K-Pop Group BTS Reveals Its Biggest Beauty Secrets for Glowing Skin

Last month, BTS, a K-Pop group from Seoul, cemented itself in American pop culture by winning the Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards. The second the boy band hit the magenta red carpet, thousands were exposed to the wonders of K-Pop. Since then, people have been quick to call BTS, which is short for Bangtan Sonyeondan (or Bulletproof Boy Scouts in English), the One Direction of South Korea. However, that’s just an easy way to give them some context. In reality, BTS is actually completely different. Why? The seven-piece group’s performances are complete with flawless choreography, expert rapping, high-fashion looks, and insanely catchy vocals. Oh yeah, and they look damn good while doing so.

No matter where BTS is, their skin is forever smooth and has an enviable glow to it. Their eyes are typically adorned with a subtle smoky eye look, which both Jin and Jimin told me is their favorite part of wearing makeup. Their lips always have that popsicle-stained look that everyone’s been craving lately. Their hair colors are constantly changing, too. In 2017 alone, Jimin’s hair has been bubblegum pink, silver, platinum blonde, sandy blonde, and caramel brown. If they had to choose just one shade, though, Rap Monster tells Allure that he prefers “ash gray and ash blue because these complement my skin tone well.” Agreed. Also, Suga added that his favorite hair color is blonde because “I just need to de-color and that’s it.”

The beauty aspect of BTS’s fame alone separates them from the likes of One Direction, the Jonas Brothers, and the Backstreet Boys. And their legions of fans, lovingly called A.R.M.Y., live for it. YouTube is filled with makeup tutorials inspired by looks from BTS’s music videos. A whole Tumblr account called Dewy Bangtan is even devoted to tracking down the beauty products BTS uses based on screenshots from behind-the-scenes videos.

If the names I mentioned above didn’t ring any bells, let me give you a quick summary of each of the seven members of BTS.

Jin

At 24, Jin is the oldest member of BTS, but he doesn’t act like it. He has a very specific skin care-related reason for that. In a recent video, he said, “I have a motto of my life, ‘If you behave young, your face becomes young, too.’” Noted. His good looks went viral after the Billboard Awards. On Twitter, he was called the “third one from the left”, accompanied by dozens of heart-eye emojis. His response? He’s “worldwide handsome.”

Suga

Many will identify with Suga, one of the group’s rappers, on a spiritual level, as I do. When he isn’t working his ass off producing, writing, and composing songs, he just likes to lay. Same. Just as his hair color preference suggests, he’s the most low-maintenance of the Bangtan Boys as far as beauty routines goes. He’s basically a granddad trapped in a 24-year-old’s body.

V

V’s interests lie in the finer things in life like Gucci, Van Gogh, and photography. The 21-year-old also makes some of the most hilarious facial expressions and has the most velvety voice in BTS. Some consider him to be the most handsome in the group, but I’ll let you decide.

Jimin

Jimin is the king of selfies. BTS’s Twitter is filled with evidence of this statement. In their music videos, you can pick him out by his sharp dance moves. In a group photos, you can pick him out by his seriously adorable baby face. Don’t let it fool you — he’s not the youngest. He’s 21. And if anyone was wondering, he’s what K-Pop fans call my “bias,” aka my favorite. His pink hair sealed the deal for me.

Jungkook

Ok, now it’s time to talk about the youngest member of BTS. Jungkook, 19, is a classic, hard-working millennial. He can do everything, including sing (in English), dance, and rap, and do it all incredibly well. When not suited-up in a dress shirt or velvet bomber jacket on stage, you can catch him wearing a white T-shirt and Timberlands.

Rap Monster

Meet the leader of the group. BTS was literally built around the 22-year-old. As you probably could have guessed, Rap Monster, well, raps. He’s also BTS’s mouthpiece. Fluent in English, he usually takes the lead in stateside interviews. (Watching Friends helped him learn the language.) He has a habit of winking in photo shoot and making people across the world melt. Cringe-worthy hairstyles from BTS’s debut in 2013 aside, Rap Monster has some of the best looks of BTS.

J-Hope

I’m convinced J-Hope’s ever-positive personality is the true secret behind his glowing skin. (More on his actual secrets later.) Also 22, he’s like BTS’s portable charger, giving them (and fans) the energy and encouragement. Watching him dance will give you strength, too. Trust. He’s s-o g-o-o-d.

Now that we’re all on the same page, here’s the best part: BTS took a break from their massive world tour, which has made stops in the US, Australia, and Brazil, to chat with me about their skin care routines. Yup, you’re about to find out some of their secrets.

Why is it important to you to take good care of your skin?

Jin: “Skin is what completes my appearance. I value my looks very much, so it’s equally important to take good care of my skin — that’s a pivotal part of my face.”

J-Hope: “Taking good care of your skin is the No.1 rule for all celebs. I get to meet a lot of fans face-to-face at fan meetings and similar events, and I’d like to look my best for them.”

What’s your biggest skin concern?

Rap Monster: “My skin is dry most of the time, and my biggest concern is keeping it [moisturized]. I get zits from time to time and that concerns me as well.”

Jungkook: “I get pimples sometimes, and it’s very stressful.”

You guys travel a lot. Do you do any skin-care treatments while you’re on the plane to keep your skin from freaking out?

V: “On the plane, I dampen cotton pads with toner and put on lotion twice as much.”

Jimin: “I don’t really do anything extra special for my skin on the plane, but I try to drink as much water as possible.”

What are some of your favorite beauty products?

V: “I’ve been looking for my absolute favorite beauty product for a long time because my skin becomes dry and oily relatively fast. I haven’t found the right one, but I’m not giving up! Any recommendations?”

What is your skin routine like?

J-Hope: “[In the morning, I use] toner and face cream. [At night, the steps are] toner, essence, acne care, lotion, cream.”

Jungkook: “Toner and cream for night and morning routine.”

A lot of people find skin care routines to be a form of self care. Do you agree?

Rap Monster: “I totally agree. My favorite brand is Mediheal, and it has a variety of sheet masks you can choose from after a long day of work.”

Jimin: “I do agree because I try to clear my mind by cleansing my face after performances.”

Do you have any bad skin care habits?

Suga: “My bad habit is that I don’t take care of my skin.”

V: “I don’t particularly have a bad habit, but I’m worried about my skin having lack of elasticity. How can I prevent this?”

Are there any Korean beauty trends that you particularly love?

Jin: “I love sheet masks. I try to put them on whenever I feel my skin is dry and exposed too much to the sun. They help me make up for lost moisture and brighten my skin.”

Do you have any go-to skin care tips for clear, glowing skin?

J-Hope: “I try to go to the dermatologist when I have some free time after work.”

Jungkook: “I wish I had one! Let me know, and I’ll try.”

ok but can we just talk about how dedicated Infinite are to their performances? there was a performance of ‘Sonagi’ they did that had no noticeable mistakes but they weren’t 99% in sync as usual... afterwards they apologised profusely for their ‘bad performance’ because they had just learned the choreo that morning... THAT MORNING... Infinite performed almost flawlessly live with choreo they just learned that morning...

They performed singing live and with virtually flawless choreography (and they were mostly in sync, it was only a stray member or two that was off during some verses) and yet they still apologised because they thought they were lacking and didn’t want to disappoint Inspirits.

You don’t just learn choreography (especially the Infinite kind) in a single morning, it’s not something that anyone can just do, they trained hard for years and they never stopped improving themselves (still in awe over 18 hours a day of pre-debut dance practice everyday) which was why they were able to pull off something amazing like this so last minute. These boys are just so amazingly dedicated and they deserve the world.

Song of the Day - May 19, 2017

VIXX -  도원경(桃源境)

[M] VIXX is back and I have to say I have been anticipating this comeback since it was announced. The teasers drove me crazy and the highlight medley through me over the top! Now that Shangri-La is released I am beside myself excited and impressed. Everything about this release is absolutely amazing. The video is so well done, the outfits so fitting, choreography flawless and the song amazing. VIXX had managed to take an odd concept and completely own it. I am really loving every aspect of Shangri-La and I honestly have to say this is one of my favourite VIXX comebacks they have done recently. I am impressed at how many liens Hyuk and Hongbin both got and how amazing N was in this as well. Ken and Leo were both amazingly stunning vocally and Ravi as always rocked his rap in a way that worked so well with the song. The guys managed to pull off a stunning and strong comeback. I am so excited to see what VIXX will do this year.

[S] Can I just say.. THIS VIDEO IS STUNNING! Not only are VIXX finer than ever in those mature outfits who knew those men could make fans look so sexy. Well I mean let’s be honest I knew if anyone would be able making something as a fan ooze sex appeal it was going to be VIXX.

As for the song I cannot say it is my favorite that they have released but is not bad by any means. I like the chill vibe to the song more and more with each listen and I find my self listening to the song often. I really need to make time to fully get into mini and listen to all the songs

[C] VIXX has done it again holy crap. I absolutely love everything about this, the song, the music video, the choreography the fans are awesome! I’m not going to lie though, on the first listen I was really expecting more of a beat drop in the chorus so I was kind of disappointed there wasn’t more there just because of the build up to it but after listening to it on repeat these past couple of days I’ve really fallen in love with the chorus. I need a choreography version of this stat because I love the fans it just makes the choreo look so much better than it already does. Of course it’s VIXX so their dancing is already amazing but damn! Boy does VIXX know how to do concepts though, everything about this is just beautiful. And Hyuk! He has so many lines! His voice really suits this track. I really could just go on about everything in this video but I’ll stop or this will be really long (Shut up it already is).

[T] I’m not totally sold on the song yet, it’s still only so-so for me, but this music video is amazing. The concept they went for is beautiful and not something I’ve seen done a lot before, which is surprising since it’s such a visually appealing concept. VIXX pulls this off extremely well and though it’s not a dark concept, I still love this. I’m still gonna give the song some more time to grow on me, but even if it doesn’t I’ll happily keep watching this music video and cry at how pretty it is. It just goes to show, there are still some relatively unique concepts out there. I’d love to see some more concepts that aren’t overly done in K-pop like this.

  • What I say: I like topp dogg
  • What I mean: listen to me. Amadeus is the most brilliant concept album of all time. The Mozart samples blend seamlessly with the feverish modern music. Listen to me...you piece of shit...the rivalry between mozart and salieri is a perfect metaphor for a rookie group trying to rise through the ranks and gain recognition. Everything about this concept, down to the choreography, is flawless. Hansol is behind bjoo from start to finish, just like salieri was behind Mozart. Get out of my face.

I got the amazing opportunity to go backstage and meet Taylor Swift, and decided to bring my friend Maggie along, last Saturday at her Detroit show. After much thought we came up with a cute version of Welcome to New York where we changed the lyrics to say Welcome to Detroit.

Before the show we spent a lot of time practicing it. We arrived, completely out of breath, to where the meet and greet was and we ended up doing a lot of waiting. We got to see graffiti artwork done by a Detroit artist in honour of Taylor.

We began to practice our song for Taylor next to the artwork. When we got to the meet and greet our ukulele was confiscated and we were told we could not do our performance for Taylor. We were very sad to hear this but we kept our spirits up and were still excited to meet her.

As the line winded down we began to get glimpses of her through the curtain and hear her voice a little. We also saw many girls crying uncontrollably. At first, I thought someone died or something and then I realised they were just very excited to meet her. Honestly though, these girls appeared to be crying sad tears. Finally, we were next in line. We opened the curtain and there she was. She was so pretty and tall and amazing! When we walked in she immediately said I was tall which shocked me because at the height of 5’7” (wearing 3 inch heels) I was still no where near as close as tall as she was. I then told her that I happened to be wearing a shirt that she had been seen wearing just this Thursday.

She told me that she bought the shirt herself at Topshop. I was excited to hear this because I know tons of people buy clothes for her but she picked this one herself. I’ve had the shirt for a year. Then I told her I saw her sparkly dress that she instagrammed and was excited to see it at the concert.

She told me she was wearing it for Style. Then she told us that she had lots of surprises in store for us. We took a picture after that with her. We hugged her again and then went back out into the loft, which was decorated super cool just like her home in New York with an awesome brick wall.

After we left the meet and greet with Taylor her Mom was standing outside the room. We went over to her and began to strike up a conversation. I told her how I am going to Notre Dame, where her son Austin went, and we found out that I am majoring in the same exact department he majored in! I had no idea he majored in FTT (film, television, theatre) and it’s crazy sad that he graduated right when I was about to come to Notre Dame.

We began to talk about costumes that Taylor wore. In the loft in cases there were three Taylor Swift outfits in cases. One was black and silver one but I can’t remember what it was from. The other was the outfit she wore on “ew” with Jimmy Fallon.

The third she wore at the 2013 Billboard music awards by Zuhair Murad which is one of my all time favourites (see picture). After hugging Mama Swift we left the Loft.

We watched Vance Joy and he was amazing! I’ll have a separate post about that up soon.

Finally, after a ton of waiting in the pit, Taylor Swift finally appeared on stage wearing the cutest outfit ever singing Welcome to New York. The crowd went CRAZY. Her vocals were on point the ENTIRE show which is very hard to do especially with how she was dancing. Her dancers had flawless choreography and her backup singers were amazing too.  My favourite song that she sang was Bad Blood because the choreography was great. Remember earlier when I mentioned that Taylor had some surprises up her sleeve. Well she sure did. Dan Reynolds from Imagine Dragons popped up from under the stage, even though he is currently on tour, and sang Radioactive with Taylor. The crowd went crazy and nobody had any idea that he was at the concert in the first place. He was amazing and it was awesome of him to come and see us even though he was so busy at the moment  Then later, during the song Style, Taylor’s two friends Martha Hunt and Gigi Hadid came out and walked the runway for all 51,000 of us. The crowd went crazy.

Sadly the concert came to a close and we had to leave and go home. Whilst we waited to leave we watched the tear down of the stage, which was happening insanely fast. I honestly need to hire those people to clean my room right now.

Anyways the show was amazing, taylorswift is amazing, and it was the best concert I’ve ever been to. I can’t wait for her next album and next tour! I plan on being there. I love you Taylor!
