A couple of years ago I was on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies and I played Carlotta Champion, which meant I got to sing a wonderful song, I’m Still Here. It’s a wonderful song, it’s a wonderful role. But it is a long song! And it has got lots and lots of words in it and none of which repeat and sometimes I might forget a few.
One night I was on stage and I forgot four whole lines, one after the other. But – much to my own amazement – I invented four new lines one after the other and even more so they rhymed!
Well, I walked offstage and I was feeling pretty proud of myself, really. I thought it was pretty marvellous, a magical moment in my theatrical career… until I got into the wings and I saw in the darkness staring straight at me the great man himself, Stephen Sondheim.
And he looked at me and he said “wow, Elaine, that was some improvisation tonight! But at least you made it rhyme”.
And I thought “Oh well, maybe I got no way with it”.
And I looked back and he said to me “Next time do you think when I’m in you could sing the lyrics I wrote?”
