If going out to eat is starting to feel a bit humdrum, perhaps it’s time to take your dining up a notch, or rather 180 notches. Dinner In The Sky is an adrenaline-fueled fine dining experience that takes place around a steel dining table structure that’s secured to a set of cables and suspended by crane up to 180 feet above the ground.

Each of the table’s 22 guests are safely strapped into comfy leather seats before the crane lifts them all off the ground. The center of the table features a walking platform which accommodates the chef and up to 4 additional service personnel. The basic package rents out the table for 8 hours and can be set up for any sort of meal, meeting, cocktails, or whatever else you can dream up to take place around a metal table hanging high in the air. Just don’t drop your fork.

Chili pakoras, garlic naan, papdi chat (pastry crisps with sweet chutney), mattar paneer (cottage cheese cubes with peas), and baingan bharta (mashed eggplant in mughlai spices) @ India House in River North. The perks of having an Indian coworker who will take you to all her favorite haunts and order for you. The eggplant dish was unexpected and so delicious!

I forget where in Korea the beef was from, but they said it was their equivalent of Kobe beef…

For dessert we started with a clementine mousse wrapped in chocolate served with blood orange sherbet and hazelnuts…

And were then treated to a second sort of chocolate cake which I apologize for not having the details of…

It was an interesting change of pace to have a fancy meal like this in Seoul for once, and one I would not mind experiencing again!

Goat chili cheese fries, fish tostadas (fried whitefish. shallot aioli, chickpeas onion salad), and deep-fried pig’s tail with pickled radish @ Little Goat in West Loop with @sputnikhearts!! ♥♥♥ Unfortunately spent dinner harried and distracted because a work crisis surfaced 30 minutes before our reservation ㅜㅜ ㅜㅜ but I’m super happy I managed to catch Kara before she continued en route to Colorado!

this is our most gorgeous one. It’s a raviolo filled with a whole egg yolk, served with a pea puree, and topped with a black caviar quenelle and golden pea shoots

A Dinner at Frances

I finally made it to Frances, the California inflected casual fine dining restaurant of Chef Melissa Perello located in the Castro. The restaurant is tiny, making reservations here generally dificult to come by without advanced planning. There is a small “bar” area at the front that you could squeeze into if you had a small party of one or two. Frances epitomizes the sweet spot of San Francisco dining - the mid-priced, casual fine dining (I know, a bit of an oxymoron) restaurant. The food is always solid, the price point not too high but not cheap either, and the ambience is casual and relaxed. 

We started with an order of chick pea fritters, applewood smoked bacon beignets, and a ceviche. My favorite by far were the chick pea fritters, with their delicately cruchy exterior and soft, rich interiors. The dipping sauce for the beignets was excellent too, although I didn’t really taste the bacon in the beignets themselves. 

Chicory salad. I especially loved the torched citrus, which gave the dish a nice smokey aroma. The dish had balanced acidity, sweetness and crunch from the nuts. Just a solid dish.

Spoon bread, which is basically a form of corn bread. So rich and creamy, with strong corn flavor. I loved the contrast of the crisp exterior and soft, dense interior. 

Linguini with braised escarole. The olive oil made this dish rich and creamy, and crasted well with the crunchy crumb crust.

Perfeclty seared duck breast. Solid dish. 

Bavette steak. I loved the fried allium topping. Solid dish.

We ordered two desserts: a carrot cake of sorts if I recall, and this rich chocolate pudding. The pudding was probably a liitle too rich for me, but I can see how this would be the perfect dessert for a chocoholic.
