The doors

The Thursday afternoon stroll home from art class at the Fleisher Memorial occurs in a gentle daze, in contrast to the mild anxiety and self-doubt that accompany the journey there. Eccentric architecture is a feature of Queen Village, home to the Fleisher (the oldest free community art school in America), like the “door to nowhere” on Catharine Street. On the way down to class its vibe seems ominous, but after two hours of painting it has somehow acquired the promise of a dream.
