Like the PKK, the YPG is a guerrilla force of men and women fighting alongside one another and who are influenced by the teachings of Abdullah Öcalan. There is also a branch called the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), which is an all-female wing that focuses on women’s issues. With the Islamic State’s reputation for mass female enslavement and rape, both YPJ and YPG often collaborate in battles and prove to be formidable.
