Newport Folk Festival Day 3 Snaps

At 11:00am Christopher Paul Stelling wailed, finger picked his guitar behind his head, covered a David Lamb song, brought people who didn’t even know who he was to tears, proposed to his girlfriend on stage to a standing ovation. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats got people dancing, again. Lord Huron made it to the largest stage and brought a sound to match. It didn’t matter that one half of First Aid Kit lost her voice because the audience filled in during “Emmylou” anyway. I debated skipping Hozier for Shakey Graves but I didn’t and screamed every word to every song and I regret nothing. There were rumors of Bono or Eric Clapton filling the final surprise slot in a tribute to Bob Dylan going electric at the festival 50 years ago. The rumors were wrong, but Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes held the same guitar Dylan played in ‘65 and the festival ended with Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Al Kooper and eventually everyone else – Hozier, Chris, Shakey Graves, Laura Marling, Willie Watson, John McCauley, backed by Preservation Hall Jazz Band – and DAMN does Newport know how to go out with a bang.

What kind of stuff do I need to keep at home to have a decent first aid kit on hand? The packs my family used always just had Advil, Tylenol, various band-aids, ice packs, Neosporin, alcohol wipes, and Hydrogen peroxide, but I had to use the one at work the other day and I didn't even recognize what half the shit in it was, let alone know how to use it. I looked on Google but the lists seem to vary on what's necessary. Also, where should I go to find out what I'm doing with the supplies?

So, here’s a real fucking handy list of first aid kit supplies (for a family of four) from the Red Cross [link]. It’s recommended that you also customize your kit according to your and your family’s needs. For instance, adding a list of emergency contact numbers (911 is a kind of no-shit-sherlock thing, but do you have Poison Control’s phone number memorized?), listing your Primary Care Physician’s contact info, list of current prescriptions for family members, and extra medication. Everything should be clearly labeled, FYI (makes it all a bunch damn easier in emergencies).

As for how to learn how to use the kit, there’s a bunch of options that are legit. You could check to see if your local park district, firehouse, police station, or community college offers/hosts free or discount first aid courses. There’s also a first aid course locator on the Red Cross’s website [link]. The Red Cross also has an app for Android/iPhone that covers basic first aid techniques [link]. Plus you can always read a book on first aid. You can even keep it in the first aid kit, which may benefit as books can cause paper cuts that can really fucking hurt. :-)

“America” by First Aid Kit // Live on The Late Show with David Letterman (5.7.15)

As David Letterman’s tenure as host of the Late Show winds down, he’s been bringing in his favorite musicians over the years, as well as having some of them performing his favorite songs. He recently had Tracy Chapman on to cover “Stand By Me”, which he said he used to sing as a lullaby for his son when he was a toddler. Last night, he had on dream-folk duo, First Aid Kit to perform another song that was in his lullaby repertoire, Simon & Garfunkel’s classic, “America”. It’s a sweet, moving take on the classic which still manages to give me chills, all these years after hearing it myself in my mother’s regular rotation as I was growing up. Letterman is down to his final couple of weeks. It’s the end of era, and the host is celebrating with some great guests. Be sure to keep an eye peeled for what is sure to be a strong collection of musical guests.

And I know you have a heavy heart;
I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me
have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me I’m not a gamble
you can count on me to split
The love I sell you in the evening,
by the morning won’t exist.
