I love the Women’s World Cup. I love that the cameras seek out girls and women in the stands to showcase their passion and over-the-top costumes, rather than to objectify them. I love seeing women referee - plot twist, women do know the offside rule! - and hearing women commentate - further shock, women talk about more than male footballers’ looks. I love that the very gendered language of football has be be examined - just the other day I caught myself saying, ‘She was sent off due to the last-man rule- er…that is…the last-player rule’. I love that this tournament gives women a voice and a place at the table in this extremely male-dominated, exasperatingly sexist football world.
And the football has been absolutely riveting.
