“I met my wife when I was seventeen. I didn’t want to tell her about my schizophrenia. At the time, she liked another guy who had no issues and I didn’t want to ruin my chances. I hid the disease for a long time after we married. I would always find explanations for my strange behavior. I’d make up stories to explain my violent outbursts at work. But it got to be too much. By the time I admitted my disease, it was too late. She got a restraining order a year ago. I had an outburst and I hit her. She has forgiven me for the sake of our children, but they don’t live with me anymore. I’m on five strong medications now. I still have some difficulty controlling the pace of my thoughts. Some thoughts will begin before others end. It’s like my mind is divided. It can be tough to keep both feet in reality. But I don’t want any more problems. I’ve detached myself from everyone. I don’t speak at work. I spend my time alone. It’s my only way to live a normal life.”
Let trans men express sexuality. For fucks sake, knock this infantilization shit off. They’re not children. If a trans guy says “oh I’d suck that guys dick lmao”, or “so last night I took this girl I met on tinder back to my place”, react as you would to any guy. Don’t treat them like what they just said was naughty if that isn’t how you’d treat a cis guy.
In other news I was reading an article about a public library that has hired social workers because it’s kind of become a de facto homeless day shelter (being one of the few places in town with free restroom and air conditioning) and one complaint was “The number of homeless patrons makes me uncomfortable. The library should be welcoming to all members of the community.“ The cognitive dissonance is truly amazing.
None of these terms, other than Maladaptive Daydreaming (Disorder) and Fantasy Prone Personality are official. Some of them, such as para and character, are synonymous and just a matter of preference. Therefore don’t feel as though you have to use any of these, this is just a reference for people who want to understand more about their condition and the terms used by the community.
actuallyMaDD: A tag used by maladaptive daydreamers to share their experiences. Coined by @bpdrotten . see also: MaDD
character: A person who appears often in your daydreams. Can be fictional, original or real (such as a celebrity). Maladaptive daydreamers usually develop strong emotional attachments to their characters and characters can be very well developed with detailed personalities, relationships and backstories. see also: para, para-
Compulsive Fantasy: a lesser used term for Maladaptive Daydreaming. see also: Maladaptive Daydreaming
daydreamingart: a tag used by maladaptive daydreamers to share art or writing about the content of their daydreams. Coined by @queenofdissocation . see also: maddart
daydreaming: Just as in regular English, daydreaming refers to imagining scenarios while losing track of the real world. It is important to note that when maladaptive daydreamers refer to daydreaming they are usually referring to doing it for hours at a time if uninterrupted, whereas other people might think of daydreaming as zoning out for five minutes when bored.
daydream crash: A) when a maladaptive daydreamer is forced to come to terms with the fact their daydreams are not real, leading to discomfort and sadness or B) when these daydreams no longer have the same effect that they used to and no longer feel as good. Coined by @maladaptive-daydreams .
daydream self/dream self (or any variation): many though not all maladaptive daydreamers have daydreams that involve themselves. They may imagine a version of themselves that is realistic or idealised or anywhere in between. This character is your dream self. see also: parame
(daydream) trigger: something that leads to a craving or compulsion to daydream. The most common trigger is music, followed by other forms of media such as TV, video games and books.
daydream universe/daydreamverse/dreamverse: the imaginary world or worlds where daydreams are set. see also: paracosm
fantasy/fantasising: see daydreaming.
Fantasy Prone Personality (FPP): a personality trait that means someone has a strong, lifelong involvement in fantasy and imagination. Signs of FPP include delusions and hallucinations (such as having intense spiritual/paranormal experiences, experiencing imagined sensations as real and confusing daydreams with real memories) as well as spending over half your waking time daydreaming. Maladaptive Daydreaming is more likely to affect those with Fantasy Prone Personality, however being a maladaptive daydreamer doesn’t necessarily mean you have FPP. Check the Wikipedia article for more information.
imaginary friend: an imaginary person that someone pretends to interact with in the real world, for the sake of companionship, entertainment or (for children) play. Not the same thing as a character or para. Maladaptive daydreamers interact with their characters/paras in their daydreams, whereas imaginary friends are imagined as existing in the real world. Maladaptive daydreamers can also have their characters as imaginary friends, however. compare: character, para
inhabitant: a less common word for para. Short for daydream inhabitant. Coined by @avpdkaneki .
see also: character
linear universe: a daydream universe with only one world, which usually has one main storyline (i.e. one series of events which the maladaptive daydreamer daydreams about). Coined by @ni-ghtdreams . compare: multiple universes, non-linear daydreams
MaDD/MADD/madd - acronym, short for Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder.
Maladaptive Daydreaming (Disorder): a mental illness characterised by compulsive daydreaming that takes over a large part of someone’s life, to the extent that it interferes with or replaces things like work, school, real-life relationships, hobbies, getting up and going to sleep. When daydreaming, maladaptive daydreamers are content and also feel the emotions that their characters/paras are feeling. At the same time, daydreamers often engage in a repetitive activity (e.g. pacing or rocking back and forth). When not daydreaming, they experience regular cravings to resume their daydreams and often have trouble concentrating the world around them. It is debatable whether Maladaptive Daydreaming is a disorder, addiction or other type of mental illness. Currently, it is not officially psychologically recognised as a mental illness, therefore it is impossible to have it diagnosed by a therapist. The term was first coined by Eli Somer in 2002. see also: MaDD, MDD, MD, maladaptive daydreamer, Fantasy Prone Personality
(maladaptive) daydreamer: a person with Maladaptive Daydreaming.
MDD: mistakenly used as an acronym for Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder. In fact, MDD stands for Major Depressive Disorder and the community has asked that we stop using the tag. To avoid confusion, use the acronym MaDD. see also: MD, MaDD
MD: an acronym short for Maladaptive Daydreaming, proposed as an alternative to MDD. However there is still some confusion in that it could stand for Major Depression. It’s best to use the acronym MaDD. see also, MDD, MaDD
multiple universes: a daydream universe with more than one world or timeline which the maladaptive daydreamer fantasises about. Coined by @ni-ghtdreams . compare: linear universe, non-linear daydreams
neuronarrative: the intense, divergent imaginings of fantasy prone people. Neuronarrative refers to extensive daydreams that are often accompanied by a repetitive activity, although these daydreams/narratives are not necessarily maladaptive and do not necessarily make it difficult for someone to live their life. In other words, the term has no negative connotations. All maladaptive daydreamers are neuronarrators, but not all neuronarrators are maladaptive daydreamers. Coined by @autisticworlds . see also: neuronarrator, Fantasy Prone Personality, traveling
compare: Maladaptive Daydreaming
neuronarrator: a person who experiences neuronarrative. compare: maladaptive daydreamer
non-linear daydreams: daydreams that are not all based in one world or a series of worlds - daydreams that are more random in nature and don’t have much in common in terms of timeline and setting. Coined by @ni-ghtdreams . compare: linear universe, multiple universes
para: see character. Due to the level of emotional attachment and the amount of time spent interacting with them, some daydreamers feel that ‘characters’ isn’t a strong enough word to describe the people in their daydreams. Para is used as an alternative. It comes from the word paracosm and was coined by @schizotypaldaydreamer .
para-: a prefix that can presumably be used in front of anything to show that it is from your daydream universe, though it is almost always used for people. For example, a para/character who is your friend in your daydreams would be referred to as a ‘parafriend’. see also: para, character, daydream universe, paracosm
paracosm: an imaginary world. Typically a paracosm is quite developed and may have its own imagined geography, laws, people, places, customs, history, language, etc. A famous example of a paracosm is Middle Earth. You do not have to be a maladaptive daydreamer to have a paracosm. Check the Wikipedia article for more information.
parame: see daydream self. Short for ‘parallel me’ and also coined by @schizotypaldaydreamer . see also: para-
thisverse: a word for reality/the real world, in comparison to a daydream universe or paracosm. Coined by @schizotypaldaydreamer .
traveling: a term created to be synonymous with Maladaptive Daydreaming but without the negative connotations, for those who don’t find their extensive imagining to be a problem. It has since been replaced by neuronarrative, which is not synonymous with Maladaptive Daydreaming. Coined by @autisticworlds .
Feel free to add any other terms that you think are relevant, as long as they’re being used by more than one person (otherwise it’s just individual preference).
I don’t know how mums do it. How they hurt in every place imaginable, how their worlds crash down on them daily, how they are fatigued with stress and worry and tension yet still manage to do so much. How they never complain and never ask for anyone to sacrifice anything for them, but are able to sacrifice themselves in so many ways for the sake of their families. For the sake of their husband and children and parents. How even when their bodies aren’t fully functioning, or are weak from illness.. they still force themselves to get up, to do household work.. cooking and cleaning.. and making sure everyone elses day runs smoothly.. without complaint
Mothers are the biggest blessing in the whole world, the biggest blessing from Allah.
May Allah grant All mothers or mother figures the highest of Jannahs, and may we all reunite with them there.
Okay so even if you don’t ship it, what I am about to say will be undeniably true.
First and foremost, katara treats everyone, EVERYONE in the group like a child that she mothers EXCEPT for Zuko.
When they were on ember island at the play, the phrase ‘avatar’s girl’ is spoken on stage and Aang nods proudly like he owns Katara, it’s possessive. When Katara tells him she needs time to think, because she doesn’t know what she wants, instead of respecting her wishes Aang kisses her out of no where because he thinks it’s his rite.
When Katara and Zuko go to see the southern raiders, he watches her blood bend a man without batting an eye. He doesn’t judge her when she can’t kill the murderer either, and after on the dock she basically ignores Aang and jumps into Zuko’s arms for a real affectionate hug.
When she hugs Aang it’s always rather hesitantly as if she is hugging a close friend, not a lover. When he goes into the avatar state after aapa is stolen, she hugs him because he needed it.
Her and Zuko have a hateful relationship up until the point of the cave in ba sing se, where she finally realizes he is hurting just as much as she is. She is even allowed to touch his scar which no one has done so far in the series. Even as she leaves with Aang, her eyes travel back to Zuko. Her heart breaks when she sees him fighting along side Azula, and that is why she is so guarded when he finally makes the right desicion and tries to join up. She doesn’t want to be hurt again because she has genuine affection for him.
When she meets Aang in the iceberg, he is just a goofy kid who likes to laugh. Once she realizes he is the avatar things change and the friendship begins. They travel the world together and become life long friends, but no where in any of the episodes does it show true attraction. Even in the cave of two lovers it was just coincidence that they got stick together, and even then Katara is only blushing awkwardly because it’s a first kiss, plus she only offered as an escape from the cave. When they first kiss on the invasion day it was almost an instinctual reaction. Aang didn’t know if he was going to die, and katara didn’t know if she’s ever see him again so they shared a special moment ‘just in case’ but that was it.
This show is all about balance, ying and yang, tui and la, light and dark, fire and water. Everything leading up to the final agni kai was all supposed to end differently. How Zuko attacked katara village and her multiple times. How he saved Aang as the blue spirit and freed aapa. How he betrayed her again at ba sing se and almost killed Aang, only to save them all from combustion man 'who he hired.’ How he helped her grieve her mother’s death in a way that no one else in the group could. Finally when he is beating Azula and sees blue sparks head towards katara, all that he has worked for, his honor, his throne, his nation, his life. He was willing to give all that up as he dove in front of the lightning. Yes he was trying to redirect it, but being in the air he was not grounded, and could have easily died. And in the end when he finally sees her face all he can say is 'thank you’ because for a moment he hasn’t decided if he is dead or not and if he is he is grateful that the first face he sees is her. And she should have pulled him into a hug before kissing him, and then she would fumble around awkwardly until she felt him brush her cheek, and pull her in for a slow warm kiss. They would have achieved balance, yin and yang, anger and kindness, introvert and extrovert, guarded and stoic vs open and cheerful, light and dark, fire and water.
To her Aang will always be that goofy kid in the iceberg, and maybe she does love him but it would be a fist love. The kind you get when you are 14 and meet a strange boy who isn’t from the tribe you have lived in your whole life and offers to take you away from your home to see the world. A love that never had any conflict, no hate and arguments or bad thoughts, the love of a perfect friend.
Then you have the love that has grown and molded and been shaped by both of your hand as both you and he seek redemption. Zuko was the enemy and everything she hated about the fire nation. In her eyes he was the reason her mother had to die, for people like him and then he redeems himself and she starts to feel her heart pulled to him by some unknown force, until she is touching his face in an affectionate way. And then all at once the tug is broken by and flash of lightning and she has to save the day, but as she flew away the tug may be gone but she can still feel the sensation in your heart. She hates him so much it feels like she could fire bend herself and then he’s there. All at once as he was standing before her she felt the tug again and quickly had to cut it herself, refusing to believe that he had changed. And then he gave her peace and all at once she stopped fighting it and let the tug pull her straight into his arms on the dock. And as she say him dive in front of lightning for her her heart stopped and didn’t beat until he was thanking her, and she pulled him into a kiss and the world finally found balance in 100 years.
Even going past the last air bender to legend of korra, we see that Aang favors his only air bending son Tenzin for his own selfish reasons, and when Zuko in all of his flaws and short comings hears that Izumi may be in trouble his first and only thought is to be by his daughters side to protect her. Loyalty vs selfish gains. You can argue that Aang would be excited to finally be the person who restarts the air benders so to speak, but at the sake of making your other children feel neglected just doesn’t seem like a fair trade.
Even if you don’t ship it, the show was originally supposed to end in zutara, and literally the ONLY reason they changed it, was because the “hero” should get the girl. They missed out on such a great opportunity to make it something completely different than any other story, and place the two that actually ment something together. But instead they gave Aang his 'prize’ which again, possessive.
It’s Pidge in the healing pod this time. Shiro is livid. Lance sits, and takes his reprimand with his back straight. As if he would be a little stronger. His hands twitch and clench, fingers folding and twisting in his lap. It was his fault, and Shiro lets him know it. He’s never seen the man so angry, and it scares him.
They’d all been hurt before, sure. But this time- Lance looks up from the floor, to where Pidge is asleep in the healing pod. Lance was supposed to be there. He should have had Pidge’s back. Shield down, gun up, he’d taken out the attacker. But not before a knife had been lodged between two of Pidge’s ribs. Not far from vital organs, Coran had told them.
Lance’s hands shook, his face hurt from the effort to keep himself on lockdown. But his lips still trembled, eyebrows still drawn together, distraught. Pidge was so young. Out of all of them, she deserved this the least. And Lance hadn’t been there when she needed him to be.
“Are you even listening?” With a jolt, Lance realized he’d stopped listening to Shiro’s tirade.
“Lance, you need to take this more seriously!” Shiro continued, despite Lance’s particularly cowed demeanor, “We can’t afford-”
“Will you lay off!?” Keith cut Shiro off from across the room, “for fucks sake, Shiro, we aren’t children! We know when we fucked up. All you have to do is say so and move on. You don’t have to berate anyone for it.” Lance watches Keith cross the room with wide, watery eyes. Keith’s steps are purposeful and carry him swiftly to where Lance sits.
“And did you ever think, for one moment,” Keith spits over his shoulder, “That none of this would have happened if you’d sent more people, like Lance said in the first place?” With that, the red paladin snatches up one of Lance’s shaking hands, hauls him to his feet, and all but drags the boy out of the room.
They take off running, because Keith doesn’t want to keep Lance anywhere near any further confrontation. They come to a stop, hidden far within the winding halls of the castle. Chests heaving for breath, they fall against the wall, and Keith sits when Lance slides down it. He let’s Lance lean into him as he cries. Puts an arm around him and holds him, and doesn’t care about the growing wet spot on his shirt. He just wants Lance to feel better.
So I was thinking about this whole aliens thing, and i remembered a post about aliens not being able to throw, and are very surprised at how a human could throw a wad paper into the trash can. I’m sorry its not linked, I couldn’t find it.
Anyways. I was thinking, maybe aliens cant aim? Just like, everything they do is in close contact, fighting, playing sports, exercising, whatever aliens do. Whenever they fight, the aliens with canons that actually hit their opponents are thought to be some amazing super race.
And then, humans come in. These bags of flesh who dont seem to be able to survive the conditions of their homeland. And then one casually throws a wad of paper into a bin a good 30 feet away. Of course, the aliens thought it was luck, that the humans hand just spasmed, and everyone was fine with that explanation.
Until humans joined into some war. Suddenly, no one was safe. Humans can be immense distances from their target and still hit. Ships with canons aren’t viewed as a bounty that no one else has, rather, a ship without one is useless; a resort ship.
Humans bring sports that involve aim, like basketball, football, soccer, badminton, tennis, practically everything! Archery and shooting ranges are fun spots to test your accuracy, available to the country! Even the games their children play, throwing water ballons, frisbees, the carnival games for gods sake!
And this is what causes the fear for aliens when they are in an area humans may are, or have, been. Humans can kill them out of their eyesight, untraceable.
Aim, such a small thing, aim, caused aliens to want humans when fighiting, would do anything for them, the humans becoming tyrants, the universe their tyranny, without even knowing, as humans are completely oblivious to everything.
I kept wondering why I immensely dislike the ‘how dare Padme be written as losing the will to live!!!’ posts that unfortunately swarm this place, for reasons other than the fact that I adore tragedies and Tumblr seems to have an allergy toward them.
And then it clicked, when I saw post #5491 along the lines of ‘she had two beautiful babies.’ That’s what drives me up the wall – the idea that women and female characters by extension must have some sort of overriding moral imperative to live for the sake of their children, otherwise they’re not worthwhile as characters or ‘written well.’ I grew up in a conservative Christian society and people’s idea of helping me get through suicidal ideation was ‘think of the babies you’ll have and how happy they’ll make you when you learn to live for them!’ No wonder Tumblr and its screechy hatred for Padme’s death makes my hair stand on end, when it’s turned into ‘but what about the baybeeeez!’ nonsense.
Unpopular opinion: I think that, to Padme, her husband and the Republic carried more value. I’m not saying that she didn’t love her children – no, she loved them fiercely, enough to fight the odds, cling to life a little bit more and name them. But this love was likely not enough to offset the blows and the grievous harm caused by the loss of both Anakin and the Republic. Add in the very real possibility of Sidious meddling and you end up with a foregone conclusion. But that would entail her being a complex, flawed and perhaps somewhat selfish person (gasp!), when it came to the things close to her heart, instead of a wholly pure, angelic figure who was supposed to live for the sake of her children, like every Virtuous Mother should. Supposedly progressive people coming at something from the same angle as religious conservatives is the thing guaranteed to always make me angry.
There’s also this obsession on here to claim that Padme was supposed to be some sort of Leia 2.0 were it not for ‘that dastardly Lucas.’ And my God, does that shit ever irk me – it reduces the category ‘female heroines’, which is supposed to be incredibly broad and diverse, to a narrow archetype: they’re supposed to be fiery, snappy, with a spine made of titanium and they’re not supposed to ever fall apart or give up, ever, otherwise they’re badly-written characters.
Wow what a shit year! Not for anime, I mean, it was okay at
worst. I think we’re definitely at the upward slope of the anime renaissance
now, but still at the very start of it. It’s hard to think about that when most
of what comes out (and is somehow popular) is just…the most generic shit. Well,
I did the work for you. I weeded and trudged through some of the worst anime
around and even some of my shit favorites to bring you the actual good, worth
watching anime of the year.
Yeah, not everything you saw or want to see on this list is
here, but you can check my foreword from last week that explains all that
garbage. Links to each anime’s respective review will be on the titles (and
added for those that just finished). Know that this list is pretty fluid. From 8
or 7 up, it’s all very much I loved them, but the higher up, the more I recommend
anyone watch them.
Madoka was cool. I finally watched it this year and I was
just as blown away by the psychological aspects as I expected to be. It just
lacked that extra bite it needed to really scare my pants off. MGRP however,
did indeed take a few years off of my life. I’m really in ruins right now since
I can grab you by the shoulders and tell you now: you’ll like a lot of these
characters and their thought out designs and personalities, but don’t get
attached, cus ALMOST ALL OF THEM DIE.
I have to put MGRP on this list because aside from its fun
and original designs, awesome interactions, cool-ass premise and execution
(sometimes literally), it had some amazing rewatch value. I watched this anime
three times, which is a lot to do in one year. I just had to watch people’s reactions
and seeing stuff hidden in the background and revisiting some foreshadowing was
so much fun. Definitely worth a watch and I’ll cover more about it in my
Regrets, like I have over not putting Kekkai Sensen into
last year’s list, are the main theme of Orange. Buried under the shoujo themes
of romance, high school, and angst, lies the actual regret: letting a friend
kill himself. The main story unfolds itself very slowly as the group of friends
discover that is what they must prevent, but it’s done in a realistic way. The
signs of depression and suicide are so jokingly cast aside; it’s no wonder
people miss it before it’s too late.
The climax of this story was heart-pounding and
gut-wrenching. You find yourself rooting so hard for there to be success, to
save someone who may not want to be saved, but must be saved. It might also
make you pay closer attention to those around you. It’s an important anime to
watch. If you do want one with a little less romantic emphasis though, I recommend
you see Colorful instead (or also!).
I need to marry someone who can cook. It doesn’t have to be
a five-star chef, though I wouldn’t complain if it were the case, but Sweetness
and Lightning reignited my need to be fed well. The show is about how food
brings family and friends together. Aside from the great character
interactions, well written children characters, and for god’s sake, the
beautiful, perfect looking food, this anime was so pure in the amount of love
put into it.
The food tops even some shown in Shokugaki no Soma, purely
cus it’s doable for someone with a low skill level (like me), the meals are
made for picky eaters (like me), and there’s not a ridiculously emphasis put on
the orgasmic nature of food. That’s a thing that Shokugeki no Soma and even
Koufuku Graffiti used stylistically in a comedic manner, but it doesn’t fit in
Sweetness and Lightning for good reason. This show is accessible in that way,
making it easier to show to someone who might want to try anime, but doesn’t
want all the sexy fanservice.
Kick-ass and Metal come to mind when
Drifters is mentioned. I love Kohta Hirano’s previous work, Hellsing, a lot. It
was a massive gore and blood fest with a sprinkling of comedy in the mix. This
is a war and gore fest with a, not a sprinkling of comedy, but more like Hirano
accidentally knocked the bottle of comedy over when he was checking on the oven
directly into said mix. It’s really funny, but also really awesome. I have a
lot to say about it in my review, but I think a dog fight with dragons involved
kind of state my case for me. Also Elves, Dwarves and other Tolkien demihumans
and monsters abound. It’s fun.
The animation is also gorgeous,
especially that stylized, graphic novel looking opening theme with the rock
anthem “Gospel of the Throttle” making you “NA NA NA NA NA NA” along with the
characters every opening. It’s an excellent show to watch with friends or get
yourself pumped. Returning sometime next year!
How can something be so trope-y, yet so damn enjoyable?
Kuromukuro isn’t an original concept, but is done in an original way. The
samurai trapped in a machine for 500 years is the new exchange student. The
reluctant heroine needs to board the mecha to fight the alien threat. The
school festival has been compromised by an alien mecha entering the atmosphere.
This anime is funny, but it’s also emotional and holds a much wider scope than
I ever could have expected. P.A. Works has been putting out some good
contenders in the last few years, and with their lovely art style and
well-balanced budget, they were able to pull off this massive mech story in an
engaging and entertaining way.
I applaud the cast for one of the best ensembles on this
list, bringing forth some of the best and most memorable character chemistry of
the season, and some hilarious situational humor. I also cried a little near
the end, but honestly, a lot of anime on this list did that to me this year.
Shonen anime is such a delight now,
always a favorite of mine as a kid, but not as firmly as now. I love the
underdogs; I love the over the top villains; I love the powers, the fights, and
the yelling to infinity. It’s just so exciting and blood pumping, and MHA made
it so refreshing with such an interesting spin. These characters are children,
inexperienced, with quirks that may or may not be useful. I love Deku because
his anxieties and general feelings of being less than everyone else not only
make it exciting to see him overcome them, but to use them to keep his head and
ego from getting over inflated like some shonen protagonists. Bakugo is such a
good foil to him, showing where this could be a major weakness to a shonen
Also it’s coming back with THE
TOURNAMENT ARC, and if you’re like me and haven’t started the manga yet, DO IT!
You won’t regret it! I’m more than excited to see more of this awesome anime in
This anime, wow this anime. I’m so upset not more people are
talking about it, but have you seen this delight for the senses? I’m looking
forward to reviewing it now just because my jaw is still kinda on the floor.
Beautiful animation, a crazy cool style, and some of the best nonsense in
magical-girl but not really fight scenes I’ve seen in a while. This anime
reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my thumb on it. I do know it’s
like an amalgamation of my editor’s anime “TYPE” so you’ll see more about that
in the review.
But good lord did I love the heart of this show. The pure
romance, the exciting battles, the trippy psychological horror. Let me just
say, that one episode (the Maria Watches Over Us “GOKIGENYO”), probably has
scarred me for life, but I love it. It’s just so different and good. It
deserves a watch, just for how delighted your eyes will be.
I love a story that can get you
emotionally invested and cheering for or yelling at the character who you don’t
have any control over. Erased was paced beautifully (though some might disagree
due to the slight differences in adaptation), and its animation only made every
silent, tender moment more enjoyable to look at before the lighting and mood
would change and the feeling of bloodlust would stain the air. That’s how you
I’m a little annoyed because
apparently some other people were reading some character motivations
“differently,” (looking at you crunchyroll), but I think it’s safe to say this
doesn’t cross the line into romance, at all, and stays a thriller about growing
up in a life-threatening situation.
I love the theatre, and I love comedy and storytelling. This
anime manages to hit both of these points while showcasing some of the best
animation I’ve ever seen. On top of the animation, there’s good directing, and
supporting that is a great soundtrack. The story is vast and covers several
characters’ lives over several decades surrounding World War 2.
The rakugo, though, is what makes the story. It’s not the
first anime to touch on this topic, but it’s the first to do so in such an
interesting way. It was very refreshing compared to a lot of titles on this
list (though many of them are refreshing ideas!) with its originality. It’s
heartfelt, it’s serious, it’s funny, but it also makes me want to cry. If it
weren’t for the top spot being so hype as hell and generally a weekly freak-out
among me and my friends, this would have been number one.
1. Mob Psycho 100
What can I say about Mob Psycho that hasn’t already been said? Its opening is
gold, its animation is unique and interesting, its writing, directing, and
characters are all praise-worthy. It is just hands down the best anime of the
year. You may be thinking, “but Mitsu, One Punch Man was number one LAST YEAR.
Isn’t Mob a little overhyped?”
No. Sit down and shut up. One is probably one of the best
writers on the scene right now and is doing a lot better at writing genuinely
empathetic characters and commentary on modern anime genres and tropes than
most of the big budget barf fests. I think the “overhyped” talk is nonsense
when it comes to mob. It genuinely does some interesting and groundbreaking
work. That’s why it’s not only on this list, but number one. It never moved an
inch since I decided it should be on the list.
Everything I’ve said has BEEN said by several really good
reviewers and critics out there and you should definitely check out what they
have to say about it too, because honestly, they’re a lot better than I am. I
like Mob Psycho, I like One Punch Man, but I like Mob more. I’m so delighted
that One Punch Man will be returning shortly and I only wish for Mob to also
share the spotlight, as it deserves.
This is not Episode 4 where we all are celebrating when Dany went in and fought the Lannister forces. It’s not there for a glorious battle sequence. Episode 6 is not about how Dany can save the day with her dragons. This is why the battle is not something to cheer for. The real suspense here is how the dragons are not really invincible; how easily they can die. How easily it is to die.
The point here is that one of Dany’s beloved children died for the sake of the lives of the people she barely even knew but she wished to protect. The point here is we finally see Dany not as a conqueror or a queen, but a person who lost something she cared about deeply, whom she has every reason to be selfish about, to be selfish for. The point is even though she has every reason to be selfish now, she wasn’t. She didn’t regret.
The point here, is really, this is the very core of her character. She didn’t save the day. She thrives to save.
And I’m done with people who keep belittling her for what she did here because of how powerful she is anyways. How she’s not really putting herself in danger because she has 3 freaking dragons. You know why people expect too much from her? Exactly because we view her as the only one capable, as the only one who has the power to flip the situation. But when she delivers, we just set aside what she did. The very same thing that led us to put her on a pedestal is the very same thing that we use to tear down her heroism.
With many people expecting too much from her, no wonder she is actually insecure about her position. Jon said it best, she’s not deserving of a Queen because of her power or anything, but because of who she really is. It was the best compliment you can give to a Daenerys Targaryen. It’s just of who she really is.
while i dont think joseph and mary should have stayed together (primarily because joseph is written to be a serial cheater and using the fact that mary wont or even cant properly stand up for herself to him and also mary clearly having gotten over the idea of having children, assuming she wanted any in the first place. i personally feel like joseph was lying to you when he said ‘heeeyy me and mary are through lets fuck’ because he didn’t even hesitate or even take time to let himself recuperate), theyre most definitely staying together for the sake of the children. a divorce can really hit one kid hard, let alone four.
now had joseph and mary really decided to stay apart for a while and joseph stay on his yacht, if mary were really abusing her children do you really really really think joseph would have left them all in mary’s care? why wouldn’t he insist she go stay at a hotel or with her parents or take them to his yacht himself? why would he leave the ‘abusive mother’ in charge of four children?
probably because, again, we were manipulated in game and out of game to believe that mary was a bad parent and wife. just because she chooses not to go find crish at the bbq really doesnt mean anything. she had 3 kids prior and i feel like she would know what shes doing by now in terms of having a toddler. everyone wants to accuse her of being a bad mother for not finding her toddler when its actually extremely normal for parents with 3 children to be aware of what the youngest will end up doing because having kids is a learning experience.
now is that a correct attitude to have? not necessarily but mary seems to know her children fairly well. she knows what the twins can and cant handle (ie; she knows they love horror movies, it’s not common but there are quite a few children who find a keen adoration for horror flicks at a young age), she knows that chris isn’t very outspoken (because he’s autistic), and she knows crish can survive for more than 5 minutes without getting into serious trouble (bcause she’s had to deal with 3 other toddlers).
the only times we really see joseph with any of the kids is with christie and they’re being happy and close. chris we can’t really gauge his opinion of either of his parents, and christian just bails at any chance he can get. christie seems to love her father, most likely her mother too. the kids arent aware they have marital issues because joseph and mary keep that private. they don’t want the kids to worry about their relationship.
mary doesn’t cheat, she just flirts because she likes seeing younger men uncomfortable. it’s funny to her and when a guy seems to want to take her up on her offer, she’s fully aware that he’ll back out when she starts getting weird about it which is why she says “don’t make checks your dick cant cash” she knows hes bluffing because its mary, she’s smarter than we’re led to believe.
joseph on the other hand, we are fully aware of two accounts that he cheated. robert and mc. had it been one time, i feel like mary wouldn’t hold much malice, especially considering she becomes close with robert. but somewhere in the middle of joseph sleeping with robert and mc moving to maplebay, joseph does it a second time, possibly a third if the timeframe allows it. now i feel like joseph started pursuing a sexual relationship with robert after roberts wife died and his daughter left because he knew robert was emotionally compromised but i covered that in a different post. but joseph knowing to go for someone emotionally compromised leads me to believe robert wasnt his first offense.
mary easily becomes friends with robert and i wouldn’t doubt it if she becomes friends easier with people she can bitch about joseph with. so quite possibly, joseph slept with several people that mary is now friends with (maybe not damien, that’d be a stretch. possibly neil, though. robert and mary seem to adore neil). that’s probably why mary is so upset with him. joseph thinks his cheating his completely to himself and the people he slept with when mary is waiting for him to admit it because every person he’s slept with has come to her and told her about it with the same story of “he took me to his yacht, told me you two were through, and then fucked me.” this feels slightly more reinforced to me since if i remember correctly, when examining the bedroom of the yacht, mc mentions how the decor is older in style.
mary should most certainly stand up for herself and call joseph out on her bullshit, just letting it happen isn’t healthy for herself or her family especially since joseph is part of the cause for her drinking problem at this point. but she cant, she wants to be able to wait for her kids to be old enough to understand their reasoning. joseph knows from the outside it looks like they have marital problems so he uses it to his advantage which only causes more and more problems. when it comes to joseph? mary is a pushover because she loves him but she’s so tired of all the lies. there is no doubt in my mind that joseph loves mary too, but the way he’s using her as a ploy to get laid is absolutely inexcusable.
its deeper than just “THEY HAVE ISSUES THEY NEED TO BREAK UP RIGHT NOW (and joseph needs to date my dadsona *heavy breathing*)” because when you take into consideration how they interact with the kids, how much each of them are fucking up, how old the kids are, how much time and money and custody issues it would take especially since at least one of them are most definitely in school and probably already has issues in his classes; a divorce isn’t doable. i get it, everyone only wants the best for these fictional characters, but not every abusive relationship is just like “let me snap my fingers and just leave haha! it couldn’t negatively effect anyone!”
i get how this can seem like im in favor of one character or the other, but i actually genuinely love both mary and joseph very much. they’re two of my favorite characters in the whole game and i’m only doing what i can to understand their situation.
