In 1979, Bayern was invited by Real Madrid to play the inaugural tournament in memory of the former Real player, coach and president Santiago Bernabéu. A Bayern team featuring stars Paul Breitner and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge beat Ajax Amsterdam in the final to win the competition at the first attempt. The prize was a giant cup that came with a model of the Bernabéu stadium from the 70s. The silver cup has a lid depicting the famous Real boss and is mounted on a heavy wooden plinth.

“The Bernabéu throphy had to be dismantled in Madrid so it would fit on the plane back to Munich”, recalls Willi O. Hoffmann, the president at the time. For many years, the 64 kg, 1.70m x 1.50m cup stood in the club’s office at Säbener Strasse, and was also displayed in the entrance to the former fan shop. The 100.000€ trophy was slightly damaged in that spot, and again when the club offices were renovated in 2008. The cup had to be repaired. Bayern supporter Uwe Richter from Lengefeld completed this task with aplmb, and the Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu has now been restored to its full glory in this treasure room.

The trophy awarded at this annual invitation tournament for European top clubs has become progressively smaller over the years. The Bernabéu trophy from Bayern’s 2-1 win against the hosts at Real Madrid’s centennial tournament in 2002 is also on display in the museum.

when our team loses, us football fans don’t say “my team lost today we’ll do better next time,” we say “i hate my joke of a team they can choke” and i think thats beautiful
