During the Distant Worlds concert in Pittsburgh on August 1, conductor Arnie Roth let a slip of the tongue, alleging that Square Enix is developing a “remake” of Final Fantasy XII.
Square Enix has not commented on Roth’s claim, and if such a project is underway, it is not clear whether “remake” refers to a full remake of the game similar to the Final Fantasy VII remake announced at E3 2015, or a high definition update of the original game in the same vein as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.
Final Fantasy XII was originally released in 2006 for PlayStation 2. To date, it is also so far the only main series title that has not been remastered or simply ported to another platform, like iOS or Android for I-VI; PlayStation Network for VII-IX; Steam for VII, VIII, and XI; or PlayStation 4 for X, XIII and XIV.
Series producer Yoshinori Kitase personally singled out XII as the game he would want to see get high definition treatment after Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, but explained can’t asset the same executive control over that title as FFX since he did not take part in the original game’s development.
