fine concert

before learning about the mcelroys I’d never been a huge fan of any real actual human beings before.

Like, I love the stuff they make but I really just love them as creators even more than I love their creations, they could make/do anything and I’d like it just because I like them as people.

I. HATE. THIS. SCHEDULE.

Bee do you wear makeup? Im in my early 20s and never wore makeup. Okay there was this one time I thought someone's skittles brand chapstick/gloss actually tasted like skittles so I took a chunk outta that... I was 10. Anyway growing up I had no interest what so ever in makeup but now I want to dabble in it a bit. I feel like I missed out on it as a kid. I dont think I'd go all out because I touch my face too much and always press my lips on my shirts. I guess what im saying is how did you learn?

Yeah, once in a blue moon! I never had interest in makeup as a teen, and the few times I had makeup put on me I got teased for it. :); Not the most encouraging right!! I avoided it afterwards as part of my “hate all things perceived as feminine” phase until my late twenties, apparently.

I really wanted to try to play with it again on my own terms, as much or as little as I wanted to fit my style. I don’t use a whole lot either, mostly mascara and eyepencil, chapstick and maybe some bb/cc cream if I’m feeling fancy (or I broke out again due to stress lol..) I haven’t found a lip color that I feel comfy with yet; mine are really thin and I’m really pale and it’s just.. too bold, most the time. OTL! Or it’s a bit too cheap and smears off in two seconds but I’m not bout to get pricier waterproof stuff if I’m not sure I’ll like it, ya feel me…

I worry a lot about similar things, because I rub/touch my face all the time, especially my eyes! The thing that helped me was the face that when I put mascara and eyeliner on I can feel it, the same way I can feel the weight of nail-polish- so I typically am aware of it enough to avoid touching or do so with caution. “TODAY IS A MAKEUP DAY” I also am in a certain mode/headspace when I doll up that much that isn’t as stimmy/touchy, so that helps. It’s sort of like acting in a play to me, which makes it a bit more fun and easier to do…? Kind of an odd solution, so I’m not sure if that’ll help you- but I still definitely think you should go for it! It’s super experimental like all acts of self expression and fashion- I did it in the privacy of my own home for several months taking selfies for RESEARCH before wearing it in public (to conventions and concerts where everyone else was super dressed up, to ease me into it)  Baby steps are fine.

You could always ask someone you trust to help you get familiar with stuff too- my sister helped me a lot in this department. I did a lot of lurking and watched a lot of YT videos for tips, tutorials, and reviews on products. Definitely don’t bother breaking the bank for ‘the good stuff’, that can be found at walmart or a drugstore for way cheaper. IMO, it’s not worth a lot for how little I use it, so start with simple affordable basics that appeal to you.

FIVE

“Micky, darling!” my mother answers, all rainbows and sunshine. It’s late afternoon over there, and I can see she’s sitting on our back deck, tea mug in hand. Her long blond hair is pulled back at the sides, the rest of it flowing in the breeze. Her green eyes are sparkling, crinkled at the edges with her smile. She looks just as good as the photos of her from when she was in her twenties, just with a few laugh lines thrown in over the years.

“Hi, Mum, how are you?” I ask, trying to keep the camera pointed away from Harry. I’m leaned up against the car door, keeping Harry away with my foot where he’s trying to scoot closer to me, laughing.

“I’m great, sweetheart. Just enjoying the nice weather for once,” she says with a little huff and a playful roll of her eyes. She squints as she look around the screen. “Where are you at? That’s not New York.”

“I had the concert last night, remember? I’m still in Jersey.”

“Oh, that’s right! One Direction. Ugh, those lads are so adorable! You had meet and greet tickets, right? Did you get to see Harry? Is he just as cute in person?” My mother has just steam rolled this conversation. I give Harry pointed look over my phone to say, ‘See, I told you she’s in love with you.’

He laughs kind of loudly, alerting my mother that someone else is around.

“Is that Trevor? What was that look for? Mick, darling, where are you?”

“I’m just in a car, Mum. No, it’s not Trevor, he’s in the hotel.” It’s no use lying to my mother; she’d just pull the information out of me eventually, anyway.
