feel free to use~~

I feel like I need to say something right now, if only because it’s more productive than lying in bed crying and feeling helpless.

Before I begin, I should mention in advance that, due in part to having ADHD, I have genuine difficulty putting my thoughts together in a concise manner, which can lead to very long posts.  I understand if that puts anyone off from reading further, as I’m not even sure I know how to express what I’m feeling right now.

As a person, I was raised to be open-minded.  I’ve never known any other way to be.  I come from a highly LGBT-positive (bisexuality runs on my mother’s side of the family, and my godfather is gay), Democratic family that allowed me to express myself however I wanted, and consume whatever media I wanted (I’ve been watching horror films since I was a toddler, and I’ve been allowed to have facial piercings since age 16, and wear whatever I chose).  My immediate family is comprised of people that have known abuse, and overcome it (rape, CSA, alcoholism).  We have also been familiar with poverty.  The state we live in–where I’ve spent my entire life–had never gone red until this past election.

Having been born in 1983, I was alive through most of the presidency of one of the absolute worst leaders to ever take office: Ronald Reagan.  I lived through both Bush administrations.  I remember the “Satanism Scare”, the original backlash against violent video games, and 90′s “political correctness”.  The AIDS epidemic had barely begun.  PSAs aimed at children did their damndest to try to reverse the fact that drug use had become “fashionable” in the 80′s, and they practically beat us over the head with them during every commercial break while watching our Saturday morning cartoons.  I have seen a lot of bullshit (meaning that I have a lot to compare our current situation to), and always–always–I thought it was from the “bad” guys.  The “other” people, with the “wrong” values.

In less than five years, I’ve come to see that bullshit doesn’t only come from one “side”.  I’ve become disenchanted with the groups I had placed my faith and trust in for most of my life.  I’ve found myself disappointed and irritated with many actions done in the name of the things I believe in.  I feel as though we’ve reached critical mass, and that the people I thought were on my side–the “good guys”–bear more responsibility for it than any of them will ever admit.

Can I just ask when the FUCK so many of us on the left turned into the equivalent of yesterday’s paranoid WASP soccer moms and religious zealots?  When did we become the racists, sexists, and bigots, pretending those labels don’t apply to us just because they’re aimed at “the other” demographics?  And when I say “us” on the left, I’m really not so sure I even want to be here anymore, because it’s become a shamefully toxic and manipulative environment where people actually try to justify threats of death and violence over inane, pointless things that mean fuck all to the world at large.  I sure as hell don’t want to be a “right-winger” (because, remember–I was taught those were the “bad guys”), so where does that leave people like me?  In the mindset of “You’re either with us, or against us”, being fair and objective isn’t allowed.

When Trump became president, our news media and college campuses became rife with cries of “fascism”.  Where?  An overcooked yam in a suit that’s (rightfully) been the center of derision and mockery since he became involved in the election?  THAT’S what’s threatening you??  I’m sorry, have you never read about the shit Reagan pulled?  If you want to know what legitimate fascism is, go talk to someone that lived through Ferdinand Marcos’ rule in the Philippines.

Let’s establish something here: Those neo-Nazis were always here, BUT they had been shamed into hiding.  Suddenly, people were throwing the terms “Nazi” and “fascism” around, and these people started feeling more comfortable.  Those on the left started advocating for violence to combat mere differences of opinion, and white supremacists felt even more comfortable, because they were being shown that their methods were now socially acceptable.

People on the LEFT created the ideal environment for these people to crawl out of the woodwork, and feel like their belief system is validated and justified.  People on the LEFT spouted needless hatred, and gave these political cretins something to point to and say, “See?  We were right all along!”.  People on the LEFT willingly handed them the kind of antisocial behavior they’ve been dreaming of.

We’re now all experiencing the consequences.  If the Democratic Party had given Bernie Sanders the nomination, he would have steamrolled the election, and you all know it.  Then where would the “fascism” be?  Still hiding.  Cowering.  Not a single soul would be throwing that word around right now.  And no one’s willing to admit that maybe–just maybe–the Democratic candidate we were given could have been the problem.  We’ve created an environment where criticism is not allowed against certain people, which makes it so much easier for our trust to be abused.

And it is being abused.  We are approaching legitimate fascism, and it’s coming from the complete opposite end of the political spectrum.  This is where the careless throwing around of serious terms comes into play, as even the slightest criticism is enough to have a person labeled “alt-right”, or even “a Nazi”.  All this does is make actual neo-Nazis and white supremacists believe they have more company and support than they actually do.  If you’re not ashamed and embarrassed as hell about all of this, then, well…you’re probably not the type that’s even read this far in the first place.

I don’t know what else I can say that I haven’t said in pieces before.  All I can say is that I’ve lost faith in a lot of people.  Nearly ALL people.  And for someone that used to be very cheerful and social, I feel as though a part of me has been taken away.  Many of us are forced to be distrustful, even when we’ve nothing to hide.  When the bar for what is deemed “socially unacceptable” keeps being lowered, how long before it reaches you?  And when will the limit end on what we consider “hate speech”?  When you turn valid criticism against needless violence into “hate speech”, how long before it reaches those “vent posts” and “critical” blogs?  Because I’ve legit seen someone use the term “hate crime” because someone else didn’t ship the same two fictional video game characters together, and if you think those things are comparable, you are completely proving my point.

Let me make this clear.

If you, by any means, support white supremacy hate speech, the alt+right, the KKK, Nazis, or their supporters, I ask that you unfollow me.

Anyone who supports these groups has the gall to value one human life over another on the shallow, infinitesimal basis of skin tone, sexual orientation, and religion. If you empathize with these individuals, you empathize with murder, terrorism, genocide, hatred, and bigotry.

This blog is for beauty, and there is nothing beautiful about hate. There is nothing for you here.

HELLO! First off, you are AWESOME, I LOVE ALL YOUR ART, and you inspire me as an artist to do art things! So thank you for being my inspiration! <3 So anywho I was looking through your blog and came across an old ask that said you sometimes used pencil and scanned it into the computer for shading before posting it, and all ur stuff looks super good when I looked at the pencil stuff, so I was wondering what you use to scan your work? And what methods you might use to clean the scans? (THANK U!!!)

Sure! I use the Epson V700 series of scanners! Specifically, the Epson V750. It’s a nice glass 8″x10″ flatbed scanner that has the added perk (for us, at least) of scanning film as well*! So it comes with the equipment  and software to safely scan in 35mm and 120mm film, as well as being a sharp, calibrated scanner for scanning in small pieces of art and sketches. I think they sell a larger size of the V750 (that might be 11″x14″?) but I havent seen it and its way out of my price range for the kind of work that both Mat and I use it for – him for film scanning, and me for art scanning.

*Note the v750 is a model specifically for FILM SCANNING as well as documents, so check the v600 model line for sketches and lineart scanning! It’s the same basic build and software but without the film scanning on the side (trust me the film stuff makes it a lot more expensive than it would be normally bc not a lot of scanners do that well or come with holders) so the price tends to be a LOT more affordable!

Once I scan in my lineart, I tend to throw it either into SAI or Photoshop depending on what I want to do with it, but in SAI, all I really need to do is set the lineart/sketch to Multiply” and work on top of and underneath it! Typically this preserves the lines I want while letting me clean the lines up and add shading/texture/lighting/color etc. Anything I want, really! Typically though, I just tend to shade my lineart instead of color it in (i don’t always like losing my lines)

So a sketch like this:

Will get cleaned up, isolated, and shaded and turned into this:

Pretty sweet stuff, amirite?

Either way, that’s what I have and thats what I use! I mostly scan black and white but the color is just as good and can be adjusted from the scanner software. I definitely recommend to check it out! I dont draw as much in straight pencil as I used to unless I plan on straight painting it, but that doesnt mean having a nice scanner isnt worth it and can cut down on workflow if you work faster in pencil lines than digital. Besides, pencils have this nice texture to them that isnt easily achieved with digital brushes so if thats a look your going for, all the better to get a good scanner that can capture it.

Cheers!

TO PEOPLE WRITING HISPANIC / LATINX CHARACTERS:

  • not everyone goes by latinx. there is a big movement now because spanish is a gendered language that many people identify as latinx, not all of us do. some of us are completely okay saying latina or latino. it doesn’t make anyone better or worse, it’s a preference.
  • know the difference between hispanic and latinx. they are not interchangeable and many people ( myself included and i’m puerto rican ) prefer to be called hispanic. if you don’t know the difference, google is your friend.
  • stop fetishing us. we are people. this isn’t like being into roleplay, we are a people. we have a culture an identity and turning characters / people into the lowest common denominator of a specified group contributes to a culture where la migra porn is a thing. it’s disgusting. STOP.
  • STOP SEXUALIZING US. this goes with the above but honestly, this is the worst thing i’ve seen. women come in all shapes and sizes. not all hispanic / latinx women are that hourglass shape.
    • not all of us have big boobs or a big ass. some of us are thick minus that shape and are called gorda / gordita. there’s a culture that makes women that are on the bigger side but don’t have this hourglass shape to exercise more or are told that they need to put down the fork. placed in a culture that wants their women thick but not like that
    • THE FLIP SIDE, some of us are very skinny. some of are called flaca. are constantly told that we don’t look like we’re hispanic / latinx because ‘ aren’t you supposed to have curves ? ‘ some of us are told to eat more because we’re ‘ letting our people down ‘ simply by walking around with no curves.
    • if your muse is skinny and hispanic / latinx: EMBRACE IT. if you muse is thick but not that curvy shape that’s stereotypical, EMBRACE IT. stop having body claims that are disproportionate / are completely different than your muse because they have to look like that because of x, y, z.
  • not everyone speaks spanish fluently. some people speak spanish as their second language. some as their first. some learned both at the same time. and some learned spanish in high school as a requirement and otherwise know little to nothing at all. all of these are okay. it’s not whitewashing to have a character disconnected from their culture because their parents / whoever raised them chose not to teach them this skill. it’s something that happens. it’s realistic.
  • spanglish is a thing but not the way you’re thinking. people that don’t speak spanish fluently / know enough but not all don’t just go: today i’m going to la tienda. that’s not how it works. sometimes we’re speaking spanish fluently and we have a brain fart and might go, ‘ uh… store ‘ momentarily forgetting that word in spanish. sometimes we’re speaking english and then we get pissed and that’s when we go from english to a whole lotta shit you might not understand but we do. spanglish is not half a sentence in spanish and half in english.
  • stop contributing to stereotypes. not everyone is named maria with a last name like lopez. there are plenty of people with white people names. just like maria is a hispanic / latinx name, so can nicole. if the person holding that name is of that ethnicity, it’s not a white person name anymore. you can have first generation people with parents that are capable of handling their everyday lives without their ‘ translator ‘. you can have families not super close-knit. they can have small families. they can have big. they could grow up poor. they could grow up well off. all of these things are not far-fetched or unrealistic. they are reality.
  • STOP WHITE WASHING. this can be a whole post of it’s own but just… stop. you like that faded aesthetic, cool. you can get that aesthetic without turning your muse white. just like that actor / model / etc. takes faded pics on their phone and it doesn’t stop them from having their skin color, you can work your ass in photoshop the same way.
  • NOT ALL OF US ARE BROWN. some of us are black. some of us are white and burn in the sun. some of us are brown. some of us have blonde hair and blue eyes. some have red hair and freckles. some of us have thick, coarse hair. some have fine, thin hair. some of us have short, tight curls. we don’t all look like george lopez or america ferrera.
honestly, i’m just tired of seeing these things in the rp world. people that want to rp someone else’s culture but take a look at a buzzfeed clip for two seconds and say nailed it ! and no, not everyone is like this. not everyone contributes to this culture of stereotypes / lack of research on a culture they’re writing      but enough do. so please, if you’re writing a character of hispanic / latinx decent, do some research. google. ask your friends ( real life, on here ) that are of that decent. you can learn some slang, some things that maybe aren’t on google. no one on this website really bites, especially if you’re trying to correctly portray their ethnicity. so just please make sure you’re not contributing to some of these things and write your lovely character !
