she’ll never be a great beauty, she’s grown into many of the features that she was once mocked for. “where?” she asks, but takes gisella’s hand and lets her lead them down the twisting staircase. anyplace is better than the tower.

“i’m to be married in a week’s time to prince wolfgang.” maleen feels a sharp pain go through her chest. had wolfgang forgotten her? their farce of a romance was such a quick, shallow thing. she was a fool to fall for it in the first place. “i’m not going to show up. you are.”

she stares, “what?”

“wolfgang started a war over father locking you in the tower,” she explains, “but eventually it got to a point where neither could justify it, so our father and wolfgang’s decided our union would mean peace between our countries, as intended. but i don’t want to marry prince wolfgang, and he does not want to marry me.”

“i don’t understand,” she hadn’t paid much attention to the girl when they were in the palace together, and she’s regretting that now.

they finally reach the end of the tower. it’s the first time she’s breathed fresh air in years. she tries not to get distracted by it, and instead focuses on the carriage to her left, and the pure black mare laden like a pack mule on her right. “i’m leaving,” gisella says, “i don’t want to be wolfgang’s bride because i want to be klaus’s,” the guard smiles, and he must be klaus, the princess is rejecting a prince to run away with a commoner. “there’s a map and everything you need in the saddlebags. the wedding dress is waiting for you at the castle. no one will know you’re not me until wolfgang unveils you, and by then it will be too late. he will marry you, and i will be gone.”

“why are you doing this?” she asks.

gisella shrugs, “you’re my sister, and father is an idiot. i want you to be happy, and i want wolfgang to be happy, and i want to be happy too. this way we all get what we want. our brother will be waiting for you in wolfgang’s castle. he’ll help you.”

maleen is speechless. gisella grabs her in a quick hug – the only one they’ve ever shared – and then goes to the carriage with klaus trailing behind her. “i’ll see you again, princess maleen!”

she doesn’t have time for tears. she gets on the mare, and rides for the palace of the neighboring land.

~

she makes it just in time. she sneaks into the castle the night before the wedding, ducking around servants until she find her way to jan’s door. she knocks, tentative, wondering if this was a mistake and all one elaborate trap. but the door opens and his face slackens in relief, “finally!” he pulls her inside, and sits her down. there’s lukewarm water waiting for her so she can clean herself, and jan stands with his back to her the whole time, outlining the wedding and how it will go so she knows what to expect the next day. “father isn’t here,” he assures her, “he didn’t want to leave the kingdom, so i’m here in his stead.”

“won’t you miss your sister?” maleen finishes washing and wraps herself in a soft blanket.

“when i am king, gisella will return,” he says confidently, “she will come home and bring klaus, and you will rule here with wolfgang, and all will be well. our countries shall be great allies when it is me and wolfgang on the throne.”

he’s only a year older than gisella, just seventeen, and maleen feels oddly old next to them, feels old next to these children who know what they want and take it and don’t let anything stand in their way.

“we need to get your hair rebraided,” he says, “you should look perfect tomorrow. it’s your wedding day.”

she stares, aghast. “that will take all night!”

“i’ve brought help,” he says, and sends a servant down the hall. the servant returns with a half dozen of the maids who raised her, and who crowd forward and hug her and kiss her cheeks and say how much they’ve missed her. princess or not, bride or not, to them she will always be their little maid maleen.

~

it’s clear gisella picked her wedding dress with maleen in mind. it fits her for one thing, and is clinging and heavy, and it must have looked awful on gisella, but on her it’s perfect. her dress is accompanied by white silk gloves and a thick veil so that no one can see her, so that no one will know she’s not the daughter of the king they’re expecting to be there.

wolfgang is at the end of the aisle, looking like he’s going to an execution, and it takes more self control than maleen was anticipating not to go running to him. she turns to him, and he lifts her veil. he sees her and freezes, mouth sliding open. she winks at him, because they just need to keep it together until they’re married, he just has to keep his cool for a few minutes and they’ll have won it all. wolfgang closes his mouth and says nothing about how this is clearly not the bride he was supposed to marry. they turn so none of the guests can see them, and the priest gives maleen a confused look, but with a glare from wolfgang he continues on with the ceremony as if nothing is out of place.

“you may now kiss the bride,” the priest says, after what seems like an eternity.

wolfgang grabs her about the waist, dips her, and kisses her soundly on the mouth. her veil falls off and she can hear the horrified and shocked gasps of the guests, and under that jan’s laughter. when they break apart, foreheads still pressed together, she whispers, “hello, prince wolfgang.”

he kisses her again, quick and sweet, and does nothing at all to disguise the joy in his face. “hello, princess maleen.”

and they all lived happily ever after.

Ah, unrequited love.  When your best isn’t enough. (Participation medals of the heart.)

“I don’t know what to tell you.”

Hamilton could hear the hushed adult voices on the other side of the door, thin compressed wood with a dirty glass panel window not doing enough to keep the conversation confidential.

“The boy’s only thirteen,” the case worker went on, hidden behind the beige blinds on the inside of the window, “we’d prefer to keep him in the city of course, but–thirteen, fourteen, fifteen–that’s five years until he ages out, and it sounded like they weren’t sure if they could handle another.”

everyone wanders about Keith’s fam and his childhood right but yo,, I’m still so curios about his garrison days. we know next to nothing about any of the paladins garrison time but we know a weird amount of nothing about keith considering we don’t even know his name when we know that he flunked out because of “disciplinary issues”. we don’t even know what that means either, considering lance just defending pidge to Iverson was treading on “following in keith’s footsteps”. regardless of what counts as ‘disciplinary issues’ at the garrison, it would probably take a lot to get keith, their star pilot, kicked out. it probably took something big, or something continuous, to get “best pilot of the generation” kicked out. regardless of if the garrison is up to something shady or not (they totally are), the would not want to lose keith, if he really is their best pilot. but to me, that raises even more questions. not even Why he got kicked out, but why he joined the garrison in the first place. we know that pidge joined to find her brother and father, and even before that, we know she wanted to come with them, and was obviously interested in space exploration. we know that lance loves piloting and that he’s passionate about it, and we can speculate from his character that it’s something he probably thought about even as a little kid. we know hunk loves engineering, we know he’s smart and we know the garrison is a very elite school. even if he gets flight sickness/has anxiety he probably saw how good their program is and had to get in. it’s pretty easy to speculate from character, and what we’ve seen, as to why the trio all went to the garrison. we don’t know much about shiros time either but we know he’s a good leader, probably pretty passionate about piloting, and was damn good at it too. but we can’t really speculate from keith. we don’t know if keith met shiro at the garrison, so we don’t know if that’s why he decided to go. as someone with such a trend of lowkey disobeying general orders, it’s hard to see him wanting to go to such a strict, elite school. all along I’ve been assuming that keith didn’t like it there because he got kicked out, but we don’t even know Why he went. even tho keith is reckless and “the loner” and doesn’t listen to others very well… we know he works hard, he trains all the time to be better, he takes his job as defender of the universe so so seriously, even if he fights with mall clerks and risks his life to find out who he is, he’s still 100% to saving the universe at the end of the day even if he has to sacrifice things that are important to him for it. so considering how high he was probably thought of at the garrison and how serious of a fucking teenager he is, despite his reckless and impulsive disposition, I find it hard to see him getting kicked out. he probably took his time at the garrison super seriously too, he was top of his class. but still considering all that, I’m still stuck on the fact that the garrison is so strict, and it’s hard to see keith putting himself in that situation unless it was Important. so I’m left to wonder two things:

why he joined, and why he got kicked out.

and tbh? I think the answer is the same for both questions. we know keith wants so bad to know about his family, and probably always has. for someone with no family, he seems to care about it a lot, even if not in the way pidge or lance do. in my mind, keith kogane joined the garrison as a scared angry orphan boy because maybe it was just some place to go, or somewhere a foster system or a disciplinary organization put this bright yet impulsive boy. and he tried so so hard in his classes because he wanted to be something his parents would be proud of if he ever got to meet them. he wanted to be able to be someone his parents would regret ever leaving behind. a son they could love. and then he fell in love with flying. and he tried harder. but he still did impulsive things like pick petty fights. but still he tried harder. and then the only person who never ever gave up on him, the only person who never left him behind, never left him to wonder where they’d gone, what he’d done this time to make them leave, his brother, disappeared. and the garrison was shady, and they wouldn’t let their star pilot, their prodigy, know what happened. he probably got kicked out of the garrison the same way katie holt did - looking for his brother. because I think family matters to keith in a strange, abnormal way. it’s the only way it could matter to him because it’s the only way he had it. and I think there’s a lot more to that story that first meets the eye

May I just say that I LOVE Rick Riordan? Not for any other reason than the amazing characters he creates:
-Percy Jackson: a boy with ADHD and dyslexia. If you didn’t know, Uncle Rick originally created Percy like this for his son Haley who also has ADHD and dyslexia. But also, Percy comes from an abusive household. Smelly Gabe, even though he, from what I can gather, never hit Percy, nor did he hit Sally while Percy was around, but he was verbally, economically and emotionally abusive toward both Sally and Percy. And Percy overcame that.
-Annabeth Chase: a girl, also with ADHD and dyslexia, who came from a family who she thought hated her. So she ran away. And found a new family. She ended up losing that new family by the time she was twelve. She believes that she can rebuild the world, and make it better. And in a way, she does.
-Grover: a satyr that, when originally introduced to us, is disabled. Even though we find out he’s not, he still has flaws. He has made mistakes, and he feels inadequate. He overcomes this and becomes a member of the Council of Cloven Elders.
-Thalia Grace: a girl who comes from an alcoholic home. She lost her brother, and ran away. She ended up turning into a tree, but came back from that. She became the lieutenant to Artemis.
-Rachel Elizabeth Dare: a girl who comes from a rich home, but just doesn’t like it. She loves the earth despite her father’s company trying to destroy it. She can see through the Mist, and becomes the Oracle of Delphi.
-Jason Grace: a boy forced to grow up too soon. He was two when he was abandoned, then he made his way to being praetor at 15, maybe younger. He never knew his family, and always wanted to bring about change. He was looked on as a hero, but didn’t feel like it inside.
-Piper McLean: a girl raised by a movie star. She disliked being tied to that name, hated the idea of being beautiful. She made herself blend in, except when she stole. Or convinced them to let her have it. She overcomes her insecurities, and becomes beautiful, not through her mother, but through her own power.
-Leo Valdez: a Hispanic boy who grew up with a loving mother, and then accidentally caused her death. He grew up in the foster system, being funny to try and cover up the pain of his loss. He didn’t like looking back, but Camp made him. He grew into his power, and fell in love. Now, he’s mature, and a leader.
-Hazel Levesque: a girl who grew up when it was a sin to be black. New Orleans, in the forties. Her mother seemed to hate her, and she was an outcast. The one boy she loved she never saw. She died, then came back to life. She grew into her powers and made herself new. She started fresh, and now she has found love, and can shape the world however she sees fit.
-Frank Zhang: a Chinese Canadian who lost his mother to a war. He was clumsy, he didn’t fit in. He hated himself. He went to the old country, where he fought and became what he was originally meant to be: A warrior.
-Nico di Angelo: An OpEnLy GaY cHaRaCtEr like THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN A LOT IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS WITHOUT A LOT OF INFERENCE BUT NICO DI ANGELO IS GAY AND BY TRIALS OF APOLLO IS PROUD OF IT!!!!!!!
-Apollo: An OpEnLy BiSeXuAl ChArAcTeR which doesn’t often happen at all ever, but IT’S BEING RECOGNIZED AS AN ACTUAL SEXUALITY BECAUSE HE LIKES BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS AND IT’S JUST BEAUTIFUL
Also: The majority of these characters come from single parent homes.
But that’s just PJO, HoO, and ToA. Let’s talk about other series for a second:
Kane Chronicles:
-Carter and Sadie are MIXED RACE. It is canon. Their dad is African American and their mom is British white. Again, that’s not something that really happens a lot in literature, period.
-Carter traveled a lot, he had no permanent home. He was really lonely, and very close to his dad.
-But seriously, even in modern society just imagine how hard it is to be mixed race. You’re not one or the other, you’re both, which also means that you’re neither.
-Sadie grew up with her grandparents, being rebellious and just not wanting to be in England. She wanted to travel with dad, and when he died, it was hard on both of them.
And Magnus Chase:
-Magnus Chase: a boy who loved his mother, and grew up on the streets after she died. He was actually similar to Leo in his back story. He had a rich uncle, but he hated money, hated being confined. Then he died, and now he’s grown to accept himself.
-Samirah al Abbas: a Muslim girl shown in a POSITIVE LIGHT AND DO YOU REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS RIGHT NOW WITH ALL THE PEOPLE HATING MUSLIMS???? And in Hammer of Thor, she PRAYS!!!!!! Like do you realize how beautiful this is? She doesn’t believe in the gods as gods, but as creations of Allah. Like, she is one of my favorite characters.
-Blitzen: a guy of unknown sexuality who loves fashion. The best part about this is that Blitz is not openly straight, gay or otherwise. He is just a dwarf who loves fashion, and this proves that you don’t have to be gay to love fashion.
-Hearthstone: HE’S DEAF! Do you realize how many deaf kids will read this and realize how cool it is to be what they are??? A lot, is what I hope. It’s just so refreshing to see a disability like this shown in a positive light. Also, he comes from a home where he is made fun of for his disability. It is shown that he has it hard for being the way he is, which I also think is important. It is important to show that people can overcome people who think they’re stupid for not being like everyone else.
-Alex Fierro: a GeNdErFlUiD cHaRaCtEr LIKE THAT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE GENDERFLUID, yes s/he is binary, but it’s still FREAKING AWESOME OKAY LIKE THAT IS A THING THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN WRITTEN BEFORE OKAY
In conclusion, Uncle Rick has taken the time to write amazing, beautiful, powerful, unconventional characters that we love. And it’s important that these are good characters, protagonists, because then we love them, and see that unconventional is good.

Andreil In A HeartBeat AU
  • Andrew grew up watching hearts pop out all around him. Growing up in the foster care system means seeing many hearts pop out just to be broken days later. With so many young teens crammed into the same house, crushes were often formed but they were hardly returned. Even when they were, they were soon separated due to the system. Sometimes the hearts never healed. Sometimes they did, but they were always scarred. Andrew had never seen a whole heart remain unmarked and promised himself he would never allow his heart to see the light of day, but that was years ago. Now, Andrew hardly believed he even had a heart. The years passed and even though Andrew had never seen his own physical incarnation of his heart, he knew it was damaged beyond repair. Luckily it never threatened to make an appearance. That is, until trouble arrived during his second year at Palmetto State University.
  • “Neil Josten is nothing special” was the first thought Andrew had upon seeing him in the tiny locker rooms at the cruddy high school he attended. Of course, That didn’t stop his heart from violently beating inside his chest. It didn’t show the physical sign of the HeartBeats which usually preceded the arrival of the heart, but it was a close call. Andrew ignored it like he did most things, but it was far from the last time his heart would act up
  • He was convinced it was another side effect of the drugs. Why else would his heartbeat surge like that when Neil responded to him in German? Nonetheless the same rapid heartbeat returned with a vengeance. This eventually became a regular thing. Any time Neil looked at him a certain way, or asked for a truth, or even when he got too excited about Exy, his heartbeat accelerated against his will.
  • Andrew finally admitted it was more than just the drugs when his heart jumped out of his chest after he handed the key to his house in Columbia. It wasn’t the act itself, but the face Neil made when he took the key; it was one of surprise and adoration, like he’d never been given anything before. Andrew immediately hated the look but it didn’t stop those HeartBeats from appearing when he turned away from Neil.
  • These HeartBeats increased throughout the rest of the semester and Andrew was about ready to cut it out of his chest. Their increasing interactions and conversations were wearing on Andrew’s nerves, always worried that he’d be caught. He never was since the HeartBeats always seemed to be delayed; they didn’t kick in until after Neil was gone. It resulted in Andrew giving in to Neil’s requests just so he wouldn’t be caught when the HeartBeats kicked in.
  • It didn’t help that Neil didn’t seem to know about the Hearts. When he saw the two small Hearts clinging to Dan and Matt, he was fascinated and started asking all sorts of questions. Andrew found out later that because of Neil’s life on the run, he hardly saw them and his mother never bothered explaining them to him. He claimed it was because she was too busy focusing on their survival, but Andrew knew it was another way to keep Neil safe. If his Heart ever manifested, it would be considered nothing but a liability. Andrew knew that from experience.
  • Driving back home after being released from rehab was almost harder than the time he spent in that hellish hospital. He was hoping the medication was the only reason his HeartBeats had begun, but seeing Neil waiting for him in the lobby had his heart picking up speed the way it had been all school year. Andrew ignored it, and drove them all home in silence. Andrew knew the HeartBeats wouldn’t be delayed anymore and was going to have to be careful from now on. He hadn’t come this far to let his Heart show up now.
  • It wasn’t until later on the rooftop when Andrew knew it was helpless. He told Neil he hated him despite his heart said the opposite. He threw Neil’s keys to the ground in an attempt to distract Neil when the HeartBeats made a reappearance and somehow it worked. Neil watched the keys fall as Andrew’s Heart worked to burst out of his chest. Neil went to retrieve the keys and still somehow missed the rapidly aggressive HeartBeat evident in Andrew’s chest. When Neil looked up at him and took a drag from the cigarette Andrew had tossed down there moments before, the one thing Andrew never wanted to happen did. His Heart appeared in front of him. It was an ugly little thing, bruised and scarred and almost unrecognizable as a Heart, but the face was one of pure love and adoration, the exact opposite of how Andrew felt. The excited little thing was ready to run after the stupid boy that caused these feelings, but before it could, Andrew pinned it down with one of his knives.
  • He wasn’t ready for this thing to give him away to Neil and the rest of the foxes, so Andrew trapped it in a jar lying around in his room and hid it under his bed. Of course this wasn’t the end. Andrew would repeatedly find the little guy had rolled the jar out from under the bed after interactions with Neil. He pretended not to see the heart’s increasing size and how the marks on it slowly faded with time.
  • Much to Andrew’s displeasure, Andrew returned to his dorm after the trip to Columbia that had him admitting his feelings to Neil to find the heart flying freely around the room trying to find a way to escape. Andrew was tired and instead of trying to capture the thing, he let it fly around the room. It went to the door, trying to fit through the cracks of the door. It also tried and  failed to open the window. The little Heart had grown to almost twice its original size, but it was still too small to do much of anything. Andrew put it in a box, and opened the window himself, smoking until he couldn’t hear the Heart bouncing around the box anymore.
  • Andrew was annoyed. He told Neil he hated him, and he meant it, but here they were on the roof again, Neil’s heart obviously beating, blush evident and bewildered with the new sensation. Apparently Neil enjoyed being hated. Despite this, Neil still had to audacity to ask about the other ten percent. He couldn’t tell him that the other ten percent was trapped in a box under his bed, so he didn’t. When Neil told him he wanted to see him lose control, Andrew could practically feel his Heart bursting out of the box.
  • Andrew kissed Neil. After months of denying and fighting it, he finally kissed the stupid scared boy he’d been infatuated with. When he pulled back, it was to see his Heart had broken free and was heading straight for Neil. Andrew tried to pull it from Neil’s shoulder but to his surprise, Neil stopped him, “No, it’s okay. How long have you been hiding it?”
    • “Is this another truth?” Andrew asked in return.
    • Neil shrugged. “If you want it to be.”
    • “Since I told you at Eden’s Twilight,” Neil’s face was one of delight and Andrew wanted to punch the look off of his face. Or maybe he wanted to kiss it.
  • After that, Andrew’s heart stayed close to Neil, often chilling in his pockets or somewhere it wasn’t seen. How it knew not to be obvious, Andrew wasn’t sure but he was thankful. It only came out when Neil confronted him later when the dorm was empty. This time, it wasn’t alone and as Neil told him “yes,” Neil’s own Heart popped out, reaching for Andrew. This changed everything.
  • Neil’s heart was hard to hide, and Andrew wasn’t sure if he wanted to. The effort it would take to keep it hidden was more exhausting that Andrew had the patience for. So the rest of the foxes caught on rather quickly. They assumed it was one sided, but they’d soon find out that was hardly the case.
  • Andrew found Neil’s bag after the riot and found his own heart trapped inside next to the phone Andrew had given him. Andrew was angry, as well as scared for Neil, but more angry that he gave up his heart and phone so willingly. In the hours that past, Andrew could see the cracks forming in his small heart and didn’t bother to hide it. The foxes watched cautiously as the cracks spread farther down the Heart. Neil’s own heart remained by Andrew’s side but mourned over the loss of Andrew’s own Heart.
  • But then the FBI came and soon they were reunited. Andrew’s Heart reached Neil faster than he did and Andrew no longer cared who saw because Neil was here and he was okay. He was damaged and bruised and scarred, just like Andrew was. Both their hearts were ruined little things, but they were happy together and Andrew thought that maybe these Hearts weren’t as bad as he initially thought they were.

I want age reversal batfam that includes Bruce in the reversal I want a rowdy gang of kids and teens and young adults who stumble upon freshly orphaned Bruce Wayne who only has an aging butler to look after him. and I want them to, for better or for worse, collectively adopt him. Or, in which 25 year old Damian al Ghul, (heir to the Demon’s Head who tossed off his mantle and became a vigilante on behalf of the world upon seeing the world for himself, and has only a fortune, a huge house, and a meager attempt at a secret identity), doesn’t know how he became responsible for: 21 year old Tim Drake, the haggard orphan CEO of Drake Industries who found out about Damian and the LoA and wanted to do some good for the city so he insisted on helping, 20 year old Cassandra Cain, the quiet but terrifying renegade who escaped her family and proved herself a worthy adversary, foe, and friend, 17 year old Jason Todd, who broke into Damian’s house and Damian was so impressed he managed to get past security that he didn’t turn him in but instead took him in not unlike a stray cat, 13 year old Dick Grayson, orphan and narrowly escaped the foster care system 4 years ago; Damian caught him trying to run and decided to let him stay with him, outside of the law, as long as he let Damian give him an education and as long as Dick helps around the house a little. The gang meets little Bruce Wayne, reeling after his parents’ murder. It’s Dick that wants to adopt him first, thinking all too much about his own parents murder not long ago. It doesn’t take long for the rest to follow suit though– And Damian doesn’t protest. Soon they’ve added this tiny, angry, grieving eight year old boy (and his butler) to Damian’s home, and they couldn’t be happier.

Okay little shits I want to say some words about the Earp Sisters- particularly my darling Willa

I see a lot of you guys have been giving her quite a bit of flack- you know for hating Waverly and shooting Nicole and unleashing a writhing tentacle beast on Purgatory. Now these are all very bad things. But I’d like to take a moment to explore how we got here. And as a clinical child psychologist specializing in abuse and trauma- I have A LOT to say about these three. Because OH BOY do they run the spectrum of child abuse outcomes in the real world.

Now, I want to start by saying all three of the Earp sisters were born into an abusive household. But the three had some very different experiences of abuse/neglect, and environment is SO important on child development. Like genetics is some basic groundwork but really it’s environment that does most of the shaping. In this analysis, let’s start youngest:

Waverly Earp. Now Waverly is like an ideal outcome from abuse. Clearly this girl was born with a hell of a lot of resilience in her genes (that Earp? legacy). She can bounce back from a crisis. But, she kinda got it easiest of the three: she was only in the homestead until she was 6- after that she was raised by Gus and Uncle Curtis in what was no doubt a much healthier, stabler household. Now see age 6 is important- because personality is generally done developing just before puberty- about 10 years of age. This factoid of personality development will come up again later, but for Waverly, being removed from a toxic environment at a young age meant she actually had a chance to unlearn/recover from many of the more nasty potential effects of severe neglect (she was by far the most neglected I mean a demon was her best friend and NO ONE KNEW) as well as the sibling abuse inflicted by Willa (blackmail, sadism, power plays- not a good sign in a child).

Now does the abuse still affect her? Hell yeah! She still lived through it and it changed her permanently- you see it in how she needs love and attention (why else go for Champ as soon as Wynonna leaves town? She needed ANYBODY) even at her own expense. She downplays herself, but simultaneously wants to be important (the Heir- cause you know her dad only cared about the Heir). And you know what I think? She didn’t resist telling Wynonna about Nicole because she was scared what she would think. No. Wynonna of course doesn’t care. No she didn’t say anything because she didn’t want to even risk Nicole getting involved in the toxicity surrounding the Earp family. She wanted Nicole separate to keep her safe (remnant thought process from Willa using what Waverly loved to blackmail her). But still, even with all of this, she is not as severely affected as she would’ve been if she had stayed neglected and abused for say, 12 or 13 years. Waverly had intervention, and real world case studies of severe emotional neglect have shown that a child as old as 5-6 can bounce back remarkably well in the right care. I mean to where you wouldn’t know they had been through Hell- at least not immediately.

Wynonna Earp. Middle sibling, mix of neglect and abuse. She is the most moderate/common outcome from abusive childhoods- with healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms and personality traits meshed together. Like Waverly, resilient as hell, because she lived in that environment for 12 years, and unlike Waverly didn’t get a healthy stable home afterwards. No she got the foster care system and juvie and unhelpful counselors who essentially gaslighted her (unintentionally but it’s still gaslighting) which does no one any favors. So Wynonna had way more negative environment time, yet she still held on to her “good” side- she has a moral code she follows, she cares for those close to her, she’s able to have a healthy relationship with at least one person (Waverly). I’d almost say she’s shown the most resilience of the three. Now her childhood experience is interesting, because she’s in the middle of this spectrum. She didn’t receive the full force of Ward’s attention because she wasn’t the Heir, Willa was. So that’s less aggression abuse from him, instead she was more neglected by him. But her very close age with Willa put her close to that aggression abuse as she experienced it vicariously through Willa. She saw what he did to Willa by way of abuse and Waverly by neglect, and seeing that affected her. It made her so, so protective and parental. Of both Waverly and Willa. So while Ward may not have done much direct abuse to Wynonna, she still lived it. And it affected her to make her a caretaker.

It’s also a form of displacement on Wynonna’s part- to be a caretaker. The prospect of caring for herself is far too daunting but caring for another? More doable. Taking a caretaker role also helps her regain some sense of control, none of which she had when she had to witness Ward’s abuse and couldn’t help Willa or Waverly. Now some of you may be asking: “Didn’t she see Willa abuse Waverly? How could she still care for Willa?” Remember she had known Willa much longer than Waverly, and on top of that she knew WHY Willa was so callous and aggressive- she knew first hand why. So she explained it away because she loved Willa and saw she was broken and I’m willing to bet when she witnessed the sibling abuse, she stepped in. I have a feeling Willa did most of it under the radar. Hell I bet even Wynonna got some verbal or emotional abuse at times from Willa, but she went with it because it was less severe. And again she would explain it away. And in Willa’s absence, Wynonna idolized her even more, and she became a myth of herself. Her good qualities remembered over her bad ones. Waverly had a different experience seeing as she didn’t HAVE any good memories of Willa.

Now to the contentious point. Willa Earp. Now I’ve taken you through the personality development of Waverly and Wynonna. You see how they came to be. Now I’m going to show you how Willa came to be. As the Heir, Willa was THE focus of Ward’s attention. And this is where it begins. If she had been neglected she may have actually had a shot, ironically. Because Ward promoted aggression, antisocial behavior, and created a culture of fear. We’ve only seen glimpses but he was taking her out in the middle of night telling her how everyone would die and it’d be her fault. He was creating a paranoid soldier. Now this is awful for a child’s development, especially personality. Remember she lived under Ward’s thumb for 13 years- her personality had long since formed, and it formed to cope with constant fear and a desire to gain some semblance of control over her situation to stay safe. And to keep Wynonna safe. I do not doubt she loved Wynonna- but she loved her how she LEARNED to love another human. Ward had no problem hurting and scaring Willa in a horribly misguided attempt at raising her. She knew as a child that fathers are supposed to love their daughters. So Ward’s abuse must have been how you love (in the mind of young Willa), and you see her applying this with Wynonna. She was more than ready to kill Wynonna because she truly believed it was a kindness and a show of love.

Did Willa ever love Waverly? I do not think so. Because Waverly didn’t show up until Willa was already about 8 years old and completely bonded to Wynonna. And, I think she was too busy to learn to love her, which I’ll explain more later on. Even in a healthy family, it’s not uncommon for an older sibling to resent a younger one, but add in the way Willa has been treated and raised up until that point, and you get the extreme response of sibling abuse. Now you might ask “So why didn’t Wynonna do the same? Why did she get parental while Willa got aggressive?” and the answer is (for the first time in this whole spiel) likely genetics.

A quick lesson: everyone is born with a specific type of temperament, which in short is how a child naturally deals with their emotions. Do they sorta “go with the flow” of their emotions, are they a powder keg with strong, uncontrollable emotions, or some mix? Temperament forms the building blocks of all further personality development, and it is far far from destiny. But it’s a genetic predisposition to regulate your emotions in a certain way. And it is interconnected with that resilience I’ve mentioned previously.

Resilience, if you aren’t sure, is a child’s ability to cope with adversity. The greater the resilience, the more likely a child is to come away from adversity without major psychological harm. A highly resilient child, is more likely to have a “good” temperament (moderate level emotions, relatively easy to work with) whereas a child with low resilience is more likely to have an “at-risk” temperament (very strong emotions that are difficult to regulate). Wynonna, with her obviously high resilience, clearly had a “good” temperament growing up. Willa, most definitely was an “at-risk” temperament (her losing her cool at the slightest provocation with Whiskey Jim for example), and combined with the severe abuse and aggressive environment, that temperament blossomed into the rest of her personality.

A third vital ingredient in this is called cognitive load. What that refers to is basically how much mental effort/energy the brain spends performing a task or tasks. There is a finite amount of cognitive load the brain can handle, and so it must apportion its time as it sees fit. If there’s a lot of stimuli (external and internal) to deal with, the brain will prioritize, again, as it sees most fit, leaving out “unnecessary” information. EVERYTHING take some cognitive load, from thinking through a problem, to emotional regulation, to social relationships. And we all know you can only juggle so much.

Now let’s combine these three concepts together in Willa. Willa was born with an “at-risk” temperament, which means she has BIG emotions and cannot regulate them well. That takes a LOT of cognitive load to manage. She also has lower resilience to adversity, and some of resiliency’s power comes from a LARGE capacity for cognitive load. You are more resilient if you are better able to process and work through adversity instead of getting drowned in it. So low resiliency=low cognitive load capacity. This already low cognitive load capacity had to deal with emotional regulation of a veritable firecracker, so it’s mostly busy doing that. Add in her forced focus on Ward’s “training” (skills and cognitive tasks) and abuse, and her close bond to Wynonna (a social relationship to manage and someone to protect) and her poor brain is overloaded. It can’t handle any more responsibilities. So when Waverly comes along she sees another potential responsibility and says no. So instead Waverly becomes not only a nuisance to her (she’s got enough to focus on already), but an outlet for her frustration and pain. She has no control with Ward, but she can control Waverly like he does to her. She can feel big, and what kid doesn’t take comfort in feeling big?

Another major thing I want to point out with adult Willa is her obviously stunted emotional and social development, which is no surprise. I’m willing to bet growing up she really didn’t have any friends besides Wynonna, so all of her socialization happened in the Earp homestead (not a great place as has been clearly demonstrated). Willa shows an understanding of the world that is basically that of a preteen. It’s shown as a black and white understanding of other people when she tells Wynonna of the citizens of Purgatory “They hate us Wynonna, they’re evil they deserve that thing!”. It also plays into her lack of emotional regulation, because even a child with an “at-risk” temperament tends to improve some as they age because they learn ways to cope. Willa never did. Now not only did Ward contribute to this stunted development but so did being isolated by Bobo and Lou.

And finally it is here where I will address the Stockholm Syndrome briefly. Only briefly because while she clearly has it- believing Bobo loves her- it did not create Willa as she is. That happened long before Bobo. Bobo used what Ward had started, that’s probably part of what drew him to Willa. Bobo’s influence sure as hell didn’t help because all he did was reinforce everything she had learned up until that point. But Stockholm alone did not make Willa. It’s a much more complicated story and it is tragic and it is one that needs to be heard. She is a product of fear and pain and the need to survive, and while her history does not change the fact that as she is now she is a villain, she is a villain worth sympathy. Because the poor thing never really had a chance from day one. So I dare you to instead take a look at Willa not as the evil lesbian-shooter, but as a scared child trained to be a soldier who is solely responsible for everyone’s lives who cannot handle the pressure and needs to escape and doesn’t know any other way but destruction.

I’ve see a couple of folks suggesting that Keith’s dad might have had abandoned him when he was small due to their interaction in Keith’s dream.

But what if Keith’s dad didn’t leave him? What if Keith was the one who was forced to leave his father?

Remember, Keith is part galra. So maybe whatever glamour it is that hides his galra features didn’t always work so well on a fast growing child. Because earth kids can grow like weeds, and who knows what galra kids can grow like.  So whatever it is that keeps Keith looking 100% human might have had to work overtime in the beginning to keep up with all changes that human kiddos rapidly go through, while actively trying to block/suppress any galra changes that might be trying to happen.

So, what if, the glamour tended faded a bit in some spots when it was stretched too thin? Which would result in tiny little Keith suddenly having purple bruise-like splotches scattered across his skin. His dad, lets call him Kogane, would recognize them for what they are. Keith’s mothers genetics peeking through the spell despite her promising Kogone before she left to fight a war that this could never happen.

So he panics a bit, scared that the changes will continue and that his kid might get taken away if anyone found out what he truly is. He suggest that Keith be more careful about letting others see his weird bruises, bruises that don’t even hurt at all and disappear after a day or two. As having the splotches show up on his knees, shins, and elbows are fine for a rough and tumble kid like Keith, but the ones on his shoulders, his back, and his abdomen would be allot harder to explain.

Eventually though, someone sees them. Perhaps it was the poker night babysitter, or maybe the nice neighbor lady who looks after Keith for Kogane while he’s at work. Either way, someone assumes the worse in a way that doesn’t involve Keith being half alien, and calls social services.

Keith remembers the day a lady in a pant suit showed up at the neighbors house while his dad was at work. How she asked him a bunch of little questions until he warmed up to her, and then asked about his weird bruises and what his father knew about them. Keith didn’t know much himself and just told her what his dad told him, to keep the bigger ones out of sight until they go away.

Believing they heard enough, Keith was lead by the tearful neighbor into the lady’s car and was taken away into the foster system. He never saw his dad again after that.

It was also right around then that the glamour stabilized itself and the odd bruises stopped, leaving Keith very confused for years to come as to what they really were.

Despite what his file says, Keith doesn’t remember his father ever laying a hand on him and hate’s the way case workers try to talk about him to Keith. Like Keith was a victim in denial of what they believed had happened. As if being a poor single father with a slow southern drawl and no other family made it obvious that his dad was to one to cause those bruises.

Later, when Keith finally hits puberty, he finds those bruises blooming across his skin all over again. They result in him being taken out of one of the few good foster homes he’d been in, a concerned counselor asking him if he was being bullied, and a doctor prescribing him iron supplements.

They were gone again by the time he aged out of the system and enlisted into the Garrison.

Missy Hart grew up in Redwood City, Calif. — in gangs, on the street, in the foster care system and in institutions.

“Where I’m from,” the 26-year-old says, “you’re constantly in alert mode, like fight or flight.”

But at age 13, when she was incarcerated in juvenile hall for using marijuana, she found herself closing her eyes and letting her guard down in a room full of rival gang members.

Back then, she says, yoga was just another mandatory activity, run by a Bay Area program called The Art of Yoga Project. It offers what it calls “trauma-sensitive yoga” to incarcerated girls.

At first, 13-year-old Hart felt uncomfortable. But, gradually, she learned to use the poses and breathing to relax, and she loved it.

I just got put into the system. I'm going to a foster family tomorrow morning. I'm so scared. My case worker said it would be ok but it's not her life getting fucked up and I don't know what to do. What if they're worse than my parents

My dear, I’ve never been through the system so I may not have the most substantial advice, but create a good bond with your foster parents immediately. Be sure to introduce yourself in an endearing manner, make direct eye contact, and if that makes you anxious, look at the glabella, they won’t be able to tell that you aren’t making eye contact. Be polite and try to learn the house rules as quickly as possible in case the family is strict. Don’t reveal any incredibly personal information until you’ve forged a strong bond with them, and attempt to get along. My apologies that you’re being put through this through no fault of your own.

You never liked hospitals so you tried to stay far away from them as possible. If you did get sick you would suck it up for a few days until your illness passed. Though, as fate would have it, you ended up in the building you hated. You were taking a cab home when a car pulled out too quickly hitting your side of the cab. No major injuries but you needed surgery to repair a ligament in your leg that tore in the crash.

Your mom, however, didn’t have that kind of money or at least you though she didn’t. When she instantly had enough money, you grew curious. Your mom could never hold a job for long and the jobs she did find weren’t high paying. When you asked her, she just brushed you off telling you that this was a discussion for later. You knew too well that she wasn’t going to bring it up unless she had to.

So now, here you were sitting in your hospital room alone while your mom goes out and parties with of few of her friends. Ever since you could remember, your mom always put partying before you. She rather get drunk or high with a few of her stoner friends than ever care about your well being. You couldn’t just leave even if you wanted to. Though she was a pain in the ass, you had nowhere to go. You never met your dad and he was probably just as bad as her.

What dampened your mood, even more, was that fact that you had to keep off your leg which meant you were trapped with your mother. You sighed sadly flipping through tv channels wishing you didn’t get in that cab so you wouldn’t be in this situation. Zoning out a bit, you didn’t notice someone was knocking on your door until you saw someone pop their head it.

“Miss (Y/L/N)?” A woman said as you sat up if your hospital bed.

“Yes,” You answered quietly trying to figure out who this lady was.

“I’m Mrs. Reynolds and I work with social services. I wanted to talk to you privately, your mother has already been informed.” She said as your blood ran cold. They were going to take you away and put you in the foster care system - something you did not want to end up in. “Miss?”

“O-Oh that’s fine,” You began clearing your throat, “What do you need to talk about?”

“Your mother recently reached out to your father when you needed surgery and he would like to meet you. He’s a persistent man so he’s currently waiting outside of your room. I wanted to make sure you were ok with this before I send him in.”

You stared at the women blankly as you tried to wrap your head around what was happening. Your father after fourteen years wanted to meet you. You always wondered what he looked like but your mom never kept any pictures of him. She didn’t even tell you his name after asking her many times. But here you were about to meet the man you always thought about. Nodding quietly you prepare yourself for the worst as Mrs. Reynolds leaned out into the hall summoning him in.

You expected a nobody, someone who either had no idea you existed or just now realized he made a mistake. But your were dead wrong, instead walked in someone you immediately recognized. It was Tony Stark, Tony freaking Stark. Your mouth dropped in shock as you stared at the man claiming to be your father.

“So (Y/N) right?” He said sticking his hands in his pockets unsure what to do next.

“Wait is this a joke? How? I mean, I know how but it’s been-”

“I know fourteen years. To be honest I didn’t know you existed until your mother randomly called me asking me for money.”

“Oh,” You quietly said trying to process everything.

“How’s the leg? I heard it wasn’t serious but surgery is surgery.”

“It’s ok,” You answered unsure how to act around Tony.

Watching him sigh, he walked closer to bed trying to think what to say next. He seemed just unsure of you as you were of him. You didn’t know why he even bothered to come, he missed most of your life already and now after one phone call, he’s here. Still, you were grateful he actually was a good person than some druggy who couldn’t get his life together.

“Look I know this is awkward,” He sighed looking at your uncomfortable posture. “But I don’t want to leave this room and not see you again.”

“Me too.”

“Well then let’s start this off right,” He spoke excitedly extending his hand out to you. “I’m Tony and your name is?”

“(Y/N),” You replied with a small smile on your face.

And that was a start to a new beginning.

Three months later you were still visiting your father often but instead of taking a cab there, he made his driver Happy take you to him. After the cab incident, he made sure you didn’t have to ride with anyone else but Happy. Life was good for the most part, your mother was the same but you could tell she didn’t like you hanging around your dad.

He was pretty clear that she wouldn’t get a dime out of him unless it was for you. Once she heard that, she started taking her anger out on you. Your mom still had full custody and every night she would threaten to stop you from seeing your father. You had to beg her just to go see him even if it was an hour or two, just to get out of the house and away from her.

You wanted to tell your dad what your mom was like but you knew he didn’t want to fully adopt you. He was an Avenger and billionaire, he didn’t want some kid ruining his style. So you kept your mouth shut and enjoyed the time you had with him. That, of course, didn’t make this easier on you at all.

“W-Where are you going?!” Your mother slurred as her friends started to snort random drugs. “You know I don’t like you leaving when we have guests!” She was definitely high from whatever she was smoking. Your mom couldn’t function like an actual person when she was like this and that scared you.

“D-Dad’s,” You whispered as her face turned to rage. “I-I’m sorry I-I’ll go back to my room.” You ran quickly as your mother continued to scream from behind you. Slamming the door, you quickly locked it as she banged loudly against it.

Sending your father a text that you couldn’t make it because of homework, you slid down to the floor trying to calm your breathing. Eventually, the banging stopped but you were too afraid to move from your spot.

Tony sighed reading the text you just send as he ate a handful of blueberries. He had a bad feeling that something else was happening back at your place. He knew your mother and she wasn’t as stable as she thought she was. Though he couldn’t just take you away from her, she still had full custody. This was something that he was going change.

He called a lawyer down beforehand to try to get custody and today he was going to ask you if you were ok with him proceeding with it. Tony was going to try and ask your mother first before trying to take this to court. He was even ready to offer her some form of money just to get you away from her.

You never mentioned how horrible your mother was to him but he had a feeling when you kept showing up with a few bruises every now and then. So when you said you couldn’t make it, he knew something was definitely wrong. Without even thinking, he was out the door with his lawyer ready to finally get you away from that hellhole.

Even after three months, he never actually saw where you lived. Happy always picked you up a corner farther away from your house. Your apartment was definitely not what he expected it to look like when he pulled out front. Some windows were boarded over while some were just broken. The roof looked old along with the cracked brick covering the apartment complex. Walking into the building was whole other story.

The smell was awful and you could hear bricking a few doors down. The wallpaper was peeling and the ceiling was littered with water stains. Tony knew more than ever, that he needed to get you out of here. When he arrived at your door, he knocked only for the door to slightly open. Pushing the door open and walking into the apartment, he called out to your mom.

When he got no answer, Tony walked further into the room, only to find your mom and her friends passed out surrounded by empty beer bottles and drugs. Without even glancing at his lawyer, Tony watched as his friend pulled out his cell phone to contact the police. Now all was left to do was find you and get you out of here. Stepping over a few bottles, he made his way over to the hall where he heard a few sobs coming from behind a door. Realizing that was you, he tried to open it only to find that it was locked.

“Leave me alone,” You whimpered.

“(Y/N), it’s me. Open the door,” He said hoping nothing happened to you.

Tony heard shuffling behind the door before he heard the lock quickly turning. Then the door flew open as you jump straight into his arms. You started crying harder finally letting out all the emotions you bottled up. Wrapping his arms tightly around you, he made sure you felt safe.

“Shhh, I got you, I got you.”

Once your breathing calmed down, you wiped your tears away before hugging your dad once more. “M-My mom,” You hiccuped as tears started to form again.

“Don’t worry, I got her taken care of. Let’s go back to my place ok?” He said as you nodded following his lead.

Once the two of you were back at the tower you were still shaken up but you managed to calm yourself enough to explain what happened to your father. He knew you didn’t want to cause any trouble but you were clearly not in a good environment.

“You’re not going back there,” Tony said feeling the anger boil in him. “I won’t let you, that women will not be coming near you again.”

“But she still has full-”

“Not for long. I have my best lawyers working on it, she won’t come near you again. And after than stunt she pulled today she won’t have a case.”

“Really?” You asked as he nodded. You smiled widely as you jumped up from your spot and hugged him tightly. “Thank you, dad. I glad I tore a ligament that day.”

“Me too kid, me too.”

At the end of the day, you knew your father was there for you and would project you no matter what. After fourteen years with your mother, you finally felt safe and found a place where you could call home.

a must read!

All right guys! I know some of you have read either The Foxhole Court and/or The Raven Cycle. Some of you may or may not also have read Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe? Yeah? Right?

I’ve got something for you: Silent by Sara Alva

It’s a must read I accidentally stumbled upon yesterday. It’s this absolutely beautiful, yet heart wrenching and unique novel about a gay kid, Alex, that gets thrown into the foster care system where he meets this other guy, Sebastian, who’s mute. It’s about dark pasts, survival, love and coming out.

After I finished it I looked it up here on tumblr and could hardly find anything. NOTHING. And it actually broke my heart a little since it’s such a beautiful story and truly deserves more attention. SO READ IT. It’s not even 4 USD on smashwords. And it’s so so so worth it!

And after you’ve read it? TALK TO ME <3

”Alex’s life as a teenager in South Central LA is far from perfect, but it’s his life, and he knows how to live it. He knows what role to play and what things to keep to himself. He’s got it all under control, until one lousy pair of shoes kicks him out of his world and lands him in a foster care group home. Surrounded by strangers and trapped in a life where he could never belong, Alex turns to the only person lower on the social ladder than he is: a “special” mute boy. In Sebastian, Alex finds a safe place to store his secrets—those that sent him to foster care, and the deeper one that sets him apart from the other teenagers he knows. But Sebastian has secrets of his own, and when tragedy rips the two boys apart, Alex will stop at nothing to find the answers—even if it means dragging them both through a past full of wounds best left buried. It might just be worth it, for the slim chance at love.” [goodreads link

In Light of the Recent My Immortal ‘Author Reveal’,

as someone who’s been a fan of Rose Christo for a long time before now (yes, I was shook when she opened up about it)

go read her other books.

Especially the Gives Light series. It’s about a young gay mute boy who goes to live with his grandmother on the Nettlebrush and befriends (then falls in love with) the son of his mother’s murderer. Here are some quotes from the first book:

“Each person is just an imprint of the many people who have crossed paths with us over the years, some more than others. Most of us never think to say thank you. I know I never had.”

“He turned his head and gazed at me, eyes dancing and blue, remnants of a smile dancing on his face.”

“Nor had I realized until that moment how much of a group project it was to grow up. ”

It was my saving grace last year when I really needed motivation to keep reading, writing, and living. The writing style is ridiculously beautiful and touching, with heavy influences from Christo’s childhood growing up native and tossed around in the foster system (which will be touched upon in her upcoming memoir, Under the Same Stars.)

I really hope that this burst of publicity will help to shine a light on her work because man, does it deserve it.
