The Arkansas Sleep Experiments

by reddit user nazisharks

To Those Who Sleep

This happened a few years ago. You may have heard rumors if you’re on campus. Some even circulated online. Nobody knew what really happened. Because I’m the only one who knows and I kept quiet. For a multitude of reasons. None of them matter now. Here’s what really happened.

The four of us were handpicked for this experiment by Prof. Richardson because we’d all studied under him, worked under him, and, as much as anyone can, earned his confidence.

He said this one was different. We had to keep it quiet. He wanted to keep details to a minimum. All he would tell us before going in was that he required a month of our lives and that if he succeeded sleep would never again be a necessity.

Hogwarts Headcannons
  • Give me Dean, muggleborn that he is, imitating Steve Irwin in Care of Magical Creatures class, much to everyone's confusion except for Harry and Hermione who are. On the ground. Unable to breathe. And refusing to explain why.
  • Give me Harry, demisexual that he is, realizing that the reason he can't stop obsessing over Draco is because Draco is the one who saw - and subsequently disliked - 'Harry', and not The Boy Who Lived. Realizing that Draco was the only one to first talk to him for HIM, in that robe shop, and not his parents or fame (because even Ron and Hermione did that at first). And thus, leading to him randomly starting crying in the middle of lunch and claiming he's doomed, much to everyone's fear.
  • Give me Seamus, pyro that he is, super happy one Christmas when Hermione buys him a book on fire caution, flammable materials, and elements such as magnesium. Thus afterward, the mysterious fires that have always happened are far more safe and controlled.
  • Give me Luna, wonderful airhead that she is, being stared at as, calm as anything, she waltzes right into the Slytherin common room and starts talking to the mermaids like its absolutely normal. A first year drops a book he's staring so hard, because HOW DID SHE KNOW THE PASSWORD. Draco just sighs, gets up, goes over to her, and offers her tea.
  • Give me Draco. Who looks on as Neville offers Harry rhubarb pie that he made himself, as Harry stares forlornly at his Treacle Tart, and makes and annoyed sound. "Dammit Longbottom he hates bittersweets." The Slytherins stare and Pansy just mutters "How do you even know these things. Merlin, help him realize."
  • Give me Parvati, who is being constantly mistaken for her sister by Ron, who panics and screams "IM A LESBIAN" when it gets to be too much.
  • Give me Ron, who stares wide-eyes from a distance whenever he sees Padma from that moment on for a full week, until Padma flips out too and hexes him. Parvati awkwardly wonders why Ron starts getting scared whenever she tries to approach from then on, since she knows Ron doesn't have problems due to that sort of thing from how he handles Harry.
  • Give me the thirty or so of the school's Muggle-raised, who made the mistake of showing their folks howlers, and react accordingly whenever one of the families sends one that is just a recording of Rick Astley, or High School Musical, or spoilers for Doctor Who. And the Wizard-raised just... staring... in fear... watching their savior and multiple other students as they run around screaming and crying in an absolute panic for some reason even though it was a different student that got the weird howler.
  • Give me Harry, whose hair surprises people by being dark red like his mother's when in direct sunlight. And usually at the Weasley den they're inside, but one day Harry joins them outside for a picnic, and Molly is so confused about where Harry went to then has do do a mental tally of her children.
  • Give me George, who in the midst of the final battle, hit Lucius with an Anaticula curse, so that every spell he tries makes a duck instead. And the Death Eaters are just so confused. "Lucius... is that a duck?"
  • Give me the Gryffindor common room. The new first years suggest Monopoly for game night. The entire room goes dead silent. One first year tries to ask what they did wrong. "Never mention that game again," is the only response they get. "But why-" "NEVER TALK ABOUT SIXTH YEAR. WE NEVER TALK ABOUT SIXTH YEAR." Their brave upperclassman Neville yells, trembling. Hermione starts crying. Harry goes into a panic attack. Ron whispers, "There are many reasons we don't talk about sixth year. If The Incident had been the only thing that happened, we would only not talk about The Incident. Many things happened that year. Thus, we do not speak of that year, or of that game."
  • Give me McGonagall, who struggles to control the cat population, because while students are told to have their cats fixed you know not all 100 students that brought cats did so. Her curling up around a litter that lost their mother to illness. Training them to stalk the corridors. Albus had his ways of getting information, and hers is the spy network of cats.
  • Give me muggleborns singing everything from Phantom of the Opera to Katy Perry in the corridors. Singing We Will Rock You to a pureblood who disses them for it. The purebloods thinking the weird songs and their tunes are some kind of Rite of Passage and fleeing whenever a muggleborn student starts singing. Altering song lyrics. "I throw my ferret in the air some-times, singin EEEEEEEYO, this is DRAAAAAACO!"
  • Give me muggleborns that are really confused about the whole quill instead of pens things, throwing transfigured pokeballs in Care of Magical Creatures, the band students bringing kazoos and harmonicas and the wizrd-raised students that are just so confused as to how those things even work, because it must be some sort of air magic, right??
  • Give me muggleborns making entire conversations out of pop culture references specifically to confuse some Slytherin who just called one girl a Mudblood. "These are not the droids you were looking for." "I'm right on top of that now Rose, I promise." -jazz hands-
  • Give me muggleborns with Patronus that are things like Pikachu, velociraptors, the quiet Canadian transfer student with a moose patronus the size of a SMALL HOUSE, the one whose is a angeled-out Castiel, the one whose patronus is the democrat donkey and another the republican elephant and the two, previously best friends, become mortal enemies rivaling the fame of Harry and Draco.
  • Give me muggleborns hugging each other before break, promising to 'call' each other, trading weird codes, how they can't wait to go for 'sushi' or planning that trip together to 'disneyland' where they can go flying?? But no one's allowed magic?? Or flying?? And the wizard-raised think that somehow, shockingly,<i> these children totally new to our world have developed a way to cheat the system?? Muggleborns are badasses!!</i>
  • Give me muggleborns who are fully aware that the anti-tech wards were made when, like, radios barely even existed, much less cellphone towers and microprocessors, so while they can't turn them on inside the stone school walls there's this group that Harry joins constantly that just sit there in silence staring at these tiny things and sometimes randomly laughing hysterically, and every now and then standing and just running all the way across to the other side of the lake all at the same time with no signal whatsoever. The purebloods are <i>terrified</i> of this frequent happening.
  • Give me Harry, Hermione, Dean, and Justin from the D.A, muggleborns they are, doing a movie night every week to help the D.A. relax and bond. They re-start this after the battles, during eighth year, with several other people such as the returned Slytherins joining in. The entire year they play things like Tangled, The Breakfast Club, Brave, Lion King. But then the last four weeks, they announce they don't want to mislead everyone that everything is all fun and rainbows. The last four movies are My Sister's Keeper, The Shining, Marley and Me, and for the last week, a marathon of the entire Jurassic Park series.
  • Give me Hufflepuffs, who secretly are very relieved to be the 'normal' House. Jocks over there, know-it-alls over there, goth wannabees over there, now lets go camp out by the kitchens we're gonna need it to survive the next seven years like this.
  • Give me Ravenclaws who are so done with the riddles when they stumble back at midnight after having fallen asleep in the Library. "What's the truth?" "THE TRUTH IS THAT I WILL SET YOU ON FIRE IF YOU DON'T LET ME IN."
  • Give me the Trio, who use the Marauder's Map to find the most absolutely ridiculous routes to class, knowing every single one of the shortcuts. It's not odd for them to simply appear out of the ceiling. One day the new first years try to follow them, to learn the school better, but it doesn't go so well because then they try to go through a disappearing wall the Trio just did they instead run headfirst into it, and the next time they do behind a tapestry, down a waterside, around some sort of tower, causally past an entire doorless room full of bats, and somehow come out on the complete other side of the castle.
  • Give me Draco whose just completely had it with Harry's staring and confronts him, like they always do, and Harry just blurts out that he likes Draco's new haircut and can he touch his hair, and Draco so shocked he lets him. "Potter stop treating me like a cat I'm evil remember? Bloody hell have you gone daft?!" "But... it's soft..." "I hate you." But he just can't find any anger over this, so there's like no venom whatsoever in it and Harry can't stop giggling.
  • Give me Ginny, who can't stop giggling as Luna confuses the fuck out of an entire crowd with her way of speaking, and who during seventh year could 100% get away with insulting the Death Eaters because of the way she said things. Who after Luna used said tactic to get her out of a Crucio punishment just clung to Luna, shaking, and realizing that she loves Luna so much for this very reason. That there will never be another person like Luna in her life, ever.
  • Give me Harry, who was not really well educated while living at the Dursleys, who couldn't read very well but was wonderful at sneaking around, little tricks like hiding things, and loved music. He taught himself magic tricks, and MERLIN ALMIGHTY THIS 11 YEAR OLD KID HAS MASTERED VANISHING SPELLS, WHAT, HOW, and Percy, uptight prefect he is, just looses it.
  • Give me Ron walking in on Harry talking to some random snake in their dorm room, laughing like the snake said a particularly good joke, tipping his head and smiling as he responds, the python slowly curling up his arm to rest over his shoulder. Ron freezes, stares, and then slowly backs away, closes the door and stands there staring at it for a full half hour in absolute horror.
  • Give me the rest of the D.A. walking into the Room of Requirement and hearing screaming, Dean shrieking that he's going to murder someone, Hermione crying, Justin cursing like a sailor yelling for everyone to stop, and the rest panic and run around the corner and there the four Muggle-raised students are. With some sort of odd device in their hands. Playing Mario Kart.
  • discourse: DID YOU KNOW that Kingsman is a racist, sexist, gratuitously violent, and not very diverse film??
  • me: ...Yes.
  • discourse: SO ARE YOU GOING TO STOP LIKING IT??
  • me: No...
  • discourse: WHY, YOU IRREDEEMABLE PIECE OF SHIT??
  • me: Because I can critique something I like and also enjoy the elements that make this film entertaining. I also love how both meta and fic discuss or simply correct the problematic things in canon, though they do also explore said problematic aspects in interesting, complex ways. For the most part, we tend to have a firm grip of what needs to be better represented in not only the movie, but in the general scope of fiction and real life social attitudes and political/economical implications as well.
  • discourse: ...are you going to stop liking it, though
Dark Headcannon

The Immortal Fakes buying a farm and setting it up for a real life Dead by Daylight scenario. Spending time and money to wire up generators that once their required number is met will allow the doors to open, sometimes for those they only want to scare it only takes one, for those they want to punish it could take up to ten. Fog machines and flares set into the ground, the sharp smell of blood and decay from the slaughter house Ryan sets up in the middle with fresh pigs and occasionally a hung corpse.

Gavin setting up an army of camera’s, night vision, motion sensors, speakers -you name it he has it - so they can observe the fun when someone is let loose with the hostages. Sometimes he plays music other times the watches strapped to their wrists will vibrate when the hunter is near.

The watches function as instructions for the hostages, it tell them if someone is hooked, how many generators they need, if they’ve opened a door and If the trapdoor is activated.

The trap door is special.

In more ways than one. It is one of only two ways to be spared and there is always one of two people waiting for you at the bottom. Geoff with a sharp smile, a drink in hand he’ll greet you by name and ask “what have we learned?” If you fail to answer he’ll get in close and whisper right in your ear “never cross me again.” Then you wake up at home, wounds treated but forever living in fear of that place, of the Fakes. Sometimes it’s Jack - if Geoff has had his turn on the hunt, she won’t speak but she’ll have a medkit and a look of disappointment. When you wake up to your horror you are back on the farm, this time you have a medkit or a flashlight or maybe lunch and three other confused horrified people beside you because the trapdoor is a trap and you fell for it.

Sometimes when they’re feeling particularly cruel they’ll send Gavin or Ryan in as a “hostage” make it look like they’ve been there for days. Get them to amp up the fear and die horribly in somebody’s arms, only to be waiting on the other side of an exit with a wicked smile and a gun. Because even if you make it out the exits the only way you get to live is if you played well - if you went back for an innocent or a crew mate. Those that hide and survive until the end don’t get to walk out alive.

Imagine Ryan and Jeremy perfecting their killer persona’s for this place, not Rimmy or the Vagabond but something darker bloodier. Geoff’s out of his mind giggling as he whittles it down to one last terrified person. Michael who loves when they fight back - even more when someone kills him and he gets to come back and sing song “where are you?” Jack’s utter silence and almost tender care when she whispers for them to hush just as she takes them down. Gavin who rarely plays but when he does it’s with a viscous sort of glee and he always, always has Rye or Michael stalking about -not playing but to torment and chase.

Sometimes when someone has given them a particularly good game they post the video online, or play it on the screens of the bank their in the middle of heisting as a tribute or an intimidation tactic.

Very few sent to the farm see daylight once more and those that do live in fear of the thing they witness pulling people into the sky of the screams of the hooked and eerie spider like legs and the whispered voices of those hunting them.

Hihihi. Are requests open? If not then just ignore this. If yes, then I have a request. What if MC leaves the RFA because Rika was back and everyone was focusing on her more. Mc decides that she's not needed or wanted anymore so she just disappears with the help of Saeran (since he still hates Rika for the whole brainwashing thing). It can be a mini-fic or a scenario or whatever. 😊😊 Love love love your work btw 😍 best author ever

Anon said:  Your headcanons are really awesome! I always love reading them. This is a bit sad but I have this HC that there were probably a lot of people who supported Rika being the first and original party coordinator of the foundation, so when MC took her place they think she’s not good enough and compares her to Rika, send her emails wanting her to leave. These start to get to MC so how does the RFA help her?

This one was interesting to do! Spoilers for the secret ends ahead. Also, in everyone’s except Seven’s, MC didn’t end up with anyone after the first 11 days.

General Scenario:

  • After the first party, you thought everything would go great
  • But everything seemed to go downhill
  • The lists get longer, and there’s more guests who knew Rika more than you
  • You’ve even gotten a few emails from guests requesting your resignation, because they believed only Rika was good enough for a job like this
  • After awhile, it started wearing down on you
  • To make things worse, a few parties later and Rika returns fully recovered
  • She works with you instead of replacing you
  • You find it really nice, but it only emphasizes your insecurities
  • Even most of the RFA seem to be falling back into giving her all of the glory
  • You just can’t take it anymore and you have a breakdown after one of the meetings
  • Saeran finds you and you accidentally end up spilling everything
  • You voiced that you just wanted to disappear
  • After a few minutes of silence, he agrees to help you
  • With his skills, you manage to run away without anyone knowing

Zen:

  • He’s really worried when you don’t log into the messenger after a whole day
  • He noticed you’d been down lately, but you always claimed to be fine
  • He drops by the apartment to check on you, and he finds it completely empty with your phone and computer buzzing with missed notifications
  • He tries to call you or find you in your usual spots, but to no avail
  • He informs the RFA and implores Seven to find you
  • He visits the hacker’s house to help where he can
  • Somehow, he had a gut feeling when he saw Saeran looking a bit guilty
  • Forcefully gets the information out of the younger twin
  • When he gets the address to your location, he goes to you right away
  • As soon as you open the door, he’s begging for forgiveness if he made you feel insecure like that
  • He’s voicing his worries and begging you to come back and somehow his confession slips up
  • This really moves you, but you’re still not ready to come back
  • For a long while, you only allow Zen to see you and he respects your wishes and keeps your whereabouts a secret
  • After several really long talks, he coaxes you back into the group
  • He’s so much more protective when it comes to guests’ comments though

Yoosung:

  • He had been very caught up with Rika back, so he kind of got absorbed in helping her whenever he could
  • He thinks you’ve been in the chatroom, but realizes you’re not when he compliments you on something and you don’t respond
  • He checks old chats and finds out it’s been quite awhile since you’ve joined one
  • It makes him feel worse when it seemed that the rest of the RFA had noticed a while ago
  • He feels horrible and guilty
  • He goes to Seven’s house to ask where you are, but Seven doesn’t even know
  • Saeran makes some vague comment with a bitter undertone, and it tips Yoosung off
  • They get into an argument while Yoosung is demanding to know where you are
  • Finally, he tells Yoosung how you felt
  • Yoosung is in shock and he gets super depressed for awhile
  • He knows you won’t answer, but he starts texting you every day saying how much you’re missed and loved
  • He does this for a month so it becomes habit
  • You actually are reading them though, and finally you decide to reply
  • He’s in such shock and apologizing so much through text
  • You refuse to take his calls or talk to him in person for a long time, so text is mainly how you communicate
  • Still, this starts to rebuild your relationship until you’re finally willing to meet him face to face again He takes the opportunity to show you how much he’s changed and to show how much he cares for you
  • It still takes time for you to fully trust him again, but he’s so steady and patient
  • He really does show you how wonderful and capable of a person you are

Jaehee:

  • She wasn’t close with Rika, but her coming back meant bigger parties
  • Jaehee got dragged into doing more work in the process
  • So, she really hadn’t been talking to you much
  • She noticed your absence when she texted for your opinion on something and you didn’t reply after nearly two days
  • She tried calling and emailing…but just came to the conclusion you were busy or ill or something
  • But the rest of the RFA notice the same and finally announce you ran away
  • Jaehee is really worried because she knows you wouldn’t run unless you had a good reason
  • She doesn’t tell the others and pours herself into researching your whereabouts
  • While Saeran was careful in hiding you, Jaehee knew your patterns and soon found a local cafe you frequented
  • She asks if you could talk, and you don’t have the heart to refuse
  • You tell her everything that happened, and she’s mad and crying because you didn’t tell her and you’re crying because she’s crying
  • You have this whole touching moment in the corner of this cafe
  • She doesn’t tell the others, and she won’t
  • She knows where you’re coming from and doesn’t force you to return if you don’t want to
  • She’is kind of angry with those guests who made you feel that way
  • She helps you rebuild a life in the town you choose
  • As long as she keeps in touch with you, she respects your wishes and keeps you away from the RFA

Jumin:

  • With Rika’s return, old wounds and scars from V started popping up within Jumin
  • He started distancing himself from the RFA, logging in less and working more
  • Finally, he just needs a full break and goes on month long business trip
  • While there, he sorts things out and figures it’s not fair to you because you worked just as hard and seem to care about him
  • So he comes back only to find you had run away awhile ago and no one can find you
  • His worry pushes him into action
  • He’s hiring people left and right to find you
  • Knowing he has the resources to actually find you, Saeran steps in and stops Jumin, explaining that you don’t want to be found
  • He has to eventually come clean about helping you run
  • Jumin was already a bit bitter when it came to Saeran because of V, but he was tempted to feel even more so now
  • But then Saeran disclosed your location
  • The younger twin had been watching you though, and he knows you haven’t been doing well
  • Jumin thinks he’s fine, until he finally faces you
  • His vision blurs with tears and he can’t help but hold you tight in his arms, pleading for you to never leave him again
  • You’ve missed him as well, so you’re willing to sit down with him and just talk
  • While he listens to your concerns, he reasons with you to go back
  • After all, he went through the same recently and he doesn’t want you cutting ties like that
  • He’s patient as you slowly make your way back into the group and heal

Seven:

  • He feels very uncomfortable with Rika there, especially after all that happened
  • He’s still talking with the RFA, but rarely, and he avoids Rika altogether
  • He’d also noticed you hadn’t been yourself
  • But because you thought he was having a hard time you acted like everything was fine
  • Before running off, you had made Saeran promise not to tell Seven anything, thinking he would be better off without someone incompetent like you
  • Seven noticed your absence almost immediately, since you practically dropped off the face of the earth
  • He starts thinking his old agency is out for revenge
  • Now he’s terrified for you life and works day and night trying to find any trace of you
  • Saeran watches as his brother loses sleep and peace of mind and he just can’t stand it anymore
  • He casually leaves a big clue open on his laptop
  • Of course, Seven finds it and looks for you immediately
  • When he finds you, there’s a mix of yelling and crying from him
  • He makes you tell him everything…from your feelings to your plan to the guest emails
  • He wanted to know every detail and try to help you recover
  • He understands you don’t want to go back with Rika there…and he doesn’t feel comfortable with it either
  • None of you could recover with something so symbolic of past trauma constantly there
  • But he doesn’t think it healthy to cut ties with the rest of the RFA either, since they were like second family
  • So, he starts searching and finds a quiet house in a place that’s very…very far from the others
  • Once he buys it, he asks you to marry him…and soon
  • Of course you agree, and a few weeks later you, him, and Saeran move away
  • You all still keep in touch with the RFA through the chat and occasionally parties, but the distance allows you all to concentrate on healing and building up your own family

s4, breaking the fourth wall, the arg, and gaslighting as literary device

And if the pretentious title didn’t frighten you away, or cause you to immediately unfollow / block me, I offer some thoughts:

Following the cues left by the hot mess s4, it’s reasonable to assert the following (which has been asserted just about non-stop since each of the episodes aired; I am not pretending to be original here):

  • s4 is fucky in a way that seems to call attention to its own fuckyness, especially if you take events and themes of the previous series as guidelines for what to expect / how things work in the world of Sherlock. (A ton of people have done a ton of work on this, but thanks to @antisocial-otaku for making it clear how frickin obvious this pattern is, here.)

As much as recent arg developments have been A Ride, I really think we’ve missed the obvious, because it wasn’t nearly as much of a challenge as people were looking for / as the fandom genius hive brain is capable of meeting. I think we’ve been looking too hard.

The puzzle, the thing we are supposed to figure out, is s4 itself. The game is simply this: we are invited to have discernment with regard to what is and what is not possible in the world of BBC Sherlock, and to conclude, as most people did, that much of s4 is, indeed, not compatible with the world of Sherlock. The truth of the narrative is in the subtext, as almost everyone here has argued.

The narrative of s4 is, for the most part, really hard to get hold of, and full of content that blatantly works against everything the show has tried to set up so far. As much as I appreciate attempts to make sense of s4 as is, my mind, like a lot of people’s, recoils when asked to consider (for example) that the people who wrote this:

.

Also wrote this:

.

You’ve all seen the evidence. You’ve all watched The Final Problem and thought–what the hell is this?

People in this fandom were crying foul from the moment TST ended. I think we were already playing the arg then (if such a thing exists), and we kept playing it all through s4, because we were thinking critically about the episodes, and questioning the reality status of the story with which we were presented.

Up until recently, I would have said, meh, maybe this apparent lack of skill on the part of the showrunners was deliberate, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe they just threw in a ton of excess detail (like Mr. Glowy Skull) because why not? I am not very big on writerly intention. The text I’m presented with, I feel free to interpret however I wish, and this, to me, is the point of s4. It undoes itself. It undoes the text of series 1-3. It invites critique in a whole new way. Regardless of what does or does not happen next, I will always choose to question this narrative, to read against the text, because that reading is more interesting and less infuriating. s4, like mofftiss, lies.

But.

The part that makes me think the arg is happening right in front of us, and it’s still live:

This fucking thing.

This “John and Mary really love each other” barf festival video, released on 28 February. (Savage and efficient crit here, by @smoljohnlock)

WHY NOW?

I could see, maybe, that video flying as an s4 preview, but we have it released here, now, after…all that, when we know that the picture being presented in it is nowhere near the reality that we got in the narrative.

I don’t want to say it’s a sign. I don’t know, man. I’m tired. We’re all tired. But that video certainly did invite a renewal of the wtf-was-that outrage of s4, didn’t it?

The fourth wall, in my opinion, has already been broken.

The show has been teaching us how to observe, and not just see, to think critically, and to look for solutions to puzzles, since the beginning. Now it’s turning the function of detective over to us.

Just like the #sherlocklive game was designed to allow us to practice our puzzle solving on a small scale, so is s4. The entire narrative invites us to sit up, take notice, and say, come on, that can’t be how it really happened.

I’m still not going to predict the future here. The show has broken the fourth wall before, and paid off careful observation, via the “1895″ clues. It might be doing that with the “March 8″ billboard thing. It might not. When I say that the narrative is unfinished, I mean exactly that–it lacks an ending (much like my languishing WiPs…sorry about those, btw). What will happen next? Who knows? None of us. Signs (that’s literal, billboard-type signs) point to something more.

BUT IS IT ART?

So: we have been presented with not one, but two false narratives. If mofftiss finish their damn story, and offer some sort of explanation for all the fuckery of s4, then we’ll have been told a bunch of lies in-story, about “what happened” to John and Sherlock, and a bunch of extratextual lies, about s4 being finished after three episodes.

I will always assert, regardless of what happens next, that the in-story lies are there, and believing the textual level of the narrative makes less sense / is less happy making than believing that the story lies. As for the bigger lie, about the length of s4 / the end of this narrative–we’ll see.

It’s a peculiar choice, this, as modern storytelling goes. Rather than just, you know, tell the story they wanted to tell, about a detective and his blogger, they’re really going the long way round. If the “s4 is fake” reading is confirmed, and there is a plan in place, it’s show-offy. It’s audacious. It’s gaslighting the audience to make a point. It’s putting us through an experience–the textual level content of s4–and asking us to believe something contrary to that experience.

It’s not…enjoyable? Like with everything else, I think I’ll be left questioning why this way, and not some other way. It is, potentially, fascinating.

If this is what we think it is, we’ve been playing all along, without even trying.

a Yom Kippur message for Jewish victims of abuse and/or trauma

you don’t have to forgive people who don’t ask for forgiveness or who don’t deserve forgiveness. I talked to a Rabbi about this and he said that when someone doesn’t ask for forgiveness that the best thing to do is try and give yourself some sort of closure and let go of your anger. I’m of the opinion this also applies to people who should not receive forgiveness even if they ask for it.

you’re not a bad Jew for not forgiving those who traumatized you. sometimes forgiveness isn’t an option and that’s ok. G-D wants you to be safe and take care of yourself.

Sorting Sense8

For those who are new to the sortinghatchats system, our basics post is here. But to sum it up: the way we play this game, your “primary” house is WHY you do things and your “secondary” house is HOW.

We just really like defining our terms, okay. It makes us happy.

Lito is probably the easiest of the lot to sort– a Slytherin Primary and Slytherin Secondary who uses both these aspects of himself to survive, thrive, and find joy. As a Slytherin Primary, his first priorities are himself and the people he loves– a short list that tentatively grows over the course of the series. Lito’s journey is, among other things, the story of a young Slytherin coming into his own as a responsible agent. Lito wants things, selfishly and emotionally– he loves in the same way.

It is not Dani or the horror of her situation that drive Lito to make his decisions at the end of season one, but Hernando’s leaving. Dani’s situation threw Lito into angst and chaos, but he stood by his priorities– his career, his privacy, and his comfortable life. Hernando, both braver and then fonder of Dani than Lito, was the catalyst that pushes Lito to overthrow his entire world to be brave.

(By season two, however, Dani is solidly in Lito’s deepest circles of loyalty. She’s family, then, and if the plot of season one repeated somehow, it would go rather different.)

Lito’s Slytherin secondary is also fairly obvious, as he’s the sensate called on whenever someone needs a lie, a distraction, or a bit of help with overdramatics. His acting is not just a job and a skill, but something  he finds deep joy, validation, and power in. It’s an important part of his personality– his ability to shift, perform, and transform.

Hernando, Lito’s boyfriend, is a Ravenclaw Primary, a contrast which causes both conflict and growth in their relationship. Deliberate, confident, kind, and cerebral, Hernando provides both practical ballast and a call to bravery for Lito– in turn, Lito’s passion, ambition, and flexibility make Hernando’s life a better, brighter place. But when it came down to a choice between staying with the man he loved, or refusing to be complicit, however indirectly, in terrible things, Hernando chose to walk away– and Lito, bless his heart, chose to follow.

(I would also acquiesce rather quickly to claims that Hernando is actually just a very “smart-flavored” Gryffindor).

Hernando loves Lito’s playful Slytherin Secondary, though his is a little quieter– a Hufflepuff Secondary. He loves Lito by waiting for him, by showing up and being present and waiting for him to be brave. He eventually acts as catalyst to change his and Lito’s world not by convincing, persuading, discussing, or charging at the issue but by simply walking away. Hufflepuff secondaries are often overlooked but often form the backbone or bedrock of whatever communities or efforts they support. By leaving, Hernando yanks the rug out from under Lito’s feet and forces him to learn how to stand.

Look also at how he pulls off the scene when his asshole student projects the pictures of him and Lito. He takes in the attack, and then with a patient confidence uses all his knowledge and skill as an academic and a lecturer to reclaim and transform the moment. He turns something meant to shame him into a moment of pride and beauty, while calmly forcing the attacker to shrink in shame of his own making. In spaces that Hernando has embodied and built– his home and relationship, his classroom– he can wield an immense and debilitating power, underestimated by those who expect strength to be something more straightforward and aggressive.

Dani is a Slytherin Primary as well, though I dither about her secondary– either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. Whichever one she doesn’t have, she occasionally pretends she does. I think she’s a Hufflepuff secondary (look at how she gets Lito the interview in Hollywood), but with a convincing veneer of Slytherin. She’s the “well I know a guy” version of the Hufflepuff secondary– at her happiest she is thriving and succeeding using the connections and knowhow she’s gathered, all in the service of people she loves.

Wolfgang is another Slytherin Primary– unlike Lito, who had to recalibrate to lift Hernando’s needs (and Dani’s) above his own ambitions, Wolfy is more likely to need to remember to value his own needs and wants. In some ways, he’s got a parallel arc with Kala, there, as she too goes on a journey to accept that she wants and that sometimes she can have and that doesn’t make her evil.

When we meet Wolfy, the only person he cares about is Felix, his scrappy, loyal best friend who I like to imagine one day gets to meet Capheus and watch terrible B action movies with him. Wolfy’s Slytherin primary is fairly obvious to any character with eyes, ears, or a brain stem, and so various plots around him turn on that loyalty– hurting Felix to punish Wolfy, rewarding him to court Wolfy. It’s a character role more often given to the sweet beloved and it’s rather delightful to see that dynamic play out with the gangly, startled Felix, who doesn’t understand how important he is.

Wolfy’s secondary is Hufflepuff– the house of patience and toil. A deliberate and reserved fellow, Wolfy just keeps going until he either breaks or succeeds. One of the assets being a sensate provides him is that he can borrow others’ flexibilities (or, rather, have those flexibilities anxiously thrust at him, when he seems on the verge of breaking). He and Lito serve each other especially well in this respect, with Lito stepping in to lie and maneuver when a flexible hand is needed, and Wolfy stepping in for Lito when he needs to stand in front of an oncoming force and refuse to budge, bow, or back away.

Kala, a Ravenclaw secondary, complements as opposed to supplements Wolfy’s secondary skills. When Wolfy’s resources and opportunities run low during his methodical murder of the men who almost killed Felix in season one’s climax, Kala steps in to provide additional destructive ballast in the form of kitchen sink explosives. Where Wolfy is terminator-level stubborn, carrying a host of earned skills and some terrifying patience to the battleground, Kala is prepared, inquisitive, and quick-thinking. As they both came into their own, and as they learned to lean on each other and trade strengths and skills, I think the pair of them would have turned into an even more terrifying duo of persistence predators.

Kala’s a Gryffindor Primary who’s interacted with very few real dilemmas in her life. She feels things strongly and with certainty, despite her lingering doubts about her ability to be a good person and to know wrong from right. It’s that strong desire to be good, to know what the right thing is and to do it, that marks her as a Gryffindor. She’s someone who cares about being passionate, righteous, and good, but she’s never had an enemy force to charge or a thorny path to defy. She’s always known what the sensible next step was– love her family, go to university, marry the nice man who loves her– but as she grows older she can tell there’s something missing. She keeps doing the “right” things, but she doesn’t care, and she wants so badly to care.

She worries she’s “bad,” maybe even just amoral, but the fact that this upsets her contradicts her worries– as does the fact that, when moral quandaries she does care about thump down at her feet, she reacts with immediate moral certainty. When she learns about the unethical activities of Rajan’s pharmaceutical company, her response is instant and righteous. It is wrong, she knows it, and she won’t stand for it. When shit hits the fan, Kala doesn’t dither or hesitate.

Despite that, much of her first season of story arc is Kala doing just that– dithering and hesitating over questions of love, fidelity, and marriage. She knows what’s supposed to happen, what she’s supposed to want, and she sits for most of the season in the middle of that quandary. On first glance, Kala can even look like a “burned” Gryffindor: someone who cares deeply about doing the right thing, but has lost their faith in their own intuition or goodness– or even in the idea of right and wrong itself.

But Kala’s not “burned” or frightened– rather, she’s just sort of morally bored.

Doing what is right and good matters to her, and Kala is passionate and  unflinching when it comes to those big questions– and marrying and loving Rajan should be one of those big questions. The thing is– it’s not. Not for Kala, and so she’s left in a tremulous in-between where she can’t rely on her gut, instincts, or desires to drive her to action.

Kala has never really wanted anything before. She’s never had big, important decisions thrown at her feet, and she’s intellectually certain this marriage thing should probably be a big deal. But no matter how she struggles to care about this and make a decision that comes from the heart, she can’t force it on herself. The inability to care here and to act intuitively makes her feel adrift and insincere. It’s not just that she’s not passionate about marrying Rajan– she’s not even passionate about not marrying him. It’s all a wash. Adultery, psychic or otherwise, is something that Kala vaguely thinks she should care about– but she doesn’t.

(Rajan, like Wolfy and Dani, is a Slytherin/Hufflepuff– he cares first and foremost about the people he loves, and he’s even fairly good at it, caring for Kala warmly and respectfully.

Like Lito, Dani, and Wolfy, Rajan’s a Slytherin primary who hasn’t really bothered supplementing his “me and mine” morality with some sort of additional, larger set of guidelines. He wants to be okay, he wants Kala to be okay, and he likes to be nice. His quick and actual turn-around on the malevolent pharmaceutical practices is an aspect of his Slytherin– his wife cares and so as soon as he has time to digest her emotions, he cares, too, and morever, he acts in an immediate and effective way. It’s not even that he’s doing that to make Kala happy– it’s that it matters to Kala and therefore it is important and right.

His Hufflepuff secondary shows in the company he’s inherited and the ways he’s invested and buried in its mechanisms, his ability to play well with others without ever seeming to “transform” to do so (in the way a Slytherin secondary would), and his patient, kind courtship of Kala.)

In the style of Katniss Everdeen, the inspiring power of Capheus’s Gryffindor secondary astonishes him with both the quality and quantity of its effect. Gryffindor secondaries with such political and televised presences can becomes “figures” instead of people– despite their “realness” often being what the masses like and respond to in them. Capheus, like Katniss volunteering for Prim or mourning Rue, is just being himself– but it makes him into Van Damn the same way Katniss became the Mockingjay.

Capheus is good, and he believes in things until they happen. “I think it’s going to be a really good day,” he says. Capheus’s faith is something that can and does change his world. It’s the same thing that inspires even his enemies to like him– like the fellow who came to warn him mid-season 2 and promised him his vote if he lived.

On the primary side: Capheus has a strong and emotional sense of right and wrong, but also a willingness to hold himself away from things he think he cannot change. But, as he becomes more aware of his own power and how he might affect the world, he finds it impossible to keep himself in the shadows. He is like his father, which he and his mother fight about. Capheus cannot sit still when the world is broken and (and the “and” here is important) when he thinks he can change that world for the better. Like much of the cast, he’s a Gryffindor primary, who holds a strong and kind internal compass in his chest.

Losing her mother, her burdens dropped soundly on her young shoulders, left Sun growing up with a yawning absence and a sense of always trying to play catch-up. She was supposed to be her mother, to care for her brother, despite being a child herself. As an adult, she blames herself for her brother’s crimes and feels guilt for not being “good” enough– for not being who and what she was supposed to be.

Sun tries to build herself into what she thinks she should be– but she is at her strongest and most joyous when she is being what she is and just acting. There is a sense, with Sun, that she is always holding back– from that first clenched fist in her opening scene in the pilot to the moment she bursts into potentially murderous action in the season two climax. She has trouble trusting herself enough to act on her instincts– a “burned” Gryffindor who doesn’t believe in her own goodness, value, or strength– except for single spark-bright moments when she does. This might be why she likes fighting so much– for an instant, in the ring,  she knows exactly what she needs to do and she does it unflinching. After a season of considering, dithering, and thinking, she makes the snap decision in the climax of season two to go after her brother and it is a release and a culmination.

Sun tries to use reason and logic, a Ravenclaw’s tools, to supplement for her lack of faith in her Gryffindor. Her mother gave her that initial rule— take care of your brother. And she does: we see in the beginning of season one how aware she is of where her brother’s likely haunts are, how practiced she is at finding him. She carries her position in the company with grace and conviction even when having to deal with sexists who dismiss her. When considering whether or not to take the fall for her brother, she doesn’t listen to her gut screaming against it but instead walks and thinks and tries to use her reason to convince herself it is the right thing to do. She continues on trying to follow her mother’s gift of a system– take care of your brother– at the expense of everything she has.

The Sun who leaves the prison is different from the lonely young woman who entered it– this “new” Sun would never had given up her life for her brother’s. After friendship, connection, and support from the other inmates (and her fellow sensates), Sun is far more convinced of her own value and her own right to freedom. After her mother’s death, her father’s distance, and the adult-sized burdens she’s carried since childhood, Sun before this lacked any evidence that she was worth something to anyone.

Painting with her friends, conversation, and camaraderie were all influential in changing Sun’s view of her value, but one of the most influential moments was when the guards were killing her and her friend came to her rescue. Sun believes in action more than words, and that was certainly a clear-cut message about what her friend thought Sun’s life was worth. As she heals throughout the story, she swaps out some of logic she uses to guilt herself instead for the faith her friends have in her.

Those friends also give a nod to Sun’s secondary– Hufflepuff. It is the work, patience, and time Sun has put into things that pay out in the end for her. This is as true in her fighting as it is in the kindnesses she pays to others. Her teacher, her inmate friends, and the cop with the crush on her are all examples of this– anyone who knows Sun knows she is good– so good they are all willing to fight for her in their own ways. Her teacher hides her. Her inmate friends support her and even kill for her. The cop, who has seen her grit and goodness exactly once, immediately believes her and wants to be on her side. Similarly, it is years of patience and toil that have left her talented and powerful as a fighter.

Riley is very tired and very sad, and that makes her sorting complex from the outside. Whatever her primary is, it’s burned to almost a crisp. She’s not a Slytherin, who prioritizes personal loyalties and obligations first. “Burned” Slytherins try to cut off all their emotional ties for self-protection, but Riley has no angst or barrier around caring for people, despite her losses. The same goes for Hufflepuff, the other “loyalist” House. Hufflepuffs care in a broader and fairer way than Slytherins, but the heart of it is still connection and obligation. “Burned” Hufflepuffs also try to limit their caring, exhausted and aching, and we don’t see that with Riley. She doesn’t seem to be avoiding connection when she’s hurting, and as she heals over the course of the series she doesn’t leap for and glory in the new connections she builds and accepts.

This leaves as options a “burned” Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, the two “idealist” Houses. Gryffindors value their gut where Ravenclaws value their reason– when a Gryffindor “burns,” they lose faith in their ability to know what’s right, to feel it, and to trust their intuition. When a Ravenclaw “burns,” they lose faith in their ability to think, assess, understand, comprehend, or decide. As Riley heals and comes into her own in season two, she seems to glory in her own growing faith in her inner compass. There is a delight in knowing her path and sinking her teeth into a fight that is particularly Gryffindor.

Additionally, like many young women who fall into the “manic pixie dream girl” mold, Riley is a Gryffindor secondary. Creative and genuine, the way she unflinchingly embodies what she does is apparent especially in her music and its reported effects on people. People are drawn to Riley, whether she wants them or not. She has a “shine” that’s exhausting, illuminating, and powerful. It’s what drew that one slick, creepy drug dealer’s notice, and also what lets her charm and win over our grumpy Scottish sensate friend. When entrenched in the paranoia of the sensate community, Riley cracks open their defenses with a moment of brave and risky honesty–letting him see where she and Will are–and, what’s more, he believes her when she does it.

Will, despite having one of the spottier character consistencies in the story, settles pretty soundly as a Hufflepuff Primary/Ravenclaw Secondary. He’s a loyal, dependable kid who hangs a lot of his identity and worth on his allegiance to groups and families– he’s a cop, he’s a sensate, and both these groups matter enormously to his self-image. He’s torn between those loyalties– abandoning his partner and his father, his obligations to his new sensate family. Of the cast, he’s by far the most sympathetic to Whispers, who is “like them.”

Will’s best skills are showcased in his early season two interactions with Whispers, when he plays Sherlock to identify where the holding cell is, gathering data, pulling information out of Whispers’s shoes and wall outlets, and extrapolating onward. He pulls long cons (pretending they were still in Iceland, etc) or detailed, sturdy plans. He likes prep, experience, and back up– he hates it when Riley has to go off on her own to Chicago without him or any fallbacks, but Gryffindor Riley delights in the movement. He’s a cop-flavored Ravenclaw Secondary, and effective with it.

Nomi’s yet another Gryffindor Primary in this cluster of Gryffindors. She has a strong and intuitive sense of right and wrong, something that drives her to make good and effective changes in the world. Stepping in to take the fall for Bug was a practical and selfless move that she carries with her humbly. She’s the kind of person who might claim and believe that “anyone would have done the same.”

It’s also something, however, that can lead her to neglect anything outside her cause of the moment. Nomi can get tunnel vision, such as when she abandons her sister at the dress fitting, not even waiting to hear the end of Teagan’s question. Nomi is deeply invested in whatever her highest priority is, which makes her an effective agent in the plot, but which also means she can abandon things (at least temporarily) that do genuinely mean the world to her. She loves her sister, but they got news about Angelica’s cabin and that takes priority in that moment.

Nomi can’t do things in halves– she’s all in, or she’ll have to get back to you later. Her sister, who seems to be a loyalist house (either Hufflepuff or Slytherin) is thrown off and disappointed by what surely feels to her to be a lack of Nomi’s affection (and certainly is a lack of Nomi’s attention)– but in the tradition of a good loyalist, Teagan seems to be always willing to be there when Nomi pops back into her life.

There’s a certainty and validation, as well as a mutual awe, that Nomi and Amanita find in each other here. Both Gryffindor Primaries, they supplement and support each other in the context of a larger and often disappointing world. In a bold Gryffindor way (Amanita is a Gryffindor secondary, as well as a primary), they make their own magic, joy, and beauty. Whether in the eclectic, personal space of their home, escaping a hospital in the back of a cab, sharing fries and pot brownies, or kissing in the forest where Angelica once burned down her own home and killed a man doing it, Amanita and Nomi light the scene themselves. They’re self-sufficient and self-motivated and self-soothing, burning from the inside out in ways they recognize in each other.

They approach situations differently in terms of methods– aka the secondary. Amanita is a beauty of a Gryffindor/Gryffindor, a sorting the writers seem to especially adore and respect. She is confrontational, brave, protective, and throws all of herself into everything she does– a set of methods that work out for her every time. She likes attention (“costume opportunity!”) for a good cause. She doesn’t maneuver, hedge, or negotiate when something is wrong in front of her– she tells off her ex-friend for her transphobia at their first Pride, she sets fire to the hospital as a distraction, breaks into the surgeon’s apartment with unconstrained glee, bursts into the aisle of Teagan’s interrupted wedding, and in general dives headfirst into the dangerous plot of Nomi’s new life.

Nomi, though also a Gryffindor primary, is quieter on the secondary. Nearly all her best successes come from years of work and her ability to humbly and truly mean the things she does. Friends hide Nomi and Amanita because of old favors and generosity on their parts. Bug turns over his whole life for them, because once Nomi turned over her whole life for him. There is a sense of fairness here. Talented and generous, Nomi’s yet another super-powered Hufflepuff secondary in the cluster. For a story that so loves the idea of skill-set-swapping and community, it makes sense there’d be an un-self-conscious love of the puff.

No please...not another Moon Sign post.

I know that moon signs are easily accessible these days, but I made this post solely for refreshing my memory on the moon signs, and to try and get a better understanding of them.

If you’d like, i’d be very interested in getting to personally know how the moon signs work. If you could answer any of these questions of your choosing, or all, I’d really enjoy reading them. Just make sure to let me know what your rising, moon, and sun sign are. Please send them in an ask :)

Questions:

1. When conflicted with trying to express yourself to someone, how do you approach the issue? For example, if you have feelings for someone, how would you tell them?

2. When you are feeling sad but are bombarded with reality such as being at work, going to school, or being around family, how do you deal with your emotions? Do you let everyone know that you feel a certain way or do you put it in the back burner and deal with it later?

3. Do you tend to manipulate people? If so, how and why?

4. When are you most happy? When are you most sad?

5. Do you deal with negative energy or do you cut the bullshit right away?

6. Are you possessive of your loved ones?

7. Would you say you are social and friendly, or shy and quiet? Or a mix of both?

8. Do you prefer the comfort of your home or out being productive?

MOON SIGNS

How can we even begin to explain the beauty that is the moon sign? It’s who we are at a personal level, when we feel vulnerable, and how we deal with our emotions. It’s a tricky sign because having the same moon sign as someone can suggest you are similar to that person, but the combination of your sun sign with your moon signs says SO much about you. It already sets you apart from the rest of the people with the same sun sign as you. Your moon sign gives you individuality and shows who you are…at heart.

Moon in Aries: You are so full with emotion whether it be happiness, rage, sadness, that when it comes to this placement, the Arian qualities are even stronger. You are very impulsive and can act on whatever you’re feeling right then and there, without question. If you find yourself letting your heart rule your head this placement would be why. The fact that you can be impatient and get bored easily is actually beneficial for you because it makes you achieve things that most people would be afraid to do.

Moon in Taurus: You are what home feels like. You want security, comfort, and financial stability and are willing to give this to the people you care most about. You are loyal and it shows. Although you can be the most stubborn one of the group, there’s a reason why you like things a certain way, you just know what works for you. You can be materialistic, often times taking great pride in your luxurious possessions which can put pressure on your friends to live the same way as you. Not everyone has to or wants to live as lavishly as you so try not to compare others to you.

Moon in Gemini: You are witty, clever, funny, and always want to be mentally stimulated. Since the moon sign is about emotions, with this placement you may find yourself over analyzing your thoughts to the point that you try to rationalize your emotions in a logical manner instead of just feeling. There’s a lot going on in your mind, as most air signs, but since you carry the twin personality, it can be more intense for you. Take a breather and remember that everything will be okay. There’s nothing a good conversation can’t fix.

Moon in Cancer: Very in tune with your emotions, you can soak up any feeling, whether good or bad, like a sponge. Because of this you can become irritable to those who do not understand your emotions because you wish people would be just as understanding as you. However, manipulating people to get what you want out of them is not the greatest idea. Try to be more vocal about your feelings instead of just soaking it all in. You are a very caring person, who is loyal to the end, and because of this people feel very safe and loved around you.

Moon in Leo: Yes, you thrive off attention, what Leo doesn’t? However, because this is the moon sign, you prefer attention in mainly comfortable situations. At home you are the entertainer and very theatrical in your ways. Very domineering and bossy, you are good at leading others while knowing the importance of being fair. Your appearance is very important to you so you’d rather fake it until you make it instead of showing people how you really feel. A stubborn lion, you do not like to take advice from people but can give it very well so try not to let your ego get the best of you.

Moon in Virgo: You can be your own worst enemy since you criticize yourself the most. Having a low self esteem can bring you down, but don’t be so hard on yourself you are doing the best you can. Living a life of routine makes you happy and feel secure and there is nothing wrong with that. You show your love through action and have an undying love for those you care about. So much so that you voluntarily go the extra mile for them. People admire this about you, but don’t let them take advantage of you either. Learn to take care of yourself the same way you do for others.

Moon in Libra: Dependency on another person is what you crave. This is not a bad thing, but it leaves you feeling very lonely when you’re not around someone you care about. Very indecisive, you never know what you want often looking for answers in other people, but remember that you know what is best for yourself. You are social, charismatic, and bring peace to those around you. People feel comfortable around you because you have the skill of changing yourself for the benefit of the other person. You can be flirty with just about anyone but at the end of the day intellectual conversations stimulate you best.

Moon in Scorpio: Emotions are felt very intensely with this placement. You either love something or hate it. Like Aquarius you find interest in the odd and eccentric. Your intuition can be very strong and you show this by picking up the emotions of others. Your life can be all over the place because you aren’t happy living a normal life so you thrive in drama and chaos. You can be intimidating because what Scorpio isn’t? Stubborn but loyal and passionate, when you want something, once you get it, you will never let it go.

Moon In Sagittarius: Upbeat, happy, and optimistic, you believe there is a bright side to everything. You have the power of chilling everyone out so people enjoy your company because it’s full of good energy. An adventurer, you love exploring and getting to know the great outdoors. You can be quite athletic since you are for the most time on your feet doing something active. You are not afraid of commitment but refuse to settle down because you know life has so much to offer and you don’t want anyone or anything holding you back. Freedom is your happiness.

Moon in Capricorn: Handling emotions is not your greatest forte. In fact you specialize in hiding your emotions which can be unhealthy and put you in more stress. Try to talk things out with a loved one and you will see how much it can benefit you. Cold and reserved, you are not an affectionate person but show your love by being useful to those you care about. You seek validation through your hard work, possibly becoming a workaholic. Productivity is important to you so you don’t let emotions stop you from achieving success.

Moon in Aquarius: Emotions? Come again? It’s not that you don’t have emotions it’s just that you have mastered the act of not letting them affect you. If something needs to get done it is going to get done regardless of how you feel. However, you must come back in tune with your emotions every once in a while. At your best, you are observant, curious about human nature, and want to learn all their quirks. Because of this, you might give off a superiority complex since you think you know more than others. Being different and going against the norm, in the end, is all you could care about. Optimistic, friendly, and revolutionary, you attract a lot of friends this way.

Moon in Pisces: You are pretty intuitive with not only your emotions, but of those around you as well. You might feel like you can sympathize and literally understand every emotion a person has ever felt. This can cause some sort of psychic ability. As compassionate as you are, people might walk all over you so be cautious of who you open up to. You may find yourself drifting away or day dreaming because you are in awe of all the things the universe has to offer. Lastly, you are a great friend because you can understand everyone’s side and you always try to put yourself in other people’s shoes.

Bissexual-harem route would be a terrible idea because...
  • Yusuke: And i thought things would be different for me, at least this time. I even painted your smile so many times, why didn't you say anything?
  • Ryuji: Aw man. I know you're a ladykiller of sorts but after all we've been through... Guess that that "my place is also by your side" was just another lie, huh?
  • Mishima: I should've expected this. I wonder if you really meant what you said about caring about me...i'm a zero, after all.
  • ---
  • Bonus (for those who want)
  • Akechi: Why do thing like this always happen to me? And i believed in all that talk that i wouldn't be used again... What an ace detective that i am.

Things i don’t like about the sims (3) community

keep in mind this is a general opinion formed by what i’ve seen happen in this community over the 5 years i’ve been here. this is not addressed to anyone specifically, but if you fit in the list you should second guess your actions to make this place just a tad friendlier :)

welcoming all simblrs post

literally:

  • people don’t give two shits about your stories. there’s usually the same 2 or 3 people who read your in-depth stories and comment nice things. the others don’t even bother liking if it’s more than 3 lines of text???
  • nobody gives a damn about sims stories that dont include images: people apparently need images to enjoy a story. have you ever read an actual book? don’t judge a story just because it lacks visual stimulation. the writing will be worth your time.
  • people don’t understand metaphors and deep posts. sometimes it’s really hard to express actual things through your posts, because people will either find it too complicated, too “over edited” or too sensitive
  • about sensitive content, sometimes people fail to tag stuff perfectly and people jump straight into anon hate instead of NICELY letting them know they should add a trigger tag or w/e makes them happy. like why can’t you be nice about it instead of sending anons?
  • people assume that if you don’t have good quality posts you’re shit and you don’t deserve anything: you.are.a.hypocrite.YOU were once new and YOU were the same.
  • the “popular”simblrs idea still flows through the community after years and years, even if many big simblrs decided to be nice and open up to people
  • those who don’t bother responding but complain nobody talks to them: if you didn’t take a hiatus every 5 seconds because nobody liked your post, and responded to messages, you’d receive attention from people. engage to engage.
  • people who complain about not having enough likes/comments/reblogs etc: you HAVE TO talk to people to have them be nice to you ! you can’t just expect people to flock to your blog and shower you with adoration. don’t expect people to just comment on your stuff and you can ignore them and that’s it. you make friends. you talk to people, you thank them, you comment on their posts. THIS is how you actually get involved in the community
  • according to simblr, if you’re new you’re automatically stupid? why do we not give chances to new people?why do we only follow 3 people and only message 2 and then complain nobody talks to us? help others join in, involve them in the community,COLLAB with people, chat with them. ENGAGE TO ENGAGE
  • “SEND ME ASKS!!! ASK ME THINGS!!!” but you never bother to send the person you reblogged it from an ask yourself. if you do that you’ll 100% sure get an ask from the previous poster. don’t be an ass
  • people who come to your blog, reblog your entire cc tag and never engage again: WHY? do you just come for cc?? you could take 3 seconds of your life to scroll through the first 5-10 posts of that person’s blog and send them some nice words of encouragement or leave them some notes instead of just running away?
  • every time a new project happens 700+people reblog, comment, like etc but nobody actually ends up joining??? and if they DO join, they go inactive. like??can you NOT???or if you go inactive could you at least just tell the owner of the project? you know, someone just like you is out there managing a project on their own(or with a team!) but you can’t be bothered to do that?rude
  • we all have personal lives and it is normal to take breaks, hiatus-es and so on,but it would be great if you leave to simply make a post about it. so many people go completely inactive or disappear and it worries others, maybe something happened to them?maybe they have issues? some people DO care and they would talk to you if you left/took a break
  • responding to anon hate, reblogging drama, publicly calling out people, posting about “not caring about simsecret”. 50 things I learned from 2 years of sobriety

In celebration of my anniversary, I wanted to write out some of the things I’ve learned over the past two years.

  1. At first, you don’t know how to live your life without alcohol, and it seems impossible. One day without it seems like a crazy idea.
  2. The first day sober feels like a giant victory, and you can’t remember the last time you woke up without a hangover.
  3. You don’t know what to do with yourself when you have an urge to drink. I would constantly have a water bottle with me to sip out of instead.
  4. Your sense of taste and smell greatly increases.
  5. You notice every alcohol bottle, beer can, wine glass, liquor store, open drink, stocked fridge, new brewery, and spirits menu.
  6. Your emotions are all over the place because alcohol was your stress-reliever.
  7. You may not yet consider yourself an alcoholic, but just simply “taking a break.”
  8. Not everyone will understand why you stopped drinking, and they may judge you for it.
  9. The first 30 days feels like an eternity.
  10. You might be scared to go to AA meetings.
  11. You might go to meetings and hide in the back, hoping no one will notice you.
  12. You might leave the meetings ASAP so you can avoid talking with anyone.
  13. You constantly battle the idea of whether you’re an alcoholic or not.
  14. You read self-help books and gain insight that lasts about 10 minutes.
  15. You go to therapy and minimize your problems.
  16. In therapy you also realize that you’re having to start your life over. You have to change people, places, and things to keep you sober.
  17. Your family will be your biggest fans in your sobriety. Look to them when you feel afraid.
  18. Parties will be very difficult if alcohol is around. It’s okay to walk out if you have to.
  19. Some AA meetings will be very inspiring, others will be boring, but none of them are a waste of time.
  20. Waiting to get a sponsor will only make staying sober 10x harder. They are your best ally, confidant, and support system.
  21. After a few months of feeling sober, you realize how “foggy” your brain really was when you first began. Clarity sets in.
  22. Meeting with a psychiatrist is nothing to be afraid of. Taking medication can help your brain function better while you’re rebuilding a healthy mind.
  23. You will want SO MUCH SUGAR. If you didn’t have a sweet tooth before, you definitely will.
  24. You might over-indulge in caffeine, exercise, shopping, and other activities.
  25. Praying is always a good idea.
  26. People may tell you how you should feel, but you’re allowed to feel the things you do.
  27. Some people may not understand why it is difficult for you to quit drinking, when it’s “no big deal” for them. They probably don’t have an addiction.
  28. The hardest thing is to deal with life on life’s terms. Learning how to cope with uncomfortable or painful situations without alcohol is the biggest hurdle.
  29. Your friends, or people you thought were your friends, will change when you stop drinking. True friends, the ones that you should cherish, will not abandon you. They will love you and support you in becoming a healthy person again.
  30. If you’re like me, you may have quit alcohol to lose weight. Later on you realized it was a real problem that you had, even if you were functioning.
  31. There are many functioning alcoholics in the world. This means they still go to work & pay the bills, but are still excessively drinking.
  32. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to want your life to be better.
  33. If you have anxiety or depression, it will likely get worse when you stop self-medicating.
  34. You will start to evaluate all your relationships and ask yourself if they are healthy and supportive.
  35. You may feel like an outcast if you’re publicly shamed for not drinking.
  36. You’ll realize that people who judge you for not drinking usually have some sort of problem they are avoiding themselves.
  37. The more AA meetings you go to, the more you start to feel like a Veteran. It’s no longer scary and you feel safer than ever in those rooms.
  38. You will start to care more about your appearance and take better care of yourself.
  39. You will find things to keep you occupied, like coloring, crafting, music, the internet, to help ease your restlessness.
  40. People will start to ask you for advice about quitting drinking. You might find out that the last person you thought would come to you, will.
  41. You start to enjoy the simple things in life again; sunshine, walking the dogs, photography, spending time with family, etc.
  42. You wonder if people who are constantly talking about alcohol are as sick as you were.
  43. Your sleep will improve immensely.
  44. You are more productive and may want to work towards future goals.
  45. The smell of alcohol on someone’s breath will become repulsive.
  46. You will have bad days that you fight to stay sober. Sometimes it’s taking it minute by minute.
  47. You will realize how much you missed out on while you were drinking. It might make you sad, but you now have the opportunity to enjoy every moment in a day.
  48. You will want to help other people who are suffering, but sometimes you have to walk away from a cancerous situation.
  49. If you ever have a craving, or are thinking about taking a drink, remember why you started this sober journey in the first place.
  50. The problem for us was not alcohol. Alcohol was our solution. Eventually that solution stopped working and lead us to insanity. From insanity, we had to rebuild and relearn how to cope with life.

I really hate the feeling of being the only person who doesn't drink in my friendship group, so could I please the da2 companions react to a Hawke who doesn't drink? :)

Hey, anon, no worries, Mod Sarah doesn’t drink either. (I don’t like the smell or the taste of it).

Aveline: Fine by her. It’s healthier for them and keeps their minds clearer.

Fenris: He shrugs. More wine for him, then.

Carver: He sort of mocks his older sibling about it, and a few times tries to give them something alcoholic to see if they’ll actually like it.

Isabela: She’s mildly disappointed that they won’t drink with her, but doesn’t make them drink or mock them. “I don’t know how you go about without a drink or two to take the edge off, but whatever. That’s your right.”

Varric: He doesn’t mind or care, really. They’ll just be more capable of remembering his stories because they’re sober.

Sebastian: He praises them. “Good for you. The Maker smiles upon those who refrain from such things, for they lead to sin.”

Anders: He’s a bit surprised, but shrugs. “At least there’s one less person likely to wander drunk into my clinic, throwing up all over the floor…”

Bethany: She doesn’t tease her older sibling– she’s not that fond of alcohol, either.

Merrill: She doesn’t understand why anyone cares. “It’s just like saying you don’t like a certain food, right?” she asks, befuddled. “Why does it matter?”

summary: stan has a crush on his best friend. so, to put it lightly, he’s fucked. or so he thinks. (inspired by this post. oh, and this one. hope you enjoy!)

Stanley Uris was not one to strive from the norm. He was a clean-cut, rule-following, always in the background kind of guy.

He already stuck out without meaning too, hanging out with an eccentric group of losers all the time. But other than that, he tried to stay in line, keep his head down.

Could you really blame him though? In a small town like Derry, difference was not met kindly, at least not by people like Henry Bowers and his gang. It wasn’t worth the beating, so he just shrunk in on himself, let himself be just another kid in the crowd.

Except when he was with the Losers Club. That was the only time he felt like he could be himself. Around the most amazing group of people he’d ever had the privilege to call his friends.

Daddy Poly! McHanzo Chapter 1

Life had always been pretty good for you, giving you enough to be content with life. Your family loved you dearly, just as you loved them, and you had some amazing friends. Working at the diner kind of sucked sometimes because you had to deal with hungry, crabby people during lunch rush but most people were nice and regular’s always gave you great tips. More than enough for you to have a nice place with your best friend and no limits on your cell phone. Since life had been good to you, you weren’t a very wary person.

If you could. Can you go into detail about France like you did with North Italy? I see a lot people saying he is just a pervert when he really isn't. And I just love him so much.

SAME OMFG!!

When people talk shit about France it really makes me upset, it’s like they don’t even notice how many in-depth episodes he’s had

The thing that gives him a bad rep is that the first season of Axis Powers is based off of the really really old strips where Hima ACTUALLY MADE HIS CHARACTER LIKE THAT

Once Hima matured he created the France we all know and love, the one who appreciates beauty in everything and feels the most grief out of being immortal, the one who calls himself ‘big brother’ and assists and cares for nations as if he really is their brother

And people really do focus and the crappy doodles that made up the first part of the series

Never the less the whole “he’s a pervert and rapist” is literally just the horrible misconception that sprung out of the fucking weeaboos this fandom has.

They don’t even see what France’s personality really is like (I think a lot of them don’t realize hetalia isn’t just and anime)

France is very aware of how nations work and you can tell sometimes he really wishes he could be human.

When asked ‘which nations have physical scars’ he almost replied as if nations could carry mental and physical scars, and then you remember how many horrible wars nations had to get involved in and how many people they had to see die.

HE IS THE BIG BROTHER OF THE WORLD

I think a lot of people forget that he was there for Italy when his actual brother couldn’t be

Because lord he actually notices how much shit Italy went through.

He is an honest to god very caring person

He’s a very deep and poetic person, he understands how his life works and how human lives work and he isn’t afraid to express himself as ‘France’ to others. The way he thinks gives me the feel that he really doesn’t wish to be a nation and he always wanted to just settle down, have a family, and just eventually pass away.

He turns the grief he carries into something beautiful

Unlike a lot of nations he holds on to the humans he met and drones on thinking and wishing they could have a better life, the kind of life he’d ideally want if he was human.

He is considerate to both nations AND humans

He seems like he could have just broke long ago but he still stands tall and cares for others just like he always has, which is honestly remarkable, a lot of nations just sort of train themselves to forget humans they knew after awhile but FRANCE HOLDS ON TO HIS MEMORIES OF THEM

He’s always been nostalgic about many things but he holds on strong for the sake of being a nation and having to hold on to those responsibilities. He turns what he learned in to something he can teach others, he cares for others when no one was there to care for him, THIS IS THE PERSONALITY HIMA GAVE HIM AS HE AND HIS SERIES MATURED AND IT STILL STANDS

Also, to all of you who still think he’s a rapist

He is literally as far away from being a rapist than you can imagine

Platan comic

… It was supposed to be a very short story about a woman with eczema and her struggles. I’ve suffered from ecsema ever since birth and at some point the situations were heavy traumatic and formed one of the pillars to my low selfesteem… From open wounds, swollen legs, people refusing to hold my hand as child, blood covered hands, near danger of death from blood poisoning, and situations where the pain was so great that I couldn’t even dress my self up… the various sad experience made huge impact on how I’d seen my self and how I also behaved in public. There was so much shame, people would look, ask or want to see out of some sort of morbid curiosity… But there has always been the loving care of my mother whom I never thanked enough for taking care of me with so much patience. I really want to make this comic one day … partially for people who went through same or worse… Partially for those who keep being afraid ecsema is some sort of disease that can contaminate you (it is not). My state now is stable, thanks to some changes in lifestyle, though still gotta be careful with not overdoing some things. I hope you all can love your self, things like these make you stronger… Wishing you the best.

Tips for transitioning from 'realism' to 'cartoons'

( this is mostly for @stiles-and-the-sourwolf but you’re welcome to read it either way.)

Okay so the thing about drawing in a ‘looser’ style (or a more cartoonish style) is you must must must MUST learn to trust yourself, and be forgiving. It’s really about loosening up the 'rules’ of anatomy and letting things become more exaggerated and fluid.

It’s a huge problem that I’ve found amongst many of my artist friends who tend to draw in a more realistic and 'refined’ style. They’ve gotten into the habit of working into a piece for long periods of time, and striving for a certain level of anatomical perfection that is often—if not always—on par with photo realism. This means that their process usually involves working into small, key parts of the art until it fits together like a lovely puzzle. This is typically called the 'grid technique’, whether you use actual grids or not, and it’s perfect for creating a well rendered, full-feeling piece.

The problem is is that it tends to set you up for a few different problems when it comes to a more cartoonish style.

For one thing, cartoon anatomy is never as it should be, and things are generally never WHERE they should be, either. Buuut, that’s kind of the point, because the style leans heavily on the motion, the shape of the character, and the fluidity of their form.

What matters most in these types of styles is showing the character through their forms as much as possible, and often as SIMPLY as possible. Think about all the hundreds of Disney characters out there, and think about how each one has a very specific body shape to match their personality.

For example: Bell’s father. He’s the typical Disney short, round-bodied, mustaches father figure that you see throughout many Disney films. He has a sputtering voice, a general doofy personality, typically kind of useless, and tends to bounce around like a bouncy ball. His round form encompasses his character much better than, say, a long, tall, skinny body would.

Another (not Disney) example: Miyazaki’s strong female lead-characters. They all tend to be sort of squat, strong bodied, slightly rounder (more trustworthy) faces, with a stubborn pout. You automatically know that this girl/woman means business, and is going to kick butt and take names and, like, save someone/everyone/herself.

Now, a lot of this all comes down to animation, and the fact that simplicity is necessary for something you’re drawing a million times. The simpler the design, the easier it is to draw frame, by frame, by frame. But, even without animating, a key part of drawing in a cartoonish style is always going to be expressing as much information about the character/environment/story as possible with the smallest amount of effort.

A prime example of that would be the Tintin comics, or Charlie Brown. Each comic has it’s own level of simplicity that is, seriously, basically down to single lines and blobs of color. And if you look closely at a comic panel, you’ll probably feel like you’re falling into some abstract piece of art. But, the thing is… they work.

Tintin’s head is about 14 lines total, and yet somehow Hergé manages to bring forth a vast range of emotions and expressions with very little effort at all.

This, again, is also due to repetition. Comic books have always had a tendency to lean towards the more simplistic styles do to the whole, you know, drawing the character over and over again thing. Not that there aren’t comic book artists who totally ignore that and go into some insane levels of detail for each frame, but as a general rule, you’re going to see the 'cartoon’ style in comics. It’s easier to draw, less time consuming, and is often contributed to easier/smoother reading.

Now, trust and forgiveness.

The thing about shooting out a quick sketch is that there’s a certain level of 'I don’t give a fuck’ that goes along with it.
You’ve drawn it, it’s done, it’s out there, who cares?

And to many artists, that’s a screech-worthy sentence right there.

But, it’s sort of an integral part of loosening up your style.

Sketching or drawing out a cartoonish character takes a lot of confidence, trust, and again, that forgiveness thing. You need to teach yourself to let those lines flow freely, to trust that you can complete this figure with or without mistakes, and to forgive yourself when it doesn’t come out looking 'perfect’. This can be hard, or even next to impossible for certain realism artists to accomplish. It can be infuriating for them, especially when they can render so masterfully, and yet this simple… doodle seems to be the bane of their existence.

The trick, for me, is to set yourself up with limitations.

Try drawing with only an ink pen. No erasing, no fixing mistakes, no sketch layer. It might smudge, it might leak, and the second eye might end up too high up. Take the risk, and draw.

Try doing very light blocking with the pen, try going completely free hand and see where some of your anatomy strengths and weakness are.

Try drawing the same face over and over again, until you can get the same amount of details/information down without a second thought. Try simplifying the first drawing. Try limiting the amount of lines or shading used. Challenge yourself to be quick, to finish a complete character in ten minutes or less.

Try using a medium you’ve never used before. Learn to love it or hate it.

Try drawing with your opposite hand. (Does it look terrible? Maybe, but I bet you automatically tried to simplify and expedite the drawing process.)

Try using only blocks of color or shadow to make a face. Do not add details. See how recognizable it looks just from shading.

Try focusing on character qualities and the shapes, poses/posture, and colors that they brings to mind.

Draw a loud, boisterous person. (What shape would they be? Are they muscular, tall, threatening? Do they stand with their chest out? Do they wear reds and warm colors?)

Draw a quiet, timid person. ( are they small, hunched, slim? Do they wrap their arms around themselves a lot? Do they wear blues and browns and colors that blend in with the background?)

Draw a hunter.
Draw a mother.

Draw types of people/animals/environments you’ve never drawn before. Push yourself to do create people with more exaggerated features or postures. People with bigger, longer, skinnier, wider, smaller elements of anatomy.

And, like I said, it will be a challenge. It will feel silly and frustrating and even demeaning. But trust me, learning to loosen up and trust yourself enough make mistakes and accept them can be extremely freeing no matter what style you use.
