fluent speakers

Listen I know we all love bilingual Lance and boy oh boy guess who’s here with some bilingual headcanons!!

•Lance used to speak fluent spanish as a child, but when he started going to public school, he just … Lost that ability.
•Lance can understand some words and phrases in spanish but doesn’t really know how to form sentences. (he knows all the cursewords and tries to use them as much as he can bc that’s Cool™)
•He can understand enough words to get the gist of what people are saying.
•Lance started to feel kind of detatched from his family since he couldn’t speak spanish and basically everyone else (save for the younger kids) could.
•His family doesn’t put any effort into teaching him spanish bc they want him to be more American than Hispanic (a sad truth that I unfortunately experienced)
•Lance starts to take spanish classes seriously when he gets to high school. He slowly learns how to form proper sentences, and he’s at the top of his class bc he wants to connect with his family language-wise. He tries hard, and grasps the language without any help from his fluent-spanish-speaking parents.
•One time, he had to do a project in spanish class, but he didn’t know how to form the sentence he wanted. So, he goes to his parents for help.
•Big mistake.
•His parents are from different regions of south america, so they speak different forms of spanish. Whatever he’s learning at school is. Not. The same.
•He had to go back and forth from his dad to his mom for one goddamn question like holy crow.
•"No, no! Your father is wrong! I speak PROPER spanish!“
-That was an actual quote from my mother it’s legit.
•His father ends up being right. At least in terms of School Spanish.
•Lance’s teacher ended up taking points away anyway bc she knew he wasn’t capable of speaking in such eloquent, complex spanish.
•He once went over his vocab list with his fam since he forgot his spanish dictionary at school. Another mistake. Don’t ask your different-spanish-speaking parents for translations when they’re in the same room.
•They spent more time arguing about the translation than actually translating.
•Mom: “Aficion? I’ve never heard that word in my life! It doesn’t exist!”
•"It means ceiling fan, mom.“
•M: “Oh! Then you mean ‘hincha’!”
•Dad: “Hincha?! Are you trying to teach our son slang?!”
•"Wait, that’s slang?!“
•"Well, ya-”
•D: “Aficion es the tiki tiki.”
•M: “No. El tiki tiki es la hincha!”
•They slowly seep into full spanish and Lance is watching on in amusement.
•He ends up texting his aunt about the right answer, and she tells him that it’s aficion.
•Mom loses the argument.
•He has a presentation in class for an oral test. He knows he has a great accent and great understanding of spanish, but when he goes up to speak, he can’t say anything.
•Everything comes out slow and stuttered, but he still gets an A+ bc his pronunciation is on point.
•There’s a non-hispanic/latinx kid in his class. They get straight A’s and speak faster than Lance. Lance is jealous of them. It’s not fair that a person who isn’t surrounded by latin culture can speak it so well, while he can’t.
•They’re the top 2 in the class, but Lance is always second. He’s always second in everything.
•Eventually, Lance learns enough Spanish to understand full sentences. He gets a giddiness in his chest when he can understand EXACTLY what is being said in spanish. He loves it.
•Even when his parents are scolding him in spanish, he tries his best not to smile bc he UNDERSTANDS!! •He tries to get his parents/family to communicate with him in Spanish more bc he’s so proud that he can FINALLY understand them. He feels connected to them again, and loves the feeling of embracing his heritage at last.
•Then … His family asks hin why he never talks back in spanish.
•Lance is still shy and insecure about his spanish, bc sometimes he makes mistakes. And sometimes, fluent speakers are not the nicest when it comes to that. He’s afraid they’ll make fun of him bc he’s still learning.
•He goes to a restaurant that has people who only speak spanish in it. He then has to order from the menu.
•He asks for a soda. When the waitress leaves, his entire family is beaming at him. He asks why.
•They gush about his perfect pronunciation and format. They’re proud of him. They had no idea he knew it so well.
•Lance is almost brought to tears bc his family is just as proud of him as he is - especially on something so important to him.
•He talks and laughs with his family at dinner again after that.
•When he gets in space, he tries to keep himself knowledgeable in spanish. He doesn’t want to forget again.
•He listens to old spanish radio shows and songs all of the time. He listens to sports, no matter which kind, in spanish.
•He tries to teach the other paladins Spanish. He grins when they start cussing under their breath in spanish. Sometimes, the paladins will just slip into it and they’ll forget that they’re speaking another language bc it’s so second-nature to them.
•But Lance notices, and it feels a little more like home.

Tips for when studying is the last thing you want to do!

1. Write out on sticky notes the name of objects in your room, then go ahead and stick them on everything. Next time you turn on your light, make yourself look (or at least glance) at the word. Next time you open your drawer, look at the note. Any time you turn on your lamp, your laptop charger or your speakers, you’ll always have that vocabulary there and you’ll learn each of them in no time.

2. Play the radio/podcasts or a Korean show for background noise. Most of us don’t like to sit and scroll through Facebook in total silence. I recommend 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다 (which is available on youtube!) as it is centred around children and any vocabulary you pick up will be helpful. Others include:

• 2 Days 1 Night

• Hello Counselor

• 이웃집 찰스

• Hello Baby

3. Write down phrases on flash cards. Break down the words. Some people have more success reading phrases on flash cards rather than just single vocabulary. Stick these in a place you’ll sit at often, or you could also stick them on items they pertain to just like in tip #1.

4. Just once a day, when you’re out and about or even just at home, search the dictionary for a word. Say you’re out eating, and you don’t know the word for “to order”. Whip out that phone, search it up and try to commit it to memory. One word a day is 365 words a year, and odds are you’ll pick up more than that anyway!

5. Google Play has a selection of multi-language books. Buy a Korean and English children’s book and try to read it (if you’re up to it). The English translation will always be there, so it’s less brain power for you to go and search up everything you don’t know! Plus, you might learn some small phrases in the process.

6. Watch Korean YouTubers. YouTube is fun to watch, so why not watch it in Korean?
- 영국남자 (Korean Englishman) is an English man who is great at Korean, he always has English and Korean subs on. By the end of a few episodes you’ll know what “ 남자답다” and “살아 있네!” Means!
- Pony’s Makeup is a great channel if you love makeup. You’ll pick up makeup related vocab and phrases, as well learn new techniques and styles.
- Maangchi is a Korean lady who teaches you how to cook Korean food. It’s mostly in English but she talks about Korean words sometimes.
- 꿀키 is another cooking channel, however there’s no talking, only the blissful sounds of soup boiling and onions frying! She puts small instructions on her videos in both English and Korean. Take notes!

7. Download a widget on your phone that gives you a new word every time you swipe to unlock. Simple, easy and there in your pocket.

8. Fill your social media with Korean. Follow Korean study blogs (though don’t rely on them 100% as most are run by non-fluent speakers), follow Korean daily vocab twitters and Facebook pages. Everything you see will be Korean and you’ll start to pick up on words that you see all the time.

9. Don’t feel discouraged if you haven’t studied for a week. Don’t feel like you’re the worst at Korean, or that you’re so far behind everyone else. Everyone learns differently and at different paces. Me, I’m competitive and need to absorb as much as is humanly possible in a short amount of time. Others stick to a schedule. Some learn stuff here and there. There is no right and wrong way to learn.
Do you.
Remember, just one word a day equals 365 a year. 2 words a day is even more!

I just realized how much pressure there must be this weekend especially on Namjoon’s shoulders. For all of them, of course, but with Namjoon being the only fluent English speaker in the group he will have to answer all the questions and translate back to the boys and explain certain things, hold speeches and discussions as the leader… I hope he will get some rest and do great out there 💜

Wanted to do this for a couple of days, but ofc I got distracted bc of the Shangri La in Canada Vancouver concert the other day :DDDDD so heckING STOKED anyways lol this is dedicated especially to @alltaetae who kinda gave me the idea for this! Hope it helps you hun 💞💞

I’ve been studying Korean independently for 5 years now–taught myself everything I know, with a bit of help from Rosetta Stone. (it helped with grammar but lawd its such a pain in the ass to use.) Mostly it was K-pop (of course) and a lot of trial and error. And I just love the language–especially the script–because it’s so unique and of course a complete 180 from the same boring latin script I’ve been stuck using for the past 16 years…and I wanted to share it with those kpop fans out there who really want to read Korean even if only a little. Even if you just want to at least see what the Korean title of Got7’s newest comeback is, (because 90% of the time the titles are completely different in English) or maybe you really want to get into the language more but you dont know where to start. Hands down, learning the script first is the best way to go. It’s also the easiest. Hangeul is actually one of the easiest written languages to learn in the world! So why not give it a try? My pics here aren’t super fancy or anything but I hope they are of use to some of you. ❤ I can also update them or add more if I left something out or made a mistake. I am NOT a fluent Korean speaker (or a Korean, for that matter), I am simply sharing my love for the language with the masses!

If you want to, you can post your korean words in the reply thingies here and I can mark them! 😊😊 (totally optional.)
Also, the words are written exactly as they would be in Hangeul, which is my some of them might look a little weird lol. Their consonants are actually a lot rougher than ours, so while we might write it as Kimchi with a K, they’re over there pronouncing it with a G, even though it sounds like a K. Yeah. Their consonants literally have no chill. 😂😂

Anywaayss~~ hope this is helpful to someone!! Have a fantastic day, everyone, and Happy Halloween!! 🎃 🎃 🎃

I’m a Korean heritage speaker and was more fluent in Korean than English as a child. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to visit Korea for several years and have been finding it harder to think and speak in Korean and I just realized a unique challenge for me is, thanks to linguistic imperialism, almost all of my family members who I used to speak strictly Korean with are now near-fluent English speakers. What’s even more upsetting is that so many native Korean words are being replaced with English to the extent that when you say Asian person, you can say 아시아 사람 (literally A-see-ya or Asia and then the Korean word for person) and basically everyone will know what you mean, even though there are other native Korean synonyms.

Linguistic imperialism is scary–it is stealing my mother tongue but scarier still is that entire generations are being raised bilingually. Korean children (and many others around the world) are being raised speaking Korean and English and while you might assume the more languages the better, having entire generations be raised with the expectation of speaking English necessarily conditions them to value Western culture and language at the expense of their own and warps their unique cultural modes of thinking and communicating.

as a non-native English speaker who’s fully fluent in both English and Spanish, i can tell you with the utmost honesty that regardless of how fluent i am in English when i’m excited it all tends to go over my head and even as a fluent speaker i find myself completely and utterly lost at times when my excitement is through the roof. don’t be nasty and rude about the people at harry’s show tonight.

most of them were probably screaming not because they didn’t respect him or what he was saying but because they probably understood very little or nothing at all of what he was saying because excitement tends to cloud a non-native’s speaker understanding very easily. this was made very clear when the crowd quieted down immediately after the traductor spoke.

so, bottom line is, don’t make assumptions about those fans because most weren’t screaming out of disrespect for harry or the topic of the manchester tragedy but because they weren’t fully aware of what was being said. please, take that into account before you say rude things about them

You know when people write about everyone forcing Lance to become the red paladin and losing himself? Have anyone else thought of the team going back to Earth after the war (or just after those events) and Lance’s family being horrified, asking the paladins “what did you do to our precious boy?!”

“WHAT  HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM?!” Lance’s mother, Esperanza, spat out, in shaky english, but with all the rage there.

“Mamá, its not a big deal- please don’t yell-”

“Lance, no seas estúpido. Te arruinaron, nuestro hermoso chico.” The team was confused by the soft sharp spanish that his father, Alberto, spoke. But they all picked on the estúpido that slipped its way in there. Shiro was about to comment on it, when Lance’s youngest brother, Edgar, spoke.

He stepped in front of his brother and raised a finger at Shiro, “You broke him! You broke our Lance! you made him like- like the red one!”

“Edgar,” Lance whispered, “está bien, no importa.”

Edgar spoke back to him in a rapid fire spanish no one could catch onto- Another one of Lance’s siblings, Eliza, stood up, charged at Keith and almost punched him. Fortunately Lance’s two brothers, Tony and Jaime, held her back- she snarled, “They changed him! Let me go- let me the fuck go! They took the best person on this earth and forced him to be like- like- like everything he wasn’t!”

Keith took a step back, and glanced at the boy who was still in the arms of his family. He wasn’t denying anything they said- holy shit. What did they do to him?

no seas estúpido. Te arruinaron, nuestro hermoso chico = Don’t be stupid. They ruined you, our beautiful boy.

está bien, no importa = its okay, its not important

Note; I am not a fluent spanish speaker, so any mistakes are my own. I tried, but please feel free to correct me if I did something wrong with it.

Allen Christopher Ivanov of Mukilteo, Washington was arrested after killing three teenagers at a party .  It is said that Ivanov had just had had a break up with one of the victims, Anna Bui.  Ivanov went and posted on Twitter shortly carrying out the shooting.  He seems to have hinted at his plans on Instagram as well.  Ivanov had posted a picture of his new assault rifle days prior with three bullets next to it.  He captioned it “You can’t run with me :(”
Some sources say he purchased an assault rifle weeks before the murders, others say just a week prior. Sources are making it seem as if the shooting wasn’t premeditated.  That after coming to a party where he saw his ex-girlfriend with another guy, Ivanov went to his car in a jealous rage and got his assault rifle.  Not knowing how to use it, he apparently read the manual before loading the magazine.
It’s also being reported that Ivanov reached out to a friend in Kentucky days prior warning them there would be a mass shooting.  Investigators have seen these text messages.
Ivanov claimed that he crept around the side of the house to hide and was seen by one of the male victims.  The man allegedly said “no” over and over.  Ivanov did not spare him.
He then went into the house and shot his ex-girlfriend Anna Bui twice.  He then shot another male.  Going onto the balcony of the master bedroom, he shot at two more males.  He sped away from the scene of the crime and was arrested about 100 miles away after being stopped for speeding.
The three murdered were identified as Anna Bui, Jordan Ebner, and Jake Long.  All three victims were 19.  One more male was injured.
Ivanov, a fluent Russian speaker, told investigators Anna Bui was the first girl he had ever kissed.  He worked at the Apple Store in the Genius Bar and graduated High School in 2015.
He is being held without bail awaiting trial.

Why Adrien is Pissing Me Off With Every New Episode - Riposte Season 2 Episode 5 Initial Overview - SPOILER ALERT

Let me just start off by saying Kagami is a great character and a formidable villain. Her design is beautiful and she’s incredibly humble. However. Her presence has now made me aware of a side of Adrien that makes me genuinely irritated. His “naive” side.

Adrien seems to suspect Kagami as Ladybug initially. As soon as he sees her face (and her ring) the pink sparkles in the background come up which signifies romantic interest (I think). Even after he finds out that Kagami isn’t Ladybug, he’s still captivated by Kagami. So why does this piss me off?

Welp. Because Adrien is giving mixed signals all over the place, and Marinette is my favorite character. He’s slow dancing with Marinette, making her presents, flirting with her as Chat Noir. Yet somehow she’s still “just a friend”. The amount of times he said “Marinette is just a good friend” in this episode made me want to rip my hair out. On the flip side, when she’s Ladybug he’s holding her hand, sniffing her, taking the fall for her, blowing her kisses (as Adrien).

In the Origins episode, we find out that the reason Adrien fell in love with Ladybug initially was due to her confidence, superhero prowess, her ability to fight, and her passion for justice. This has worried me from the beginning because we know that more miraculous holders will be coming, and any superhero can possess these qualities. I’m worried that Adrien is attracted to these qualities in a person rather than actually being in love with Ladybug (whereas I could argue that Marinette may actually be in love with Adrien).

Then we get introduced to Kagami who is a better fighter than Ladybug, just as passionate, and maybe even a bit more confident. She’s checking off all the points on Adrien’s list (and let’s not forget his love for dark hair and bright eyes).

There was a moment at the end where Kagami and Adrien are shaking hands and gazing at each other like Marinette and Adrien usually do, and I started really liking Kagami while also becoming increasingly annoyed with Adrien. Especially with the added factor that Marinette saw the whole interaction.

Innocent or not, Adrien is leading Marinette on with his actions. Even though he claims she’s just a friend he acts like she’s more (toward Ladybug and Marinette). I can’t believe I am saying this, but when Marinette got upset with Adrien’s “just a good friend” comment, I wanted her to give up on him and move on. As Ladybug she’s always rejecting Chat Noir because she’s in love with Adrien. She’s even stated that she would consider Chat Noir, but she’s completely committed to Adrien - her actions and words match up. At this point, I’m so ready to meet Luka. Maybe when Marinette’s no longer an option Adrien will wake the hell up.

All I need from Adrien is a verbal admittance that he may like more than one girl. And I don’t care if that’s Ladybug and Kagami or Ladybug and Marinette or Marinette and Ladybug and Kagami - I just want him to stop being so oblivious to his own feelings. I 100% blame his parents for this emotional stagnancy, but that’s another conversation.

Other noteworthy things:

1. Gabriel is a horrible fucking person. Worst Father ever, I swear. He knows Kagami is after Adrien and still spurs her on. Have some concern for your son Gabriel ugh. (Edit: Yes I know he initially tried to divert Riposte’s attention, but since I know he can take away powers and such, I still think he’s not a good Father).

2. Marinette “beats” Adrien in fencing practice, and I’m 88% sure he was going easy on her (I’m not a fluent French speaker). Why? Adrien beats Kagami (a professional), but Ladybug has extreme difficulty fighting Kagami. Though, this could be because Kagami had extra powers and Ladybug isn’t confident in her fencing skills. (Edit: Nope I just rewatched and Marinette did legitimately get two points on him. Kagami and Adrien have a conversation on how one point from an amateur doesn’t make Kagami, not a champion).

3. Chat Noir was 100% needed in this episode, and can I just say that these past two episodes he has really stepped up. I really felt like Ladybug needed him and I was more than impressed with his contribution. Also, Chat Noir was super successful with hiding his injured ankle, I’m really proud of him (though I’m pretty sure Ladybug fixed it with her powers).

4. I said it once, but it’s worth mentioning again, Kagami is just wonderful. Her design is beautiful, she’s not a bitch or a liar. I still don’t want her to get with Adrien AT ALL, but I look forward to seeing her in future episodes. Hopefully, she’s not a recurring villain (I kind of got that vibe considering how crazy strong she was).

5. Do Tikki and Plagg know the identities of both Chat Noir and Ladybug? I’m so suspicious of them…

6. The Ladrien was cute but tainted by my newfound aggression toward Adrien “She’s Just a Friend” Agreste. The indirect kisses were cute. Oh, and the Adrien saving Ladybug moment in which he twisted his ankle was also cute. It was all cute.

Let me know what you think, and remember: just two/three more episodes until The Battle of the Queens; AKA Chloe somehow obtaining a miraculous.

Mob Psycho 100 Chapter 100.5 English translation

I got a bit impatient so I did my own quick translation while waiting on the usual one. To be taken with a grain of salt since my Japanese level is good enough to comprehend the main meaning but I might have missed a nuance here or there.

(If any fluent speakers want to correct anything, feel free to!)

Also I’m not a scanlator so I hope you’ll be okay with raw pages + translated text afterwards.

‘You don’t even speak Welsh.’

They’re lying on a picnic blanket in the back garden, soaking up what they can of the sunshine before summer comes to a close and the overcast skies roll back in. Robert is on his back. Aaron is on his front. A collection of empty beer bottles lay abandoned on the grass around them; the sign of a long Sunday afternoon well spent.

‘I follow a word of the day twitter,’ Robert says.

‘Of course you do. You complete geek.’

‘I’m ignoring that,’ Robert says. ‘It’s a real thing. Cwtch. With a W instead of a U because Welsh vowels are weird.’

‘And you’re telling me the Welsh word for cuddle because…’

‘It doesn’t mean cuddle,’ Robert says, frowning in a way that makes Aaron want to kiss his forehead. ‘It can’t be translated into English. It means like, cuddle, but more protective?’

‘You’re a proper wordsmith you,’ Aaron says, rolling his eyes.

‘Look, c’mere. I’ll show you. Put your head on my chest,’ Robert says, patting the space above his heart.

Aaron laughs. ‘Are you asking me to come cuddle?’

‘No,’ Robert says, his tone dead serious. ‘I’m asking you to come cwtch.’

Aaron sighs dramatically and shifts so he’s lying with his head on Robert’s chest, one of his hands curled in the front of his shirt. Robert wraps his arms around him, resting his cheek on the top of his head. Aaron can’t help but smile, closing his eyes and listening to the sound of Robert’s steady breathing.

‘See,’ Robert says, like he’s proved a point.

Aaron doesn’t argue. He’ll let his husband have this one. It’s a small price to pay for a moment as perfect as this.

want to advance your fluency in your target language?

If you’re frustrated by your progress in your target language, this could be a great way to get out of your rut and help you improve! A little while ago I found a really app where you can talk to real native speakers of your target language through text, or even voice and video calls to help with your fluency! I highly recommend this app as a language learning tool for anyone who can’t access native speakers easily (because you can access so many here and also because there are so many cool features on the app)!

There are translation, voice-to-text, and correction tools you can use which add another layer of helpfulness to messaging, and you can also create groups for a social learning experience. You can also filter people you see and the people who see you be demographics, It’s also a really developed app, with over 7 million users and more than 150 languages available! You can filter for people who match your skills and fluency needs, and then practice your skills with them.

I 100% recommend HelloTalk especially if you are self studying a language, as you might not be getting the amount of exposure you need to fluent speakers. Definitely check it out HERE, and you can add it to your list of essential language apps!

Don't EVER make fun of:

To all the bilinguals out there, how did you become fluent in your target language?
I think I’m almost fluent in English because I can read complicated books, watch movies/ YouTube without subtitles and I have no problem carrying a conversation or writing a text in English.
Yet I still think that I don’t write and speak like a native English speaker, and all I write and say seems a bit unnatural…
I really want to be able to express myself like a native but I don’t know what I can do to get to this level (beside keeping practicing with the same methods^^)
Anyone has any tips to share?

He would be very understanding and would try his best to conversate with you by not using korean. If you wanted, he could also help you learn it way faster.

This is where his confidence would start to deflate. He’d probably end up doing too much research on your language and try to talk to you every once in a while.

Like Mark, I doubt Jackson would have any trouble with this. If you were willig, he would like lessons on your language, and he would give you classes on korean.

He’d be a little intimidated, but would never show it. Instead, he still try to talk to you as best as he can.
