food and services

Everyone talks about how shitty and stupid customers are, why don’t we ever talk about the cool ones?

-Bilingual children translating for their parents/grandparents like a boss

-The drunk guy you had to deny a sale to and he took it so well and maybe even thanked you for keeping him safe

-The random peeps in a long check out line who stop to tell you you’re doing an amazing job

-The regulars who have your back when someone starts giving you a hard time

-Customers who let you know to keep an eye on someone for shoplifting

-Bros who insist on cleaning up their own mess/spill

-The really upbeat/cheery mom/aunt type customer that just kind of brightens your day a bit

Feel free to add, you guys. You know who they are, let’s give them some love.

I don’t get how people are just…so nasty to their servers.

I went out to eat today at a pizza place and my waitress brought me a refill without me asking and I was like, “Oh thanks so much!”

And she just got the most startled look on her face, like she was flustered that I had said thank you of all things.

When she came back a few minutes later with the check, I complimented her socks (they had a super cute pretzel pattern on them and I’m a sucker for fun socks) and her face absolutely LIT up. We had like a three minute conversation about how they’re the only part of her outfit she can really customize, having a uniform and all that, and she left with a grin on her face.

But the fact that she seemed surprised that someone was being nice to her was just so upsetting to me.

Your servers are human. Treat them like it.

Your boss is not your friend. Your boss is not someone you can trust. Your relationship with your boss needs to be entirely professional.

  • Do not do your boss favours. No working for free. No doing unreasonable duties. No working outside the hours you state as available.
  • Do not say anything to your boss. About anything. Keep it work related. They will only use personal information against you.
  • Know your rights. Know the laws. Your boss will come at you trying to get you to quit like its a favour to you. Its usually because they can’t legally fire you.
  • Be wary around your coworkers. Some will have no problem passing things along to your boss. Such as your mental health or financial standing
  • Never offer to pay for anything lost, stolen or broken. Especially if money is missing from the till.
  • Demand safe working conditions.

Your boss is only there to exploit your labour for profit. Unfortunately you need that labour to sustain yourself. Just be careful.
