Patrick was doing the finishing touches on his costume. He adjusted the orange cat ears and the orange cat tail, his hair was mussed slightly as well. He put some makeup on for the whiskers and nose. He adjusted his cardigan and shirt and did a little twirl.
“You look so cute.” Pete’s voice came from the bathroom entrance. He had a black and red striped scarf, red contacts, and vampire teeth in. Patrick blushed and thanked him softly. “Andy and Joe are almost ready. You wanna get Holland dressed?” Patrick nodded quickly and all but bolted to his sons room. He heard Pete’s chuckle as he ran.
Holland was sitting in his crib and cooed at Patrick when he saw him. Patrick picked him up and Holland went straight to grabbing Patrick’s fake ears. Patrick laughed lightly and prised the ears from Holland’s hands.
“Sorry baby, you can’t have those. Ready for your costume?” Patrick’s voice was rough from disuse. It had been a rough couple of days and Patrick hadn’t talked as much. He smiled at Holland as the baby giggled. “As long as you cooperate, this should go alright.” Patrick grabbed Hollands shark costume out of the bag. Holland would be warm in his lighter onsie underneath the costume.
Pete had made sure to buy a shark onsie just in case Holland got too hot and they needed to take it off of him. Patrick dressed Holland in the onsie and go to work on the costume. The baby was surprisingly very easy to dress in his costume. By the time Patrick finished, he had gained an audience. He turned with Holland in his arms and smiled at his husbands.
There were awe’s as they took in the small baby dressed in his costume.
Holland was calm as he was passed from one father to the next. Patrick took this time to look over Andy and Joe.
Andy had a witch hat on, and that was about it for his costume. Joe decided to go down Patrick’s path. He had black ears on his head and a black tail. His shirt was black and red striped as well and had blue jeans on. Pete pulled Patrick close and made sure all of them were smiling as he took a photo with Patrick’s camera.
“Are we ready?” Joe asked as he handed Holland back to Patrick. Patrick nodded, along with the rest of his husbands, and they were out the door. They made sure to put out plenty of bowls of candy with a sign that said ‘take 3’ on their porch. Pete had wanted to make sure the kids would get candy even if they weren’t home to physically give it to them.
They stepped foot outside and were immediately hit with a blast of cold air. Patrick shivered lightly, thinking that he should have brought a heavier jacket with him. He brushed off the cold though, and pushed forward with his husbands.
They men were stopped often by mothers looking at the baby in Patrick’s arms. They would ask questions and talk to Holland, and Holland would just smile and giggle at the strange ladies looking at him. Patrick felt like a proud father. He thought this was the best Halloween he had experience in a while.
Each house they stopped at, they were given more candy than needed. It was mostly grandmothers and mothers in the houses and they would coo when they saw Holland. They would make sure to give enough candy for the men and some soft things for Holland to suck on as well. Patrick would tug on Pete’s sleeve to get him to decline, but the women would understand and turn down their declines. Patrick would nod thank you’s and they would be on their way.
The worst part of that night was when they entered a fairly spooky neighborhood. Pete, Joe and Andy all assured Patrick that it would be fine. But Patrick was more worried about Holland. He didn’t want someone to pop out and scare the baby. He wanted Holland’s first Halloween to be enjoyable, not terrifying.
Sure enough, Patrick had ended up trailing further behind his husbands than he planned on, and he had to quickly walk to catch up. It wasn’t moments later that someone popped out from behind a tree at a person’s house. Patrick jumped and Holland screamed. The wailing of the baby scared Patrick even more. He held Holland close and squeezed his eyes shut. He rocked Holland back and forth and could vaguely make out the person apologizing.
Patrick was held by another person, probably Andy, and was rocked back and forth as well. Holland’s cries eventually quieted down to little whimpers. Patrick opened his eyes and held Holland carefully. He wiped the tears from the baby’s face and gave him kisses on his forehead.
“Sorry about that Patrick.” Patrick shook his head at the apology.
“It’s alright. It was bound to happen.” He said, quietly as the man that jumped out was still there. Pete told the guy Patrick was alright and that all was forgiven and was even allowed to say hi to Holland. Once they said their goodbye’s, Pete turned them all around.
“There’s one last house we absolutely have to go to.” Pete dragged his husbands through neighborhoods, occasionally stopping for candy, until they came to a stop at a very familiar house.
They all stalked up the doorway and Pete rang the doorbell. The door opened not moments later and there stood Meagan. She gushed over Holland in his little shark costume and invited them in for some hot chocolate and food.
“He’s so cute!” She squealed. Holland smiled at her and giggled when she placed numerous kisses all over his face. “Thanks for stopping by. I was wondering if you were gonna.” Joe smiled at her.
“Of course we would. We wouldn’t deprive you of seeing this handsome man all dressed up in his shark outfit.” They talked a while longer, until it was later in the night and Holland started looking tired. His small yawns caused Meagan to coo even more about how adorable the baby was.
The men said their goodbye’s and made their way home with extra candy and large jugs of hot chocolate. They stumbled into their home late and Holland was passed out on Patrick’s shoulder, cheeks a little red from the wind and his fist in his mouth. Pete helped Patrick take Holland out of his costume, only waking the tired baby once. They changed his diaper and set him down in his crib with his favorite blanket, snapped a photo, then left the room.
The husbands were on the couch thinking about the night.
“It was pretty great.” Andy said, smiling at his husbands. Joe nodded, agreeing heavily with the statement.
“Holland liked the attention.” Pete said, bringing a laugh out of his husbands. “It was a pretty great Halloween.” Patrick nodded, leaning his head on Joe’s shoulder.
“Yeah, it was.”
