Paul Slippery’s three sons, L to R: Edwin Slippery (Joe Van Moyland), Rory Slippery (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Dan Slippery (Neil Henry).
ITV ARCHIVE
Meet General Practitioner Paul Slippery, fortysomething and under pressure. Beset by the tribulations of oncoming middle-age and the apparent dwindling of his sex life, Paul’s daily life becomes a series of emotional crises. Paul is disgusted when his fiftysomething friend begins an energetic but ultimately fatal affair with a thirtysomething; anxious when his wife Estelle returns to work for a boss who seems to express an unhealthy interest in the state of their marriage; and envious when his sons indulge in sexual relations under his own roof, with a number of girlfriends who just happen to be related.

Congratulations, Paul, you’ve actually succeeded in making Pilfrey look like the reasonable one here.  Which considering the context of the scene (i.e. Ronnie existing and being himself) must certainly rank amongst the world’s more *amazing* achievements.

You know, I’d forgotten Eggs Benedict Cucumberpatch was even in Fortysomething because that was back before everyone thought he was hot shit.

Likewise Nathan Barley.  Do people still think Bendy Wendy is hot shit?  I’m so bad at keeping up with the kids these days.

Tim Story To Direct ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ CBS Comedy Pilot

Tim Story, director of the Ride Along, Think Like A Man and Fantastic Four movie franchises, has come on board to direct and executive produce What Goes Around Comes Around, CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot from writer Dan Kopelman (Malcolm In The Middle) and producer Aaron Kaplan.

The project, from Warner Bros. TV and Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, centers on two fortysomething parents who were wild and reckless teenagers and now face their worst nightmare—raising three teenagers of their own. Kopelman wrote the script and is executive producing with Kaplan and Story.

This marks a reteaming for Story and Kaplan, who also are working together on the Nicki Minaj pilot at Freeform, which Story directed. In TV, Story also directed the pilots Standoff (Fox, drama) and Brothers In Atlanta (comedy, HBO), both of which were picked up to series.

Story, repped by UTA and Matt Johnson, is the highest-grossing African-American director, with seven movies opening at No.1 — Ride Along 2 (2016), Ride Along (2014), Think Like a Man Too (2014), Think Like a Man (2012), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Fantastic Four (2005) and Barbershop (2002).

CBS Orders ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ Comedy Pilot From Dan Kopelman

CBS has given a pilot order to What Goes Around Comes Around, a single-camera comedy from writer Dan Kopelman (Rules Of Engagement, Malcolm In The Middle) and producer Aaron Kaplan.

The project, from Warner Bros. TV and Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, centers on two fortysomething parents who were wild and reckless teenagers now face their worst nightmare—raising three teenagers of their own. Kopelman wrote the script and is executive producing with Kaplan.

This marks the first single-camera comedy order by CBS this season — the rest have been all multi-camera or hybrid — though I hear that the O’Shannon/Butler/Hope project, originally developed as single-camera and ordered to pilot as hybrid, may revert to a single-camera format.

What Goes Around Comes Around marked the third consecutive broadcast sale for Kopelman and Kaplan who had a multi-camera comedy project at CBS last year and a half-hour spec with John Hamburg attached to direct at Fox the year before. The two also developed a project together at Nickelodeon. This is the third network pilot order for Kapital Entertainment this season, joining single-camera comedy The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport at ABC and animated presentation Botcop at Fox.

FRIENDS WITH MONEY (2006)

4 out of 5

Although it doesn’t achieve the same heights as writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s other triumphs, “Friends with Money” is nevertheless a warm, funny and perceptive look at friendships among upper-middle-class fortysomethings forced to examine their lives and each other.
