Negotiators for Unifor and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV reached a last-minute tentative agreement, averting a strike by about 10,000 auto workers that would have shut down the company’s two Canadian assembly plants and a factory that makes engine parts and other components.
After holding fast in negotiations for weeks against a so-called pattern agreement reached last month with General Motors Co., Fiat Chrysler agreed to a new contract that provides workers with $12,000 in bonuses spread over four years and wage increases of 2 per cent in each of the first and fourth years of a new contract.
The deal between the Canadian union and the auto maker also calls for investment of $325-million to build a new paint shop at its plant in Brampton, Ont., a move that should secure its future.
“This has been one very difficult set of negotiations,” Unifor president Jerry Dias told a news conference late Monday night in Toronto.
Auto workers at Fiat-Chrysler have ratified a new agreement with the automaker.
Unifor says workers voted 70.1 percent in favour of the deal, which was reached just minutes before a midnight strike deadline last week.
The deal was patterned after one struck with General Motors back in September. That deal was ratified by 64.7 percent of the union membership.
Under the new deal, Fiat-Chrysler will make a $325 million investment at its assembly plant in Brampton, has committed to make a plug-in hybrid vehicle in Windsor and a pledge to protect jobs at its casting plant in Etobicoke.
The new deal also includes a two per cent wage increase this year and another two per cent increase in September 2019. There is also a $6,000 signing bonus plus lump-sum bonuses of $2,000 in each of the next three years to most employees.
The union will now use agreements at GM and Fiat-Chrysler as a template for upcoming talks with Ford.
I think the worst part about Anton Yelchin’s death is that there’s a possibility that the Jeep he drove had a recall on the shifter for being too confusing and not relaying enough information to the driver if the car is truly in park or not. It’s still being looked at what year his Jeep was and if it did indeed have the shifter, but nonetheless… Keep an eye out.
In this world where it seems that companies cut so many corners to save money or design something so poorly, but it passes through to production anyway(Goodyear tires and Takata Airbags), it is really upsetting to think that it takes a loss of life or a horrible accident to bring attention to these issues because they shouldn’t even exist in the first place.
RIP Anton Yelchin regardless of the circumstances.
Fiat Chrysler automobiles have finally launched the iconic
Jeep brand in India. The big
muscle American car brand drove into the Indian market at the Auto Expo with
not one, not two but three powerful SUVs. A small yet significant market currently dominated by the
Europeans will finally some worthy challenge.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT & Grand Cherokee
The wait is now over for those looking for crushing set of
wheels that look macho and also provide a lot of comfort. The ‘beast’ is powered by a 3.0 litre Diesel engine that churns
out 240 PS of maximum power and paired to an 8-speed ZF gearbox.
One of the most noticeable qualities of the Grand Cherokee is
that it comes with a special air suspension system called Quadra-lift which lowers the car’s body to ensure a higher efficiency
and a more aerodynamic drive.
And in case the 3.0 litre engine is not good powerful enough for you, Jeep also
got the massive 6.4 litre 475
bhp engine. Despite the
big dimensions and the excess weight the SRT is able to a 0-100 kmph in around 5 seconds.
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
For those who want less of sophistication and more of muscle
Jeep also got the Wrangler at the Expo. The Wrangler, which has been a proven off-roader across the world will come
in both Petrol and Diesel engine options. A 3.6 litre V6
petrol engine which churns out 285 bhp and a torque of 352 Nm will do the
duties along with a 2.8 litre 197
bhp Diesel engine. The SUV
will be available in both manual and automatic transmissions. The
Wrangler will come with a lot of features that aid in off-roading. These include stability control and
a post collision safety system.
The SUVs will be launched towards the middle of this year in
