fly training

Flying With a Service Dog

This is based off my personal experience flying with a service dog:

I have noticed that one thing that is very nerve wracking for many service dog handlers is flying with their service dog for the first time. Not knowing what to expect in a situation that is hard to train for specifically can make a person very anxious. I wanted to write a guide based on my own experience so that people had a comprehensive thing to look at!

Airlines that people have good experiences with:

  • Southwest
    • Southwest is by far the most accommodating. I flew with them. Once notified of my dog, they gave me the seat next to me for free so she could have more room. They printed out a “reserved” sign that I could sit on the seat so that no one could sit there and the flight attendants knew what was going on. They did this for free.
    • Southwest has free seating. As a disabled person, you get preferred seating so you will be able to board first and get bulkhead if you want it.
  • Frontier
  • American

Important things your dog should know:

  • A stellar settle.
  • Sit stays.
  • Follow directions off leash (if you don’t use a metal free lead and want to have your dog go through the metal detector.)
  • Handle very busy areas.
  • Handle VERY loud noises.
  • A good heel
  • Potty on artificial grass
  • Potty on command
  • A very tight tuck
  • Being okay with strangers touching them.
  • Staying even when you walk away

Before the flight:

  • Tell the airline that you have a service dog. It will make your flight a lot easier if people are alerted to this ahead of time.
  • Ask if you can have bulk head seating. These are the seats at the front of the plane that have much more foot room than any other seat. Most airlines will give you the seating for free.
  • Choose your seat (if you can). I find that sitting by the window is the best place so that your dog doesn’t spill out into the aisle. If you’re flying Southwest, there is open seating. And because you get preferred seating, you can choose whichever one when you get on the plane.
  • Do you need mobility assistance? Did you know there are people at the airport whose sole job is to push people to their destinations in wheelchairs? If you call ahead of time, you can have someone waiting for you at the check in desk to help you!
  • Try to limit your dog’s food and water intake. Your dog can go the day without food and with limited water. I promise they can handle it. It will help with the going to the bathroom situation. You won’t have to worry about it as much.

What to pack:

  • Are you checking a bag or carrying on? Either is fine! Most airlines will give you a free carry on bag as well as personal item. So for example a backpack and a purse. They will charge you for more. If you need a bag separately for your dog’s things, you need to know this: YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR BAGS CARRYING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT. And guess what! Your dog’s supplies are part of your medical equipment! So if you need to check a bag for your dog or bring an extra carry on, you do not need to pay!
  • Things to pack for your dog:
    • Small first aid kit
    • Water bottle (empty – you can fill it on the other side of security)
    • Extra collar
    • Extra leash
    • Extra vest
    • Treats
    • 2-3 days worth of dog food
    • Poop bags
    • Portable bowls
    • A mat/blanket for your dog
  • Anything in your carry on that is liquid needs to be in a 3 oz or smaller container and ALSO fit into a quartz sized plastic bag.

When you get to the airport

  • If you haven’t already printed out your boarding passes at home, you need to do that first. There are kiosks that you can do this without talking to a person, but I highly suggest going up to the desk to do your check in if you can. You’ll be able to remind them about your dog and confirm things like bulkhead seating or assistance.
  • Once you have your boarding pass and any bags that you’re checking taken care of, make your way towards security. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. Find someone who works there – they’re usually wearing blue, or a white shirt with black pants. Airports are big and confusing. Flying with a dog for the first time is scary enough. It can be exacerbated by not having flown alone before.

Security

  • There are a few ways to go about this so I will outline all I can think of!
    • You do not need to remove your dog’s gear, even if there is metal on it. Put everything that you need onto the belt and then go to the metal detector. Put your dog into a sit/stay and walk through when they direct you to. Once you get through, call your dog through after you. The metal detector WILL beep. This is where your dog being okay with strangers touching them is important – your dog will get a quick pat down. That’s it! They may test your hands and your dog’s vest for explosives or chemicals with these little paper pad things, but it isn’t too complicated.
    • A lot of people use metal free gear when going to the air port to make things easier. you would follow the same steps as above but your dog wouldn’t need to be patted down.
    • You can also remove your dog’s gear entirely and put it through the belt with all your other belongings. Your dog needs to be good at a sit stay and you need to be able to handle them without gear, but otherwise pretty simple!
  • Grab your stuff afterwards and you’re done!

At the gate

  • There is usually a desk at or near every gate. Regardless of if you reminded them at the check in, go up to the desk and introduce yourself and remind them again of your dog. There may be something else they can do to accommodate you. That, and I find that people are more willing to help you later if they are aware of you.
  • Wait until your flight!

On the plane

  • Get to your seat and put down any blankets or mats you brought your dog, if any. Have your dog get into a settle/tuck and then sit down.
  • I have treats ready because I hadn’t flown with my dog before and I was unsure of how she’d handle it. She got nervous during take off and landing so having the treats available is helpful.

That’s it! It’s not as scary as it seems and I’m sure afterwards, you’ll find yourself wondering why you were worried in the first place. I hope that this guide helps the anxiety in the meantime!

Ever want to ask a real life astronaut a question? Here’s your chance!

Astronaut Jessica Meir will be taking your questions in an Answer Time session on Saturday, March 11 from 4:30-5:30pm ET/1:30-2:30pm PT here on NASA’s Tumblr. Make sure to ask your question now by visiting http://nasa.tumblr.com/ask!

Jessica Meir was selected to become an astronaut in 2013 and was part of NASA’s first astronaut class that was 50% female. She and her astronaut classmates are training to fly to space now and are involved in the future of our human exploration program. She’d like to be one of the first astronauts to set foot on Mars and pursue technological and scientific advances.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, a Master of Science in Space Studies from the International Space University, and a Doctorate in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD). Feysand Growing up HC

-What if Rhys and Feyre were raised in Velaris together?

-Being economically successful, Feyre’s father is close friends with the High Lord. Both  their respective wife and mate have children around the same time.

-The Merchant’s daughter and the High Lord’s son are practically raised in unison.

-They nap together. They take their first steps together. They’re potty-trained together. They share toys as toddlers. They finger paint together. They take naps together. They take lessons from Rhys’s mother. Basically, they live together.

-When they’re 3 months old, they’re sharing a crib and boom the bond clicks. Though, not so boom because they’re babies and they don’t feel it.

- Their parents don’t know because the only thing they notice is that their kids are now sleeping right next to each other.

-They become an iconic childhood duo.

-The one thing everyone wonders, though, as the two run down the Rainbow, is “When is their mate bond gonna snap?”

-Feyre and Rhys can’t tell, they just believe that this is what a best friend is supposed to be like, since Rhys’s parents are their only mate example.

-When Rhys starts to learn how to fly, Feyre is pissed. Her dialogue for two weeks is a relentless stream of “This is not fair.” “Why do you get to fly?” “You’re not even grateful, you prick.” “I want to fly.” “Why can’t you take me with you?”

-Rhys, being a child, sticks his tongue out at her.

-Momma Rhys watches from the kitchen. Once Feyre storms out, she calls to Rhys, “You are not my boy if you don’t go out of your way to take a female in your life flying.”

-Momma trains her son real quick in the art of carrying someone else while flying.

-The dispute is solved.

-After years of the best childhood ever, Rhys’s mom declares that she’s raising her son as an Illyrian.

-Feyre and Rhys say their goodbyes, and when he’s finally gone it hurts

-They both write it off as distance from their best friend.

-For a few years, they remain pen pals.

-”Remember that savage, Cassian? We are starting to get along.”

-”My sister Nesta is becoming almost intolerable now. I miss your mom.”

-”My mother says hello. She misses you too. We have a new addition in our home. His name’s Azriel. He’s very quiet.”

-”I wish you could come and take me flying.”

-Slowly, they piddle out until one of these letters becomes the last.

-Feyre’s family loses their status, not to the starving devastation of ACOTAR, but enough so that they fall out with the High Lord.

-Rhys finds comfort in Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Amren. Feyre becomes a recluse, until the tale of the Merchant’s daughter and the High Lord’s son becomes an obsolete story.

-Feyre and Rhys try romantic relationships with others, but they always fall short.

-Years later, after the blood rite, Rhys returns from the camps.

-A large party is thrown in his honor, and neither looks for one another.  But, like a compass that always points North, somehow the two find each other.

-It’s as if they were spinning in circles for years, stumbling, trying to recover, until they smile at each other.

-The looks hits hard, only comparable to the instant when the world seems rightside-up again after all that turning.

-It’s a night like no other. Years have passed, but they recognize each other. Conversion is easy. They don’t sleep, talking all night.

-When he leaves again and the pain that faded all those years ago becomes incredibly strong once more, they know.

-Rhys doesn’t even question his duties before he hauls ass back to Velaris letting the tug in his chest drag him through the city.

-She sits alone at a café, slowly nursing a tea to ignore the ache growing in her chest.

-No thoughts pass through his mind as he dives down and collides at full force with the street outside the little fence that surrounds the café patio.

-A large cloud of dust forms. People scream and hide. Chaos ensues for fear of attack.

-Feyre stands calmly, throws a leg over the fence, and walks into the cloud.

-Rhys looks around like a wildcat for her.

-She sees him. She loses her breath. A cataclysmic force runs through both of them as the bond snaps fully at their eye contact.

-”There you are. I’ve been looking for you.”

-They’re in each other’s arms. They’re flying. They’re laughing. They’re kissing because oh gods it makes sense. All the years, the friendship, the pain. It makes sense.

-”I can’t believe it,” Rhys says, breathless in-between kisses, “it was you. All this time it was you.”

-More kissing, sloppy kisses as they grin like fools.

-”I’m glad it’s you,” Feyre whispers.

-He leans his forehead on hers. “Me, too. Darling. Me, too.”

Talon: Clawing to the Top

Alright, everyone, craziness went down today, but one of the things I’m most HYPED about is the confirmation that Talon is run by a council of leaders.

Most importantly, these leaders disagree with each other.

This is a big deal.  We know so little about Talon’s structure that it’s great to finally get some news on the internal hierarchy of the organization.  Some of the things I’ve pulled together are statements or implications made by Blizzard, some of it is just putting the pieces together, and a lot of it is pure speculation.  I’ll try to keep it clear what’s what.

To start off with, I’m going to be dropping my main hypothesis:

[Main Hypothesis]: the “global conflict” that Doomfist’s faction within Talon has been trying to spread is the Second Omnic Crisis.

[Subset Hypothesis]: the group within Talon that is trying to prevent this is none other than Sombra and Reaper.

As a sort of guide, when I say [Factual Lore] these are things you can double-check in Overwatch dev interviews, Chu’s GDC talk, heroes’ biographies, etc.  When I say [Implications], I’m talking about trying to read in between the lines, to assess what certain things are trying to hint at or indicate.  When I say [Hypothesis] I’m just speculating and constructing a discussion point.

We’re gonna go way, way far back, all the way to the beginning:

K but the foxes having to fly

It’s such a train wreck which is funny since they’re at an airport.

-Andrew and Aaron always swap passports as a joke
-Allison has at least five suitcases with her and hell if they think they’ll charge her extra for it.
-Renee does this weird thing where she stares blankly at people and freak them out.
-Matt is aggressively chewing gum and rattling off odds of how many planes crash per year followed by his rant on how planes just v a n i s h
-I should point out he has no fear of flying
-he’s just getting Nicky wound up
-Nicky is writing and rewriting his will every time Matt opens his mouth.
-no one is really sure if Andrew actually took out his knives before coming to the airport.
-if he has them, no one catches on.
-Neil gets dragged away since his passport is flagged by the FBI for security reasons and that means Dan has to chase him down
-actually Neil escaped airport security a while ago, man. He picked his way out of
the locked room and strolled out.
-Kevin is hung over and informing the elderly couple across from them about the potato famine and is going on forever, even after they run away.
-Aaron had to swear up and down that he wouldn’t start discussing the chemistry that was involved in explosives like he did the last time.
-Dan has to coral everyone up, and lord help her when they discover their gate has been switched from one end of the airport to the extreme opposite end and they have ten minutes to get there.
-Neil is wearing the weirdest sunglasses and hat he stole from Nicky to hide from security guards
-and they’re s p r i n t i n g
-Neil is leading, Dan is following them close behind the rest of them.
-she basically runs down Nicky when he starts panicking over ending up on an island like Lost. (She starts running on Matt’s heels for that.
-Allison is fucking crushing it, even in stiletto heels and an army of luggage.
-(Renee took a bag and Kevin was so hungover and confused why they were running that Allison convinced him that it was an exercise so our homeboy grabbed the two bags and sprinted.
-Andrew is literally only running because fuck if security guards catch Neil because Neil has his stash of candy and Andrew point blank will refuse to get on the plane if Neil isn’t there. (Only because of the candy though.)
-these guys barely make it on time
-security sees Neil from a distance but it’s to late, Matt hauls him into the plane when he starts flipping them off.
-they are the most disorganized chaos to ever hit first class.
-dan starts cursing Allison for thinking them all going to Paris was a good idea
-Renee is pretty content with her sprite soda and headphones while Nicky is holding her hand looking terrorized.
-Aaron and Kevin are going shot for shot
-Neil subtly hands over the bag of candy WHICH ALSO HAS ANDREW’S KNIVES over to Andrew
-Matt and Allison look far to pleased with themselves and Dan is done.

2016 was a really interesting year for a Korean movie / drama fan.

Some US companies like 20th century Fox and Warner Bros started to invest in local Korean films like The Wailing (곡성) and The Age of Shadows (밀정).

Meanwhile, Korean film companies jumped into the Korean TV drama industry. Descendents of the Sun (태양의 후예) was produced by NEW (Next Entertainemnt World which produced Train to Busan) and Dokkaebi / Goblin (도깨비) was produced by Studio Dragon, one of the affiliated companies of CJ E&M Group.

Most of all, Studio Dragon (CJ E&M) took over the TV drama company established by the writers of Six Flying Dragons. It means their new Sageuk drama (the sequel to Six Flying Dragons and Tree with Deep Roots) may be broadcasted by tvN channel which is also an affiliated company of CJ group. But it remains to be seen.
