okay so since a couple of people asked me already, here is my tutorial on how i color manga caps! this way is pretty simple as im still learning and trying new things. it’s a bit time consuming and you’ll need a basic understanding of photoshop, but overall it’s not very difficult!

the first thing is find a manga scan you want to use. this is the one im using its shishio from hnr of course

before we do anything make sure you’re on RGB mode (image>mode>RGB color) otherwise colors wont show up. 

duplicate the background layer and make sure only the background copy visible

okay now for some cleaning and rendering stuff! luckily this particular mangacap is already pretty well cleaned, but if not i usually adjust levels, or duplicate, filter>blur, and multiply a layer on top which should take away any pixelated icky things. also remember the stamp tool is your friend. sorry i wont really go into detail with all this ahh

theres a bunch of different ways to render, but what i personally think is the easiest for manga caps is using color range! just click on the rectangular marquee tool and then right click on the image and choose color range. now click on a white part of the cap and press ok.

when it’s all selected, hit ctrl + x to delete the background. crop out everything else you don’t need and it should look something like this:

erase (or select and cut with lasso/pen tool) anything you don’t want. here i erased everything in the background and i usually erase the little grey shading spots around the neck, eyes, nose, and mouth as well as a personal preference.

tip: if you want to make sure you got everything, put a dark/black layer underneath! (new layer>edit>fill>black)

HECK YEAH NOW ITS COLORING TIME !! pat yourself on the back you’ve done well im proud of you bby 

(here is a color palette i made especially for shishio a little while after i made this tutorial. you can grab skin tones and stuff from there idk)

first, you have to duplicate your background copy again. you should have two background copies now. layers are important !!! each thing you color will have a new layer between the two background copies

i usually start with the skin. i use a normal hard brush and erase any mistakes as i go. i just noticed i picked a horrible color but its okay because you can always fix colors later again, using a black layer behind is pretty convenient to see if you’ve missed anything or if you’re coloring outside of the lines

you would normally repeat this step for hair, clothes, etc. (also another remind to make sure you make a new layer underneath the previous for each thing you color !!!!!) but since shishio’s hair is already colored in, you’ll find that photoshop won’t let you color over it. now you’re going to need to hold on to your anime plushies and body pillows, because things are going to get a bit complicated 

if you want to color the actual hair, make a layer above the background copies and set it to screen. however, im only coloring in the highlights so you would do the same thing except set it to multiply.

the eyes will also be above the background copy. set it to multiply.

once you have a base color for everything, it’s time to shade!

make a new layer above the layer you’re going to shade and create a clipping mask. this basically makes it so it will only show up on things you colored on this previous layer (try coloring a spot outside of the skin, you’ll see what im talking about)

i cant really explain how to shade, since im not very good at it myself but after you figure out where the light source is, just try to picture where the shadows will be.

 i used a soft brush (0% hardness) with 55% opacity to shade around the forehead, neck, nose, ears, jaw, and clothes

resize to 500px and add backgrounds, textures, adjustments and stuff or throw a psd or two on there to make things nice as such:

extras: (don’t ask me why i do this, it just looks cool okay) flatten all the layers excluding the psd and make two copies —

filter>blur the first copy and set to multiply
set the second copy to screen

change the opacity according to what you think looks best

Hi Hellandye!!! Sorry I took so long to answer this! I knew I needed a lot of time to spend on it… anyway, I’m excited you’re starting a webcomic! :D Everyone works on comics differently but I’ll tell you what helps me and maybe it’ll help you u vu)b if you’re struggling with something, let me know and I bet I could come up with another way to work on it!

1) Draw for print

  • When starting a comic, I’d always recommend drawing it at a size that can be printed bc you never know if you’ll want to print it later! Choose a size that’s good for you. 8.5″x11″, 7″x10.5″, etc. TINF is 5.25″x7.75″. (It’s recommended to draw your comic even larger than you want the final size to be, just make sure the ratio is the same! Things always look better sized down…)
  • Even if you draw your comic traditionally, make sure to scan it in and do any digital edits at a resolution no lower than 300dpi. If your resolution is lower than that, the quality won’t be as good when printed!
  • For each page I have the full size 300dpi PSD + a sized down for-web jpg (for ex, 600px wide, 72dpi).

Margins/Bleed

  • When you’re printing, you need a lot of space for margins and bleed areas that could get cut off during the print process! I’m really, truly awful about knowing this stuff tho, so I recommend googling it and checking out what printers suggest for margins and sizes for safe drawing areas. I think generally, all together, you leave 0.75″ of space around your page or something? I don’t remember the specifics but I think I usually just leave like an inch border all around LOL.

2) Planning

Think about…

  • The plot! If there’s no plot, what’s the goal? Maybe the goal is “everyone becomes friends and life is beautiful.” If that’s the case, then most of the things that happen in the comic are pointing the characters towards that goal. (Don’t get me wrong: not every single chapter has to be plot- or goal-driven. Character development arcs are great too! But what’s an anime with 900 filler episodes? No thanks…)
  • The important points of the comic! I made a bullet point list of all the important things I wanted readers to become aware of in some way in TINF (for ex, I wrote: “unknowingly meet Sydney Morgan’s publicist; meet actor Vincent Fawkes; Selby’s handwriting matches Sydney Morgan’s; Isaiah becomes suspicious of Landon and regrets ‘hiring’ him,” etc)

Summaries

  • I’m like the biggest fan of summaries EVER!!! Do a summary of your entire story. How do you want to introduce it? What’s the climax? How does it end? Really plan the beginning/end: the beginning is the backbone of the comic since it introduces the story (I regret TINF’s beginning everyday of my life, save me) + the end will be the driving force for it. The end of TINF is planned as, well… you guessed it, a summary, but I know what’s gonna go down.
  • Similarly, I do summaries of all my chapters: the beginning scene is concrete and planned out, the middle is kind of a general thought (in which you decide what you want to happen but the why can be messed around with), and the end scene is always concrete and planned out.
  • I leave the middle a general thought because comics are wild n free so it’s a lot easier to be loose and not get attached to a single idea. If you have single ideas for scenes that you’re super attached to, it becomes a real struggle because thoughts don’t always remain awesome when visualized… :’(

I’ve got my story, now how far ahead should I plan ahead?

  • Erm… I’m bad at this. This kind of thing changes the more you do comics. When I first started TINF, I had a Google doc of bullet points and ideas for about 15 chapters and I’d thumbnail at least half the chapter before I started on it. Thumbnailing a chapter is really great if you’re unsure about pacing: it helps make sure you don’t have a 50 pg intro scene, 11 pgs spent in the bathroom, and 30 pages of staring each other down DBZ style. It keeps you succinct so when someone checks back on your comic 5 months later you’re not still drawing the characters in the same room, having the same conversation about whether they should go to the mall or not. Once you get the hang of your pacing style, you can kind of procrastinate more… but… y-YOU SHOULDN’T… (don’t look at me)

3) Thumbnails

(Thumbnails are tiny versions of your pages. They’re generally sketchy and loose and are used to plan your comic visually.)

  • I put this in its own section outside of planning because thumbnails are 9000% the most important thing in my life :’D Some people work with scripts and, while I’ve planned through dialogue countless times, 1) you can’t put that much text into a page, 2) written dialogue moves a lot slower than visual dialogue in a comic–a “short” typed conversation can be pages and pages–so sometimes it’s better to plan the comic at the same time as the dialogue so the pacing is more natural. Or, if you do a script, maybe it’s not like a 100% must-be-their-dialogue type of thing.
  • Plan everything in your thumbnails: the perspective, how to draw that weird hand, where the speech bubbles are going to go (nothing worse than drawing a bg then covering it w/a bubble)… be precise! Do not stop thumbnailing if you can’t figure something out. Solve all your problems in the thumbnail stage!!!
  • I promise if you plan everything in the thumbnails (even greys/colors), inking your page will be SO FAST!!! It’ll be awesome. My record so far is 11 comic pgs in a day… (never again, please)
  • I do my thumbnails the same size ratio as a normal pg bc it makes life easier… :’)

4) Editing

  • Always show a friend your comics or tell them your ideas and get feedback!! It’s really easy to get lost in our own little world where everything makes sense but, honestly, a lot of things in our heads are trainwrecks. I always tell my chapter ideas or show my thumbnails or pages to a friend before releasing them into the world… (the crowd cheers and someone falls to their knees, shouting praises into the air, for not having to experience my unfiltered mind)

5) Little Nicole Things

(Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s you too! Be wild, be free, you can make comics in an infinite amount of ways, but here are some things that I think about a lot.)

The amount of text in…

  • The introduction! I’m a visual person. I generally don’t like to read. My #1 advice if you want to hook someone into your comic during the introduction is NOT to start off with a wall of text explaining everything. A straight-to-the-point, attention-grabbing introduction won’t put readers to sleep in the first 5 pgs of the comic while struggling to hit the ‘next’ button.
  • Speech bubbles! Don’t overload speech bubbles with text. If you have like 5 sentences in 1 speech bubble that’s probably too much. I know this is some style of comics so, definitely, if it’s your desire, go for it! But when things get wordy, my attention span wavers…

Pacing

  • Pacing is super tough especially when you want 900 things to happen in your comic. If you’re drawing a graphic novel or releasing your comic a chapter or more at a time, def go wild and free with pacing! I ENCOURAGE IT… it’s great.
  • BUT if you’re doing a once- or twice-a-week updated webcomic, the pacing is a lot more important. Something that helps me is: try to make at least 1 interesting thing happen in your page. If you have 1 exciting moment in your page, the tiny update for that week, hopefully, won’t feel unsatisfying.

Page size

  • Please remember to resize the page for web! Nothing is less exciting than having a 5000px wide image where I can’t even see one panel on the screen at a time.

Handwriting vs Font

  • Laughs darkly into the night over my handwriting… hi, hello there. Generally, it’s a lot easier and neater to use a font! When doing handwriting, I’d recommend using all caps because having all the letters at the same size is very smooth to read.
  • When doing handwriting, only use the hat/tail on an uppercase “I” if the “I” is the beginning of the sentence or if it’s the pronoun. For the rest, simply write it as a straight line.

Process

  • I’m going to tell you all a secret: all I do is blow up my thumbnails and ink over them. I don’t sketch. ~ur welcome~

6) Random tipz

  • Don’t get too attached to anything! Nothing destroys your entire being more than not being able to portray the scene you’ve been dreaming about for 900 years in your head perfectly.
  • Don’t force an idea! If you’re not feeling something, don’t do it. If you make your comic Everything You Love then, well, you’ll love it! If you’re bored with something, the readers will probably get bored too.
  • Progress will be fast so don’t let it get you down! It’s easy to want to give up or start over but you won’t get anywhere unless you keep pushing forward. Yes, I regret drawing like infinite # of TINF pgs, but usually you like it better later. Or, if you hate it… well… oh well… :’) verily, that is the way of the world… let’s do better next time!
  • Do 900 TINF cameos
  • Don’t be me :’)

7) HAVE FUN!!!

  • Comics can be as experimental as you want and there’s no “right” way to make them. If you decide you hated everything I said, that’s ok! Be you, have fun, express yourself, and you’ll love to make comics. And really, as long as you love it, that’s what matters the most! :D

I know it can be discouraging and at times you feel like “is it ever gonna happen for me” or “am I ever going to be in love?” Well my dear the answer is yes. I truly believe you are. “But what about” NOOOOOOO. No buts. Do I know when it will happen? No. But it’s going to. You may think what you want about yourself, but let me tell you something. You are amazing, and I need you to believe this. Your smile, your laugh, your body, your hair, your ears, your nose, your quirks…everything….is pretty darn wonderful. Ok, first, I’m sorry about the late reply. I wanted to give you a detailed answer and, as usual I got carried away. (look at this looooong, long post  >< )

Very interesting question!

Here are my 2 cents on the matter (written in Frenglish because I’m French, sorry about that). Of course YMMV and if you ask the same question to another illustrator, they will tell you something a bit different. I may have forgotten important points too. For a lot of people, what I’m gonna say here will seem obvious (very “No shit, Sherlock!”) but when I surf on the net, I’m not sure that what I wrote below is that obvious for everybody so…Ok, here we go.

1) The very, very start: choose your artist name wisely. No, Samlicker81 isn’t a good idea. You can use your real name like AliceXZ (Alice X. Zhang) or an artist name like Baruyon but it’s better if it’s not fandom related. Fandoms come and go and if you are planning to become a pro artist or just someone who post their fan art and personal production on the web, it’s better to stay rather neutral IMO.

2) Keep the name simple. Creatureofsorrowlostinthedarknessofafrozenheart isn’t a good idea, same with names like ywzkkkkkzrrrr88555. Looks cool when you create a profile on scenekids.com but people have to remember a bit who you are and this kind of names isn’t helping.

3) Keep the same user name on every platform if you can (or at least, a variation of it). It’s a pain in the ass  for people who are looking for you if you are Boris on Deviant Art, Stephanie on Tumblr and Marcel on LiveJournal. (Also, be careful on Tumblr if you change your url for Halloween or the Holiday Season to secure your real name on a side blog so that people can’t steal it from you like it happened to poor Badbastion a few weeks ago)

4) Organize your Tumblr thanks to tags, or your DA gallery thanks to DA folders. Create an art tag if you don’t have a separate art blog so that people can easily find what they are looking for. Nothing more boring than navigating through text posts and Glee gifs when what you are looking for is art. Don’t hesitate to delete unwanted posts once in a while to keep your archive “clean”.

5) Create a F.A.Q where you are gonna introduce yourself, say if you take commissions/requests or not, what software you use, tell about your drawing supplies. It will avoid you to constantly answer to the same questions.

6) Tag your art properly. The first 5 tags are the ones that count on Tumblr because they are here for referencing. So tag seriously the first five tags particularly if it’s stuff like “nswf” or “gore” and go wild on the others. That’s how people and search engine will notice you.

6) Sign your works so that people know where to find you. It’s a habit I lost but I’m gonna go back to it because my art has been floating around a lot without credit lately. No need to write your name in big just “my_name@Tumblr” at the bottom is enough.

7) Draw whatever you want. You love death!art and everybody hates it? Go ahead. Unless you really crossed the line (racist, homophobic, antisemitic artworks, etc…), nobody has the right to tell you what you should or shouldn’t draw. (Ex: “Why did you draw Dean with a cigarette? He’s not a smoker!! You shouldn’t draw something like this”. ).

8) Post your sketches. I had no idea that my sketchbooks could have any interest until I started to post them online. Apparently followers love to see what is happening “behind the curtain”.

9) Don’t hesitate to submit to blogs like eatsleepdraw, artforadults, or fuckyeahmoleskines so Tumblr crowds know that you are…out there. It’s not attention whoring, it’s promoting yourself, letting people know that you exist, particularly if you intend to become a pro illustrator. It’s part of the necessary networking. However too much cross-posting can create a “Oh fuck, not her/him again…” effect so, choose wisely.

10) A difficult one now: try to have the right perception of your work (= of your art skills) to make the difference between constructive criticisms and gratuitous bashing by imbeciles who improvised themselves art critics this morning, or just jealous people. Ex: I know that I have problems with hands (in spite of hours of practice) but when someone tells me that I am “a cunt who doesn’t know how to hold a pen”, it makes me laugh more than anything.

11) Never forget that…Internet never forgets. Even if you delete your artworks, they will still be “out there” because of reposting or people who have saved your art on their computer. Brilcrist took the decision to delete her Dean/Castiel artworks from her gallery about two years ago because she wasn’t interested in Supernatural anymore but it only takes 2mn to find some of her deleted drawings on the web. Same for me. I posted stuff anonymously on LJ forums two years ago and now they have been reposted on Tumblr (with credit!) and they are close to 3000 notes so…

12) Hang in there. a) you won’t become a skilled artist in one night, it takes years b) People will be harsh with you, if not absolutely mean sometimes so, just let go.

13) Don’t be afraid to interact with your followers and to leave your ask box open. Relax. You’ll learn very very quickly that 90% of the people who will contact you mean you no harm. Some questions are a bit awkward sometimes (= poorly worded) or people don’t realize that you aren’t a drawing machine that is here to draw what they want but when you take the time to explain them nicely, it’s ok most of the time. It’s not worth going ballistic.

If the question if really rude, you delete it (I do it quite often). Wank feeds wank. Otherwise, it’s better staying calm…And to carry on!

14) Your art will be stolen. Cropped. Edited with Celine Dion lyrics in Comic Sans. It will be printed without your permission on posters in the USA, on mugs in Russia and on T-shirts in China (true story). Be prepared. It will happen. And don’t go on Instagram, you gonna have an heart attack. (“My draaaawings!! Why are they cropped with an ugly filter!!”)


15) If you decide to take commissions, charge at the right price. Don’t underestimate your work and don’t let people tell you “Yes, but I know another artist who is less expensive than youuuuuu” (Good for you, bro!) . In other words $30 for a full CG art that takes you around 10 hours to make isn’t a good idea.

16) Keep your files in your computer organized. I didn’t do it when I started with Photoshop about 4-5 years ago and now, I lost a lot of drawings I loved. I have no idea where the original PSD files are. Lesson learned! (And save your art on an external HD too!!)

17) Finally, the most important advice: dress up. You have to look good so that your followers can enjoy how pretty you are.

  • I use photoshop CS5 (but any other photshop cs3,4 or 6 is fine as well)
  • You need to have basics knowledge of photoshop
  • Difficulty: 1/10
  • I advice you to use HQ picture for 500px pics. Otherwise make a 245px or 160px photoset.
  • Note that my photoshop is French. If you cannot figure out what it says, go on a photoshop translator on internet but normally the words are approximately at the same place
  • Sorry if it’s confusing, English isn’t my native language

Okay, first of all, I use an action. An action makes the sharpen automatically. You can find a lot of different actions on yeahps or pscs5 (my favourite ps blogs). Scroll down them and find one you like. Download it. When the download is over, double click on it.

Open your photoshop if not already down. Now you have to click on “window” then on “actions” (I can’t really remember the exact term in the english PS but you should find it pretty easily).

Now the name of the action should appear in the box. (here it’s sharp + noise)

Open an image. I’ll have Lee Pace because feels.

Now you need to resize your image. I’ll apply 500px x 700px. The picture looks good because I used an HQ picture.

It gives me this: (you can notice the pic looks good but a little something is missing)

Now you only have to click on the play button at the bottom of the action box (the arrowish thing).

You can now notice a slight better difference

Finally, download several psds you like or think they will be good (yeahps & pscs5 are your best friends!). Drag the PSD, play around with the layers inside the psds (change the opacity, remove things, add vibrance or level) and when you think it looks good enough, that’s it!

My final result is this:

Simple as that!

Hey! I really adore your art and every time you upload it, it has such a perfect quality. I wonder how you manage to do this? Is there a specific way of saving your files or any guidelines how to upload it properly? Like how large it should be, the pixels, the format? It'd be really helpful!

hey thanks! ok imma get a bit technical and it’s late so i might not be able to think of the proper terminologies and i might get stuff wrong because i’m no expert but i hope this will be understandable enough. 

as far as i know, the original material will always have the best image quality. the more circulation a pic gets prior to a download (for instance if the pic was first upped by its creator in devart, and then gets saved and re-upped in tumblr, and then gets saved from tumblr and upped into instagram, and then saved from instagram and upped into tumblr), the less crisp/the more pixelated it will look. this is due to image compression. most web services/platforms will compress your upped images, so what you’re downloading from them is basically a simpler, smaller version of the original picture that the creator uploaded by a small margin. you may not notice the first or second time, but when a pic goes through multiple platforms, it will get compressed multiple times. (this is why most reposted pics look like shit and deservedly so :) )

as for my process, i usually work at 150+ dpi. that way when i compress the image into jpeg to upload it, it will still retain significant details.

  1. flat 150+dpi psd
  2. save into 72dpi web-quality jpeg (‘good’ or sometimes ‘high’, depending on the purpose and level of details)
  3. tumblr has a size limit to image posts, which is 500w x 750h so i try to keep the final image exactly within those parameters

basically what i do is compress and upload my image in the best quality the smallest size would allow, so that while the details would remain visible, reprinting/reposting of the image would be unpleasant because of the image quality. (it’s a habit i picked up when i was a graphic designer because sometimes clients will just print the jpegs you email them to be able to get away without paying for the full image.)
