hardcover books are really pretty, but paperbacks definitely have them beat for readability/portability. they also feel more approachable, and I like that well-loved paperbacks show wear.
14. alphabetical shelves or colour coordinated
I don’t do either – my shelves at school are carefully organized by genre, my shelves at home are barely organized at all, except that books by single authors are grouped. those shelves are ikea and are set so that each shelf has a different height, so it’s really just a matter of trying to get everything to fit (though I also have several piles on my floor).
bookmarks or random objects to mark your page
I rarely use bookmarks, I normally do the flip back until I find where I left off thing, so if I’m marking my page it’s because I’m in one of my “I own dozens of bookmarks I should use one goddammit” phases.
