Anita Sarkeesian vs Rise Kujikawa: or (Why Modern ‘Feminism’ Misses the Point)
I’ll start this off by saying that I am not against feminism in any way… or at least real feminism. I am however, against blatant agenda pushing and the misuse of a term that is meant to signify equality.
This is a really dumb tweet. Let’s dissect it.
A quick analysis tells me a few things:
Anita Sarkeesian has clearly never played Persona 4
Anita Sarkeesian is judging this character purely by her looks
Anita Sarkeesian has absolutely no clue what she is talking about
The character on the press badge is Rise Kujikawa, one of the main characters of the video game Persona 4. Rise, is a 15 year old former Japanese idol who has starred in films, television series, and commercials. Oh, and she’s also a pop star.
Now surely its not too hard to imagine that a pop star would be dressed that way, right? Especially when considering that this is all an advertisement for a DANCING game.
“We idols aren’t just dolls to be gawked at! – You just can’t connect with anyone unless you let them in to see the real you!” - Rise Kujikawa
Rise’s entire character arc throughout Persona 4 revolves around her realization that she is much more than Risette (her idol name). She gives up all fame and fortune because she is tired of being a sex object and wants to be respected. Near the end of her arc, Rise also realizes that there is a part of her that wants to be Risette, and that isperfectly okay.
Rise is perhaps one of the most well written female characters in video game history and to judge her at face value is to spit in the face of all that feminism stands for.
True feminism is about empowering woman, telling them that they can do anything they want regardless of what society says. Not slut-shaming a fictional character because she has a bit of her midriff showing.
Anita Sarkeesian, better known for her youtube channel “Feminist Frequency” and her “Tropes vs Women in Videogames” series has currently been FORCED to move out of her house as she feared for her safety.
She repeatly received several harassing messages threatening murder and other violent activities. As always, men oppressing a strong women with convections of changing the world for the better.
We hope Anita it’s now in safety and she continues her valuable work for feminism.
In the midtime, there’s a petition to shut down steam as protest for the constant harrasment women have to deal in the videogame industry. Need any more proof of men’s aggressive nature?
For many of us, it’s hard to fully grasp the reality of what happened during the U.S. presidential election last night.
The entire world was watching, because the political and cultural effects of this election – perhaps more than any other election in recent history - will send shockwaves across the globe.
And as the world was watching, we lost. The results of the election were a stark reminder that we still live in a white supremacist, patriarchal nation. Progressivism, economic equality, and human rights took a beating. Racism, misogyny, and Islamophobia won, as Americans affirmed white supremacy and patriarchy and hate. Hate for Muslims, refugees, people of colour, the poor, the queer community – sadly, the list seems endless. Now is not the time to mince words. The real-world impact of negative images and reactionary words has never been more clear.
Waking to a new day after a long and sleepless night, many of us are still in deep shock and in a state of mourning. And we must give ourselves permission to grieve. But once we grieve, then we must fight. We must be organized and strategic. We cannot let hate win because this isn’t just about us; this is about the world.
And to the world, we say: we refuse to surrender to the forces which seek to silence women. We will not stand idly by and allow the continued intimidation of people of colour, non-Christians, LGBTQ+ folks, and all those who exist at the intersection of multiple identities. We can and will participate in the mobilization of our communities. We will resist the hate. And in the end, we will win.
It’s only through collective action that social justice can prevail. Stand in solidarity. Get involved. Join us.
In grief and solidarity, Anita Sarkeesian and the entire Feminist Frequency team
I’ll get this out of the way real fast, first off, I don’t like her, I think she’s a con-artist, and a liar. Okay? Okay, not lets go into why. She says she likes video games, she said so in her kickstarter campaign,
she says so in interviews, basically she says it a lot. But what about before she was getting all this money for being a “woman in gaming?”
Oh…well that’s not nearly as nice. That won’t raise nearly the amount of money you need! Luckily she lied and raised well over her $6,000asking funds.
Yeah all that money originally just to make five videos (now expanded to twelve) which she has not completed. So what has she been up to instead of those videos she has over $150,000 for? Well she’s tweeting and going on tv of course!
Here’s a particularly vile tweet by her about how males in general are to blame for mass shootings. Then here’s her on the Colbert Report.
Oh and as far as what she’s saying her, well she better try and make sure her and Mcintosh are on the same page because here’s the writer of feminstfrequency saying that a certain factual feminist can’t be a feminist because…fuck I guess just because he says so.
Yeah, so much for giving feminist a voice, douchebag.
Also about her being on the Colbert Report, if you look on youtube there’s something interesting about that video.
Yeah, you can’t comment. Look familiar?
Now they say it’s because she’s a woman and people will harass her, but then why does Mcintosh’s video have the comments disabled as well?
Especially when that very video says that he’s more likely to be taken seriously because he’s male? Also why do none of the Colber Report’s other video have disabled comments?
Political figures and whatever else, psh say what ever you want, but put a feminist up there and no no don’t be mean to her!
Anita says that games don’t represent women well physically or mentally, but really she cherry picks quite a bit.
The weird thing is she seems to acknowledge that these games exist then when you think she might say something smart she just turns around and goes, “lol but those don’t matter!”
She attacks games like Bayonetta for having a sexualized character,
and I suppose she doesn’t really care that the creator of the character design was a woman named, Mari Shimazaki, who admitted to it being a kind of power fantasy.
A woman, I’m guessing, who also wouldn’t appreciate her character being referred to as a “fighting fuck toy.”
Now, that’s just rude.
Other than that when she does actually get around to making a video she steals art and let’s play footage and rarely bothers to actually play the games herself unless it’s to make a character do something intentionally misogynistic that no one else who plays the game is doing, otherwise she’d have probably just used their footage. She says that because certain games give players the ability to kill women, even if they get penalized for it, that it still reinforces the belief that violence towards women is okay. Which is sort of like saying that because Mirror’s Edge allows me to fall off a building it’s reinforcing the belief that I should jump from the empire state building. It’s just stupid. And that’s pretty much what I think about her in her entirety, she’s a liar, a con-artist, and pretty dumb to boot.
Can I rant about something here? I absolutely HATE radical feminists. Like, why in the hell are people upset when the media won’t portray being a 500 lbs. whale as a healthy choice in life? Seriously. The world doesn’t revolve around you and your special little snowflake reality. If you get triggered because some rational human being points out that being otherkin is total bullshit, perhaps you should get the fuck off the internet. And while I’m sitting here, can I just point out that the trans community is so fucked right now because of people who try and keep inventing genders? I get that gender isn’t just a binary thing, but there has to be a point where we say that enough is enough. And I’m seriously pissed at people like Anita Sarkeesian and Laci Green who believe that free speech has to take a backseat to PC culture, and that trivial shit like how a female character sits in a video game is more important than men who are abused and silenced because they aren’t believed. WTF guys.
