VALENTINE’S INSPIRED MEMES
  • “He loves me, he loves me not… oh.”
  • “She loves me, she loves me not… oh.”
  • “I don’t think it’s love…”
  • “So, is there anyone you’re secretly crushing on?”
  • “I don’t even like chocolate.”
  • “Yeah, nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a bouquet that’ll die in two days…”
  • “I’m not sure if they’re a secret admirer or a stalker… but at least they have good taste in gifts.”
  • “Oh! It’s my favourite time of year.”
  • “If I send a mass text to all the people I like, I don’t need to get all of them gifts do I?”
  • “I’ve never had a Valentine.”
  • “Will you be my Valentine?”
  • “Do you have a Valentine yet?”
  • “No one ever serenades me any more.”
  • “Just don’t write a song and play it in front of everyone again… it’s embarrassing.”
  • “Any secret admirers?”
  • “Oh, so you’re my secret admirer?”
  • “I may have been admiring you not so secretly.”
  • “Just because you like me doesn’t mean the feeling is mutual.”
  • “Seeing as we’ve both not got anyone, do you want to come to mine and watch a film?
  • "We’re never getting back together.”
  • “So, he got me a teddy bear, but we fought and he tore off it’s head.”
  • “How about instead of being ridiculous on one day of the year, you just be a decent partner for the other 364 days?!”
  • “We’re not together any more.”
  • “If you haven’t booked a table we definitely won’t get to eat there on such short notice.”
  • “It’s just Valentine’s day… I don’t see the big deal.”
  • “What do you mean you didn’t get me anything?”
  • “I’m feeling sick, is it okay if we arrange our date for another night?”
  • “I’m not sure if they’re a secret admirer or a stalker….”
  • “Well… they don’t know I’m going out with you so we’re going to have a girls night sitting in and cry about being single…”
  • “I’ve got the lube and strawberries, we’re all set!”
  • “I got out the whipped cream and she slammed the door in my face.”
  • “I am not wearing that.”
  • “When he said he would give me a pearl necklace, I thought I was getting actual jewelry.”
  • “It would have been a lot more romantic if you de-thorned the rose before you put it in your mouth…”
  • “I’m all for dressing up… but, how do you wear this?”
  • “If I see another couple holding hands, I’ll… I’ll-”
  • “Young love, isn’t it sweet?”
  • “Who did you get all these roses for?”
  • “I don’t love you, I’m just here for the chocolate.”
  • “So, let me get this right, you want me to be a stand in to make the person you like jealous?”
  • “Valentines? Pft!”
  • “That’s the least romantic thing anyone has ever said to me…”
  • “What are you doing? Why are you on one knee? Get up! Get up!”
  • “My mum gave me a rose because she felt sorry for me.”
  • “Look, you can buy me all the chocolates in the world, I still won’t go out with you.”
  • “A diamond ring? I appreciate the offer… but don’t you think this is a bit… excessive?”
Beauty and the Beast isn't what Tumblr's been saying it is.

I can completely get over Emma Watson being Belle for the sheer amount of representation that’s in the film. What representation?

 Let’s begin (spoiler alert!):

1. Black People in France. Yes, honey. For the first time in my life, I walked into a widely released period piece that doesn’t ignore the existence of black people. Not as mere servants and slaves, but as actual fucking court members and townspeople. Also, interracial couples. Y'ALL.

 2. Le Fou. I was concerned about this, but he actually undergoes character development. He eventually abandons Gaston and has a change of heart (Disney-style, but I’ll take it). The scene with him “dancing with another man” at the end is led up to- it’s not just random. It doesn’t send the message that gay people are stupid and deserve to be mistreated (Mrs. Potts literally tells him he deserves better), which were my main concerns for this film. TL;DR, the LeFou plotline isn’t what Tumblr made it out to be, I promise.

 3. The Gender Fluid Character. There is a scene in a which a character normalizes a man in a dress in a positive way. I was expecting him to be mocked, but this doesn’t happen! (Also, I believe this is the same character LeFou dances with at the end).

 4. Belle teaches a child to read/ LeFou realizes he can’t read. Watson aside, the actual perils of living in 17th century France are explored, like the Plague, and also the importance of literacy. As children’s literacy is very important to me, I LOVED this.

There’s more, but I think the representation needs to be supported (listen, I almost never see myself in a period piece, I was expecting this cast to be vanilla as hell) and Disney needs to know that we want more of it.

ALSO: to the white and non-black POC who straight up lied about the representation in this film, I SEE YOU.

Peter Cushing on whether or not he really gets into the roles he portrays. (x)

Cushing was always known to portray his characters with absolute sincerity and detail, so much so that when he played the role of Dr. Frankenstein he went to his doctor to ask him what was the most convincing way of dissecting a brain, etc. The man always had the utmost respect for his audience and has stated that, “You cannot make a film […] without integrity. To make the audiences believe in you, you must believe utterly in what you are doing.”

  • What he says: I'm fine
  • What he means: love triangles completely swamp the film industry and are an extremely overused trope meanwhile actual non monogamous relationships are hardly ever shown because they make monogamous people uncomfortable™ because they think polyamory and polygamy are the same thing but in the popular 80s film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, we see three teenagers who never get envious or possessive (except over a car) and take care of one another without making Cameron feel like the third wheel when they could of easily made jokes about that and we need more poly or hell even just healthy friendship triads that work desperately because they exist in real life.

But you have know idea how much the team at Pixar researched about Mexican culture. From my visit to Mexico music was a huge part of the culture and musicians used the guitar alot. Unfortunately Guillermo del Toro's (producer of BOL) movies haven't been doing well. And (director of BOL) Jorge isn't barely known. Also coco is Co directed and written by Adrian Molina. Someone of Latino origin. I'm sure he understands the culture. Using the same holiday isn't really a rip off.

I have no issue with Pixar doing a well researched film on Dia de Los Muertos. My problem is that Disney and Pixer outright passed on A Book of Life and then decided “never mind we will do it” and then couldn’t even be bothered to hire an actual Mexican director. And then decided to have a plot very similar to The Book of Life, a film they, again, rejected because it would not get interest in America.

I am also not going to just forget the fact Disney grossly tried to copyright “Dia de Los Muertos”, they literally tried to copyright a Mexican Holiday so they could make money of it. It would mean actual Mexicans would have to pay Disney to use Dia de los Muertos. This is gross. It would be like a Mexican film company trademarking Christmas.

I am Latina myself. There is a difference between being Latino and being Mexican in this case. Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican Holiday and they should have hired an actual Mexican director to actually do the project.

Again I am not going to stop people from watching this. Am I glad to see our cultures getting more attention, yeah. But I’m also not going to let Disney get away with what they did just because of whom they are. We need to hold companies accountable.

This isn’t about Pixar not being able to make a film like this. It is about the shady history behind this film and Disney’s treatment of A Book of Life before practically ripping it off.

Thoughts on “Logan” (Spoilers Ahead!!)

  • Logan is a lot of things: a western, another sequel, a comic-book film, and just a downright great film in general. I can’t think of any other way to say goodbye to both Hugh Jackman and his version of Wolverine than this. The story, script, acting, cinematography, and score all perfectly blend together to help the film transcend above most others in the comic-book/superhero genre. Logan is also the best X-Men or Wolverine film hands down, and that’s including X2 and Deadpool.
  • Both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart give fantastic final performances as their characters, bringing a sense of the pair truly becoming like father and son. The way their characters have changed since the very first X-Men is astounding, and they should both feel very proud for the work they put into this film and all the other films before it. (Well, maybe not Origins.)
  • Dafne Keen, the young actress who portrays Laura, is so perfectly cast it’s unreal! Not only is she capable of holding her own against greats like Jackman and Stewart, she can do it all without even speaking a single word for 2/3 of the movie! Her body language and facial expressions perfectly convey everything her character is thinking or feeling, you don’t need for her to speak to know what’s going on with her. Also, she’s a surprise but welcome Lantix and Spanish representation!
  • The film is rated R for a reason people! Do not take your children to see this film unless they are of age, I don’t care how much they like Wolverine! The film is possibly even more violent than Deadpool was, with it’s more grounded approach having more of a traumatic impact than Deadpool’s tongue-in-cheek humor influencing it’s violence. There’s a lot of limbs being sliced off in this movie, and even a disturbing scene where a family of nice farmers is murdered by a younger clone of Logan shortly after they offer him, Charles, and Laura a place to stay. (Like, it’s pretty fucking horrifying.)
  • The story is also much darker and tragic than the previous X-Men films, tackling themes of growing old and mortality that are very much a reflection of what so many of us go through with our loved ones. I won’t sugar-coat it guys, it’s extremely hard taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. It’s very difficult and draining both physically and emotionally for us and the person suffering. Logan taking care of Charles in the film is a perfect example of this.
  • Quite possibly the most tragic thing about Logan is that we learn the X-Men are dead because Xavier kills them. It’s an accident of course, his degenerative brain disease causing him to have seizures that also produces deadly psychic shockwaves, but it’s still sad and horrible nonetheless.
  • Also when you think about it, Logan actually takes place in the new timeline Logan helped create in Days of Future Past. That means all that effort to save mutantkind was pretty much wasted.. Logan can’t catch a fucking break can he?
  • The main villain of the film, Dr. Zander Rice, is the only part of the film I disliked. The secondary antagonists like Donald Pierce and X-24 held much more weight and were definitely more impactful than Rice, one being the leader of a cyborg security squad and the other literally serving as a physical representation of Logan’s animalistic “Wolverine” side.
  • “Family” and “Legacy” play a huge part in Logan’s plot, specifically when it comes to the character’s relationship with Laura. She is the product of his DNA being used to essentially recreate him to create the perfect soldier, but this also makes her his biological daughter and as such she offers him something he’s never truly had before. This comes full circle in Logan’s final moments before his death, where he tells her that even though she’s like him that she shouldn’t be what they made her to be. Though she is like him in so many ways, Logan wants her to live as a better person than he could have ever been.
  • His final words, “So this is what it feels like..,” can be interpreted as both him finally being able to experience death or as him finally being able to see some part of him become something good.

Logan gets a 10/10

Will Mexico Get Half of Its Territory Back?
The United States appropriated a huge chunk of the country in 1848. Americans seem to forget that, but some Mexicans are trying to get justice.
By Enrique Krauze

This is  peak subversive cultural marxism.

The United States owes Mexico and itself an honest reconsideration of its first imperial war, not only in its schools and universities but also in its museums and books. Hollywood and Broadway, which have always played an important role in shaping the American historical consciousness, should take up the issue.

Films, documentaries and memorable TV series have helped to modify the memory of two original sins, slavery and racism against African-Americans, and, with somewhat lesser attention perhaps, the racist slaughter and repression of the American Indians. A third sin should be added to these: the aggression against Mexico and the plundering of its territory.

These people want to make Americans feel guilt over their own history as a kind of original sin that can never be washed off - obviously with real life policy resulting from this (see the title) in mind.

This kind of subversion needs to be opposed more than anything else.

like i don’t even know how it could happen and what’s gonna happen if ever and IF it could even be as good as the first one

but i’m just desperately feeling the need for a beauty and the beast sequel you know

  • first things first i need it to have a new title because he is not a beast!!!
  • i literally want to see more belle and prince adam being together damn it, it was literally too short in the film
  • lefou and stanley together
  • i wan’t backstory about cogsworth and the woman in the film (or did i miss it?)
  • basically i just want to see the human castle people + belle and prince adam, and belle’s dad living in the castle
  • I JUST REALLY WANT TO SEE BELLE AND ADAM TOGETHER OK i would pay to watch the next movie just to see them be together and fight about books and be cute and couple-y and in love pls i need good things in life
  • dan stevens was supposed to be naked in the transformation scene i want justice
Let’s talk about Mordo

You know what I love about Mordo? You know, besides his wonderful arc in Doctor Strange, besides the fact that Chiwetel Ejiofor played him wonderfully. Besides the fact that I now have another black character to stan for.

It’s the fact that Mordo, by simply existing as a black man within this new narrative, pretty much destroys the MCU’s favorite excuse for not giving love to Black characters (and really, every fandom is guilty of this).

How many times have people said, “Well, I don’t look at the main characters because the villains are SO much more interesting”? Even though the “heroes” are given plenty of love in fandom spaces…but only if they’re white. People love Thor, and Captain America and Iron Man, but that same love is NEVER extended towards Falcon, or Heimdall, or War Machine. And when these characters (specifically black characters) are brought up, people always have the SAME excuses.

“They’re just not that interesting”

Despite Phil Coulson and Clint Barton (two characters who had very little to do in their respective roles besides dying/being mind controlled) having a huge fandom following post-Avengers.

We’ve had black villains/antagonists in the MCU (see Raina, Mike Peterson, and  Korath the accuser) but those characters NEVER get the same love as Killgrave, or Loki. And when this issue is brought up people always have the same excuses:

“Korath was a one and done villain, no need to invest in him.”

“Mike and Raina were on TV shows, if they were on big budget films then it would be different” (despite Killgrave being on Netflix, and still receiving more love than either of them).

But now, we have Mordo. A black character/antagonist who is not only well acted, well-written, and interesting, but he’s also poised to be an important part of the MCU mythos moving forward. He has all the makings of a three-dimensional character (his views are well defined, and he has a code that he sticks to.)

And people are straight up ignoring him. He’s essesntially become the fandom’s new Rhodey (a wonderful black character who is ignored in favor of everything else…in the case of Doctor Strange, that “everything else” would be a sentient piece of cloth.

And no, the excuse of Mordo being “badly written” (which I disagree with wholeheartedly) is not a sufficient excuse either. Not when fandom goes out of its way to assign intricate backstories to random characters (take Darcy Lewis, for example)

So, thank you Mordo. Thank you for providing another wonderful example of the MCU fandom’s fuckery, and providing a perfect retort to their tired old “Villains are just more interesting.”

Well, if that were true, why am I not swimming in Mordo love?

Why is Mordo either ignored within fan spaces, OR completely stripped of his nuance and character traits in order to easily vilify him?

Oh…yeah. That’s right.

I honestly find it ridiculous how conditioned general audiences are to Marvels way of making movies. I mean it’s not like ensemble movies have been being made for decades, but I guess they needed stand alone films for every character so the audience could care about what happens to them. Does every X-Men character need their own movies to make them good? The Oceans franchise? Fast and furious? Movies like The Hateful Eight and The Magnificent Seven? Lord of the Rings? Star Trek? What about Rogue One? Hell even Guardians of the Galaxy made a group film work without solos.

Justice League only has three of its main characters who haven’t had their own movie, half of the team will have already been in at least two movies before JL comes out. And you fucking know that if dc had done individual films first everyone would just be bitching about how they’re copying Marvel.

And honestly having the Justice League early on makes a shit ton more sense business wise because if you look at marvels box office, most of phase 1 and the latest origin films are the ones that make the least amount of money. But, if say Antman had come out after his appearance in Civil War, you can bet that it would have made a considerable amount more money. People would have already seen him in a huge movie that everyone was going to see no matter who was in it. Like it’s such an easy concept, you have a huge group movie, that people will see just because it’s an event film, give characters super cool moments and make them really likeable in the group film and then people are more likely to want to see the character in theatre when their own movie comes out.

Marvel is great at what it does, there is no denying that. But can we stop trying to make everything the same? That’s how superhero fatigue starts. If every single superhero movie that comes out is the exact same tone and format as the others people are going to get bored eventually. At the moment we have such a wide array of styles but people just can’t seem to accept any differences. Why do people constantly need to tear one universe down to prop another one up?

I would like to work with more women. People have been saying the last couple of weeks that “There aren’t enough films by women and there should be more female directors,” but they need to go and pay for tickets to go and see these films made by women otherwise it just won’t happen.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan directed by women filmography:

Bleak House dir. Susanna White & Justin Chadwick (2005) TV
The Greatest dir. Shana Feste (2009)
An Education dir. Lone Scherfig (2009)
Suffragette dir. Sarah Gavron (2015)
Mudbound dir. Dee Rees (2017)
Collateral dir. S.J. Clarkson (2017) TV

Obviously I’m by no means some “anti-essjaydubbleyoo” type, but I truly think 95+% of fandom social justice blogs are full of shit. Rather, they bring up real things, but they bring up bad examples or say things in the wrong ways, ie: to convince people not to ship bad ships, you see people bringing up how Jaws impacted the outlook of sharks. If you see no difference in the impact of the canon material of a massively successful film and a non-canon, read by five people fanfiction by some no-name Internet teenager wrote, you seriously need to rethink some things. And people getting more offended by some, once again, no-name Internet person headcanoning some questionable character with the same mental health problems or gender identity as them because, zomg, bad representation!!111, than the many times that evil characters have canonically been written or coded as belonging to those groups when the people writing them don’t is just silly. I think some people need a serious lesson in distribution of power of influence. Millions of people watch movies, but how many people read fanfiction? How is Joe Rando on the streets is going to know about some no-name Internet person’s headcanons, let alone agree with them? I’ve heard of fanfiction that didn’t suit well with me (I must admit, I’m not really a reader it myself and the primary representation of it I’ve seen is the Internet personalities I follow doing joke readings of things about them personally and whatnot, so they weren’t exactly quality pieces, I suppose) and headcanons that I didn’t have great feelings about, but only canon material really gets to me, greatly because it’s what has the greater power of influence.

my moms watching this white savior movie called McFarland USA about a white guy who starts a track team with a bunch of latino students who are “at risk” and i’m like mom i know its a true story but like i hate movies like this and she got all mad and said “these kids were doing nothing, so youre saying a white man cant help them because hes white” and i told her that that wasn’t true and i never said that. I said it was because it’s all we see in film. Freedom Writers, The Blind Side, The Last Samurai, Radio, Hardball, Finding Forrester, Dances with Wolves and so many more movies have obvious white savior narratives and we never see narratives and stories about our own people rising up without the help of white people, which makes it seem like we can’t prosper without white people helping us when that has never been the case. She told me that if we want movies about it so bad we need to make them and i told her that we do, but we never see them in theaters or hit the mainstream because white directors and white businessmen dominate the film industry and they only give us what they want to give us. For once, I want to see a story that focuses on the lives of the people of color. I don’t give a shit about a teacher’s marriage falling apart because she’s helping poc students, i don’t care about a coaches rocky life while trying to help poc students. I want to hear our peoples stories. I want them to follow us around. I want us to be the center of our own stories.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #144 - Coraline

Spoilers below

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: Blu-ray

1) Director Henry Selick is probably best known for his work as director on The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I personally think (and this may be considered blasphemy) that Coraline is his magnum opus. More on that coming up.

2) In both horror and animation, a well done score can boost the tone of the film remarkably. And composer Bruno Coulais is able to turn in a score notable for its subtlety and tone boosting. It is able to be ominous, child like, fantastical, and creepy all at the same time. That is actually a perfect way of describing this film.

3) Animation fans with eagle eyes will notice that the movers in the beginning in the film are the “Ranft Brothers”. Joe Ranft was a legendary animator, known mostly for his work at Pixar until his tragic death. His brother is a noteworthy animator too, Jerome Ranft. The movers are animated in the likenesses of the brothers (you even get a glance at a name tag reading “Jerome”), with Joe being the mover who gets the crummy tip and Jerome Ranft voicing his counterpart.

4) Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones.

Coraline is not your typical animated heroine, which is exactly why she is such an amazing character. She’s a bit of a snot actually. She’s bratty, shown to be mean, overdramatic, sarcastic, winey, and it is all amazing! Because she’s not ONLY those things! She’s also fun, intelligent, clever, imaginative and adventurous. For most of the film she is at odds with her parents but she risks her film for them because, well, they’re her parents! The best way to describe Coraline is as a kid. An honest portrayal of a kid! Not totally one thing or another and not nearly as oblivious as some people may expect. Dakota Fanning (who was attached to the role when the film was meant to be live action even) is perfect in the part, able to portray all of Coraline’s qualities with wonderful ease while totally losing herself in the role. Coraline is the title character which means we - as the audience - NEED to be invested in her for this film to be any good. And the filmmakers did an excellent job making sure we were just that: invested.

5)

Coraline [after seeing The Cat]: “Not talking, huh?”

6) This film is a little more adult than your typical animated fare, something which is established pretty early when Coraline refers to Wybie as her stalker. It is a decision in tone and content which works wonderfully for the film.

7) Wybie.

We don’t get to see much of Wybie in the film. Well, that’s not entirely true. We don’t get to see much of Wybie compared to CORALINE, who is the lead and is therefore in every scene except for the one that plays during the opening credits. But in the time we see him it is very clear that this is the neighborhood weird kid. And it’s done accurately too! He’s not the butt of any joke, he’s not someone who’s supposed to be a creep or a plot device. Just like Coraline, he’s an honest representation of the kids out in the world who are sort of strange.

8) Dang, Coraline can be mean!

Coraline [after someone calls for Wyborne ‘Wybie’s’ name]: “Oh I definitely heard someone, Why Were You Born.”

Like, sure the dude is sorta weird, but he’s been pretty nice so far. But that’s part of Coraline’s character, and we see that side of her go on a bit of a transformation throughout the film.

9) Film is first and foremost a visual way of storytelling and animation can do that better than live action can if done right. Through animation you are able to portray the character of things (not just your characters but places and items) through design. Through your visuals. Take this film for example: the real world is marked by a more subdued color palette and look. Everything - including Coraline’s parents - look grey, tired, and worn down. Something which creates an immediate visual conflict through Coraline, who from the very start gives off these incredible vibrant and lively colors. It is a visual conflict which is reflective of a textual one that works wonders for the film.

10) It would have been easy to make Coraline a total brat and her parents good parents who try their hardest, but Mom and Dad aren’t perfect either. Mom particularly shows us where Coraline got her attitude, sarcasm, and occasional brattiness from (and I know “brat” has negative connotations to it but I love Coraline so when I call her a “brat” I’m doing so with love because that trait is something I think is a great writing decision for her character). It also gets to the idea that a friend of mine told me once: parents are just kids who have kids. Parents don’t know what they’re doing when they have kids, they’re making it up as they go along. Which means they’re not perfect. They can get tired and impatient and mean too, and showing that in this film continues its honesty streak. That honesty - in relationships in characters - is what helps make it so great.

11) I can’t IMAGINE what animating the tunnel sequence was like.

I mean stop motion animation is moving something a tiny bit, then taking a picture. And you repeat that process over and over again with puppets until you have a moving image like this one. So the tunnel on its own - with the lighting and the fabric - must have been a pain to animate. But then Coraline walking through it? And jostling it around, but the animators have to make sure that jostling is perfect in every frame? I do NOT have the patience for stop motion animation, I tell you. Or the fingers. I don’t have delicate fingers.

12) The Other World.

Going with the idea of visual conflict, there is immediately more of a peace between Coraline’s vibrant colors and the creative rainbow like Other World she finds herself in. This resolves most of the visual conflict ON THE SURFACE, but everywhere there are these black buttons. These little dark specs that just liter the world in hard to see places, things which can easily get lost in the magic of it all but are always there. Hiding in plain sight.

The Other World - both in its dream and nightmare phases - show off Selick’s wild imagination. The best animation directors have a penchant for imaginative visuals, using the medium to do things live action couldn’t (something I observed in my The Book of Life post back in November). Selick as not only animator but production designer on this film is able to create some wonderful and memorable images of dream like fantasy which makes the transition to nightmarish scenes in the back half of the film all the more powerful. It is truly wonderful.

13) According to IMDb:

The band They Might Be Giants wrote 10 songs for the movie, but a change in tone from a musical to a darker production meant that all but one was cut; a scene in which Coraline’s other father sings along with a piano features John Linnell’s voice. The band has said they will release the other songs created for the movie in other projects, including albums.

14) It is worth noting that the initial dinner Coraline has with her Other Parents is more of a Norman Rockwell, classic/idyllic image than her dinner at home (in both the food served and the look of the place). This relates to the film’s almost critique (I say almost because I do not know if it was intended, but it very well could have been) on expectations vs reality. How we have let certain fantasies shape our expectations in the real world and if we find something that fits those expectations perfectly it’s probably a lie.

15) Teri Hatcher shines in this film, particularly as Other Mother. There are three sort of phases to her performance as Other Mother which I will discuss individually as they occur. The first of these is the initial encounter with Other Mother. The sweet sing-song tones filled with love and warmth which can trick someone into thinking its honesty but when you listen there is DEFINITELY something false about it. A faux kindness which can catch you off guard. No one is really that kind, that nice. That’s the face you put on for company when it’s over and not one you can sustain forever.

16) Ian McShane as Mr. Bobinsky.

I observed in my recap for the Selick directed The Nightmare Before Christmas that the film was able to create unique characterizations within seconds of introducing us to said characters which lasted consistently throughout the rest of the film. In this film - especially with Coraline’s neighbors - the same holds true. We are able to get a sense of what kind of fun weirdo Mr. Bobinsky is within seconds of meeting him, someone who’s a bit of a nut but also a generally nice guy, and that lasts through the end of the film. Ian McShane does a wonderful job as Bobinsky and out of the three neighbors (Bobinksy and the two actresses), Bobinsky is my personal favorite.

It is also worth observing Bobinsky’s character design here. As I said before, animation tells you a lot through its visuals about a character. Small elements in Bobinsky’s design make him a bit more human than say your average Prince Charming or seven dwarfs. The ratty shirt, the unkempt body hair, the big gut. All of it gives Bobinsky not only a sense of character but a sense of realism, as life is not always as pretty as we expect. This plays DIRECTLY into Other Bobinsky’s appearances, notably how he is better dressed AND his torso is upside down. Instead of having a large stomach, he has a large chest suggesting strength. THAT is your fairytale version of Bobinsky right there and - like everything else in the Other World - it’s a lie.

17) Similarly, the two actress neighbors of Miriam Forcible and April Spink are established as weird but lovable dog ladies as soon as we meet them.

I mentioned before how this film plays with the ideas of expectations vs reality, and that becomes pretty clear after we meet Coraline’s neighbors. This is not some fairytale for Coraline. In a fairytale Mr. Bobinsky would run an incredible jumping mouse circus, not be a vaguely crazy man trying to create a jumping mouse circus (I say with love). And the pair of Miriam and April would be elegant world famous actresses, not two washed up has-beens (I say with love). But you know what? This is EXACTLY what they are in the Other World! The fairytale versions of themselves that is meant to be exactly what Coraline wants. And just like the change in design for Bobinsky in the Other World, Miriam and April get similar beautifications.

Now they’re as pretty as any fairytale princess with a waistline to match, because that’s the “better” version of this isn’t it? Except it’s not real. It’s a lie, meant to entrap you and keep you from having a good REAL life. I sort of love that about this film.

Coraline [after Other Mother asks her to get her father]: “You mean my other father?”

Other Mother: “You’re better father, dear.”

Red flag! Red flag! That’s a creepy thing to say Other Mother! (It is also here when we start noticing the fakeness of Other Mother’s nice voice.)

19) I keep mentioning how you can detect a slight hint of fakeness in Other Mother’s face. The hint is not so slight in Other Father’s voice. There’s nothing real there, nothing honest. Just fake honey that’s meant to entice Coraline. And I think that’s because Other Mother is the mastermind and she’s making Other Father BE like that. It’s a nice choice on the part of the filmmakers and actor John Hodgman I think.

Other Mother [about Other ‘Silent’ Wybie]: “I thought you’d like him more if he spoke a little less. So I fixed him.”

21) Hmm, wonder which of her parents Coraline takes after…

Mom: “I did not call [Mr. Bobinsky] crazy, Coraline. He’s drunk.”

22) The. Freaking. CAT!!!!

Can I just say first and foremost: I love Keith David. Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog is my favorite Disney villain of all time in no small part because of Keith David’s voice over work as the character. And his role as The Cat is just as good. I love The Cat, which is saying a lot because I’m a dog person. David is able to work with the writing and make the character both wise and mischievous but in a unique, dark, sarcastic way. He’s also the first hint of trouble and the only character other than Coraline to travel between worlds. The animators do an excellent job making sure The Cat’s characterization is clear and consistent, even when he can’t speak in the real world. He’s an excellent addition to the film and a wonderful companion to our hero.

23) Everything gets real freaky real fast.

Right after Other Mother asks to put buttons in Coraline’s eyes (or, more accurately, REPLACE her eyes with buttons) this film turns into a horror film. Full on Stephen King, Poltergeist, “Stranger Things” horror! (Not that I’ve seen or read any of those things because I scare too easily.) And it is born not from jump scares or gore but from tone. The atmosphere becomes notably chilly and ominous and everything just becomes so FREAKY. THAT is why I think this is Henry Selick’s magnum opus. Because he can be as scary as he want to be!

24) For me, one of the most powerful scenes in the movie is when Coraline walks around Other World.

The simple decision to have her walk through a white abyss then find herself back in the Other World the Other Mother created just really works for me. It’s a simple yet elegant concept.

25) Other Mother’s truer form (her true form comes later).

This is when Teri Hatcher and Other Mother start really shining as villains. There is still an attempt to be motherly, to be warm, but the creepy factor is turned up. There’s a sick playfulness there at times as well as terrifying anger. But this form is most marked by the cold reservedness. The chilling tones the Other Mother uses when taking to Coraline about the game they’re going to play. It’s crazy freaky and I love it for that!

26) There is no scene quite as haunting or quite as sad as when Coraline talks with the ghost kids.

Through its use of haunting visuals, eerie sound design, excellent writing, and top notch voice acting from the child actors, this one scene tells you perfectly what exactly the stakes are for this film. What exactly will happen to Coraline if she can’t succeed. And it’s terrifying.

27) I did not remember this line from before and the way Coraline describes the ghost kids to Wybie had me laughing my butt off.

Coraline [about the doll]: “It used to look like this pioneer girl, then Huck Finn Junior, then this ‘Little Rascals’ chick with hair ribbons…”

I don’t know why, but something about hearing her call the kid, “Huck Finn Junior,” is just wildly funny to me.

28) The entire idea of the eyes of the dead children being hidden in the “three wonders” Other Mother crafted for Coraline is not only an excellent way of juxtaposing some of the dream like imagery from earlier with its now nightmarish quality, but it also gives plot relevance to scenes which could have easily just been entertaining and excellent eye candy (Bobinsky’s circus, the garden, and the theater scene). It helps push the writing of this film from good to great.

29) So Coraline thinks she has lost her game with Other Mother and she’s going to end up like the ghost children, when a dead rat with the last eye falls in front of her and The Cat shows up.

The Cat: “I think I’ve mentioned that I don’t like rats at the best of times.”

Coraline: “You may have mentioned it.”

I love these guys.

30) Can we just take a second to appreciate how incredibly frightening Other Mother’s true form is?

Teri Hatcher gets to totally let lose as an actress with this final form of the Other Mother. There’s no more fake niceness, no more hiding, no more tricks. Just sheer, terrifying villainy in all its glory. It’s so creepy and evil and I love it!

32) I find the web that Coraline falls into with Other Mother perhaps the most frightening visual of the whole film. I love it.

But the way Other Mother shouts after Coraline makes her way through the door is almost equally as terrifying to me. Just the desperation and madness in her voice gives me chills.

Other Mother: “Don’t leave me! Don’t leave me! I’ll die without you!”

33) It is a classic rule of suspense, an almost Hitchcockian rule (although I don’t think he invented it), that the story is never over when you think it is.

The entire final “battle” with Other Mother’s disembodied hand, how it drags Coraline away, how Wybie has to come and save the day but it still keeps going, is all a great final horror movie moment. Just the creeping crawly uncatchable-ness of a spider and how you have to work really hard to squash it. I love that.

34) The final scene of the film resolves the visual conflict Coraline was having with the real world. Everything - hear parents, the neighbors, the flowers - is a bit brighter. A bit closer to her but not so perfectly as the Other World. Things are resolved, but everything is still in the real world. Everything is still honest and it may not be perfect, but it is a happy ending.

It has been a while since I’ve watched Coraline so in all honesty I forgot how good it was. It is an excellent piece of not only animated filmmaking but filmmaking period. The visuals and imagination is incredible, it is truly frightening at times through its use of atmosphere and (again) the visuals at hand, the writing is top notch - ESPECIALLY when it comes to our titular lead - and the voice acting is there to match (Hatcher and Fanning being the clear standouts). It is an incredible film I think everyone should see. It’s just that good.

zeible  asked:

Why is it that Orlok is so much scarier than other vampyres? IDK I guess it's a personal thing but I like to ponder why the really, really, REALLY old version of the vampyre in film is the scariest one, in spite of changing sensibilities in what constitutes horror, improved effects, and the fact that his film is silent and most people hear it with a version with a silly dissonant soundtrack. (Sorry if this is totally random but I'm obsessed with Nosferatu and NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS)

I am always here for random vampire discussion!

My opinion: Orlok is so much scarier because he’s obviously monstrous, but still needs humanity in some way. Plus, the character design is just so fantastic. The costume and makeup! Unsettling, but you can still see the traces of a person in there.

Also, the practical effects and b&w footage help Nosferatu be much more unnerving, because your brain fills in the gaps. While I am always impressed by what filmmakers can achieve with digital FX, I will always believe that practical FX have a place in horror, and just because you *can* do something digitally in post-production doesn’t mean you should.

Finally, let’s face it: Murnau had a fantastic eye for filming unsettling images.

Your comment about the “silly dissonant soundtrack” leads me to ask: have you heard Jill Tracy and the Malcontent Orchestra’s soundtrack for Nosferatu? If not, you must give it a listen.

anonymous asked:

Ty, could you rec me some movies and/or tv shows you like? :)

YEAH i’m totally down!! I don’t really watch TV though, so this will be a movie rec list! (Also I haven’t watched a lot of movies recently, so a majority of these are from my teenage years)

Movies:

  • The Fountain (2006): a layered story that interlocks three different timelines/worlds. One takes place during the 16th century where a conquistador is trying to find the Tree of Life in central America, hoping to save Queen Isabella, the second takes place in the 2000s, about a doctor coming to terms with the impending death of his wife, and the third is in the far future, where a lone man is traveling through space with a magic tree. All three timelines star the same two actors, Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, and the significance of that can be interpreted in multiple ways. The movie doesn’t have a solid Hollywood story, so the ending may feel rather unhappy, but the visual themes, music, and acting are amazing. It may seem like a typical “middle age white man pain” story on the outside, but it’s executed well and I personally really enjoy it.
  • The Hours (2002): based on a novel of the same name, this movie is another triple-layered story. This story revolves around Virginia Wolfe and her novel Mrs. Dalloway: one timeline follows Wolfe trying to write the novel, the second timeline follows a 50s housewife reading the novel, and the third is a 2000s re-telling of the novel. This movie could very likely be considered slow and is practically made up of all soliloquies, but again, superb acting and an overall very emotional journey. There are quite a lot of gay subthemes, with the modern Mrs. Dalloway character (played by Meryl Streep) in a long-standing and committed relationship with another woman, and there are one-sided feelings in the 50s housewife story (the housewife is played by Juliane Moore). There is a weird, potentially incestuous, kiss between Virginia Wolfe (played by Nicole Kidman) and her sister(?), so warnings for that and also lots of talk of suicide (as per accurate of Wolfe). It’s also unfortunately another all-white cast.
  • The Tale of Two Sisters (2003): a Korean horror movie about two sisters who return home after an extended stay in a mental institution. Their home suffers under a subtly oppressive and supernatural energy, and there are a lot of mysteries creeping about. Complicated relationships are slowly revealed between the sisters, their father, dead mother, and step mother. This story has a lot of twists, and in its center, I actually think it’s more of a tragedy rather than a true horror. I know the surface level of “psychologically troubled sisters in a horror movie” seems very cringe-worthy, but surprisingly the psychoses are treated as a separate entity from the supernatural elements (even if the lines are a bit ambiguous and blurry, there is still a line). The acting in this is amazing and makes much, much more sense when watched through a second time.
  • Doubt (2008): the screen adaptation of a stage play, Doubt is a very thematic story revolving around a Catholic boarding school and a molestation allegation. The lead nun (played by Meryl Streep) is suspicious of the main pastor (played by Philip Seymour) because of the close relationship he shares with the first Black child to be integrated to their school. The story is fairly simple, but the amount of psychological tension really drives the story, and the viewer’s prejudices are really put to the test. The actors deliver incredible performances, with an amazing, surprise role from Viola Davis as the child’s mother. The movie really leaves you questioning yourself by the end.
  • Unleashed (2005): my favorite American Jet Li film, and one of the few US movies that actually takes advantage of his incredible acting skills. This story is about a mentally disabled cage fighter, who is kept like a dog by his gang boss. Through circumstances, he gains his freedom and is saved by a blind pianist (played by Morgan Freeman), who teaches him how to live an ordinary life. Of course, his past comes to haunt him and there’s a lot of action scenes, but the core of the movie is very sweet. I also personally have a soft spot for Asian/Black co-leading actors, and movies that focus on positive relationships between the two groups (which Jet Li has also done in Romeo Must Die but the story in that one is kinda lacking). I think what’s incredible about this movie– as a childhood Jet Li fan– is seeing how his acting and personification of the character translates into the martial arts choreography. For someone who rose to stardom as “the elegant fighter,” Jet Li delivers amazing emotional impact as an unhinged and almost beast-like fighter.
  • Saving Face (2004): I realize most of my movies are heavy I’m so sorry, so here’s a light-hearted movie to balance things out lmao. Saving Face is a Chinese-American lgbt film, starring Michelle J. Krusiec as a lesbian surgeon. Out to her friends, but closeted to her mother and their general Chinese community, the main character falls into the responsibility of caring for her aging mother– who has mysteriously become pregnant. The mother-daughter duo must learn to live together, reconcile their relationship, and deal with losing face together in the light of their unconventional relationships. While the story is mainly focused on the parental relationship, the main character does have a relationship with another woman that receives significant screentime and development. A feel-good film that does have a lot of bilingual scenes, so watching with subtitles will be needed for non-Mandarin speakers.

Animated Movies:
(obviously I’ve seen more animated movies than the ones on this list but I don’t see people talk about these films often so I’m gonna rec them)

  • Wolf Children (2012): the story of a mother who’s left with raising her two, half-wolf children. The movie follows her meeting a werewolf, falling in love with him, losing him, and raising the kids from infancy to middle-school age. The animation house is the same group that produced The Girl Who Lept Through Time and Summer Wars, so the quality is top-notch. The story, while generally slice-of-life, obviously has some supernatural elements to it due to the kids being werewolves, but is still able to retain the evocative nature of a parental coming-of-age story. There are a lot of themes of love and loss, so it’s not a very feel-good film, but the ending leaves quite the impact on the viewer.
  • Tokyo Godfathers (2003): a dramedy movie from Satoshi Kon, this film follows the story of three homeless people: a teenage girl and two middle-aged adults, an alcoholic father and a former drag-queen (who now identifies as a trans woman). During the Christmas holiday, the three stumble on an abandoned baby, and more or less decide to find the parents. Their journey takes them across Tokyo, through unbelievable and hilarious circumstances, and also through each of their unresolved pasts and motivations. The animation in this movie is amazing, and the story is light but human enough to strike at your emotions. Hana-san, the trans woman, may come across initially as a caricature, but she is treated with respect and humanity just like the other two characters.
{Special} College!AU Amber
  • major: film production
  • minor: visual arts
  • sports: she’s on the uni’s women’s basketball team but outside of school she teaches taekwondo to kids !!
  • clubs: aspiring filmmakers society, girls who skate (all female skateboarding team), big brother big sister (she’s the big sister to a 6th grade girl who cut her hair short because amber inspired her), actually amber is in a lot of clubs because she has 4546932 friends and they invite her to all their clubs and she can never say no rofl
  • amber,,,,to put it bluntly is the most popular person on the college campus. like,,,,,,everyone knows who she is everyone from newly entered freshmen to people who graduated like three years ago
  • why? because she’s so damn bright and positive that it’s hard not to notice her and well,,,,she’s probably the first person to befriend you because she’s just so outgoing and she loves loves LOVES making friends
  • and like amber is friends with jackson who is the other most popular person on campus and the two of them are always outside shooting hoops or being dumb on the quad and like ,,, everyone wants to be their friend because they always look like they’re having fun
  • but amber is also friends with the queen of the campus aka krystal who seems so cold and unapproachable from far away but somehow she’s always managing to smile and laugh around amber
  • and amber,,,,she just has a way of pulling everyone in towards her with an addicting laugh and an adorable smile and just this dorky, lovable personality
  • she’s a film productions major and like she became passionate about making movies after spending time filming skate videos and vlogs for her youtube channel (which btw is still a thing she does. her vlog ‘ranting monkey’ is insanely popular like she has like 4 million subs and her instagram + twitter is always blowing up and everyone on campus is like HOLY SHIT YOU’RE INTERNET FAMOUS and amber’s like LOL NO IM NOT)
  • but yeah she thought about doing music as a career and learning to become a producer, but she decided that something about film was just more invigorating
  • and she always has a camera on her and she’s always filming and uploading things
  • like it can go from her just using her phone to film her having lunch with her friends, to her using the gopro to film her and her friends skating, to her lugging around a huge camcorder for a movie she’s making for a class
  • but she’s always alWAYS bustling with energy to film something or take photos of something like she can never stop
  • and everyone she hangs out with somehow inevitably become actors in all her skits and movies
  • and she’s always posting in the facebook group for the screenwriting majors if anyone wants to work with her for projects and she’s always like juggling 495342 things
  • people are sometimes like “amber, when do you sleep?” and she just shrugs like “i ????? don’t”
  • luna and victoria are always nagging her about staying healthy and amber’s like “ok ok ok ill eat!!!” and then she takes a bite of like luna’s salad and drinks some of victoria’s coffee and is like “see? i just had breakfast!” and they’re like aMBER
  • but it’s too late she’s skated off to her next class
  • she took visual arts as a minor mostly because she wants to be able to create more things on her own for her films because she’s basically a broke college student
  • plus all the friends she made in class all offer to like help her draw sets or make props and through visual art she became close with people in the fashion major
  • and all of them aDORE her and are always like “if you need help with a movie!!!!! tell us!!!!”
  • and amber only gets shy about things like that, when people are so straightforward with giving her help she’s like you gUYS,,,,,you’re the best but i can’t even pay you???? and they’re like no no we want to do it because you’re amazing
  • and amber like pulls her hood over her face like iM NOT
  • and it’s like the only time she gets flustered but it is sooooooo adorable
  • also she’s the certified girl crush of literally everyone on campus and it is hilarious because when the uni’s basketball teams have games
  • more girls show up to the women’s game with banners with ambers face on it and poster boards with ‘i love you unnie’ written on them and amber ,,,,,, like,,,,she looks so good in the uniform like ,,,,,, it’s heavenly
  • everyone always takes pics and a freshman even confessed to amber that they had made a photo of amber jumping to dunk their phone background and amber was like DUDE REALLY and they showed her and she like ruffled their hair like IM HONORED
  • that freshmen nearly Died because holyshit amber blessed them with a hair ruffle
  • the women’s teams coach was like ‘amber we’re going to put your face on the university’s sports homepage ok?’ and amber was like ‘what why’ and everyone was like pointing at her fanclub sitting in the bleachers like thats WHY
  • some people will sometimes talk about her behind her back because of her easygoing personality around boys and how she dresses and chooses to express herself
  • but like the rumors never go far because anyone that hears someone badmouthing amber will literally stand up for her on the spot because she’s been helpful to so many people and has become friends with even those who have a hard time being social
  • and like literally 99% of the campus has her back
  • and it’s cute she’s kind of oblivious to it because everyone does their best to make sure she doesn’t have to hear any bullshit for the way she lives her life
  • so when someone’s like “god, she’s such a fox hanging around with guys all the time” and amber’s like “who are they talking about?” literally the 10 people around her will be like “oh no one” and then proceed to be like @ the people who were rude like “get a life perhaps?”
  • once amber came into school not wearing her usual skinny jeans, vans, loose shirt combo but came in like a Suit because she was having an important dinner @ the big brother big sister program later
  • and everyone lost their shit. she wore that suit once but she got featured in the school newspaper
  • and amber has a special spot for making films that are like about life and growing up and like learning something about yourself because she really wants to make films that inspire people to be better
  • so all her professional work is always about like,,,,,,,people overcoming tough situations,,,,,,,,and she’s just a sweetheart because she finds people who are quietly struggling and says she wants to make a film about them because their struggle - and their hard work should be recognized and used as motivation for others
  • and for most people hearing someone say that, let alone offer to make a film about it, is really,,,,,,,is really touching because you realize that someone notices your efforts
  • and amber is that person. no matter what - she sees that people are trying, even when it isn’t their best, they’re trying in her eyes
  • but she hardly ever notices that she’s trying
  • and it’s that about her that you wish you could tell her,,,,,
  • and you do,,,,just not to her face???
  • instead you kinda just comment on her posts with ‘hope you’re eating well!’ ‘i appreciate everything you do!’ and of course ‘i’ll always know you’ll do your best!’
  • and tbh you don’t think much of it,,,because like other people flood her instagram and twitter with comments all the time
  • like as humble as amber is, it’s beyond obvious that she’s famous online and like,,,,,,,the only thing that makes you different from the other 40k comments is the fact that you go to uni with her
  • and you’ve actually spoken to her quite a few times because you work part-time in the uni’s gym so you see amber during basketball practice and she’s always be asking you to help her find her locker key (she has a habit of losing it)
  • and you always help,,,,,,,even if it meant staying 30-40 minutes after your shift was over because like,,,,it’s amber
  • her glowing smile and the cute way she jumps up and down when finally finding the key,,,,,it’s something that would warm your heart for hours after
  • and like most people, developing a crush on amber is pretty much a given,,,,,like it’s impossible not to fall some bit in love with her because she’s all around,,,,,an angel
  • but your crush didn’t even come from the fact that she’s so silly and adorable
  • it came from the moment you saw her sitting in the locker room, drinking energy drinks and obviously fighting to stay awake, talking on the phone and going “yeah im fine, don’t worry i slept!! ill come after practice to help you out - no no i promise im totally awake, ill see you at 9!”
  • and you couldn’t hear what the person on the other line was saying, but amber was telling them over and over that she’d be there after practice
  • and when she’d finished the call, getting up you could see her stumble a bit,,,drained of energy and when she’d walked past you you could even catch the coming in of dark circles under her eyes
  • but when she went back out onto the court, no one else seemed to notice. they all just laughed and patted her on the back and somehow amber managed to smile back and crack jokes
  • and you had wondered to yourself is there was a point that even the most sunny, vibrant people could break and get tired
  • and so,,,,in a way,,,,,you just wanted to support her. even if commenting ‘i hope you get some rest’ on a photo was all you could really do
  • but then,,,,,somehow,,,,,,amber’s finding you after your shift in the gym one day and going
  • “i see you always working here and i was wondering if i could film you a bit for a movie im doing, it’s about kids who work on campus so im also filming jinyoung from the campus bookstore and jin from the campus new channel, would you be ok with being in it?”
  • and tbh you stand there dumbfounded for like 5 min and amber’s like “heeeey helllloooooo are you listening???” and waving her hand in your face and you’re like UH
  • and you kind of don’t know how to respond because one) you haven’t ever really thought of ever being on camera especially not for something as mundane as working at your uni’s gym two) amber ,,,,, noticed you enough to ask you to be in a film of hers??? and three) being filmed by her,,,,of all people,,,,,,would you even be able to control your blushing face????
  • and you stutter a bit because you’re like “it,,,,,it’s going to be b-boring?”
  • and amber laughs like “well, that’s kinda the point!! that uni jobs are boring, but like you guys perceiver and pull through to do a job that helps a lot of other students! so dude, are you up for it?”
  • and you don’t even think you say /yes/ but amber is smiling so wide and her eyes are sparkling like stars
  • and you’re sold. you’re done. you’ll do anything for her just about then
  • and you nod
  • and amber grins and tells you she’ll be back with her camera next week
  • and you stand there for a moment, thinking to yourself,,,,,,,,
  • amber is going to film,,,,,,,,,me,,,,,
  • and for a couple days you think you must have like ???? daydreamed it
  • how could someone so popular, so sociable, and so,,,,,,,,,,so far above you decide suddenly that you - some person who’d just been in the background all the time - be worthy enough to film??/
  • and you know amber loves motivational things and whatnot but your job isn’t anything like that. you work at the gym and do stuff like get towels clean for the athletes and make sure the basketballs are inflated and sometimes clean up garbage off the bleachers
  • there’s nothing really motivational, you just need the money
  • but then - much to your surprise - amber is there just like she said she would be with a camcorder and a mic and a couple of other people all holding light equipment
  • and when she sees you, she waves and runs over
  • and it’s like you’re watching it in slow-mo, her bangs brush out of her face as she runs, her smile with the upturned corners of her lips is so distinct and radiant, and most of all her eyes,,,,,pretty big bright pools of brown,,,,,
  • all happy because of you and god your heart would break right there if it wasn’t for the fact that you were scared to death all of a sudden because of everyone else there
  • amber, the least bit bothered by the crowd of her friends, grabs your hand and is like “are you ready?? i want to shoot a short interview with you and ask some questions so i got some people together to help with lighting and one of them is from the fashion dept she can help do your makeup. we’re gonna shoot it here in the locker room, is that cool beans with you?”
  • and you’re like “uhhhhhhh”
  • and amber senses that you’re a Bit shocked and she like slaps your back playfully like “hey, i know it’s all intimidating because woooooah cameras and lights and makeup blah blah blah but it’ll be easy, just trust me ok! i never make things awkward!”
  • with a wink she nudges you forward and you’re like swallowing the lump in your throat like oK ,,,,,
  • and you sit down and suddenly there’s someone putting a mic on you and another person arranging your hair from your face and a voice asking you to close your eyes and your head is spinning but before you close your eyes you see amber from the corner of your eye
  • enthusiastically speaking to someone and she sees you, smiling again
  • and just with that you think - you can do this!!! whatever,,,,,this is ,,,,,,
  • and the interview is pretty short amber just asks how you started working here / why do you work here / and your duties
  • and you’re like “i did it for the money, i need to pay for my own books and stuff so,,,,,”
  • and amber goes “is there any other reason? like once you started working here, did something about helping out all the athletes feel gratifying? like when you hand someone a towel after practice or help the mascot into their costume?”
  • for a second you think you want to just come out and say “no” because this job is what you said before, it’s boring. there’s not big reward, nothing like working at the library or working as a TA
  • but then you look at amber again,,,,,and the moments where you stayed behind with just her to help her find the keys to her locker,,,,the moments where you’d search every corner diligently until you could find the keys that would make the girl you had the biggest crush on jump up and down in happiness
  • and before you know it you go, “there is another reason.”
  • amber’s expression gets bright and she follows up with “what’s that reason?”
  • and now you can’t help but replay all the times you got to be with her in your mind, hearing her complain about how clumsy she is, telling her that it was ok when she apologized for keeping you behind
  • and you,,,,,,,you bite your tongue because you almost say “you’re the reason”
  • but instead you go “someone special,,,,,,someone special is my reason”
  • and amber gives you a thumbs up from behind the camera and claps, saying that that’s the best answer - so touching and that the camera can stop recording and your first shoot is over
  • you sit there, as the hands reappear to take off your mic and clean off the light makeup
  • and amber comes over to tell you you did great, but her voice is fuzzy in your ears and you get up and excuse yourself
  • and as you run from the gym to the dorms you think that,,,,what’s the reason you still work at the gym? what’s the reason you keep cleaning that huge court, picking up garbage from the athletes and from the spectators
  • you already paid for all your books, you already have your scholarships
  • “amber” you say outloud,,,,,,and you can’t believe it but maybe your little crush wasn’t so little after all and you recall all the times you would stop to watch her practice, stay behind just in case she lost her keys again, feel sad if she didn’t and then get happy if she did
  • and you squat down in front of the dorm, clutching your hands to your ears and you tell yourself
  • “no, don’t do this. you can’t like her. she’s,,,,,,she’s,,,,,,,,impossible to reach.”
  • “whose impossible to reach?”
  • the voice comes from behind you and were so busy arguing w/yourself in your head that you didn’t even hear someone running after you
  • and you turn around and there’s amber,,,,,this time her smile is faltering into a frown and her eyes are filled with worry and you’re like
  • oh shit oh shit i didn’t mean to make her worried oh shit oh man oh no
  • and amber gives you a pout that basically lodges a knife into your heart and she’s like “dude you just ran off like the flash and we were all so confused, did something happen? did i do something wrong?”
  • and you’re like “n-no that’s not it it’s just-”
  • and amber steps closer and suddenly she’s only inches away, leaning toward your face and grinning, going “c’mon, tell me. don’t lie too, ill know if you’re lying i have spidey senses”
  • you don’t want to tell her but at the same time you don’t have a choice, if you don’t you’ll just end up being a mess the whole time and ruin her movie so you take a breathe and go
  • “the person who’s impossible to reach is you. the reason i still work at the gym is you. i lik-”
  • you choke a bit on the last word and look down at the ground instead of at amber’s face
  • “i like you.”
  •  it’s silent and you can basically hear yourself screaming in your brain because HERE WE GO MAKING THINGS AWKWARD JUST WHEN THE PERSON OF YOUR DREAMS ACTUALLY MAKES AN ATTEMPT TO BE YOUR FRIEND AND YOU GOTTA GO CONFESS YOUR FEELINGS WOW
  • but then you hear amber’s laugh
  • the intoxicating, contagious laugh and your eyes widen because it’s even worse than her rejecting you,,,,,she’s straight up making fun of you,,,,,,,
  • and tears start to well up in your eyes because you can’t take this,,,,but then you hear her go “im sorry- im so- sorry i didn’t mean to laugh but you ,,,,,,you looked so scared,,,,like your eyeballs might pop out of your skull and,,,,,oh wait give me a second”
  • and she wipes at her face with the sleeve of her hoodie and she’s like “ok ok, i can talk now phew. ok. well it’s a good thing you like me because guess what?”
  • you don’t look up but amber tilts your chin so you’re forced to
  • and the next thing you know there are soft lips on yours and you’re like HOLY MOTHER OF
  • and amber pulls back before you can actually Faint and proceeds to run around in a circle, crinkling her nose and going “i DID that,,,,,ok ok,,,,,,,,,,,,,,AHHHHHH”
  • and you’re like ???? why are you screaming im the one who just got spontaneously kissed
  • and amber sticks her tongue out and is like yeAH BUT I DID IT I DIDNT THINK I WOULD GOD WE K I S S E D
  • and you’re like ?????? yeah,,,,,w,,,we kissed?????
  • and amber is like,,,,,,,, still jittering and you’re like ?????? and she’s just like sORRY i just,,,,that was our first kiss it was corny right???? i shouldn’t do that right?????? should i do it again???? let’s do it again ok 3-2-1-
  • and once again there are lips on yours except this time it’s not as shocking, i mean it still is because THE AMBER LIU is kissing you,,,,,,but also like,,,,,
  • she is so cute and embarrassed and it’s obvious she’s still flustered because she isn’t doing anything but pressing her lips  to yours and you’re like,,,,,,,,,ok fine
  • and you tilt your head a bit and move closer
  • and now you’re ACTUALLY kissing
  • but when you pull back amber is red as a cherry,,,,,like more red than you’ve ever seen her and you’re like ??????? are you ok
  • and amber is like iM,,,,,,new,,,,,,to this
  • and you’re like what how you’re so popular haven’t you dated like a bunch of people and she’s like,,,,,,,no,,,,,im not even popular what im just me,,,,,,,,
  • and you’re like omg don’t be cute right now im dying but you’re also like “wait - do you like me too?”
  • and amber looks at you and then pushes your shoulder playfully like DONT MAKE ME SAY IT OUTLOUD,,,,,but yes
  • and you’re like wait hold up wait a minute since when
  • and amber’s like cringing, making noises and she’s like “can we not talk about it,,,,,,,,,it’s so corny,,,,,”
  • and you’re like “i want to know!!!!” and she’s like fiNE
  • so she explains that ever since you first helped her out at the gym,,,,actually ever since she saw you cleaning the bleachers after everyone left she’d always thought it was really cool how hardworking and loyal you were to such like a boring job
  • and she’s like “you’re really dense, i lost my keys like 10 times in two weeks like that’s humanly impossible i was just trying to find excuses to stay behind with you” and you’re like ihdfglff WHAT
  • and amber is like YEAH DUDE HOW COULD YOU NOT FIGURE THAT OUT
  • and you’re like i just thought you were that clumsy and amber’s like no one is that clumsy not even kids,,,,,and you’re like ok good point but go on
  • and she’s just shrugging like “you’re different from most people, you never make a big show out of like being forced to clean up other peoples messes and you always helped me even when you could say no and i don’t know your face it’s like attractive,,,,like i like it,,,,,,,,i bet my dog and cat would like it too so ,,,,,,,,you know,,,,,,whatever i like you there i said it”
  • and you can’t help but break out into a grin and amber is like
  • “also maybe i uh made up this film proposition just to get more time with you”
  • you’re like wait what there isn’t an actual film??? and amber’s like no there IS but,,,,,,it’s all about you im not filming anyone else and you’re like WHaT that’s going to be so boring-
  • and amber is like STOP SAYING YOU’RE BORING YOU’RE NOT
  • but you’re like seriously though,,,,i don’t think there’s enough about my job for a whole movie and amber’s like you’re right,,,,,,i guess the rest of the movie can be about,,,,,,,,,
  • and she steps closer again and you feel her hand on your neck pulling you in again and you’re like,,,,,,,you know what let me just kiss her for now and we’ll figure this out later
  • in the end,,,,,you and amber end up together in your bed,,,,
  • cuddling and watching netflix and amber shows you pics of her pets
  • and it’s an impromptu first date and amber gets calls from all the people back at the gym and she’s like no im not coming back, leave the footage at my place!!!
  • and then you and her kiss some more and then fall asleep binge watching some anime she couldn’t stop talking about
  • amber decides that she’ll make the movie after all, but instead of it being about you she also does film other on campus student workers
  • but she keeps grumbling about how she could have totally found some way for it to be just about you and you’re like no,,,,you can’t and she’s like trust in my skillz and you’re like why do i like you again and she’s like because i got skillz
  • you actually tell amber that you used to comment on her instagram posts and she’s like SERIOUSLY NO WAY and you’re like “amber, i was your number one fan” and she’s like SHUT UP NOOOOO and you’re like yeah i can show you
  • and she somehow gets so embarrassed by the fact that you like ??? di that and you’re like why and she’s like,,,,,,,,,it’s cheesy don’t and you’re like you know what’s cheesy you still getting up after we kiss and running around because you’re so embarrassed like we’re dating now amber-
  • and she’s like LALALAL I CAN’T HEAR YOU
  • sometimes it is so childish of her but you put up with it because she makes everything better, like your life is just ,,,,,so much more brighter because of her
  • and when she introduces you to everyone as her significant other everyone is in disbelief because they never thought amber would actually like date someone
  • she always seemed so uninterested in relationship like everyone just tells you she concentrated on her work and on hanging out with friends so it’s just ,,,,,,,wild
  • but everyone is nice to you (minus the fanclub who’s like no one is good enough for amber even though you agree with this tbh you’re in shock this is happening, you’ll never be out of shock)
  • but best of all amber is like “no i get to post some couple photos, come here let’s take a photo of us holding hands-”
  • and you’re like “for someone who gets worked up after just kissing, you sure are into romantic stuff aren’t you?” and amber is like STOP ITS FOR THE AESTHETIC
  • and you’re like UHUH
  • all you talk about with each other is memes. you send vines to each other. you also send photos of like you guys doing random crap like squatting in a starbucks or trying to pet a random dog while the owner isn’t looking
  • amber starts a vlog answering questions and there’s so many about you that she does a ‘ask my s/o questions’ tag video and you’re like,,,,,awkwardly there but then someone is like “what do you love most about amber?”
  • and you talk for like a good 30 min while amber flails her arms in the back and rolls around on the bed and runs in and out of the room in embarrassment
  • and pda for her is like a,,,,,,,it’s like she cannot do it
  • like you kissed her cheek while you were out w some of her film friends and she dropped the taco she was eating
  • and that’s like,,,,,,,crazy because amber lives for tacos,,,,,,yet she just dropped it right all over her lap and you were like ,,,,,,,oh no and the entire table broke out into laughter until amber came to her sense and threatened to delete editing softwares off their laptops if they didn’t stop
  • she skates everywhere and sometimes she’ll skate away and make you jog to keep up and you’re like i swear im just going to buy a scooter one day or something
  • (for your first anniversary she gets you a freakin scooter)
  • she has a horrible habit of taking photos of you sleeping and posting them like everywhere with captions about how you’re not getting any work done
  • you get revenge by taking photos of her drooling in her sleep
  • you go with her to get another tattoo and she’s like trying to get you to get one and you’re like iffy about it and then the artist is like “you should get ambers name in a heart” and both you and amber are like WAHGTGGF
  • you once were like getting really into it with her in the locker rooms when everyone was gone but then,,,,,her phone rang and it was,,,,,the goddamn trolololo song and you were like AMBER THIS ISNT 2006 and she was like GOOD MEMES NEVER DIE
  • after learning she teaches taekwondo to kids and meeting her little sister from the big brother/big sister program and just seeing how well she does with kids you were like
  • ‘mom amber is a cute concept’ and she was like ‘what’ and you were like (———: you heard me
  • tries to deny the fact that she’s great with kids but like,,,,,,,how can you deny it she’s literally an excitable five year old sometimes it’s not wonder she’s so good with them
  • finally finishes editing the film about you and the other uni student workers and you guys watch it on her laptop at like 3 am via skype because you’re the first person she wanted to show it to
  • and when she’s like “is it ok????”
  • you’re like, half asleep and like “why do i have pimple in the beginning of the movie” and she’s like “THAT DOESN’T HELP ME” and you’re like “i loved it, you’re amazing id kiss you to prove it if you were here” and she rolls her eyes like don’t
  • but she’s really really proud that you liked it
  • you befriend luna, krystal, and victoria really fast because you’re always worried about ambers health and you tell them about that time in the locker room when you though amber was going to pass out but she still agreed to help her friend
  • and you four are like “we need to protect her. she’s too nice for her own good”
  • krystal: more like she’s too airheaded for her own good
  • amber: i AM NOT AIR- OMG look a dog,,,,,im gonna go pet it
  • jokes but honestly she really does need you guys to keep her in check because she always has so much on her plate with all her friends and all her schoolwork
  • that sometimes you have to be like ‘amber, we’re going on a date’ and she’s like omg we are and you’re like yeah a nap date come over and get some SLEEP
Glasses (Ji Soo)

Type: Fluff

Request: Jisoo scenario where you take your son on set to see him.

~sidenote: I’m gonna use when he was on Scarlet Heart~

“You excited to show daddy your glasses?” you coo to your 17 month old. Yihan. Today had already been eventful for the little one, having to get his first pair of glasses before he was two. Walking on set you were worried your son would be very confused by the long hair and hanboks everyone would wear. “Daddy is working hard” you tell Yihan. You soon stopped when you saw a familiar face “look its uncle” you say as Yihan looks around. “Oh Yihan” Joohyuk says as he sees you two. “Look at him. Jisoo mentioned he needed glasses” he said as he glanced at you “can he see now?” he asks as you nod. He holds his hand in front of Yihan who flinches instantly “ah I guess you can see my hand buddy” he says as he rubs Yihan’s head.

“Jisoo should be done filming soon” he tells as Yihan makes a sound wanting down. “How about we go surprise daddy more yeah?” you ask as he nods. You take his hand as Joohyuk takes the other. “Daddy” Yihan calls as you walk passed many people.

“I’ll go get him” Joohyuk says as you nod. You sit down in a random spot as Yihan stood in front of you. “You like your glasses?” you asked him as he just looked at you. “must be nice seeing things” you coo.

You grab your bag pulling out a think of banana milk which instantly made Yihan smile. “Can you say please?” you ask “please” he says as you smile stabbing a straw through the top and handing it to him. He smiled as he drank from it “mama hooked you up?” you hear as you look up to see Jisoo there in his wardrobe still. Yihan turned hearing his father’s voice before he got confused by the look “its daddy Yihan” you say as he walks closer to you. “I like your glasses bud” he says as he bends down to his son’s level.

Yihan touches his glasses and brings his drink back to his mouth. “Seeing me like this must be confusing” he says as you nid. “I’m worry I will grow used to this look and your normal look wouldn’t be the same anymore” you tease as he smiles “I don’t look good with long hair?” he asks as you shrug. “I prefer your short hair” you say as he leans over and presses a kiss to your lips. “Long day?” you ask as he nods lightly “but I will get through it with you two here then we’ll go out to eat” he promises as you press another kiss to his lips.

“Yihan wanna go meet your uncles and aunts?” Jisoo asked as Yihan looked over at him and nodded. He stuck his arms up and his father picked him up. “I like it here” you say as he links your arm with his “it’s calm” you continue “Yihan might not like it. He likes his cartoons” Jisoo says “Yihan do you like it here?” he asks as Yihan shook his head no and passed him his empty container.

~

Yihan became the center of attention as the period dressed men followed him around wanting his input in things. “Daddy” Yihan mumbled as his father looked down at him. “What?“ Jisoo asked as Yihan smiled at his dad who smiled right back at him. “Ah mommy ditched us for Baekhyun” he said as he looked over at you in the middle of a chat with his elder. “I think we should have noodles for dinner” he said as Yihan nodded. He picked up his son and hugged “daddy missed you today” he cooed as he kisses his son who leaned against him in happiness.

anonymous asked:

I don't see why anyone likes you you're a piece of crap

I know right. Even I think that about myself :D matter of fact there are tons of reasons to Hate me which I’ve said several times before so lets count em down ^u^

Reasons to Dislike JaxBlade :)

I’m Overly Optimistic….like annoyingly so at times. I look at the glass Half Full and my lifes been crappy but I always see the good. A lot of pessimist people I met don’t like me cause they think I’m fake but hey Most of the time this is me appreciating the good times though to lead into my next one.

I can be a tad emo at times.…There are times where i feel like my friends dont like me at all, I’m burden to them and they are just being polite especially if we go long bouts without talking and i feel all alone and depressed and Kinda clingly. Luckily Im working on that day by day

I can be a Bit Cocky and Arrogant at times. I’m proud of my body and like to show it off cause I used to be fat and seeing myself improve eveyday gives me a slight ego boost and I like to show off.

I can be a such an Attention Whore: In so many areas xD especially If I’m at a place I like to be center of attention and take off my shirt to show off even though

I have mediocre results for a fitness person: I’ve working out since I was 16 and I’ve barely added that much mass to my frame. Speed and Strength have skyrocketed since back then but I’ve been working out Damn near 10 years and my physique honestly isnt that impressive even though I like to gloat

I’m kind of a Perv Not like peeking through windows and stealing womens under-roos but I love women, I love booty and I love breasts. I love the concept of an hour glass woman with curves in all the right places and thats the primary stuff of my Special blog

I can be the Biggest Dick if you’re an Asshole to my friends: when people insult me I gotta thank all those years of bully beatings for giving me tough skin cause i can get on but if someones fucking with a friend of mine or someone close I become like a fuckin supervillain and If they are out of shape and being an ass to my friends I let lose and break their self esteem. Luckily with all the meditation I do now I dont do that as much and focus on my day

I’m indifferent on a lot of things that people get upset over: Like a lot of people can be pissed off and ask me my opinion and Im usually like “yeah that sucks” and they get mad at me cause I’m like Meh. The last time i remember that was that Dear Fat people video that a lot of people bashed and while I personally didnt agree with how she was saying her message as a person who was beaten up and fat shamed and used that as motivation to get in shape. It honestly didnt bother me that much and I didnt think anything of it but a few people got mad at me cause they thought i was promoting fat shaming with my indifference

I’m all for Gay people and their rights: so Some people may call me a “Fag lover” or something cause Im supportive of the gay community BUT i do know something about me. I was at one of my Best friends’ , since we were 14, Wedding 2 years ago he’s gay and been that way since he said he was 12, and I met his husband there and his husband was cool and an awesome dude and I thought they were great. But when they said “Kiss the Bride” I looked away. and I notice I do that a lot when I hang out with my gay friends marcus and kevin and they kiss I just look away. I’m happy that they are happy and in love but seeing two men kiss makes me a lil uncomfortable SO I HAVE to work on myself to be a bit more liberal

I’m Black: so Racists hate me just cause of the melanin in my skin so theres that

The Brony thing: I used to be a Hardcore brony back in 2011-2012 till I dropped the term and now Im just a casual fan of the show. So Some people can dislike me because I watched it and others call me a poser and fake cause im in my Buddy Racebest’s Bronies React videos but i dont use the term brony for myself anymore since im just a casual fan of the show so theres that.

I Prefer Dubbed over Subbed anime

I’m kind of a Man whore

I’ve Lied to the ones I loved the most and the ones I was closest to because I was scared that they’d leave If somethings wrong with me I usually laugh it off and kind of do a Lie of omission if someone asks. So I need to work on being more open to people who care about me

I dont like the Pixar film Up xD and some people have legit told me they hate me for that and unfollowed me

I Quote my Bullying story a Sickening amount for Motivation and Inspiration for people.

I like seeing Criminals and bad people in general die in horrible ways and think they should be put down for the count instead of imprisoned.

If its not Fitness, Health, Exercise, Anime, Cartoon, Comic stuff I can be considered borderline retarded at points

I can be Overbearingly Overcaring for people I care about at points that I come off as Irritatingly clingy

———————————————————–

And theres a WHOOOOOOOLE Lot More that I openly admit and all I can do is acknowledge it and work on bettering myself like a Redemption Arc Yeah like Kenshin when he went from Battosai to Heroic Samurai or Vegeta mass murdering warrior to Lovable Family Guy. Its gonna take some time but I’m willing to work on it But I’ve already accepted all my faults so I can use them to better myself
