The Wicker Man, 1973. A British mystery horror film. Directed by Robin Hardy. Written by Anthony Shaffer. Starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland.

The film was inspired by David Pinner’s 1967 novel Ritual and centers on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practise a form of Celtic paganism.

The Wicker Man is generally well-regarded by critics and has achieved cult status among fans. Film magazine Cinefantastique described it as “The Citizen Kane of horror movies.”

(On a personal note - this film is the perfect mix of creepy strangeness set against a non-horrific landscape which adds to the low-boiling tension and subtle (sometimes not so subtle) slow building, impending doom.  Overall, much stronger than the lame ass Nick Cage remake.)

“Don’t you see that killing me is not going to bring back your apples?”

‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’ - Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaynge (1995)

Quite possibly the best loved Bollywood film ever made with two of the most iconic stars.

Reservoir Dog‘s bizarre title was inspired by the French Louis Malle film Au Revoir Les Enfants (“Goodbye Children”). A story that Tarantino has recounted on a number of occasions reveals that whilst working as a video store clerk in L.A., an interaction with a customer lead to a mispronunciation that stuck.

It’s no secret that Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing bears a huge resemblance to Reservoir Dogs and Tarantino isn’t ashamed to say so: “I didn’t go out of my way to rip-off The Killing, but I did think of it [Reservoir Dogs] as my take on that kind of heist movie.”

Like Kubrick’s film, Reservoir Dogs employs flashbacks to show how each criminal gets involved in the heist.

Steve Buscemi, who played the infamously unsympathetic to customer services Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, makes a brief ironic appearance in Jack Rabbit Slim’s as Vincent and Mia’s waiter. He’s dressed as Buddy Holly, and doesn’t seem to be enjoying his work very much. “I don’t think Buddy Holly’s much of a waiter,” Vincent deadpans.

WILD AT HEART

1990 / USA / 124 MIN

director DAVID LYNCH
protagonistas NICOLAS CAGE
                       LAURA DERN
                       DIANE LADD
