Due to a lack of support and/or understanding the significance of having African American owned banks in the community, two more closed their doors recently. The dwindling number has those in the know concerned to say the least.
Did You Know There Were 21 African American Owned Banks In The Country?
There are 21 African American owned banks with assets totaling approximately $4.7 billion in assets or approximately 0.43 percent of African America’s $1.1 trillion in buying power.
In 1994, there were 54 African American owned banks according to the FDIC. Now, there are 21. At this rate, the numbers will be down to single digits in the next two decades or less, despite the annual spending power rapidly increasing.
Below is a list of the ONLY 21 black owned banks in the country. These banks all have majority, 51% African American ownership or more, black owners. .
