for really cool insights like this

films to watch

so i saw a post listing films in foreign languages and i thought i could expand on the list a little bit but my addition got so massive i decided to move it to a separate post. this list will focus on my target languages and feature a little bit of french as well just to spice it up.

films are good for several reasons

  • usually quite fun
  • actually challenging if u watch w/o subtitles and the easiest way to achieve immersion in the privacy of your home
  • “productive procrastination”
  • might give u cultural insight as well
  • or encourage you to learn some history!!!!
  • i’m really tired of people watching almodóvar and being like uuuuuuhuuuu look the great spanish director and forgetting that not only are there spanish films not directed by almodóvar but also that spanish is spoken in other countries as well and GUESS WHAT they produce culture

ok here we go!!!!! im really lazy and my computer is agonizingly slow so i can provide no links. if something interests you search for it et voila

WARNING!!!!! long post

  • magia salvaje - this is an uber cool colombian film showing largely unexplored areas of colombia which i think is the most beautiful country on earth. it was recommended to me independently by a friend from my spanish class and my colombian pen pal gal. from its website: “magia salvaje es la cinta del mundo natural más ambiciosa realizada en el país (…) [realizada en] 85 locaciones y 20 ecosistemas. (…) un tributo a la belleza de colombia“ tl;dr: cool shit u should watch, it’s available on yt
  • señor ávila - a p good series filmed by the mexican hbo starring tony dalton as an exemplary father and husband that starts working as a paid killer for the mafia, but it’s not all peachy because it affects his personal life and his son gets into some really deep shit. gets a bit grim at times but good nevertheless
  • retrato de un comportamiento animal - really cute indie film made in uruguay. an unlikely couple on a trip to brazil. expect nice landscapes and voseo

  • saneamento básico - p straightforward but fun brazilian comedy in which a small town community will do anything to raise money to fix their sewer system

  • la religieuse (2013) - a really stuningly made adaptation of denis diderot’s novel about a girl thrown into a convent against her will and desperate to get out who discovers some dark family secrets.
  • tom à la ferme - weird indie canadian film with xavier dolan, a gay man travelling to meet his dead boyfriend’s family and terrorised by said’s boyfriend’s horrible brother. more dark family shit for u

i love the hieroglyphs in bomb disposal because it really shows the difference between dan and phil's thinking processes

i know it’s so funny and also cool to see how dan and phil process everything.. like phil is such a lateral thinker so he sees them as objects and dan often sees things as letter and numbers more than anything else. i love small insights into their minds it is interessante

anonymous asked:

why do you hate hide so much?? i know his fans can be annoying but hide really didnt do anything wrong

Now, look here. I think people are getting me wrong.

I love Hideyoshi Nagachika, Ishida Sui’s character who was a huge moral support to Kaneki for a huge portion of his life, is probably the one of the shadiest characters in the series with a extremely dubious concept of morality, who on his own was able to fool a ghoul and place a tracker on him, ‘fought’ a ghoul using ketchup and firecrackers that led a bunch of ghoul investigators to actually eliminate said ghoul why he quietly snuck off, infiltrated the CCG so that he can obtain information and maybe find his best friend and ends up becoming a huge reason why Kaneki regained his reason to live.

I hate the Hideyoshi Nagachika that was the fandom’s creation, who’s apparently the sole sunshine and cinnamon roll of this series, has done absolutely nothing wrong, will hurt nobody at all, who’s predicted to finally show up at some point in time and magically cure Kaneki’s depression and PTSD to return all happiness and sunshine to his life and whose biggest purpose right now is to come back like some prince on a white horse to rescue the damsel in distress Kaneki Ken from the raging and despicable demon otherwise known as Kirishima Touka.

I’ve been talking to a few mutuals recently about Hide and we think Hide’s character has been warped by a huge portion of his fandom already. So when on Tumblr, I don’t really talk much about him? But if I am honest, while Hide isn’t as high up on my faves list as he used to be, I still really like him. His story in the novel is one of my favorites ever because he’s so sneaky and cool and I generally love characters with intelligence and insight (which is why I was attracted to Hide in the first place). I talk a lot about him with my friends irl as well. Anon, I don’t hate Hide and I don’t hate Hidekane. Don’t get me wrong. :P

“Oh Deer”

+ nervous James with his cutie nervous ticks
+ and I mean ALL the nervous ticks
+ hair ruffling, biting his lip, being incredibly clumsy
+ like he’d constantly trip over desks and stuff
+ you know Sirius would make fun of him for it
+ but Sirius knows all about dude code so he’d never tell anyone
+ being in denial
+ “But why? Like, why?!?!?!”
+ Remus would be over it in like, two days
+ “Just TELL HER. It’s not like it’ll kill you.”
+ “But it will, Moony! I’ll die of awkwardness!”
+ overthinking things
+ “What if she doesn’t like my deer jokes? I can’t live without my deer jokes!”
+ so he decides to go undercover
+ and when I mean undercover I mean with all the cliche’s
+ he names it ‘Operation Smooth Deer’ and gets glasses and everything
+ Peter suggests that they set up cameras so that they can see how you react
+ Sirius and Remus end that real quick
+ because while James Potter is many things, he is not a stalker
+ he has emotional breakdowns frequently
+ but when he talks to you he’s smooth
+ after Lily he knows how to control himself
+ so he’ll be your friend but secretly freak whenever he’s alone
+ he’ll overanalyze every minute you two spend together
+ “Pads, I don’t think she liked that joke! Her laugh sounded fake!”
+ then it occurs to him that Sirius, Remus, and Peter know nothing of love
+ so he gets some female insight
+ you know I mean Lily Evans
+ so they’ll hang out and plot
+ and you might have suspicions that they are getting together
+ and you might ask James about them
+ and he totally plays it cool
+ or so he thinks
+ James thinks he’s really smooth but he’s really just a dork
+ so you kind of know that he has a crush but you don’t tell him
+ but he thinks you don’t know
+ and when he finally does tell you it’s totally adorable
+ it’s probably after a Quidditch Match
+ he just got changed and you guys are making your way to the afterparty
+ and you just told him he did amazing
+ and he lets it slip that he thinks your amazing
+ and normally that would be fine but he tries to awkwardly cover it up
+ and he ends up saying something about kissing
+ and how you’d be an amazing kisser
+ and then it’s your turn to be all smooth
+ and you guys kiss
+ and then he turns into a deer out of excitement and slips on the floor

Can you tell me some about tarot cards? Im getting the golden thread deck next week. Im highly interested in it, but know very little.

Hello Dearie!

Is there anything in particular you want to know? I’ll put some general info down but you’re welcome to send me a message with further questions if I don’t answer them for you! I wasn’t sure if you were looking into the history of tarot cards or ‘ohmygodihavethisthingwhatdoidowiththething???” So I kinda answered both to the best of my ability.

History of Tarot (ish)

-Tarot goes back as far as the 15th century when it was just a card game. It wasn’t until the 18th  century that it started being used for divination (Wikipedia is my source because as much as I love you all, I’m too lazy to do real research)

-Traditional Decks: A good beginner deck is the Rider Waite Deck. It has the most ‘universal’ imagery that a lot of decks are based off of. A  traditional deck is made up of the Major and Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana has 22 cards starting with the Fool and ending with the World. Major Arcana cards usually represent major life events or changes. The Minor Arcana is Made up of 4 Suits (Wands, Pentacles (sometimes called coins), Cups, Swords). Each Suit has ten numbered cards (Ace-Ten) and four Court or Face cards (Knight, Page, Queen, King), and usually has an element or area of your life related to it. Court cards can often represent an important person in your life.

-Non Traditional Decks: There are so many tarot decks out there, not all of them will follow the imagery or ideas of the Rider Waite deck. They’ll often come with a guidebook that helps you understand their imagery and whatnot.

“I have this Deck. What do I do with it?”

-Start by taking a deep breath and remembering that tarot is meant to be fun. Sure, we’ll get scary and deep and meaningful readings, but ultimately we’re here to have fun and bond with our decks. Tarot is meant to guide us, not be set in stone. They tell us what could/ will happen if we stay on the current path we’re on.

-Get to know your deck and bond with it. Each deck has a different personality.  There are several ‘deck interview’ spreads you can do. I personally like this one and this one. Doing some sort of interview will help you learn the limits and strengths of your deck. You can also pull a card a day, spend time really analyzing it, the imagery, the meaning, what it makes you think of or feel. Bond with your deck by shuffling it absentmindedly while watching TV or listening to music. Sleep with it under your pillow, or take it in your bag when you run errands. Let it get to know you and your energy.

-Find your reading style: How do you shuffle? For how long while asking your question? Do you cut the deck or pull the cards straight from the top? Each deck has its own preference so make sure you take that in mind as well, but do what feels most comfortable for you

Okay, now you’re ready for a reading.

-Start by picking a question. Open ended is usually best. Shuffle the cards while thinking of your question. When you’re ready, pull as many cards as you need (this can be for a specific spread or just pulling a certain number of cards. I usually do 3 or 5).

-Decide if you’re reading reversals or not (I’ll get to that soon). take a look at each of the cards individually, think about what they mean to you. Take into consideration how they interact. Each card has its own meanings, but combined with the cards next to it can be even more important. Try to look at the bigger picture as well as the details

-Don’t be afraid to be critical. There are times, rare times, where the cards just don’t work. None of the cards make sense together or in your life. Sometimes this is because what they’re talking about hasn’t happened yet, but sometimes you just have a bad spread, it happens. Shake it off and reshuffle if that’s the case.

Tips, Tricks, Random things

-Reversals: Reversals are when you draw the card and its upside down. There are lots of ways to interpret reversals. Some read them as the opposite of the original meaning of the card, some read them as the person is experiencing a block in the area of their life the card appeals to. Others see it as excess. Some people don’t read reversals at all. This can be a personal preference or have something to do with the deck. My oracle deck doesn’t like reversed readings, so if a card in that deck is drawn upside down I just flip it right. With my shadowscapes deck I try to look at it intuitively before deciding if the reversal means anything at all.

-Jumper Cards: These are cards that literally jump or fall out of your deck as you’re shuffling. Some believe that these cards really need to be paid attention to. Sometimes you just did a really poor job shuffling. Just like with reversals, its up to you to decide what to do with them. I tend to put it aside and see how it fits with the rest of the spread before deciding if its important or not.

-Stalker cards: that one card you pull every time. Every. Time. For a while I was pulling the Emperor in every single spread I was doing for others. Ugh, it was torture. Stalker Cards will appear over and over until you get the meaning its trying to present to you. They’re important and should be paid attention to. @oceanwildatelier has this really cool idea of going through your deck each day, finding the card, and looking at the card on either side of it to get some deeper insight into what its trying to tell you.

-Spreads: you can use them if you want, but you don’t have to. There are several 3 card varieties, and tumblr is a great place to find all kinds of spreads for every situation. I like to use them sometimes, but most often I just pull three or five cards depending on how in depth of a message I want.

-Yes/No Questions: some people can do yes/no with tarot. I personally find it very difficult because my cards don’t give me consistent answers this way. The Easiest way to do yes/no with tarot is to ask your question and flip over the card. If its right side up, it’s a yes. If its reversed, its a no. You can also do this with three cards, two up or all up means yes, two down or all down means no.

-don’t be afraid to joke around with your deck. I call my cards sassy all the time because they are. I’ve spent several minutes shuffling and redrawing spreads because I didn’t want to hear what the cards had to say, just to get the same cards over and over. I called them sassy and rude each time. Like I said at the beginning of this post: the cards are meant to be fun, don’t get too stuck up in the process, find what works for you and only use them if its enjoyable for you.

Remember that tarot is meant to be fun, but it can hold a lot of meaning if you let it. If you pull a spread warning you of something big and scary to come, listen. Don’t let the fear consume you, but be alert. There is power in these little bits of card stock and ink, as weird as that is sometimes.

ummm… I don’t know if I have anything more to say for now… peeps feel free to add to this, or send me questions if there’s something more specific you wanna know about!

Some Advice for Incoming (or Current) Film Majors
  • Don’t feel guilty if you haven’t seen a lot of the movies you’re going to watch in your classes (especially if you’re from a household that was pretty strict)
  • Explore movies from a variety of genres, even ones that you may not like (i.e. if you’re not a huge fantasy fan, perhaps check out a few but look at it from a filmmaker’s standpoint)
  • That being said, if you still genuinely dislike a certain genre after checking out some movies from that genre, don’t force yourself to like it (you tried, therefore do not feel bad)
  • Don’t dislike a popular movie for the sake of disliking it.  If you genuinely dislike the movie, then that’s perfectly fine, but if you’re disliking a popular movie to seem “cool” or “edgy”, don’t
  • Try your best to watch the movies that your class assigns (it’s for the best-really)
  • Check out movies from a different country-watching a film from a different country tells you some interesting insight on that country or about the time period that film came out from said country.  Not to mention, some countries practice certain techniques that may be different from your home country, so it’s always nice to watch a new take on how to make movies.
  • If you feel like your passion’s waning, always re-watch your favorite movies/the movies that made you go “I know what I want to do in my life”
  • Check to see if there are any film clubs/organizations on campus that you can join-it’s always nice to connect with people
  • I say this with so much love: start on your short films/screenplays early (your sleep schedule/sanity will thank you)
  • And most importantly:

1d and their solo music: it’s not gonna happen

let me clarify:

niall keeps saying he’s finished, only to say he’s not finished, almost as if he’s forgotten the status of his supposed album. Which is weird because it’s literally his /first/ album. he did a complete promo tour for one song, including the jingle bell ball and i know only a few people talked about how suspicious it was, but seriously. it really was. one song, a complete promo tour, and a “oh yeah! the album’s coming haha” like that’s overkill even for a member of one direction (one that’s not harry, which the press would go nuts for)

liam made the first move in This Is Real, This Is Me fashion; kept it simple, to the point and diplomatic on twitter, nodded his hat to 1D, was acknowledged by his label, released a snippet of music.. and then.. nothing. and this all happened within months of each other. and then nothing. you say “oh he’s working on his album!” okay but why make moves when you don’t even have an album to promote? based on everything he’s posted, what he has are scraps of an album. so why make moves? he’s done intermittent promo, which is good, but the audience he’s going for doesn’t care about “ask liam”’s or whatever. it’s like for all this R&B, Next JT hype, that’s so… opposite of what he should be going for. and IG pics/updates are nice, but people outside of these circles don’t even know you??

harry is gonna be in a movie which apparently isn’t enough for people because they’re still waiting on and expecting him to not just put out an album, but debut it at the grammys. which is preposterous, especially with dunkirk promo coming up. so what, he’s gonna drop an album, and miss dunkirk promo to promo his album? which would be stupid because dunkirk is a big deal. or is he gonna do both and then hijack dunkirk promo and put the spotlight solely on himself and his movie/album? which would be equally as stupid and selfish but considering his image right now (which i do not believe to be truly reflective of him) it could work. or is he gonna do both promos separately and burn himself out to the core? like the whole purpose of the hiatus (which, lol) was to relax and take it easy because of being worked to hard like it’s logistically improbably for him to do that in a way that actually makes sense and looks good like..

and then louis is apparently collaborating with every person he breathes next to; going wherever his flittering interests tell him to… which i find that hard to believe… because if you actually listen to him speak he’s got a lot of musical insights and thoughts on creative process and he seems to really know which atmosphere he wants and who he wants to develop that atmosphere with (like steve) and since jho he’s probably done a lot more in depth planning for what he wants but as of right now! he’s just flyin by the seat of his pants! just bein a Cool Dad gettin into EDM, oh wait no maybe i’ll make music with james arthur, or no, maybe dua lipa. and it’s like “well, he’s just getting started he doesn’t know what he wants! :)” but um? for all the shadiness This Town/Liam’s music/Niall/Liam are presented as having a vision whereas looking at louis it’s like he has no direction (no pun intended) like

i just don’t see solo albums in any of their futures. especially right now under these circumstances. like make things make sense and then we’ll talk but this is.. so.. improbable and messy and they’re all intelligent, wise, savvy boys i don’t think it would like this if this is what’s actually going on

tl;dr: i don’t think one direction is putting out solo music because everything is shady

TenAsia K.A.R.D Interview (1) K.A.R.D’s charm?”Singing·Dancing·Members a triple threat”

“The secret weapon KARD is us.”

KARD has confidence. Their debut project single rose to US’ Main iTunes Chart and was recognized by Billboard. Recently in Korea’s music scene, the worries of a co-ed group debut’s which is rare have been washed away.

The base of KARD’s confidence is their unique presence from the start.

10: KARD, just like the team’s unique name, the member’s positions are also special.

BM: I’m BM the KARD’s, King. In-charge of the team’s dance and rap. I was born in LA and came here to participate in Korea’s SBS KPOP Star 5 years ago. Even though I was out of the program, now I’ve formed a relationship with my agency and even debuted.

J.Seph: (I’m) In-charge of being Ace. I was born and raised in Chungcheong-do. I moved to Seoul when I was 20. For the past 5 years, I’ve been dreaming and doing well. (Laughs)

Jeon Somin: (I’m) In-charge of being the Black Joker). In 2015 I debuted under the same company’s girl group, April. With that being said, I am not KARD’s leader. The four of us are helping each other while having the same roles as leaders.

Jeon Jiwoo: I’m Colour Joker Jiwoo. By singing, rapping, and dancing I play the role of adding more color to the group.

10. The male members wrote their stage names.

BM: BM is short for ‘Big Matthew’. Originally my name was Matthew but because I was tall I was called Big Matthew. But then for some reason, ‘Big Matthew’ sounds like a hamburger’s name… (all laughs)

J.Seph: My real name is Kim Taehyung. Also, I was registered as Kim Jin-Woong in the family registrar. Perhaps because of the meaning that my name was changed to Taehyung.

10: Jeon Somin you were the former member of APRIL. April’s was a girl group that had a concept of innocence.

Jeon Somin: When I came to KARD, seeing that the concept was different had me thinking that I won’t be able to bury it well, and was worried too. Fortunately, the older brothers and Jiwoo gave me lots of help and I was able to learn and adapt well.

10. Even before your official debut, the reaction is hot.

BM: It’s fascinating that many people are giving their attention to us. Especially the overseas fans, the love us a lot.

Jeon Jiwoo: I would be nice if we had more opportunities to meet the fans directly.

Last month’s second project single “Do not Recall” was on the iTunes main Song Chart. The first single, “Oh Na Na”, also saved a spot in the Worldwide iTunes charts. In addition, the US Billboard cited the card as ‘2017 Notable K-Pop Artist’.

Jeon Jiwoo: The fact that it was on the Main iTunes Chart, I couldn’t believe it.

Jeon Somin: We screamed “it’s the jackpot!!” amongst ourselves. (laughs)

Jeon Jiwoo: My brother is studying abroad but suddenly at dawn he sends me a picture. It was a screenshot of the iTunes Main Chart. My brother was like, “No way, I just saw KARD”. Our names being the same ranking as Rihanna and Adele, it was such a shock

10. It’s amazing that you’ve raised your name on Billboard and iTunes’ chart a record set before your official debut. In the future is there any record you’d like to see in the future?

J.Seph: Going up in the domestic music chart.

10: Is this the simple dream of a group that was on the World Chart? (Laughs)

J.Seph: I want to be loved in Korea as well as overseas.

10: Recently on Arirang TV “After School Club” you appeared. It was a first broadcast appearance.

J.Seph: The atmosphere wasn’t stiff so it was fun broadcasting.

Jeon Jiwoo: The fans had to match our personality during a given time and they really matched very well. I was surprised.

Jeon Somin: We have yet to have any close conversations with our fans so the fact that they know us well is very fascinating.

10: Once you officially debut, is there a program you’d like to go on?

Jeon Somin: KBS2 ‘Yooheuiyeol Sketchbook’ Is the one where I want to go on the most.

J.Seph: MBC ‘Idol Star Championship is where I want to appear”. I liked soccer so I wanted to play futsal but it seems there isn’t anymore.

Jeon Somin: J.seph oppa is very active.

Jeon Jiwoo: I love MBC ‘Infinite Challenge’, I imagined that later on, we will be able to have a joint music project. I’m very excited. I really am a fan.

10: Right now instead of being on broadcast, via SNS you communicate with the fans actively. Was there any response from the fans that was memorable?

Jeon Jiwoo: Recently we had an event on Twitter where we would reply to their mentions. Starting from supporting messages to questions, many mentions were sent. Even a question of who is closer to who was asked (laughs)

BM: I remember one fan. They had a complex on self-appearance and had a hard time and asked how can I like myself. So I recommended J.Cole’s Love Yours. I was happy and proud that I could listen to our fans worries.

10: What kind of charms of KARD can the fans go through?

BM: A free and natural appearance.

J.seph: I thought of a triple threat*. First of all the songs are good, the choreography is good, and the members aren’t too bad as well. (All laughs)

10: Then Let’s praise each members’ charms.

J.Seph: When Jiwoo first came it, I really thought like she was an Empress/Queen. (All laughs) Why are you laughing? I’m being sincere. Seriously I thought that. First of all, Jiwoo’s tone is very beautiful. She dances well and when she dances is also pretty. She’s also cute. A lovely little sister. As a singer, she is also just as charming as a person. Like a puppy, she’s also chic and full of color. A woman of all trade. (Jeon Somin: Isn’t this coming out as too constructed?) I’ve always thought that.

Jeon Jiwoo: BM Oppa is insightful. His rap and dancing are great of course and apart from that, his aura is heavy like a ‘King’. The big brother who holds the center of KARD. Strong and reliable.

BM: The tone of Somin’s voice is very pretty. There is that force to make you listen. When you listen live, everyone is doing well but I think the gaze is on Somin. The kind if feel from pop star Ariana Grande. A cool little sister.

Jeon Somin: J.Seph oppa likes people. Always taking care of you and if you’re by his side you’ll be laughing and will worry. Furthermore, when he raps he is really cool. When you rap in a low tone, it will be tight but it feels full. J.Seph and BM are both insightful. I’m always thankful.

10: When are the two of you, dependent on your older brothers?

Jeon Somin: When I am having a hard time, I will sometimes talk to them about it because it’s comfortable. It’s because we’ve known each other awhile it’s comfortable.

Jeon Jiwoo: Just by being next to them my will becomes strong. I still haven’t gone through anything difficult enough to tell (laughs) being a KARD member makes me so happy!

10: On the contrary, I think there will be times when the older brothers will be reliant on the sisters.

J.Seph: The two of them seem to like my mother. (all laughs)

BM: When we need it, they will nag at us. J.Seph hears it a lot.

J.Seph: For live practices, we need to use a mic to practice, but once I’m done, it’ll definitely be gone. Sometimes you can find it in the fridge or couch when that happens my sisters takes care of me a lot.

For a while now I’ve felt very confused watching Tyler’s youtube videos, and I’d like to share my thoughts here and see how other fans feel and (maybe?) how Tyler himself feels.

This probably looks like a set up to another whiny remark about missing the ‘old’ Tyler, the ‘good ‘ol glory days of youtube’….It’s not; sure, those ‘days’ are what bought me to Tyler in the first place…2013/2014…but regardless of how much I enjoy Tyler’s channel I am a fan of him, and that’s not changing anytime soon! I implore him to do whatever makes him happiest. And that’s a huge reason why I want to bring this up, not just because I know a lot of other Tyler fans like myself have been turned off his channel of late (across the last year).

If Tyler loves what he does on youtube now, then that’s that, he should 100% continue. But I guess i’m not convinced that he’s not a little lost himself of what direction to take it. It feels like he’s trying to drag along his ‘old’ content - personal, casual, chatty, vlogs - with what he enjoys creating now - more professional footage and a less personal (not to mean less genuine) connection. But the format of the latter, the wide panned cameras and edited drawings over the video (which are super cute!!) does not gel (at least for me) with the former. You can make and be successful with TV-style productions on the youtube platform, but a TV-style vlog completely defeats the vlog’s purpose. And that’s where i’m left wondering what the purpose, and audience, is of Tyler’s channel now.

His latest video now is ‘what REALLY happened at vidcon in Amsterdam’. In contradiction to the title, I feel as though there is no content of any real substance in this video. It’s more like an advertisement for the convention itself. It’s not really been made as a time capsule for Tyler himself, and it’s not really been made to give us actual insight into his experience, as we don’t see him interacting with other content creators or talking about cool shit at the panels. It’s sweeping glimpses and music playing over it all, like a trailer. I’m not certain who this video serves.

Because of the littering of ‘whiny remarks’ (as I mentioned at the start) in his comment sections, I feel as though Tyler is not allowing an open conversation about this. Maybe my opinion here is completely unwelcome, because of course he can make videos for himself and not give a damn about anyone engaging at all. But his responses to criticisms or complaints have been on the defensive, which suggests to me he’s either confused himself or not wanting to share his real opinion with us. Or he’s seeing every comment made as a comment about wanting the ‘old’ him back, when in a lot of cases, like mine, it’s wanting to better define what the ‘new’ him is.

I think he’s in an odd transition currently. Personally, I believe he needs to go one way or the other; embark on the Tyler Oakley Show style videos, which could really pave the way for his career as a host, OR break down his videos again to make them more casual and personal. Right now, it’s like he’s trying to please us, the way he thinks he can, and himself….but the two don’t mesh. As many have said, a lot of his channel feels like the supporting promotion for his other career ventures, rather than being the central heart of everything.

While i’m sharing my (probably definitely) unwelcome opinion, here’s a list of youtubers still doing the classic vlog-like content that I think have evolved well and have continued to be really engaging and maintained their quality; dan howell, phil lester, superfruit, zoella, grace helbig, hannah hart, dodie clark, ben j pierce, caspar lee, connor franta, jenna marbles, macdoesit, rose and rosie.

This whole conflict of interests I have (wanting to support tyler; not enjoying his youtube channel) plays no part in my engagement as a fan. I will still be there for his future endeavors and I’m happy to just be a fan of Psychobabbble, which I love a lot (it’s the chatty stupidity and openness I initially loved in audio format, which in some ways feels even more like being at an LA lunch with Tyler himself (making that weird cyclebaby voice so that the waiter is scared off from serving our table.)) I love hearing his stories and opinions and i’d love if that became what his youtube channel is about again. I’m also happy if it doesn’t, and he does something completely different, or gives it a break even. I hope he knows that he’s free to create and strive for whatever he please. But, and maybe i’m wrong, i’m not sure his videos of late are making anyone truly happy.

So here’s my most recent OC, a watery boy by the name of Theikos! It’s kind of my first time drawing water hair, and I really can’t tell if it looks like water or just jelly??? and I was hoping to maybe get some insight on that, and how to maybe spice him up without making him too mary sue/op :-0

(Plus any other insight you think would be helpful in developing him out a bit more- he’s still in ‘beta’!)

Thank you in advance! <3

The hair looks nice, I would try to make it more translucent and adding more white into it. His design is really nice; it reminds me of greek mythology. You could change his shoes to look like Hermes winged shoes, that would be p cool.

If you do houses as broadway musicals, I think Hamilton would be Slytherin. The entire thing is about being remembered and the legacies we leave behind. I feel wanting to be remembered, specifically in a positive light, is linked to Slytherins' desire for power.

That’s a very insightful point! I probably won’t end up writing it, but this is really cool either way, and if someone were to submit it, I think it’d be good for them to take this into account. I really like this!

A/N: HECK YES!!! Two parts in two days! I’m feeling very generous lately… Just kidding, I wanted to surprise you guys since you seemed to like this idea so much… Like I said, sorry about the warnings, but this was originally supposed to be like a way to channel my insecurities, if y’all would remember from part 1. OH YEAH I FORGOT TO MENTION PART 3 IS ON IT’S WAY!!! If you want to be tagged, just asked, I’m totally cool with that… And I’m actually really proud of my ending quote thingy, and yes, I DID COME UP WITH THAT LAST PART BY MYSELF… And I also don’t know why I make these so long since no one is reading anymore, but if you are, Please let me know if you like these little author insights… And go read the stupid fic already.

You were in the kitchen, making a batch of lemon cupcakes while Clint’s kids were watching a movie in the front room. The filling, a raspberry reduction, was almost done, and you were almost ready to start the buttercream frosting. Your phone beeped and a text popped up from Clint.

“Hey, we’re almost home, can you come open the garage?” You read quietly out-loud. You walked into the front room, turned off the TV, and picked up baby Nathaniel. “Cooper, Lila! Your parents are home!” You laughed at their excited faces, and followed them into the garage, pushing the button to deactivate the security system. The kids rushed to their parents as the car rolled in. You put Nathaniel down, and let him toddle towards his parents. You heard the timer go off for the cupcakes, and you slipped back inside. You smiled at the sunny yellow look of the treats. These were Peter’s favorite of the snacks that you would make regularly. When he was younger, he would try to stuff the entire cupcake into his mouth. It was hilarious to watch, but eventually, he learned to savor them, even if that didn’t stop him from eating most of the batch at super-speed. The thought of Peter made you hold your necklace, the one he had given you on your 14th birthday. You missed Peter loads, but the pain was a lot better being far away from him. It had been nearly 3 weeks since you left Stark Tower, and surprisingly, Nat had only accused Clint of kidnapping you a couple hundred times. You started frosting a cooled batch of cupcakes when someone poked your insides making you jump. You nearly dropped the cupcake, and turned to see Clint’s face grinning at you, and you stuck your tongue out at him. Clint had always taken a liking to you, and sometimes treated you like one of his kids, or other times, like his little sister. Overall, your relationship was very strong, like his and Wanda’s. Laura walked in grinning, and you ran up to hug her. Laura had been your mentor with Natasha before she retired, and she was very protective of you too. That’s why you loved coming here when you could sneak away from New York. Lila and Cooper treated you like their big sister, and you were the only person that baby Pietro (as you referred to him, since that was his middle name) would go to besides Laura and Nat.

“Hey, Y/N! How were the kids?” Laura asked, hugging you tightly. Clint was inspecting the cupcakes for the one with the most frosting, just the way he liked them. Finding a suitable one, he picked it off the counter and bit into it.

“Perfect, as usual.” You smiled, genuinely.

“Speaking of perfect,” Clint said through a full mouth. “I talked to Steve on Saturday. It seems your excuses were all too perfect. Why didn’t you tell us about the Peter thing?” His looked at you with raised eyebrows, and behind you, Laura was glaring at him. She had told him explicitly not to bring it up bluntly, knowing you would get flustered. Your hand flew up to fidget with your necklace again. It always reminded you of him, but you had been too attached to leave it at home, or even take it off.

“I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.” You mumbled, lying. Clint and Laura looked at each other again, knowing how much the fight was bothering you.

“Apparently he’s been bugging everyone at that Tower to try and find out how you were doing, since you haven’t been answering any of his calls, either.” Clint poked, and you looked at the floor, biting your lip.

“Y/N, we’re just worried about you. Everyone is.” Laura said, putting her hand on your shoulder. “It’s not healthy to keep all your emotions wrapped up like this. I know it’s hurting you, but Peter is your best friend.”

“And your crush.” Clint wagged his eyebrows as he finished his second cupcake. You and Laura gave him the exact same expression at the same time, and he held back a laugh.

“There isn’t exactly a lot to talk about.” You said, subconsciously rubbing the fading bruise on your cheek. Clint opened his mouth to retort, but the timer went off for another batch of cupcakes, so you slipped behind him without another word.

“Bye! I’ll see you guys when the team comes out in a few months!” You called giving Lila, Cooper, Clint, Laura, and Nathaniel a last hug. You climbed into the quinjet, and waved good bye through the window as you flew higher and higher. You sighed happily, missing them already. You were about to settle back to write, but your phone beeped from the depths of your bag. You seriously considered ignoring it, but that always ticked Tony off when you ignored his texts, so you fished around for the device, found it, and clicked it on. A text showed up on the front from Aunt May, and you read the message.

“Hey, Y/N! Listen, I know you’re out of town, but we seriously need a shopping trip! When do you get back in?” May’s happy disposition shown through the text, but you cringed inwardly. You loved May, and she had always taken care of you like she was your mom, but you worried if she would ask you about Peter. You hadn’t taken it very well when Clint had interrogated you, and you had spent that night tossing and turning while memories of the fight swam around your mind. But it was May. She would know not to ask, right? You bit your lip, and texted back quickly.

“I’m flying back in right now.” You read quickly, and pressed send. It was only a second before you got a reply.

“Okay! It’s been long enough! How about tomorrow, Friday, since you guys have school off. I can pick you up at the Tower, I think Peter is going over there for his intern thing, anyway.” You sent affirmation to the plan, and sighed at relief that you would be able to avoid Peter. You settled back into the comfy interior of the jet, and watched the rain that had just begun to pound at the windows.

“What do you think of this dress, Y/N?” May held up a very tight and form-fitting red dress, that would probably look amazing on you, but you were too self-conscious. You wrinkled your nose, and May put it back smiling. It was Friday, and you were having a great time, and Peter hadn’t been brought up once.

“So, why haven’t you been coming over lately? What happened between you and Peter?” May asked, trying to act nonchalant. Your heart dropped, and you knew your mind had spoken too soon. You looked at May, who was looking at you.

“Pete- he didn’t tell you what happened?” You asked slowly, surprised that she didn’t know. Peter would always tell May everything.

“Oh, he told me alright, but I want to hear your side.” May said, flipping through a few more dresses. She looked up at you suddenly with a gray sweater dress. You shook your head, trying to think of something to say.

“Um, I don’t… Well, I…” May smiled at your stumbling words. “What I mean to say is, I was just bugging Peter, obviously, and I sort of happened to walk in on this thing that Peter-”

“He made out with Liz.” May said, her eyes shining with mischievous intent.

“Well, uh, yeah,” You said, laughing with wonder at how she knew that. “And, uh, Peter just got really mad, and it sort of spiraled into the big fight, and then…” You stopped talking, your side and cheek aching at the memory of what happened next.

“And then?” May asked, wondering what you were talking about. Peter hadn’t mentioned there was a second part to the fight.

“I-uh, I left.” You said, not thinking you would make it through the rest of the full story without breaking down. May knew you were hiding something, but she knew Peter had obviously really hurt you, in multiple ways. So she dropped the topic. The rest of the afternoon passed without mention of Peter, and May took you out for a shake before she dropped you back off at the Tower. On the way back to the Tower, May and you were talking in the car about a movie that you had been meaning to watch forever.

“Oh, I bought that movie ages ago! You should come over tomorrow night and watch it!” May offered. Your face lit up with excitement, but then you remembered that Peter would probably be there. May saw your excitement dim as you bit your lip, and her concern about you heightened. “Peter won’t be there, he’s sleeping at Ned’s tomorrow night.” You hesitated, but then decided against your doubts.

“Okay! As long as Peter won’t be there, I don’t want to press my presence on him.” You said, looking out into the bustling streets of New York. May smiled sadly at you, worried about how much Peter had affected you. Before long, you arrived at the Tower, and you said goodbye to May as you hopped out of the car. You ran up to your room, and fell back on your bed. You were alone, and the band of your anxiety quickly tightened around your chest, making it difficult to breathe. You froze on your bed, trying to get a grasp. These had been happening since the fight, but you used every last drop of your energy, and even dipped into some of your power’s supply to keep yourself looking normal and happy around everyone else. You looked at the wall, and counted to 10, the way Bruce had taught you when he found out you had anxiety and severe stress. The hyperventilating stopped, and the shaking started. These symptoms were the ones caused by stress, and you stood up quickly to stretch and try to relieve the tension. Spots started clouding your vision, and you fell back on your bed, trying not to think about how Peter would’ve helped you if he didn’t hate you.

“Peter, I’m home!” May called as she entered the apartment. Peter was sitting on the couch, his knees pulled up to his chest and his face in his hands, the way he curled up when he was worried about something.

“Hey, May.” He said, his voice muffled and dejected. She put her bag down, and sat on the other side of the couch.

“I was out with Y/N today.” She said. Peter’s head popped up at the sound of your name.

“She’s back? How did she look? What did she say? Is she okay? Where did you guys go?” Peter asked, the questions that had been building in his mind for a month came swirling out. May smiled sadly, the same way she had looked at you earlier.

“She’s, um, she’s physically okay as far as I can tell,” Peter looked down again, knowing that you weren’t physically ‘alright’ thanks to him. May continued on slowly. “Peter, she seems really stressed, like the way she would get when she was younger. I think she was trying to hide it, but her hands and shoulders were shaking, and her lips were raw from biting them so much.” Peter put his face back in his hands, and let out a shaky breath. He had done this to you, and it had all been for Liz Allen. He wished he could go back, to save you from all this.

“Peter, I’m really worried about Y/N. And you. Neither of you know how to survive without the other, and I know you can fix this. She thinks you hate her.” Peter flinched at the sentence. He felt it was too late. Maybe if he had caught you before you left, it wouldn’t be too late. But it was, and he had stopped trying to contact you a week after you left. He had given up on you, even though you had never given up on him. It killed him, just thinking about it. He got up from the couch without saying another word to his aunt. He walked into his room, and pulled out a paper he had saved from one of your old notebooks. He fell back on his bed with it, and read the note with the swirling hand-writing.

Friends forever,

Never apart.

Maybe by distance,

But never by heart.

It was on of your favorite little quotes, but you had added something to the old saying.

He may not love me

But I do not care

For wherever he is

My heart will be there.

bluedaggers-lewis  asked:

^hey yo! what do you think of Van Helsing (2004)?

I made a whole post a while back about how I’d absolutely fuck up writing a Batman story despite the fact that I love Batman.  It was predicated on the idea that a person can love and genuinely understand a story in great depth and still fuck it up because they’re just not the right storyteller for the job - that being a fan of a story doesn’t mean you’re the right person to adapt it.

I mention this because Van Helsing is that idea in action.  It is Stephen Sommers’s “How I’d Ruin It” blog post, only in film form.

I was super psyched for that movie before it came out for a somewhat strange reason.  Universal released DVD box sets of all the Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolf Man movies a few months before its release, and they all had promotional videos for Van Helsing in them.  The videos weren’t JUST giant ads, though - they were retrospectives about the characters, one for each box set.  Those retrospectives just happened to be hosted by Stephen Sommers, and also just happened to talk about how those characters would be appearing again on the silver screen for the first time in years in this new movie called Van Helsing.  And while this does mean the retrospectives were kind of there to shill a new blockbuster, well, they still feel remarkably genuine and informative.  Stephen Sommers loves those characters, and he loves them in a very deep, analytical way.  When he talks about them in the retrospectives, he doesn’t just talk about surface details - he goes into the psychology of the characters, their pathos, their dimensions, the core conflicts at the heart of each of them, etc.  A lot of directors handling a remake will say really surface level shit - “Optimus Prime is so cool, he’s an icon, lots of people love him, I’m so proud to bring this character to the big screen.”  Stephen Sommers isn’t like that - he actually has insightful thoughts on what makes the Universal Monsters work as characters.  And they extend beyond the original movies, too - he references the book versions of Dracula and Frankenstein in a good amount of detail as well, and has some comments that show awareness of the non-Universal film takes on the characters.  He’s both done his research, understood it, and clearly loves the property.  It’s everything you want the adapter of a property you love to do.

But then you have the end product.  And that’s when you come to the realization: no matter how much an artist may love and understand another artist’s work, there is no guarantee they can do it justice.  Sometimes, no matter how much thought and admiration is put into the act, the artist is just wrong for the material.  This, sadly, is the case for Stephen Sommers.

Don’t get me wrong - he doesn’t completely fuck it up.  Van Helsing has some genuinely great ideas mixed into it.  Sommers’s idea for werewolf transformations is a particular stand out to me - rather than simply growing hair and claws, his werewolves tear their skin open to reveal the wolf form beneath, and vice versa for their transformations back into humans.  Lycanthropy literally involves tearing yourself apart - a visual that is apt for a character who is defined by their violent internal conflict, which is exactly what makes the Wolf Man/Larry Talbot so compelling.  And Sommers knew that - he says it explicitly in the Wolf Man retrospective featurette.  It was an intentional, intelligent, well thought out artistic choice.

There are other, less “deep” choices that also work too - like making Dracula’s bat form human-sized so it’s more terrifying to modern audiences, while also reinforcing his demonic nature with the whole “giant bat winged humanoid” imagery.  That’s a very typical Hollywood style change, but it’s one that works.

However, these good ideas are hampered by the fact that Sommers just isn’t built to tell the kind of story Dracula and the others thrive in.  The Universal Monsters are Gothic Horror stars - they belong in a horror story, in a story with dread and tension and atmosphere.  Sommers, on the other hand, thrives with big, fast paced action set pieces, quippy dialogue, and an irreverent tone.  He’s an action movie guy, not a Gothic Horror guy.  He can understand the Gothic Horror, but he can’t replicate it.

He tries - he gives Dracula, Frankenstein, and Van Helsing a lot of philosophic monologues in an attempt to capture their character depth, but he’s clearly not comfortable enough with that to pull it off.   What was intended to be “deep” ends up just being a long violation of the “show, don’t tell” rule.

An example: in the Dracula retrospective, Sommers talks about how Dracula, for all his evil and wickedness, is ultimately tragic because he doesn’t enjoy any of it.  He is lacking in any feeling and he knows that - he’s hollow and he can feel the gap and it disturbs him how little substance there is to him in his un-ending existence.  That’s straight from the book and it’s an accurate reading of Dracula’s character.  Unlike the book, however, Sommers doesn’t show us this information - instead, Dracula has a big motive rant that basically feels like he’s reading us Sommers’ college thesis paper analysis of Dracula’s character, rather than, y’know, saying words an actual human would say.  It is not the only time this happens.

On the flip side, the scenes where Sommers is in his element - the action scenes with quippy dialogue and big set pieces and all that - are really not well suited to these characters.  Vampires and werewolves and frankensteins aren’t necessarily ill suited to action - but Dracula and the Wolf Man and Frankenstein’s Monster are.  A werewolf who hurdles over an exploding cart is fine, but the Wolf Man isn’t supposed to, y’know, have fun doing exciting action sequences.  The Wolf Man is supposed to be emotionally disturbed by the fact that he keeps killing people against his own will.

And sure, these characters have been placed in other genres before - but those stories have always been parodies, and the good ones still keep the characters themselves in tact.  Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is funny because you have the juxtaposition of Dracula acting exactly like Dracula despite the fact that his victims are two ridiculous clowns instead of your typical horror protagonists.  Putting Dracula in a situation where Dracula normally isn’t present is inherently hilarious - which works fine in a comedy, but not so fine in an action movie, which requires you to be able to take the stakes seriously, but is structured in a way where a character like Dracula feels too out of place to be taken seriously.

It’d be like if Sauron showed up in Die Hard - Sauron is a credible threat in Middle Earth, but he’s a fucking joke when he’s next to John McClane because those two should not be sharing a story together.  Unless you’re intending to play this for comedy, it will not work.

And that’s the problem with Van Helsing - it’s an action movie made with characters who don’t belong in an action movie, and no matter how much love and thought the creator poured into it, that recipe was not going to work.  And a lot of love and thought was put into it - Sommers wasn’t just trying his best, he was trying his best with an absolute passion project.  But passion wasn’t enough - in the end, they just weren’t right for each other.

The Rage Aspect and its God Tiers/Classpect Roles

Keywords: Unconditional Hate or Fear, Refusal, Defiance, Rejection, Skeptical Criticism, Doubt, Negativity, Despair, Getting the ‘Red Light’ or a Hard Stop, NO

Symbols: Immovable Objects, False/Counterfeit, 'Demons’

Rage is one of the 12 Aspects of Homestuck. Its Opposite is the Aspect Hope. When I think of Rage, I think of Undying Doubt and Skepticism that everything around is 'perfect’ or going to be okay, one way or another. Everything will actually turn out wrong, if not completely horrendous in the end. Rage is unconditional Hate and Fear, it is the cold shoulder, rejecting any thing or person. It is the underlying thought that what is here is wrong and false. It is the thought that there is no will and there is no way! No matter how deceivingly peaceful everything looks on the surface, its not real! It’s actually false, lies all of it! Rage is despairing and refusing that everything will be 'just fine’, so their answer is always an adamant NO! But don’t think of Rage as only a fierce angry thing lashing out at everyone, Rage is also like the Demon that creeps towards you from behind, paralyzing you and slowly binding you and dragging you away with no escape. It is the Cage, the Immovable Object that constantly surrounds you on all sides.

(side note: Rage may sound bad, but it is the only thing holding you back from Hope and their charging blind beliefs, which can be just as dangerous. It’s good to know when to hold back and say No instead of always saying Yes to everything. Rage can be just as much Constructive as Destructive.)

What’s cool about this Karamel Appreciation week is connecting with the other people in your fandom, and getting an insight into their shipper mind on such a grand scale- like even reading everyone’s ‘aha’ moment is cool af, and so fascinating to me. Normally you wouldn’t get to bond over moments like this due to the sheer mass of a fandom, so thank you for organising this (and to those who are taking part) because it’s really fucking neat.

I really don't mind classpect analysis as harmless up until the point where someone talking about classpects starts to let their pet ideas about whatever classpects mean start to contradict with what actually happens in the comic. Like - I read some classpect analysis blog try to claim that Gamzee was blameless in beating Terezi because he was just suffering from a "rage-aspect induced bloodlust" or some bullshit like that. As if that was a thing that Hussie ever established at all.

It is mostly harmless but don’t try to claim you’re giving us new insights into the text or helping us understand anything about the theming or symbolism of homestuck by listing all the cool powers you think a bard of heart would have. Really, that’s not ‘analysis’ at all. It’s fanwank.

right. players dictate their classpects, not the other way around - even a “passive” player like roxy isnt just a slave to the ~will of the void~

Hey, this is probably a weird question but I've been thinking about making a (side)blog where I can post about feminism and I don't? Really know where I'd begin? There was such drama among several radfem blogs and I don't want to end up running into the middle of a mine field because I'm new :(

Well up you’re definitely on the right track for making it a side and not your main haha. I would not worry way too much about specific users and focus more on the messages you’re putting out there. A radfem can turn out to be an ass, but like posts are posts, and if they are speaking truth then that’s, I hate to use this word, ~valid~.

I don’t really watch who I repost from, which might be a bad idea in hindsight, but I also don’t buy into the drama. You don’t have to participate, and if anons start trying to get on you about drama you can literally ignore that shit. Radfem drama is totally overrated, and it’s generally best to just keep doing you and doing your content.

I can totally recommend you some radfem and radfem-leaning blogs that I generally reblog from like @anarchistmermaid is a pretty cool cat, also into biology/medicine and whatnot. @clittymcgee changes her username a lot and sometimes get into drama but she’s fun, same with @lowkey-radical & @radical-sloth, @spencer-shayy. I don’t really converse with these blogs but I also think they’re cool @aawb, @acatnamedsylvesterf, @appropriately-inappropriate gets REAL into the discourse but I totally follow that but it might be a bit too hot for someone trying to stay out of it, @genderatheism is coolio jones too & detransitioned so her insights can be awesome. I also follow @lesbian-lizards, @dykessociation and some others.

I used to have similar fears, anon, but most of the drama is either petty or just plain dumb, and participation is far from necessary. Good luck out there, be open to learning new things and occasionally changing your views, and feel free to reach out to other radfems because so far I haven’t encountered a single one I wouldn’t want to at least get coffee with.

Hope I could be helpful!
