K-Pop Group BTS Reveals Its Biggest Beauty Secrets for Glowing Skin

Last month, BTS, a K-Pop group from Seoul, cemented itself in American pop culture by winning the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards. The second the boy band hit the magenta red carpet, thousands were exposed to the wonders of K-Pop. Since then, people have been quick to call BTS, which is short for Bangtan Sonyeondan (or Bulletproof Boy Scouts in English), the One Direction of South Korea. However, that’s just an easy way to give them some context. In reality, BTS is actually completely different. Why? The seven-piece group’s performances are complete with flawless choreography, expert rapping, high-fashion looks, and insanely catchy vocals. Oh yeah, and they look damn good while doing so.

No matter where BTS is, their skin is forever smooth and has an enviable glow to it. Their eyes are typically adorned with a subtle smoky eye look, which both Jin and Jimin told me is their favorite part of wearing makeup. Their lips always have that popsicle-stained look that everyone’s been craving lately. Their hair colors are constantly changing, too. In 2017 alone, Jimin’s hair has been bubblegum pink, silver, platinum blonde, sandy blonde, and caramel brown. If they had to choose just one shade, though, Rap Monster tells Allure that he prefers “ash gray and ash blue because these complement my skin tone well.” Agreed. Also, Suga added that his favorite hair color is blonde because “I just need to de-color and that’s it.”

The beauty aspect of BTS’s fame alone separates them from the likes of One Direction, the Jonas Brothers, and the Backstreet Boys. And their legions of fans, lovingly called A.R.M.Y., live for it. YouTube is filled with makeup tutorials inspired by looks from BTS’s music videos. A whole Tumblr account called Dewy Bangtan is even devoted to tracking down the beauty products BTS uses based on screenshots from behind-the-scenes videos.

If the names I mentioned above didn’t ring any bells, let me give you a quick summary of each of the seven members of BTS.

Jin

At 24, Jin is the oldest member of BTS, but he doesn’t act like it. He has a very specific skin care-related reason for that. In a recent video, he said, “I have a motto of my life, ‘If you behave young, your face becomes young, too.’” Noted. His good looks went viral after the Billboard Awards. On Twitter, he was called the “third one from the left”, accompanied by dozens of heart-eye emojis. His response? He’s “worldwide handsome.”

Suga

Many will identify with Suga, one of the group’s rappers, on a spiritual level, as I do. When he isn’t working his ass off producing, writing, and composing songs, he just likes to lay. Same. Just as his hair color preference suggests, he’s the most low-maintenance of the Bangtan Boys as far as beauty routines goes. He’s basically a granddad trapped in a 24-year-old’s body.

V

V’s interests lie in the finer things in life like Gucci, Van Gogh, and photography. The 21-year-old also makes some of the most hilarious facial expressions and has the most velvety voice in BTS. Some consider him to be the most handsome in the group, but I’ll let you decide.

Jimin

Jimin is the king of selfies. BTS’s Twitter is filled with evidence of this statement. In their music videos, you can pick him out by his sharp dance moves. In a group photos, you can pick him out by his seriously adorable baby face. Don’t let it fool you — he’s not the youngest. He’s 21. And if anyone was wondering, he’s what K-Pop fans call my “bias,” aka my favorite. His pink hair sealed the deal for me.

Jungkook

Ok, now it’s time to talk about the youngest member of BTS. Jungkook, 19, is a classic, hard-working millennial. He can do everything, including sing (in English), dance, and rap, and do it all incredibly well. When not suited-up in a dress shirt or velvet bomber jacket on stage, you can catch him wearing a white T-shirt and Timberlands.

Rap Monster

Meet the leader of the group. BTS was literally built around the 22-year-old. As you probably could have guessed, Rap Monster, well, raps. He’s also BTS’s mouthpiece. Fluent in English, he usually takes the lead in stateside interviews. (Watching Friends helped him learn the language.) He has a habit of winking in photo shoot and making people across the world melt. Cringe-worthy hairstyles from BTS’s debut in 2013 aside, Rap Monster has some of the best looks of BTS.

J-Hope

I’m convinced J-Hope’s ever-positive personality is the true secret behind his glowing skin. (More on his actual secrets later.) Also 22, he’s like BTS’s portable charger, giving them (and fans) the energy and encouragement. Watching him dance will give you strength, too. Trust. He’s s-o g-o-o-d.

Now that we’re all on the same page, here’s the best part: BTS took a break from their massive world tour, which has made stops in the US, Australia, and Brazil, to chat with me about their skin care routines. Yup, you’re about to find out some of their secrets.

Why is it important to you to take good care of your skin?

Jin: “Skin is what completes my appearance. I value my looks very much, so it’s equally important to take good care of my skin — that’s a pivotal part of my face.”

J-Hope: “Taking good care of your skin is the No.1 rule for all celebs. I get to meet a lot of fans face-to-face at fan meetings and similar events, and I’d like to look my best for them.”

What’s your biggest skin concern?

Rap Monster: “My skin is dry most of the time, and my biggest concern is keeping it [moisturized]. I get zits from time to time and that concerns me as well.”

Jungkook: “I get pimples sometimes, and it’s very stressful.”

You guys travel a lot. Do you do any skin-care treatments while you’re on the plane to keep your skin from freaking out?

V: “On the plane, I dampen cotton pads with toner and put on lotion twice as much.”

Jimin: “I don’t really do anything extra special for my skin on the plane, but I try to drink as much water as possible.”

What are some of your favorite beauty products?

V: “I’ve been looking for my absolute favorite beauty product for a long time because my skin becomes dry and oily relatively fast. I haven’t found the right one, but I’m not giving up! Any recommendations?”

What is your skin routine like?

J-Hope: “[In the morning, I use] toner and face cream. [At night, the steps are] toner, essence, acne care, lotion, cream.”

Jungkook: “Toner and cream for night and morning routine.”

A lot of people find skin care routines to be a form of self care. Do you agree?

Rap Monster: “I totally agree. My favorite brand is Mediheal, and it has a variety of sheet masks you can choose from after a long day of work.”

Jimin: “I do agree because I try to clear my mind by cleansing my face after performances.”

Do you have any bad skin care habits?

Suga: “My bad habit is that I don’t take care of my skin.”

V: “I don’t particularly have a bad habit, but I’m worried about my skin having lack of elasticity. How can I prevent this?”

Are there any Korean beauty trends that you particularly love?

Jin: “I love sheet masks. I try to put them on whenever I feel my skin is dry and exposed too much to the sun. They help me make up for lost moisture and brighten my skin.”

Do you have any go-to skin care tips for clear, glowing skin?

J-Hope: “I try to go to the dermatologist when I have some free time after work.”

Jungkook: “I wish I had one! Let me know, and I’ll try.”

Zen headcanon

pls tell me this hasn’t been done before

He knows every single Britney Spears song.

He’s a huge mega fan and Seven teases him ALL THE TIME. Mostly because one time the RFA decided to throw a Halloween party and Zen dressed up as Britney from the Baby One More Time video (complete with his rattail braided into pigtails) and insisted on singing every Britney song that was on the karaoke machine with flawless choreography & dancing.

He owns all of the merch, has met her before (he claims she flirted with him???), and speaks fluently in her song lyrics. If Zen gets mad at Jumin, he says something like “WHOA ZEN LET’S NOT PULL A 2007 BRITNEY HERE” and Zen’s even angrier because How Dare He Disrespect His Iconic Queen. Blocked. Reported. Unfriended.

okay so let’s just recap the obvious that hoseok is really shining this era (but let’s be honest, he shines every era):

  • he did the intro for this album
  • along with a FLAWLESS choreography video
  • his solo song, MAMA, is unique and catchy. yet the lyrics are about his aspiring dream to be a dancer and his mom provided the support and encouragement for him to be who he is today
  • he helped write and produce for most of the songs on the album
  • he got the most parts in their title track ‘피 땀 눈물 (Blood Sweat & Tears)’

anyways stan jung hoseok

The Best Performances of the BET Awards 2017, Ranked

The 2017 BET Awards tapped every single emotion possible during its three-hour show on Sunday (June 25).

Avid viewers soaked in every second of nostalgia courtesy of prominent ‘90s acts, including New Edition, Xscape, and Mary J Blige. Then, they were entranced by the flawless choreography of Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, and Big Sean. Everywhere you turned, there was a performance not to be missed, whether it was good or grating.

Take a look at which performances proved to be the best of the night below.

14. Trey Songz

Trey Songz kicked things off with his sensual record “Nobody Else But You.” Then, the Virginia staple shifted moods and lost control when he jumped into his sex-laden single “Animal.” As he growled and snarled throughout the song, Songz's ambitious attempt for a titillating experience fell flat.

13. SZA

Though SZA's performance had a rough start due to mic troubles, TDE's songbird flourished during her performances of “Love Galore” and “The Weekend.” For SZA, she exuded the patience needed to survive BET’s blunder and made it through her set with no difficulty at all.

12. DJ Khaled

With a yacht named after his son Asahd on stage, DJ Khaled performed his star-studded single “I’m the One" with Lil’ Wayne, Chance the Rapper and Quavo. Even though Justin Bieber wasn’t available, Khaled made sure the performance was fun-filled, as he carried the executive producer of his latest offering Grateful, Asahd, across his chest. "This my best work. I did it for my son,” yelled Khaled.

11. French Montana

After being wowed by the heartfelt story of the Triplets Ghetto Kids, French Montana felt compelled to shoot his “Unforgettable” video with Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee in Uganda. Montana continued his altruism at the BET Awards when he brought out the Triplet Ghetto Kids for his performance. As they feverishly danced away, Montana, with a little Ugandan girl in tow, made sure that Uganda had a special place at last night’s festivities. He also plugged the release date for his new album Jungle Rules, once he concluded his set. The album will drop July 14.

10. Migos

Once Quavo finished assisting Post Malone on their autotune-heavy collaboration “Congratulations,” the front man for Migos rallied his Atlanta troops to perform “T-Shirt” and “Bad and Boujee.” As the crowd recited every word to their Billboard Hot 100 No.1 single, the rap triumvirate had the audience twerking and dancing all throughout their fiery set.

9. Chris Brown

Being the consummate stage professional that he is, Chris Brown mesmerized viewers with his fancy footwork. First, he cradled the crowd gently to his slow-winding track “Privacy,” before delivering a full-fledged dance-fest courtesy of his army of dancers. To bolster the performance, Gucci Mane graced the stage to rap his verse to Brown’s “Party."

8. Big Sean

Even without all the glitz and glamor on stage, Big Sean was able to execute his medley of "Sacrifices, "Moves” and “Bounce Back” with precision. On “Bounce Back,” Sean received some aide from his dancers, who dressed exactly like him and duplicated his “moves” to a tee. Once again, Sean showed that he very well can survive as a one-man band.

7. Xscape

The '90s quartet Xscape injected nostalgia onto the BET Awards when they returned after an 18-year hiatus. Kandy, Tiny, LaTocha and Tamika performed a slew of classics including “Understanding,” “Who Can I Run To” and "Just Kickin’ It.“

6. Future / Kendrick Lamar

On the heels of his Future HNDRXX Tour, Future, with his team of masked dancers, performed his scintillating single "Mask Off.” Future surprised the crowd when he tapped Kendrick Lamar on his home turf of California to rap his verse from the remix. To no one’s surprise, Lamar unleashed his verse with gusto.

5. Tamar Braxton

Though Tamar Braxton might have not been the biggest draw on the card, the seasoned singer almost stole the show with her spellbinding performance of “My Man.” With no performance track underneath her vocals to support her, Braxton sang from the bottom of heart and crushed every single note that came along her way.

4. Maxwell

After Chance the Rapper won the crowd over with his rousing acceptance speech for BET’s Humanitarian Award, Maxwell sang an appropriate song for the occasion in “Gods.” Like Tamar Braxton and Mary J Blige, Maxwell matched his contemporaries’ set with an intoxicating performance. At one point, the “Pretty Wings” singer was so into his performance that he laid down on the middle of stage and continued to sing.

3. Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars opened up the BET Awards with a sizzling performance of “Perm.” Donning a Hooligan baseball jersey, the 24K Magic crooner showcased his versatility with his dance moves, stage presence, and playful quips. “You can’t film and dance at the same time,” said Mars to the cameraman. The real MVPs were Mars’ band The Hooligans. Not only did they seamlessly breeze through their choreography, they did it while playing their instruments as well.

2. Mary. J Blige

From the onset, Mary J. Blige delivered a scathing message to her ex-husband Kendu Issacs on “Set Me Free." Heartbroken by their muddy fallout, Blige performed the new version of her empowering single "Love Yourself.” Sans Kanye West, Mary J Blige tapped A$AP Rocky as she resiliently wore her heart on her sleeves throughout the performance.

1. New Edition

The newly named recipients of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award had several tricks up their sleeves. First, the cast of BET's New Edition Story ran through the storied group’s bag of classics. From "Candy Girl,“ to Johnny Gill's "My, My, My,” to Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative,” everything was covered. Afterwards, the real New Edition performed a medley of hits including “Mr Telephone Man,” “If It Isn’t Love," and "Can’t You Stand the Rain.”

ok but can we just talk about how dedicated Infinite are to their performances? there was a performance of ‘Sonagi’ they did that had no noticeable mistakes but they weren’t 99% in sync as usual... afterwards they apologised profusely for their ‘bad performance’ because they had just learned the choreo that morning... THAT MORNING... Infinite performed almost flawlessly live with choreo they just learned that morning...

They performed singing live and with virtually flawless choreography (and they were mostly in sync, it was only a stray member or two that was off during some verses) and yet they still apologised because they thought they were lacking and didn’t want to disappoint Inspirits.

You don’t just learn choreography (especially the Infinite kind) in a single morning, it’s not something that anyone can just do, they trained hard for years and they never stopped improving themselves (still in awe over 18 hours a day of pre-debut dance practice everyday) which was why they were able to pull off something amazing like this so last minute. These boys are just so amazingly dedicated and they deserve the world.

here’s the performance if anyone’s interested, it was Music Bank 140613
  • What I say: I like topp dogg
  • What I mean: listen to me. Amadeus is the most brilliant concept album of all time. The Mozart samples blend seamlessly with the feverish modern music. Listen to me...you piece of shit...the rivalry between mozart and salieri is a perfect metaphor for a rookie group trying to rise through the ranks and gain recognition. Everything about this concept, down to the choreography, is flawless. Hansol is behind bjoo from start to finish, just like salieri was behind Mozart. Get out of my face.

ㅡ★ The sales team’s experienced member, employee Cha Hak Yeon. He is the leader (?) of ‘VIXX ©’s company group [VIXX]. As he takes care of choreography and vocals, he is the only one in the team that has worked (?) somewhere else. You can see his confident charms in the way he ranks his foreign and computer skills above average and picking himself at #1 at all points except in aegyo. However, you can see how warm he is just like from his ‘niece/nephew fool’ nickname as he exchanges voice messages with his nieces and nephews. But now we’re curious. He says his strong point is his honesty but his economic ability inside his wallet is a secret~

ㅡ★ The business team’s new employee, Jung Taek Woon. Because of his chic personality that’s the opposite of his team member Cha Hak Yeon, he avoids him often, but they are best friends for life who have been friends longer than anyone else. Even though you can never tell what he’s thinking, you can see obviously what he’s into from his clear, no-joke answers. Singing, working on songs. He knows to work hard at what he’s likes, so we’re curious as to see what his next project is^^ (+One more! What happened with employee Lee Jaw Hwan …///)
