My take on some of the Last Unicorn characters. So far I’ve gotten the Unicorn, Shmendrick the Magician, Molly Grue and Mama Fortuna. I’ll do more characters because the story of this novel/movie is one of my top favorites. I sometimes wish I’m able to make my own animated adaptation of it.
The unicorn lived in a lilac wood and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.
Another piece for class. This time the unicorn from The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. I chose it for the movie, but tried going by the book. I also took huge inspiration from Mary Blair’s amazing concept art for disney. Maybe later I’ll complete the Harpy as a companion piece.
When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn
When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn In the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn
I’m alive, I’m alive
When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn Look and see her how she sparkles, it’s the last unicorn
This was one of the few hand-drawn animated films that Rankin & Bass ever produced and I wish they’d done more because this was gorgeous. It had a beautifully subtle style of 2D animation that was done by a company in Japan called “Topcraft” which eventually became the group we know now as “Studio Ghibli”.
