The Red Meadows (1945) dir. Bodil Ipsen & Lau Laurtizen Jr.
Jane Campion is often listed as the first (and as of 2017 only) woman to win the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival. But in 1945 Bodil Ipsen, along with co-director Lau Lauritzen Jr., won the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the top honour at the festival, for their film, The Red Meadows.
Ipsen remains the only woman to have ever been awarded the Grand Prix, which was retired in 1954. It was replaced by the Palme d’or in 1955. As of 2017 Ipsen and Campion are the only two women to have ever directed films given the highest honour at Cannes.
