I’ve seen some of these going around, but most don’t really specify which ones are mostly centered around sexuality and/or which genre it is. Since most mention the character’s sexuality, I’ll be putting a scale of Low - Medium - High when it comes to how relevant the topic of sexuality/gender is to the book (not counting romance, but rather the ‘angst’ or something around it), plus the main genre.
I’m sure that most of you have watched the recent episode of The Originals and that you know about what has happened to our beloved brave bartender. I wanted to take a moment to write about my feelings regarding Cami’s death and what will happen to this blog as well my other blog @fuckyeahcamilleoconnell now that she is dead.
When I first heard about the spoilers and rumors that they would kill off not only one but two female main characters in just one episode, I shrugged these off, thought that all the messages I got because of these “spoilers” were nothing to be worried about because I couldn’t imagine that a show could be stupid enough to not only kill one, but two female main characters in only one episode and on top of that, one female they had already killed off only ten episodes earlier. I couldn’t believe that any show could be that stupid, most of all not The Originals. Not Michael Narducci, who didn’t strike me as one of those writers that only care about shock value.
Well, I was wrong. The writing did get this stupid.
kira’s story was in no way wrapped up, teen wolf is just another show that treats their poc characters and actors like garbage. like scira was a healthy, supportive, equal relationship between two poc and that meant a lot to a lot of people, as did kira as a character and now it’s gone. arden was your only fucking poc main female cast member teen wolf.
Okay, is it too soon to be, like, “Let me tell you about Edge of Normal” to the Creampuffs?
It’s not a vlog series (though there are additional in-character vlogs as extra material that I’m hoping is still online), but I have a feeling they’ll be into it anyway* and hey the main episodes of series 1 take, like, 40 minutes to watch and, since Wonderly just came back into doing stuff, it might boost our chances of getting a series 2 of that.
Plus you’ll need something to watch while you wait for Carmilla to return, because given how it’s exploded I’d be genuinely surprised if there wasn’t a series 2.
* It’s a superhero series with an all female main cast and a metric ton of ship-teasing, so, y'know. I’m underselling it here, but seriously go watch it.
Ok, I may just be a small women’s studies club president who is full of anger, but I ~have~ to say something.
You know what is trending? Jurassic Goddamn World. I don’t have the slightest clue why, but for some reason it’s making me mad enough to want to complain about it.
Jurassic World was the blandest, most soulless, most obvious cash -grab Hollywood reboot of a franchise I have EVER FUCKING SEEN. Boring characters with awkwardly showhorned in backstory? CHECK! Unnecessary romantic subplot with no chemistry? CHECK! Ridiculously impractical heels? CHECK!
Now the weird part here, is that, I didn’t actually hate this movie. We got to watch dinosaurs fight, and it was awesome. My point is that this movie was completely unnecessary and did literally nothing original in terms of plot or concept. But most people, like me, still enjoyed it. It was unoffensive, a modest critical success, a box office blockbuster, and apparently deserved a sequel.
The evidence is obvious. Moviegoers do not hate reboots, assuming they are well-done. This movie is obvious proof.
So why, on God’s green Earth, are people everywhere HATING the new ghostbusters movie just for being an unnecessary remake??
Ghostbusters was a perfectly acceptable movie, true enough to the original, though maybe not quite as good. It was funny, all of the remaining original cast was behind it. The effects and plot were all solid. So what’s with the extreme hatred?
The truth is that we live in a world where unsexualized women unassisted by men cannot be accepted as the heroes of action movies or comedies, and when they are, such films are branded as chick flicks.
So yeah, the fact that Ghostbusters is tanking doesn’t mean that Hollywood is going to stop making remakes. They’re still profitable as hell. It just means that Hollywood is going to cite this as an excuse not to include diversity in their films. Apparently, having a female main cast is still a thing that is controversial. Apparently, it is still the case that male driven films are for everyone; female driven films are just for girls.
So yeah, if you hate the new Ghostbusters for being a remake, but don’t hate Jurassic World for the same reason (which I imagine is the case, I DO NOT remember this kind of outrage or controversy directed at Jurassic World) congratulations, you’re a sexist.
Okay I’m sure people have already said this but idgaf ima say it till im dead The new Ghostbusters movie is SO IMPORTANT
They are WOMEN, they are of various body shapes, there is a WOC (super important for wee lil woc cause representation, my guys!) in the main cast, There is a gay woman in the main cast, the ladies were chosen not for their sexual appeal but for their stellar comedy abilities, and just overall impact of not needing a male to point them in the right direction of teach them (in a probably condescending manner) how to do things right. and oh get this
Not only is the main cast female, so is the crew!
There is so much incredible representation going on here!
Ghostbusters has always been a very important movie for me. As a kid I spent a lot of time in the hospital to be with my grandfather who was there the majority of the year over the course of well a lot of years. the one constant I had through those days of sitting in hospital chairs, surrounded by the beeping of machines and the smell of antiseptic, was my compact dvd player. Now as Im sure you’ve already guess the movie that was constantly being played through it was Ghostbusters. This was my main escape.
Now as much as a comfort and a constant that movie was in my life it never once crossed my mind I could be a ghostbuster. I sure as hell wanted to be one but it just seemed unattainable. I saw a woman being fought over like some object, some prize, after she called in to get help for something she couldn’t handle. I never saw a woman handling herself and using her abilities to battle the supernatural.
but now, now the heroes are women. women who aren’t constantly doing things for the male viewers gaze or for furthering the males plot, but because its their job and their life. The heroes are hilarious, complex, incredible, beautiful women. The heroes are unique and individual. The heroes are women i see myself in. the women thousands of people will be able to see themselves in and think “I can be this too”
anime with mostly female main casts that you may not have heard of
okay so i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. i always see people talking about how they want more anime with strong predominantly-female casts, but never hear people mention some of the shows that come to my mind when they mention that. so i guess here’s just a recommendation list? yea
kaleido star (sports/slice of life): this one is about a girl who travels to america to become an acrobat. has amazing character development, gorgeous animation, and also probably lesbians. directed by the same person who directed the sailor moon anime too so there’s that
aria: the animation (slice of life): in the distant future, a teenage girl travels to the planet aqua to become a gondolier. there, she makes new friends and learns more about what life is like on a new planet. bright and relaxing and makes you the happiest person on the planet while you watch it
magic knight rayearth (fantasy): one of clamp’s best works imo (what i believe to be clamp’s best is something i’m gonna write about in a sec here.) 3 girls are suddenly transported to a magical world called cephiro while on a field trip at tokyo tower, and are told that they’re the only ones who can save this other world from complete destruction. the animation looks pretty 90s, but if you can deal with that it’s one of the best straight-fantasy shows out there. and it also has giant robots
uchuu no stellvia (sci-fi/slice of life): in the year 2167, the earth was nearly destroyed by a star that went supernova several light-years away. however, humanity managed to rebuild, and now is more prosperous than ever. the protagonist decides to join the stellvia space program, which is essentially high school *IN SPACE.* however, despite how awesome that is, there’s a second shockwave approaching earth from the star that nearly wiped out all life on earth all those years ago, and she will be present to witness it as it strikes against the defenses that have been set up in preparation for this moment…surely nothing could go wrong, right?
angelic layer (tournament/slice of life): okay, this is what i consider to be my favorite of clamp’s works. danball senki was pretty much a spiritual successor to this show. in the not-too-distant future, pretty much everyone and their dog is into a game called angelic layer, where you make and customize little dolls that are controlled by your mind and then fight them against other players. the protagonist of the show gets talked into trying this by a strange scientist she meets when she arrives in tokyo. through angelic layer, she meets friends and learns valuable lessons about life in general
that’s pretty much everything i could think of, if you wanna add more you can.
the basic plot is really easy to follow; some douche (and the head of a cult) has all these “wives” to breed with, a super badass named Furiosa helps them escape in a tank truck, bad guy gets pissed and calls all his minions to follow him and get them back, Max gets entangled in all of this by chance and from then it’s all action action action as they all take part in a crazy pursuit on the desert
i’m pretty sure this movie stole all of the colours that were supposed to be in the Superman v Batman trailer
there are characters whose entire job is to provide a rock/metal soundtrack for the villains (bungee guitar man was in the trailer)
the main villain’s name is Joe
i’m not even a car person bUT HOLY SHIT I WANT ALL OF THOSE VEHICLES
seriously I have never seen so much creativity put into cars and motorcycles and trucks
you thought the desert was boring? guess again because oh my god the sandstorm scene
most of the female main cast are breeders/sex slaves and none of them is sexualised?? and they all have their moments to shine and distinguishable characters
the acting of the main cast was on point and I love all of them but especially Charlize Theron as Furiosa, she’s such a badass
you totally don’t have to have seen the previous Mad Max movies to enjoy it but you’ll get a few nods here and there if you have
tl:dr THE MOVIE HASN’T EARNED ITS BUDGET BACK YET
PLEASE GO SEE IT AND GIVE IT YOUR MONEY BECAUSE IT’S SO SO SO WORTH IT (preferably in 3D)
Teen Titans Go!:
*has a lead character that is POC, has two female characters that are not sidekicks but actual superheroes*
*has 75% of the main cast female, each one with their own powers and personality, supports biracial relationships, makes show appealing regardless of gender*
*has openly gay couple as a cameo and female character accepts it*
*has confirmed lesbians, many different princesses with their own kingdoms and personalities, sometimes has genderbent episodes, understands morality more than most adults, makes girls have different body types and colors, show led by a young 13-year-old and his dog, makes very heartfelt episodes*
*uses female characters as plot devices for a male arc giving them no personalities whatsoever, writes off main characters on purpose to give the show unnecessary drama, makes one character a sidekick instead of an actual character, makes sidekick's love life completely overshadowed by main character's, main character would rather ditch his best friend for a girl, writes off female characters if they don't date someone in the all male main cast*
