filipina and malaysian

18. Filipina (also have Chinese, Indonesia, Malaysian, and Spanish blood).

People have noticed that I don’t have a lot of Filipino friends, or know other Filipinos; sometimes I don’t feel “Filipino”. I think one reason is because I shouldn’t just be friends with someone just because they are the same race as me; as long as we get along with each other, I would be happy to call you my friend.

Another reason is because when I was younger, I was embarrassed being one of the few Asian girls in my school and wanted to somehow “fit in” with the others and I didn’t follow my culture. I was even ashamed of being overweight and having curly hair compared to other Filipinos that was skinny and had straight hair (I got my hair dyed yesterday and the hairdresser straightened it afterwards).

It wasn’t until I visited the Philippines when I was in 5th grade that I should learn to embrace my culture. I don’t exactly follow some customs, but I at least know where I come from. I’m proud of my curly hair and have a much better body image than I had as a kid.

I’m just proud of being who I am and where I come from.
