This Black Queer Love Story Is Exactly What The Comic World Needs
You'll literally fall in love with this queer romance novella.

Black queer love between two women often goes underrepresented in any medium.

Writer Tee Franklin wants to help change this with her forthcoming comic “Bingo Love.” It follows the fictional story of Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray, beginning from the time they fall in love as teenagers in 1963.

Their parents find out and forbid them from seeing each other again. The women lead separate lives, marrying men whom neither of them love. Hazel and Mari reunite at a bingo hall and old feelings surface. They divorce their husbands and live out their truth as a married couple, a light in which audiences rarely see elderly black women. Their love story extends all the way to 2030.

The 80-page graphic novella is one of the first of its kind.

Franklin, who created #BlackComicsMonth in 2015 to promote diversity in the straight white male-dominated industry, said inclusive stories like “Bingo Love” are crucial. She said that sometimes white superheroes aren’t as exciting as representation in comics…

I’m glad her crowd-funding was successful so she can bring this to light.

Recently I came across this unpleasant surprise (on the right) and I need people to understand why I am so upset by this and why this is not okay. I am a freelance character designer. Meaning I make my living off creating characters and art. While I appreciate that my character designs have received so much love and attention that there has been an influx of 3D artists recreating my designs in 3D I am not okay with them being used commercially or for profit. This includes having them featured in books, magazines, prints, or contests none of these are okay without my consent. Whether or not I am creating a character for fun or commercially it is either I and or the client that has the final say on what will happen with the character and art at the end of the day. 

In this case the artist, Danny Mac, that created the 3D rendering of my Muse piece made a mistake when he agreed for Pixlogic to use his 3D rendering of my character. He and I are already talking in regards to this situation since he is stating this was a terrible error on his part and it will never happen again. While I respect Danny Mac as an artist and he is being very forthcoming and apologetic in regards to this situation I want it to be understood that if this was to ever happen again with anyone trying to use my characters in any way that I have not agreed to it will NOT be tolerated.  

Again, I am okay with 3D artist recreating my characters for fun or for their portfolio as long as they remember to provide credit and include a link to my original design. What is NOT okay is if they are featured in books, magazines, prints, or contests; recreated for commercial use; mass produced; or used for  profit without my consent.  

I work hard to create these characters and art pieces. I put a lot of time and effort into them and I will work just as hard to defend and protect my work. Please respect artist and the time and effort that goes into creating their art.

Like, arguably the most qualified people are Dax and Obrien, as they have the most years of experience, even then Jadzia was freshly joined and Obrien is a non-com, technically not even an officer. Sisko wasn’t even a ranking captain, Kira had no formal training whatsoever, and Bashir literally graduated like two weeks ago.

The 28th of June, 1998, was a blistering hot day in Splenadora, Texas. It was also the eighth birthday of Robbie Middleton. On this fateful afternoon, which should have been a day of celebration, Robbie was brutally attacked in the woods behind his house. He was was tied to a tree before being doused in gasoline and set alight. Robbie suffered third-degree burns to 99% of his small body. Miraculously, Robbie survived this ruthless attack and managed to run the short distance back to his home where he was immediately rushed to hospital. Over the forthcoming years, he endured 200+ operations. However, his organs were badly damaged by the fire and at the age of 21 in 2011, Robbie passed away from cancer that was caused by the horrific burn injuries. The cause of death was ruled as homicide.

Just 17 days before he passed away, Robbie revealed on videotape who had attacked him on his eighth birthday - Donald Collins. Donald was 13-years-old at the time of the attack. Robbie revealed that two weeks before the shocking attack, Donald raped him in the same woods where he would later set him on fire. The prosecution believes that Donald had burned Robbie to conceal his crime. In fact, when Donald was 16-years-old, he was charged with sexually assaulting another 8-year-old boy.

In 2015, a jury convicted Donald of murder and sentenced him to 40 years.

I’ve seen crowdfunded projects crash and burn, but for my money, one of the most entertaining failures was a Kickstarted tabletop roleplaying game a few years back. I won’t be naming any names, since the poor guy’s clearly having a hard enough time as it is, but there should be enough information in this post to hunt it down if you’re morbidly curious.

Anyway, the target was met and exceeded, and the projected due date came and went. Nobody was particularly surprised, since crowdfunded indie projects basically never make their projected deadlines. Months passed, apologies were issued, backers were repeatedly reassured that everything was on track - the usual song and dance.

A few more months passed. Updates were scant, and handful of people asked for refunds, receiving them after variable amounts of dicking around. Not necessarily a sign of catastrophe, but folks were getting antsy, and the backer updates had been silent for an unusually long time.

Then right out of the blue, this big, ranty post went up, in which the project owner set forth the following:

1. The fact that people backed his project proved that the backers had surplus income, and the fact that they chose to spend it on financing the production of luxury goods (i.e., tabletop RPGs) rather than immediately giving it to the poor proved that they’re all bourgeois scum.

2. More narrowly, the backers had wronged him in particular by backing his project. Since that money was theoretically contingent upon the delivery of finished goods, the act of backing his project represented a monstrously predatory act of economic coercion against him.

3. In redress for this wrong, he would be keeping all of the remaining money, and neither a finished game nor any further refunds would be forthcoming. Anybody who felt slighted by this decision should take it up with the other backers, since it was their fault for creating the situation in the first place.

So yeah.

THIRTEEN’s The Talk – Race in America Tackles the Issue of Young People of Color and Their Uneasy Encounters With Law Enforcement. It premieres Monday, February 20, 9 p.m. on PBS. In anticipation of that premiere Tumblr and THIRTEEN  have convened officers, advocates and policy experts to discuss the state of community policing in the United States. 

Dr. Bryant T. Marks is a National Trainer on Implicit Bias and Community Policing. He has trained over 1,000 police chiefs via a series of White House briefings, and several thousand patrol officers through small group workshops in police departments across the country. He is a professor of psychology at Morehouse College and also serves as a Senior Research Fellow with the Campaign for Black Male Achievement.

John Matthews is the Executive Director of the Community Safety Institute (CSI) and a former Chief of Police. John developed and implemented community policing for the Dallas Police Department in the 1990’s and has worked nationally on scores of COPS Office initiatives over the past twenty years developing over 100 community policing training programs. John also serves as the Director of Federal Partnerships for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and was a member of the White House 21st Century Policing team.

Bakari Kitwana is the executive director of Rap Sessions, which is currently touring the nation leading town hall discussions on the theme “Run Toward Fear: Millennial Activists and Social Justice in the Trump Era” He is the author of The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African-American Culture the forthcoming Hip-Hop Activism in the Obama Era.

Trevena Garel is a retired New York City Police Sergeant. During her 21-year career Trevena served as both an undercover and an investigator in the NYPD’s Chief of Patrol’s Investigation and Evaluation Section, investigating allegations of misconduct involving both uniformed and/or civilian members of the NYPD. Trevena has had “The Talk” with her three children and her two oldest grandchildren.

Chief Michael Koval began his career with the Madison Police Department in 1983. Before becoming the Chief in 2014 he was the Sergeant of Recruitment and Training for 17 years. He has a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law.

Talks Machina Highlights: Episode 94
  • Denise message: “MY WORDS ARE A SPELL I’M CASTING ON YOU ALL”
  • Everybody will be in next week’s ep for the continuation of Liam’s one-shot!
  • If Pike had been in the Nine Hells, Percy probably would’ve signed the contract secretly as opposed to up-front. She’s the only one who can actually evoke shame in them at this point.
  • Taliesin was planning the entire time to scry on Scanlan and has been trying to make an excuse to steal the Scrying Eye for weeks.
  • Pike’s moment with the earring, talking to Scanlan, was 100% improv.
  • Laura suspects Sam wouldn’t have been able to pull off Scanlan’s departure if Pike had been there. As it was, after the show went on break, Sam felt so bad that he ran over and gave a hug to everyone. If he’d made Pike cry, according to Laura: “he’d be UNFORGIVABLE.”
  • Taliesin semi-bullshitted the Grey Hunt stuff and Matt rolled with it. Taliesin gave him a ride to the airport the next day and they talked about how much they enjoyed how it worked out.
  • Laura points out that she’s the type of gamer who reloaded the game 20 times in ME3 to try to find a way to get a resolution that would be good for everyone when one didn’t exist, and she had that same sense of frustration when she got home after the game. She was really upset over the resolution of the Grey Hunt, but is feeling a bit better knowing it at least wasn’t failure.
  • Ashley and Travis both briefly thought the Grey Hunt was gonna be a weird proposal. Taliesin: “I feel like in our friends group the proposals have been getting more and more ridiculous. That would be the meta-continuation.”
  • Taliesin points out that Percy has a problem with abandonment and the whole thing with Scanlan is hitting his “really serious anger management issues.” Percy was hoping to get Vex’s vague permission/help over the Scanlan thing, and when it wasn’t forthcoming, he changed his plans to be less extreme. Percy’s also dealing with guilt over not feeling useful in the underwater fight, and is displacing that as anger over Scanlan not being there to mitigate that issue.
  • Pike’s got a lot of lingering resentment over Scanlan leaving.
  • Vex would’ve approached the Hunt differently if she’d known more about the creature ahead of time. Everyone decides that it probably killed a lot of small, cute woodland creatures when it threw the tree at Vex.
  • Percy’s most angry about Scanlan leaving the group and abandoning his responsibilities. Everyone else has to deal with the horrible shit going on, but he’s the one who gets to fall apart.
  • Ashley was disappointed not to be in the Hells—she was wondering if she might’ve had a permanent shift in her personality as a result of staying there. Ashley really struggled with playing Pike as a good character early in the home game.
  • Vex was at 10 HP at the end of the Hunt. Taliesin didn’t think there was a real chance of death there, because Matt’s great at building tests that are terribly difficult but not fatal, but was more worried that she was gonna fail. Laura: “God, I would’ve felt like a loser!”
  • Ashley and Laura have both kept themselves from watching the scene that was just Taliesin and Sam and Matt in the room.
  • The idea of leaving with Scanlan crossed Ashley’s mind when she watched the episode, but it’s tough to tell what would’ve happened if she’d been there, because so much of the show is in-the-moment.
  • Vex thinks of Whitestone as home, more than Greyskull.
  • Pike feels some guilt over Scanlan’s departure because of the pranking. “I never thought he would be mad at something like that, of all people.” Percy didn’t feel bad about it, because that’s not where Scanlan’s anger really came from. Pike still feels bad, knowing that.
  • Poor Brian has food poisoning and had to run off-set midway through the show. Ashley jumps in to take over. “Okay, Laura and Ashley. Uh. Me.”
  • Taliesin says Percy and Cassandra don’t really talk about personal things—she probably doesn’t know about Vex, although she suspects. They love each other and all, but they’re not a very warm family. “It’s cold and we live in a castle, for god’s sake.” Laura sums it up: “Cassandra is no Vax.” Percy and Cassandra weren’t super close as kids. “She was a brat.”
  • Brian judges Ashley for not coming up with a funnier excuse for his running off-screen.
  • Vex and Vax have been growing into their own people over the past few months, but Laura doesn’t know how Vex will deal with being in Whitestone without having Vax around, without the comfort of knowing the person she loves most is nearby.
  • Percy has come up with contingency plans for if the other party members go rogue. Brian: “Tell me about it.” Taliesin: “No. They’re in the room.”
  • Vex has an affinity for nature, and while she’s growing accustomed to Whitestone, she’s more comfortable not being around people, because it lets her keep from putting on an act.
  • Before Pike died, her hair was black (with a purple streak), and after she died, her hair turned white.
  • Ashley gets asked about Pike’s parents and grandparents, and there is a story there, but she refuses to answer in case it comes up in the game.
  • Someone asks about Percy breaking his "honesty streak.” Taliesin: “It’s not an honesty streak, it’s just a period of not being caught lying.” Laura: “People think [Percy]’s much better than he is.” 
  • Blurbs on the back of Tary’s book. Percy: “A fascinating addition to the Audubon chronicles of Emon.” Vex: “Don’t believe the lies.” Pike: “I enjoyed the artwork in particular. Great read, but the artwork is fantastic. By the late and great artist, Doty(e), someone whom we used to know.”

Talks Machine in the Dark:

  • If Pike had a companion along the lines of Trinket, it would be a baby snow owl.
  • Taliesin wants fanart of Strawberry Shortcake-esque little animal pets for all of them.
  • Taliesin hasn’t thought about what Grog’s title would entail. “Now that you’ve said it, I’m having thoughts, and they’re all ridiculous and a little mean.”
  • Favorite spells outside their class: all agree that Chromatic Spray is cool. Taliesin misses using Prestidigitation. Brian: “I don’t have that spell because I can’t pronounce it.”
  • Percy smells like sandalwood and gunpowder.
  • After a long debate over which character would win in a Survivor AU, they eventually decide everyone would survive and they’d all do just fine together.
  • Ashley and Laura have matching compass tattoos, along with two more of their friends—they each have a direction.
  • High-school superlatives. Pike: “Best legs.” Percy would have a series along the lines of “President of chess club, president of yearbook club. Most likely to help make the yearbook.” 
Women Empowering Women: The Opportunity The CW Missed

Somebody pointed out the parallels between Lena Luthor and Mon-El’s stories. Both come from backgrounds where they’re inherently at odds against Kara. Mon-El because he’s from Daxam, and Lena because she’s a Luthor. Both come from backgrounds where their morals are warped and distorted because of the environment they were brought up in. Mon-El and his views towards women and Lena with her morally ambiguous views on aliens. Both are someone that, logically, Kara shouldn’t get along with.

The Luthor name is renowned in pop culture as something that is so intrinsically the opposite of the House of El. This didn’t even have to be established in the show because it’s just that ingrained in the audience already. Hell, you don’t even need to have read a comic book to know what a Luthor and a Super means. Mon-El’s storyline almost exactly parallels Lena’s but because his character isn’t as well known as a Luthor they had to spend several episodes explaining that. Which in part infuriated me because we already had a character set up with the same type of flaws that didn’t even need establishing. There’s so much rich history that could be explored between Kara and Lena and what it means to be two powerful women who want to break free from the shadows of their male relatives. But unfortunately this was side swiped to bring in a white male character that brings the exact same struggles to the table, but takes triple the effort to explain because no one outside of the die hard fans has a fucking clue who he is.

I digress. This got me thinking. The storyline they are trying to apply to Mon-El with Kara just makes so much more sense with Lena. It’s the classic trope of the protagonist teaching the secondary how to be a better person. So when you think about it, not only does it make more sense to apply this to Lena, applying it to Lena opens so many new avenues of social issues to discuss.

When Mon-El arrives on Earth, Kara has to get around her own prejudices about daxamites. This is mirrored, but not developed enough, with Lena. You bet my bottom dollar that Kara had some prejudices about Lena because of Kal-El, and while she overcomes them, it’s done offscreen for the most part. It goes without saying that Lena too held some prejudice against Supergirl because she’s an alien. Society consistently oversees a feud between women of different groups because the patriarchy thrives on that. If Supergirl had focused on this storyline they could have done so much to dispel this stereotype. Female characters are constantly at odds with one another, engaged in some form of competition, so it would have been incredible too see these two powerful women putting their prejudices aside to build up a rapport. Women supporting women y'know. That’s such an important message to send to all of the young girls watching.

Instead of Kara training Mon-El and teaching him how to control his powers we could have had Kara teaching Lena how to use her economic power and political influence for good. We could have seen Kara guide Lena on how to help the alien community by throwing galas in support of charities/political campaigns that work with aliens or by helping her develop technology that could help integrate aliens with humans. The potential in this plot line for exploring social issues that are currently so prominent in the western world is mind boggling. With the recent US election, Brexit, and the forthcoming French, Dutch and German elections it’s been highlighted time and time again how individuals in positions like Lena Luthor can influence the outcome for society and shape the social and political environment we live in. Supergirl had the perfect opportunity to lay out the situation and explore what that means in such a easy and accessible way. Yet they chose to teach the straight white boy how to fight instead, ultimately falling into the sexist trope that it’s a woman’s job to make a man better.

Instead of Kara teaching Mon-El about Earth customs and morals, we could have seen Kara and Lena navigating the morally grey values she holds as a result of her upbringing. Lena is an inherently good person. She’s proved that time and time again, even sacrificing her own mother for the sake of others. And while her intentions are good, there’s no way she could have come out of a childhood with the Luthors without being indoctrinated and corrupted at least a little bit. Her morally grey views on aliens would need to be unlearned and this is the perfect place for Kara to step in. Instead of Kara teaching Mon-El about earth, a planet not even Kara truly understands, Kara could educate Lena on aliens in order to help her unlearn her internalised bigotry. Kara could tell Lena all about the planets she used to visit with Zor-El and Alura and Astra and all the different cultures she’s seen. She could teach Lena about Krypton and its language and it’s traditions and holidays. And you know what? Lena will fuck up sometimes. It’s hard to unlearn the hatred that’s been drilled into you since you were a kid. The alien detection device would have been an amazing plot point to explore how much Lena has learned and how much she’s willing to change. Kara could have explained to her in more detail than she did in canon why it’s such a bad idea and all the problems it will cause. And because Lena knows now about all these different aliens and their planets and their cultures, she’ll understand what it means to out that in jeopardy with her device. She’ll struggle and slip up but her heart is in the right place and Kara can guide her there. And it’s not just Lena who would get something out of that. Kara has been bottling up so much since krypton died. The weight of her whole world. Her whole people. Her culture. Her language. She’s never been able to properly share that with someone. But teaching Lena to unlearn her hatred involves telling Lena about Krypton. And for Kara that’s so cathartic and a great form of therapy almost. She finally gets to share her world with someone who wants to understand. Who knows to a certain degree what it’s like. Kara needs this in season 2 but she hasn’t been given it. Mon-El doesn’t need to be taught about Krypton so with this Mon-El storyline the brunt of the trauma remains with Kara. But if it were Lena who she was guiding, well then Kara could have found her release. Which is something she’s been struggling with in season 2.

The latter of the two points has so much potential to delve into the issues of unlearning racism and how to deal with internalised racism. As well exploring the concept of cultural integration, cultural mixing and and cultural appropriation. On Kara’s side there’s a lot for young people watching to take away on dealing with trauma and coping with PTSD. There’s so many things that could be explored between the two characters if it were Kara guiding Lena.

Kara and Lena are two powerful female characters with complex and intertwined histories that propose many obstacles in character development. We could have had a story line in which Kara teaches Lena how to be a better person, and in the process of guiding Lena out of her morally grey values, Lena teaches Kara how to be a better person too. Instead of a bitch fight we have two strong women empowering one another and encouraging each other to be better. We could have had women supporting women. AKA what Supergirl was meant to be about in the first place. Lena and Kara play off of each other’s strengths so well, and they can use those strengths to work on each other’s flaws and weaknesses. We could have had that. Instead we’ve had Kara’s character development cast aside so she can prop up a generic straight white boy who ultimately becomes her love interest because heteronormativity and sexism are the CW’s best friends.

TL;DR: If Kara is meant to be making anyone a better person this season, then it should have been Lena Luthor because that way we could have seen the two women grow as characters and seen their dynamic shift into something that so desperately needs to be represented in the media.

Netflix swoops on world rights to Martin Freeman zombie movie

EXCLUSIVE: Streaming platform in multi-million dollar deal for Cargo from The Babadook producers.

Netflix has taken world rights to Martin Freeman zombie movie Cargo, in what is understood to be a multi-million dollar deal.

The film, from the producers of The Babadook, will be the first Australian film to sit under Netflix’s Originals banner.

The SVoD giant, which declined to comment on the acquisition, swooped on the film after seeing a three-minute promo.

CAA, UTA and Bankside Films represented the filmmakers in the deal with Ian Bricke negotiating on behalf of Netflix.

Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling’s debut, based on their short film which garnered 12 millions views online, charts the story of a father, played by The Hobbit and Sherlock star Freeman, who is stranded in rural Australia with only 48 hours to find a new home for his baby daughter, after being infected in the wake of a violent pandemic.

Freeman, who will be seen in the forthcoming Marvel film, The Black Panther, stars alongside Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, David Gulpilil and newcomer Simone Landers who completes the cast.

Screenplay was also written by Ramke.

Currently in post-production, the film is produced by The Babadook producers Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings of Australia’s Causeway Films, together with Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder of Addictive Pictures and Mark Patterson.

Executive producers include Ian Kirk, Jeff Harrison, Fergus Grady, Craig Deeker, Ian Dawson, Phil Hunt and Compton Ross.

Umbrella Entertainment will handle rights outside of the Netflix SVoD window in Australia.

The film is financed by Screen Australia in association with South Australian Film Corporation, Screen NSW and Head Gear Films/Metrol Technology with Bankside Films handling international sales.

Filmmakers Ramke and Howling commented: “I think the great hope of all filmmakers is that their film will find an audience. More than that, the right audience. Netflix’s distribution model is both global in scale whilst also being incredibly innovative and viewer-specific. It’s quite an honour to be launching our first feature under this highly respected banner, and to be the first Australian Netflix Original feature.”

Bea Gaddy knew what it was like to be down on her luck. Coming from a family of domestic violence, Bea went between low-paying jobs to homelessness and living on welfare. Her luck took a turn for the better in 1981 when she purchased a 50-cent lottery ticket and won $290. Instead of spending this on herself, she decided she would feed the hungry on Thanksgiving. This would become known as the “Thanks for Giving” feast and year after year, people were touched by Bea’s kindness and would follow in her footsteps.

The “Thanks for Giving” feast was first held on a sidewalk with Bea providing and cooking all of the food. With the popularity growing, more and more diners wanted to attend and local grocers and farms started to provide food. Over the forthcoming years, Bea was awarded with a number of awards including Unsung Hero Award, Afro American Woman of the Year and Baltimore City Council Award. She passed away on 3 October, 2001, due to breast cancer.

White woman at the center of Emmett Till’s murder admits she lied

  • For decades, the story of Emmett Till’s 1955 lynching went something like this: 
    • Till, then 14, was visiting relatives in Mississippi from his hometown of Chicago when he whistled at a white woman in a local store. 
    • News of the transgression quickly spread, and days later he was found brutally beaten, shot and drowned. 
    • One of his eyes had been gouged out, and his face had swelled beyond recognition.
  • Now, Vanity Fair details how author and professor Timothy B. Tyson wound up correcting a crucial detail of that story in his forthcoming book, The Blood of Emmett Till.
  • As Tyson reveals, Carolyn Bryant, the white woman at whom Till had allegedly whistled, lied in parts of her testimony.
  • She said on the stand that what Till had said to her was “unprintable” but that he had bragged about being “with white women before.” To top it off, she told the judge, “I was just scared to death.”
  • Except that she wasn’t. Because it never happened. And she confessed as much a decade ago. Read more

Once you had retreated to the bathroom, Steve heaved a large sigh, sinking into the cushions of the leather couch, covering his face with his hand and squeezing his eyes shut tight. How the hell did this happen? He had thought things were going well. He thought you and Bucky were finally on the same page. At least that’s how it seemed. You seemed so happy in the previous weeks, and now, it was like you were right back at the beginning.

Steve knew that he said he would call Bucky, but he didn’t know if he would even be able to contain his anger. There was a huge part of him that wanted to fly to wherever Bucky was and beat the living shit out of him. Steve didn’t like bullies, even if they happened to also be his friends. He wouldn’t tolerate this. He wouldn’t let Bucky just abandon you. He couldn’t. And if he couldn’t knock some sense into Bucky, well, then he would figure out where to go from there.
