Jeremy's fan letter

The following is an excerpt from Bending the Willow by David Stuart Davies:

One incident that David Burke recounted brought the house down at the Northern Musgraves’ Jeremy Brett Memorial Lunch. it is a tale that reveals not only Brett’s humour and eccentricity, but also his endearing, self-effacing qualities:

“Jeremy said to me on one occasion, “I was feeling so low the other day that I sent myself a fan letter.”

“Are you serious?”

“I’m absolutely serious.”

“What did you write to yourself?”

“Dear Jeremy, I would just like to say what a wonderful actor you are. Your Sherlock Holmes puts every other attempt at the part in the shade. Basil Rathbone is not fit to clean your boots; and Douglas Wilmer and Robert Stephens should beg you to give them lessons. You’re much prettier than all of them, for a start. There is only one word for your performance–magic. Please send me a signed photograph. Yours, Joe Bloggs. P. S. I’ve heard that you’re a really nice person, too.”

”Did you really write that?”

”Yes, I did.”

“Did you send it?”

”Yes. I put a first-class stamp on it. I wanted to get it as soon as possible. It came the next morning.”

“And did you read it?”

”Of course I read it. I read it a dozen times. I felt wonderful afterwards.”

”Well, did you send yourself a signed photograph?”

”David, I may be mad–but I’m not barking mad! In any case, the bugger didn’t send a stamped addressed envelope!”

when vash was on the enterprise and bev took her for a tour, all I wanted was for them to actually look at each other, beyond the perceived competition for picard

vash is an adventurer and a pragmatist; she’s self-serving and clever and nonetheless well-meaning, with a sharp sense of humor and the ability to adapt to any situation. bev’s grounded, for all that she’s in space–she’s a widow, a doctor, a mother; she’s a caretaker in every sense of the word, but she’s also a dancer and a romantic

bringing them together wouldn’t be easy I think- there’d have to be a crisis where vash’s interests lined up with those of the enterprise, at least at first- but I can see the way their skillsets would be complimentary. I can see vash almost losing the thread of a con just for bev, with her trustworthy smile and the authority of a doctor, to seal the deal; I can see bev knowing what needs to be done and vash knowing how to make it happen. they’d walk out the other side of the crisis knowing they’re a good team–and maybe bev would enjoy a little spark of adventure, and vash would enjoy the look on the bridge crew’s face when she gets to flaunt the fact that she did something for the good of someone other than herself

at the end of it all, maybe bev owes vash a dance

(and maybe they’re both looking forward to the day vash cashes in)

OKAY, so, here. Here we go.

So, based on all the clues I’ve gathered and posts of what other people have theorized, here’s my lil’ bit. To start off; Mark’s profile pics. If you’ll look down there, you’ll see that they’re black. This means Mark is gone, or has gone Dark (or been replaced by him) (but that part’s irrelevant to my theory).

Now to the Instagram word shit. Mark posted five letters on the first day, and added a few more each day. If you fill in a few spaces from today’s clue, you’ll see that it could easily spell “Who Killed Markiplier?” And this will probably be revealed tomorrow/in the last clue when Mark adds the final letters.

Next, we have the Tumblr clues, which look like security camera screenshots. Most have theorized that it’s a FNAF thing, maybe even Googleplier, but going off of what we’ve seen, it seems to be simple footage from Mark’s house, maybe used in an investigation to find out what happened to him (because we all know that they is security cam footage when solving murders).

I’v brightened them and added some notes.

[Edit: Basically, I noticed in the first screenshot (no time stamp, in Mark’s living room) that the KOS crown was there. In the second (this one had a timestamp, but no subtle “kill” in the corner), it was Mark/a Mark ego shaking hands/taking something from a mystery dude. The “camera” is looking through a window (you can see blinds (or maybe it’s a vent?)), so they obviously hadn’t meant to be seen. The third seemed to be in Mark’s kitchen or maybe another room with tile, and it looked like there was an opening to his living room. In the bottom right, I realized that it was some dude wearing a hat. Each of these is taken in a separate room, further supporting that they’re security cameras, which are usually placed incrementally around a house (also, it says “security mode” in all of them).]

TWITTER - So, the hints on twitter were given as short videos of old, ripped photographs in bad lighting during a thunder storm. The first clue was simply the first half of the photo. The second clue is the almost completed photo, and, from what I’ve deducted, is a picture of the Chef (the outfit, the word “chef” under him) on the left and a picture of Tyler/the waiter (isn’t it funny how strikingly similar the photo is to him?) on the right from “A Date With Markiplier.” Their eyes have been scribbled out, which leads me to believe that they’ve been eliminated. Whether they’ve been eliminated as “suspects” for Mark’s murder or they’ve also been killed is still up in the air. Though, based on the wear and tear and blood stains on the photo, I’m gonna assume the latter.

AND SO, I think it’s safe to assume that this whole thing, the whole of October, is just going to be us trying to figure out wth happened to Mark. Now, the clues started on Instagram, then Tumblr, and then Twitter. I’m thinking that maybe there might be a video soon? I don’t know. But back to the clues; because of the photo, I’m wondering if maybe something happened to Mark on the date. Or, maybe the investigation is for when Mark died in the chocolate ending. Maybe this will end in another interactive video thing?? I don’t know. Please, if you have any ideas, or anything to add, please do. I know about 90% of us are just as curious as I am.

(Wait… if I’m right, then who’s been pretending to be Mark since then? *grins*)

The first 3 pics are stamping I did over a watermarble base. The last 3 pics are the neon water marble base.
I used the ANIV Revisited Collection for the base. I used French Tips by Meijer Stores for my stamping polish and plate In Motion 02 from Lina Nail Art Supplies.

janice and nyota are definitely the kind to always, without fail, share their breakfast time with each other. it’s a grounding little routine, to see each other, exchange a soft kiss, and discuss their plans for the day as they eat; it’s a guarantee that no matter how hectic their shifts become, no matter what madness the enterprise encounters this time, they’ll see each other at least once. they’re both morning people, too, so it’s easy for them to get moving early enough to linger in the mess, their knees brushing and their voices soft, well after their plates are empty and cleared away

Utapri Maji Love Live 6th Stage Twitter Round Up

DISCLAIMER: I am only rounding up information found on twitter in one huge post as a reference for convenience. I did not go to the concert.

Alright! This isn’t the best round up of info I’ve gotten but I might update this as other people on twitter put out their thoughts and feelings and what they saw!

I walked in to see her in nothing but my worn out t-shirt and panties. She was jamming out to some weird remix playing on the radio, shouting her made up lyrics off-key. I couldn’t keep in my chuckle as she excitedly rocked her air guitar and whipped her hair like she was a rockstar from the 70s. I made my way to the kitchen and wrapped my arms around her energetic body, making her jump a little.

“Luke. You scared me to death dude.” She breathed, getting tired from her previous “rock show”.

“When will you stop calling your boyfriend dude?” I chuckled, pressing my lips to her sweaty forehead.

“Never.” She poked her tongue out teasingly while running away from my grasp. I shook my head at her childlikeness before rushing towards her, scooping her up and throwing her down onto the couch.

“Alright Titch. I still need to work on some stuff, but I’ll come down soon and help you with dinner okay?” I pecked her pouty lips before walking to my office.

Let me talk at you about Iron Bull’s armor

So I was figuring out how to do Iron Bull’s armor, and it’s pretty interesting from both a technical and a characterization standpoint. Bioware has long made an effort to have their characters’ costumes obey the laws of physics, to include actual pockets, straps, etc, and Bull’s armor is no different – I can look at the decorative scrollwork on it and tell you what tool is used to apply that design.

This one, called a pear shader

But – and this is the cool part – that’s a pretty off-label use of that tool. The pear shader isn’t normally used for making an entire design, it’s used for adding depth to specific places, such as the curve of leaves or petals:

Moreover, almost all leather tooling is first carved before it’s stamped – you cut the general outlines with a swivel knife, and then use a variety of stamping tools to create different depth and texture effects. Here’s the progression, as taken from my Thorin bracers tutorial:

But there is no cutting anywhere in Iron Bull’s armor. It’s all stamps. (Different stamps; I think parts of the belt are going to take a beveler instead of a pear shader, but my point stands.) From a world-building perspective, this is such a cool detail. That the qunari don’t just put different designs on their armor, they use entirely different techniques in their leathercrafting – as they would, if their tradition had evolved independently of human craftsmanship. This thrills my nerd-artisan soul to the core – that somebody at Bioware thought of that, and that it showed up in the game.

So anyway, here is my first foray into off-label use of the pear shader, experimenting with both smooth and textured versions:

I’m not loving the wobbly lines on it – as happens, when you’re not following cutlines – but then I looked at the reference pic again, and that is… exactly what Iron Bull’s shoulder is doing. Whoever designed his armor certainly knew what they were on about, hats off. :)

Continued in Part 2!

Oh my gosh. I just thought of something. Spoilers for those who haven’t finished their Sun or Moon play through!

I’ll try to read more it, but mobile users be aware, your phones are magic and don’t seem to care about that. You’ve been warned.

Technically Hala is a member of the Elite Four at the end game, but he’s still the current kahuna. While Hau is a good choice, kahuna’s seem to generally be slightly older than kids. So who on the islands might be a next possible kahuna before Hau?

…I mean, it’s kinda right there.

Guzma still vaguely sees Hala as his master, is getting trained by him, and once wanted to be a captain. Imagine if one day he was elevated past and above that to being a kahuna. Tapu Koko just appearing before him, giving him a nod like “You’re finally ready” before flying off.

And Guzma takes it full on serious, like he’s rough around the edges but he tries his best and Hala watches over him and helps correct him along the way when needed? Kahuna Guzma?!

Do you think there is any significance to the painting "Backward's Beauty?" I noticed recently that Fuu often does that pose throughout the show. Often looking contemplative or worried.

Hello! Thanks for your question! Actually, yes. I find it very significant. I recently found some more information on this topic that I am using for my Samurai Champloo story. I think the contemplative/worried look of Fuu is meaningful to the term itself. To begin with, let’s talk a  little bit about the actual meaning.

The Japanese words for “Backwards Beauty” are “Mikaeri Bijin”. Another better translation is “Looking Back Beauty”. The term was popularized by the artist Moronobu Hishikawa when he made this Ukiyo-e (woodblock print) painting in the Tokugawa era, titled “Mikaeri Bijin”:

It was later printed on the first commemorative Japanese stamp in November of 1948. Having made drawing styles of his own creation, he is considered a forerunner for many future Ukiyo-e artists. He even inspired Vincent van Gogh. Samurai Champloo watchers will better know Moronobu Hishikawa’s work looking like this for the sake of mashed up history and an anime plot twist flair:

…Very little similarity besides the title. And anime viewers will see Moronobu Hishikawa looking very different than actual history. I highly doubt he was so flamboyant with long manicured purple nails, and purple lipstick. But hey, ya never know.

Since the making of this painting and many other prints by Hishikawa, the idea of Mikaeri Bijin has influenced Japanese culture for years to come (to the point where Samurai Champloo references it). There is a song by pop group Morning Musume using the title. Mikaeri Bijin refers to a woman who looks beautiful when looking behind her. It is considered coquettish, as she does not turn around to flaunt herself, but rather shyly glances over a shoulder. It also reveals a woman’s nape of the neck which is a sexual yet not raunchy display of the body in Japanese culture. The term itself has romantic undertones too, as it can refer to a woman looking at the man of her affections without expressing her feelings. Modern day Japanese people will use the term as a joke. As it can mean, “a woman who looks beautiful from the back…who turns around and is ugly”. Of course, this was not the case in old Japan.

Mikaeri though, as a word, is simply “looking back”. Looking back can represent looking back at the past, but pressing forward. I think this heavily describes Fuu as a character. She is searching for her past, and yet is forced to look onward as she travels across Japan. And yes, you are correct in saying Fuu is shown many times looking back. Even the opening credits has her doing so.

We can safely say, just as Hishikawa said in the anime, she is truly a beauty looking backwards.  Now from here, I’m going to diverge a bit. But I promise this will connect to the concept of “Mikaeri” or “looking back”

Many people wonder where Mugen, Fuu and Jin grew up. And while the anime never states it, it is very apparent for Mugen and Jin due to actual history. Miyako-shima was the penal colony in the Ryukyuan Islands during the Tokugawa time period, where criminals of all kinds were put. The paantu black figures that watch Mugen as he almost dies three times in his life are a Miyako-shima deity that chase off evil spirits during an annual festival. This is obviously Mugen’s birthplace. The Takeda clan, or more specifically, the real Mariya Enshirou owned the Kururi Castle outside of Edo. Since this was Jin’s caretaker, and teacher, and Jin was supposed to be heir to the dojo, we can assume Jin grew up there.

What about Fuu?

There is very little information to deduce where she grew up. We know nothing of the town. There is no recorded information I can find about an actual person names Kasumi Seizou. And we see she didn’t live in Nagasaki because that is where her father fled. But…her hometown could quite possibly be handed to us in the very first episode.

Or should I say…the very first ending song.

“Shiki no Uta” or “Song of Four Seasons” is the ending song for the majority of the anime. A collaboration of the singer Minmi and the composer/arranger Nujabes, it was made specifically for the anime itself, and not by the artists separately. This is considering the anime’s first episode aired on May 19th 2004. But the song was only released in the album Samurai Champloo Music Record: Masta on June 23rd 2004, a whole month later.

The lyrics describe the seasons passing by from a girl’s perspective. And there is the repeated mention of someone they wish to follow, or the way they felt when they were “being held”. It can sound like a romance song, pertaining to Fuu’s relationship with one of her bodyguards. However, I think the song is more about finding her father, as that is the theme of the entire show. The montage of pictures for ending credits display memories of Fuu’s childhood, and her mother and father. The reason I bring this up is for a very specific lyric. Again…the song was made for the anime itself.

Lyric: “Summer comes to Uji, and in the fields are patterns of grass set out to dry.”

Uji is a town southeast of Kyoto that dates back to over a thousand years ago. Uji held no significance in the anime. Never did the trio go there. Never was it mentioned, nor is Uji a a super famous place to the rest of the world. But, Uji,  despite being a small city, is pretty notable in history. For one, the last chapters of the Tale of Genji take place there. The Tale of Genji was the first novel. By first novel, I mean FIRST novel. Ever. So Uji has many landmarks and statues referencing the book for tourists.

Uji is also well known for being a key producer of tea in Japan, as there are many tea leaf fields in the past and even now. The Tsuen Tea Shop still stands, and is the oldest tea shop in all of Japan. This perhaps explains the lyrics “Summer comes to Uji and the patterns of grass (plants/shoots) are set out to dry.”

Grass, being tea grass.

These are women during the Tea Harvesting Festival in Uji:

I’m no expert on botany, and I would like if someone could give more info…but it seems to me that these plants by Kasumi Seizou could quite possibly be tea plants. They look very similar.

So now, we can theorize based on the anime credit’s lyrics and pictures that Fuu was possibly born/raised in the town of Uji.

Here’s a little bit about Uji that will help clarify why this pertains to “Mikaeri Bijin”.

Long ago, the kanji for Uji was written to mean “The Way of Rabbits” or “Rabbit Road”. Rabbits… Seems pretty random right? Well, like anything Japanese, there is of course a  legend surrounding this:

Prince Wakairatsuko once got lost in the woods trying to find the way back to Uji. Upon walking, he saw a “Mikaeri Usagi” or “Looking back rabbit”. The rabbit would look at him, then hop along. It would stop again and again every little while, as if to tell the prince to follow him. Eventually, after following the rabbit for a time, he found himself in Uji again.

This would be an example of a “Mikaeri Usagi” or “Looking back rabbit”:

Since then, the “Mikaeri Usagi” has been the motif of Uji, as well as the guardian of the Shinto Shrine Ujigami-jinja. The Prince the rabbit helped is also one of the three deities of said shrine. The Ujigami shrine, thought to be the oldest shrine in all of Japan, sells an array of rabbit trinkets. These rabbit charms hold fortunes for the future.

The meaning of the“mikaeri usagi” is that it will help you find your path in life, if you ever feel lost. Just like the legend. Rabbits are also symbolized with this, because despite looking back. they do not ever leap back. Only move forward while contemplating the past. Across from Ujigami shrine, is another shrine called Uji shrine. Before the 1800s, The two shrines were connected labeled “upper and lower” Uji shrines… But…they were separated during the Meiji Restoration. Here is Uji Shrine nowadays, still preserved:

…Could it be?

There’s always the possibility Fuu once prayed to the guardian spirits of Uji shrine for her future.

If Uji could very likely be Fuu’s hometown, and the “looking back rabbit” is a town icon…and she is called the “looking back beauty”, I can safely say that it described her perfectly. She looks back on her past, and from there forges her future. Mikaeri as a term both describes her and could reveal the location of her possible hometown.

Thank you for your question and I hope it interests everyone who takes the time to read or research this topic! ^^

Okay but like now I kinda want to see how Beka and Yuri would react to JJ when they first see his tramp stamp in the loverboy AU in crying laughing thinking about it

Yuri DEFINITELY noticed it the first night he went home with JJ - but he was kind of too busy drooling over the rest of him to give him hell for it (and at that point he was still too wary of doing anything that’d potentially end up in him getting kicked out of where he’d managed to score a bed for the night). However, once he got comfortable enough with JJ and realized he wasn’t a dick, Yuri sure let him have it for his terrible taste in tattoos (the maple leaf with the anthem beneath it bothers Yuri the most, I think. Especially because JJ already has a Canadian flag over his bed that Yuri has to look at sometimes while getting fucked.)

Beka just burst out laughing the first time JJ stripped down in front of him. Definitely made JJ parade around a bit and slapped his ass, too, because “What the hell, Leroy, did you get that on spring break?”

(Turns out, he did)

a couple sketches from mine and @littleblackchat’s fic. hopefully it will be done soon lol. [it’s slow going cos we are both pretty busy and also on nearly opposite sides of the globe]

you can see some of lbc’s sketches for the fic over here~

2nd photo is from 6x12:

Identical red velvet cupcakes, and a reference to the moment we first saw the stamp for the special parties that Eric Kahn threw.

I’m STILL not giving up on NAT.

Give No Quarter (XV)

Thrain’s Fury, now a nameless trader ship, trailed after the trawling barge towards a small isle city shrouded in fog. Captain Oakenshield and his crew had stripped themselves of arms and ornaments and looked little better than a crew of hard-done merchants. The Fury gaped with the holes left from battle and the fallen mast slumped over the husk of a ship. To any, the vessel would seem little more than sailors beset by the cruelty of privateers. None would guess that it was quite the opposite.
