How to Keep a Reader Interested During Slower Parts of the Story

A writing guide requested by galaxys–end

While the main plot is building, as a writer you still must keep the reader interested.

  • Expand your subplots.
  • Consider character relationships. Is your MC fighting with their best friend? Are the siblings having a break through?

  • Consider romantic relationships.

  • When achieving their goal becomes slow, does your character lose faith? Focus? Hope? What is their mental state like?
Does your character have a good support system? Are they lonely? Can your character motivate themselves, even when times get tough?

  • How is your character dealing with what’s going on in their life emotionally?
Are they happy? Grieving? Depressed? How are they coping? Do they have support from those in their life?

  • Is your character physically well?
Stress can have detrimental affects on health. Is your character run down? How is the character’s health in relation to their goal?
  • Consider reworking the plot. If the other aspects of your story can’t uphold a reader’s attention, maybe you should change how the plot works.

WHY JANE THE VIRGIN MAKES ME HAPPY:

  • NEARLY ALL THE MAIN CAST ARE LATINA/POC AND/OR WOMEN
  • THE FAMILY DYNAMIC BETWEEN THE  VILLANUEVA WOMEN IS SO SUPPORTIVE AND STRONG AND CUTE AND WARM
  • THE NARRATOR IS HILARIOUS AND WOKE AF (”OCCUPATION: WHITE PRIVILEGE”)
  • DEALS WITH ISSUES OF IMMIGRANTS AND WHITE WASHING
  • GINA RODRIGUEZ
  • SINCE THE MAIN THEME OF THE SHOW IS ABSTINENCE, ALL ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS FOCUS MORE ON EMOTION AND DYNAMIC
  • THE WOMEN DRIVE THE PLOT AND ARE NEVER BELITTLED OR OBJECTIFIED
  • THE SHOW DEALS WITH REAL ISSUES OF RELIGION AND FAITH AND PREGNANCY AND PREJUDICE AGAINST NEW MOTHERS
  • GINA RODRIGUEZ
  • ALL THE CHARACTERS ARE MULTIDIMENSIONAL AND SUPPORTIVE LIKE THERE IS NO TOXIC MASCULLINITY
  • THE PRODUCTION DESIGN IS COLORFUL AND BRIGHT
  • IT’S JUST SUCH A HAPPY NICE SHOW OKAY I LOVE IT SO MUCH

I think the reason that I tend to gravitate towards some of the censored queer relationships in media (e.g. Korrasami or Victuuri) is that their writers can’t fall back on boring romance tropes like kissing or sex to support the claim that their characters are in love. Instead, we are given these intricate, slow romances that rely on soft touches and kind words and sparkling eyes and it just feels so much more real to me. I just want to thank all that writers who have faced the constraints of the censor and took it as a challenge to reinvent the way we portray love. Thank you for showing us as beautiful and visible.

Nah, but for serious if I was looking for any kids show to introduce a trans female comfortably and with success, I would be looking at Star vs The Forces of Evil. A show which has diverse personalities for all its female characters - Jackie, Janna, Star, Ponyhead, Starfan 13. All of them are different, but they are all still girls. None of these characters are ever told to be more feminine or are called manly. Janna who literally says in the show, “I just hate contributing to gender stereotypes”.

If Marco were to identify as a trans girl in the show, they’d know not to make him any different than he is already. They already know that girls have different interests and looks and attitudes and everything. All they’d have to do is for Marco to say the words, “I don’t think I’m a boy” or “I’m a girl” and you’d believe it because that is what the show is about. Being a girl. Not wanting to fit into the standards people expect of you as a girl. Marco identifying as a girl fits into the show so well and fits into everything it is trying to represent.

i’m actually really proud of sarah from the amazing world of gumball because even though she’s annoying loOK WHAT HAPPENED TO HER ART

Ridiculous question, but can I have advice for writing Gundam's character? If that's okay?

Let out your inner dorkness darkness.

Does it sound like something a dark lord would say? No? Then add some more dark arts. Also don’t use ordinary names for anything since it is not a language he is familiar with. Are you saying he overslept? Fool! A dark lord never sleeps! Surely demons have raided his bedchamber and taken him hostage in their realm. He fought valiantly against them and although he may have overstayed his welcome, naturally he had won the battle and returned to this mortal realm for no creature holds power over the lord of darkness, Gundam Tanaka!

Do not forget his pact with the gods who take the form of this world’s creatures. To incite the fury of the dark lord is to invite the wrath of his whole kingdom and his armies of gods! Only a foolish mortal with a death wish would make the callous mistake of temporal ignorance of their formidable existence. Truly the dark lord pities you for such a short life you’d live. But fear not for despite the evil coursing through his veins, he is a higher being capable of mercy.

The Lord of Darkness challenges you to write him. Be grateful selected mortal for he would not propose such a great trial to anyone. You have heard it yourself. The calling of the dark arts. You may be an amateur in your current form but the gods have spoken with him and he knows that with dedication, you too could be worthy of writing the tales of the the Great Forbidden One.

I hate saying this but posts like, “Elena Alverez would have a S*nvers blog/would watch C*rmilla” are some of the reasons why I’m so wary of non-latinx fans in the fandom. Those types of posts seem really ignorant to me, because I think given Elena’s activism, and cultural identity and the importance she places on both she’d be way more invested in The Get Down, Black Sails, From Dusk Till Dawn, and other racially diverse shows that also feature queer characters of color.

Like, I can’t see Elena supporting S*nvers because she’d know and hate the history of white people portraying Latinxs on screen. I can’t see Elena really being into C*rmilla when The Get Down or Dusk Till Dawn exists. I could more see her on her tumblr blog arguing with others about how hurtful S*nvers was for her as a young lesbian Latina woman. Talking about how harmful the future presidency will be for Latinxs. Trying to educate people over and over again on why we use the term “LatinX”. Discussing her Cuban American identity and how it intersects with her feminism. Eventually learning and acknowledging her light skinned privilege and pushing for more inclusion of all Latinx identities. Also yelling at people who supported Castro as a great revolutionary. Elena would count herself lucky she doesn’t have a Twitter because the convos on there were just To Much for her to handle.

Elena probably has a huge crush on Kisa and wants to see more Luisa on Jane the Virgin. She probably cried a bit when Gina Rodriguez won her Golden Globe. She probably hates Teen Wolf, but loves Legend of Korra and supports Tyler Posey with all her heart.

Like if you’re gonna headcanon things about Elena by all means but don’t forget she’s Cuban American in the process is what I’m getting at.

  • Scorpion writers in S1&2: it's so nice where we're taking Walter and Happy with their character and emotional growth :)))
  • Scorpion writers in S3: fuck they grew too fast let's regress them completely and hope the fans don't notice

Day 16 and I’m still miserable and bitter without Glenn Rhee.

I'm having a Mental Breakdown Rn

Because I can’t believe YOI is ending, These 3 months went by so fast I still am in Denial that in 3 Days…Everything is gonna end.(Of Course There may be a Season 2, which seems very likely).

I changed so much in these 3 months you have no idea, Yoi showed me so many beautiful things I had never seen been done so well, such as: •Realistic Anxiety •Healthy Relationships (Victuuri,JJ and his Gf etc.) •A World where Gender doesn’t matter. You can be masculine/feminine and nobody will judge, beacuse it’s normal You can like whoever you want and people will support you. (Btw Phitchit4BestMan) •Relatable Characters that are almost impossible to completely dislike. •Seriously…Soundtrack and Animation are godly (Especially the Soundtrack which became my favorite over ZnT’s one)

I’m not saying that YOI is the best anime of the year, That’s up to you. But for me It is. It felt so refreshing, heartwarming, sometimes even heartbreaking. I cried with the characters after a failure and felt joy when they succeded.

These are my most sincere thanks to all the people who worked on this beautiful masterpiece. From the Creator Kubo-Sensei who I deeply love and respect to every Animator who put effort and tears in every frame of the routines.

Thank You

Oh, she was so proud of her Padawan - she was.

one of the biggest things that makes zero sense to me throughout this entire thing is that, we know they deliberately queer coded these characters. like it’s undeniable, the entire fucking text supports that. they based their sherlock off of TPLoSH where holmes is gay and in love with john. mark says it’s desperately unspoken, and that billy wilder regretted not fully going through with it. so, we know that he’s gay. and yet, if it was never their intention to make that explicit, then WHY did they always so aggressively deny that sherlock was gay any time they were asked about it? why not just say ‘we can see why people would think that, and it’s open to interpretation’ or something like that? what is the point in deliberately queer coding your characters, to the point of one of them on all fours wiping semen-like fluid off his lips as he transitions into the other man’s mouth, if you’re just going to shout at fans who pick up on that? shout down and belittle the queer audience who say, ‘I see this, I understand what you’re doing with this character’ like ???? that is what makes NO sense to me, whatsoever. what the fuck was the point of all of this

Do these people realize that they are in fact watching a show about ‘two blokes’ and that everyone else on the show are just supporting characters? Like that’s the point folks, that’s what the fuck you signed up for. Molly Hooper is in fact a side character, and yes, she is a narrative tool.

Most writers use their supporting characters for just that. Molly Hooper was a narrative tool when her only function was as the mousy thing that let Sherlock into the morgue. She was a narrative tool when she introduced ‘Jim from IT’ to Sherlock. She was a narrative tool when she was ‘the one that counted’ and helped him with the fall, and she was a narrative tool last season too when she was used most blatantly as a mirror for John more so than ever. She’s never been a three dimensional character and she never really will be.

That’s all she is, that’s her function in the narrative. She has what? Maybe 30 to 40 mins of total screen time in the entire series where the entire time the story being told is never once focused on her. This isn’t news. She’s there to support the narrative. That’s it.

This idea that the only way to properly like/appreciate Molly Hooper is by shipping her with Sherlock really bothers me. I’ve seen a lot of comments from those shippers that claim johnlockers just hate Molly/female characters and that’s why we don’t ship it and it’s like no???? We don’t????? We just???? Don’t ship her???? With Sherlock???? Is that a fucking crime????? Seriously the only way to like or support a female character is by shipping her with a dude? God almighty that makes me mad. It really strips a character of any personality/development/agency to ultimately base her worth as a human on her relationship with a man. They may think that’s not what they’re doing, but they are. If you don’t think Sherlock should be with Molly it means you don’t care about Molly apparently. Seriously declaring that a proper ending to a female character arc should be either

1) her getting the dude who has both used her and been completely disinterested in her or

2) her dying to cause said dude huge amounts of manpain

is just unbelievable to me. It really truly is. It makes me sad.
