Awkward Anime Episode 6.2 : Wolf Children - The fading innocence of Ame

Mamoru Hosoda’s 2012 creation has perfected something many modern directors try and fail at: Character Development. Engaging an audience to the point where they feel like they are in the mind of a character; frustration is felt when a mistake is made, satisfaction once the desired direction is taken. In Wolf Children, two of the characters have defined traits, following the path that they paved for themselves as children, yet on the outside, a young child watches and doesn’t speak. The audience is silent when he is. What is he thinking? Why is he doing this? Who do you want to be? That character always stands out to my mind with intrigue, frustration and acceptance filling my head throughout the film. Ame, the child who took it upon himself to grow up without letting anyone know.

Ame the child is easy to define, just like the rest of us, a shy, curious boy afraid of what is out there. Hosoda throughout his major works enjoys producing characters with defined personalities, where the start point creates a straight line to the end point. Before 2012 though, he had never focused on siblings before. The animator turned director decided upon the start of production that a brother and sister would be used. Yuki, the scrappy child turned mature strong teenage girl… And Ame, the erm… Interesting one.

Frustration is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Ame, is that fair of me though? I think the reason so many of us feel frustrated when he creates worrisome times for his Mother is due to one simple fact: We grow with Hana as time passes.

The movie is featured on the strength and persistence of young Hana, setting an image for her kids where they can be wild and free but also at the same time live diligently as humans. Now this raises the question, was Hana right in doing this? Giving the children a small amount of freedom every now and again, where the first view that both Yuki and Ame’s eyes lay on as they walk out the house could plant that seed of freedom in their minds?

Hana from the first moment she gave birth to her children, wanted to give a life of freedom where they can let their wild sides out without judgment and as time passes she would understand whatever path they would take. But as we all know, motherly love is nothing short of unbelievably hard to let go and we see that bond between Ame and his parent become more and more difficult to keep glued together. “the strongest bond on earth is that between a mother and children”

Ame’s transformation from a shy, attentive young boy to a curious silent wolf happened rather quickly in my opinion, but as I rewatch the movie it’s clear to me that his maturity is justified. It all came down to that one scene. The 10-15 minutes where the whole family finally felt what true freedom feels like. “I wasn’t scared. I felt like I could do anything”

“After that moment, Ame seemed like a totally different person”

Snow covers the vast fields and mountains surrounding their home. The door slides open to the family of three gawking in amazement. Here is the first time I see Ame, the Ame that he never showed us. Hosoda wanted to create a character who isn’t defined which is something that is difficult to perfect. Yuki, as she sees the white canvas, her character shines. She jumps out and just frolics in the snow to her delight.

Ame on the other hand… We see a young boy trudging along trying his utmost best to not trip and fall. The young boy is still yet to show his wild side, the freedom that we all as viewers know he craves, shown from the curiosity he has with the prejudice against wolves. He falls. Then something truly remarkable happened. His mother jumped in and hugged both of her children, and then we hear laughter. Ame, the shy little boy is laughing his heart out. What changed in those few seconds from trudging to laughing uncontrollably? I cannot look past Hana. It’s almost as if the mother gave him her approval, as if to say “It’s okay, it’ll be okay” the same words that we hear countless times up to this point. He needed his mum’s guarantee that it is safe to come out and play.

1. The wolves come out to play. Ame and Yuki are let loose, and for the first time in this movie, we see the timid Ame wild and free.

2. Ame and Yuki run down the snow covered fields in parallel fashion, as Hana tumbles down with a smile in her face. This right here, is my favourite scene in the entire film. Ame and Yuki, taking different paths but ultimately ending up in the same place, crossing each other, meeting in the middle. Hana chasing after Ame and Yuki, tumbles, rolls down…but with smiles and laughter. The biggest grins I have seen on her face. Ame is free. Yuki is free. She is grateful and proud that her children are able to let go of the world and be themselves.

3. Ame’s eyes cross a kingfisher bird, and then and there we see a quick movement. Leaping and catching the prey in his mouth, witnessing this weak timid toddler be so vicious in movement, biting down looking for the kill. Though, just as in the snow, he trips and falls. He calls for his mother as he is taken down the stream by the water in what seems like his final moments.

Ame: “Rain” born on a rainy day, and leaves his mother on a rainy day at the conclusion of the animated feature. Crying constantly as child who would always be cradling his mum asking for care. Silent, viewing life from a distance as a young teen where he stands and listens. The sounds of the forest. The wild life. No smile. Just a touch of acceptance is felt by Ame, the Wolf. Hana, is proud and realises his Son’s place in the world is where he wants it to be, not hers. She gave them the taste of freedom while trying her best to direct her children to a peaceful, human life. There is no right and wrong here. There is only life. Complications arise, and when they cannot be repaired, he has to leave. The howl at the end, we all know what he meant by that. Howling for his mother. The howl that reiterated the same words he heard his entire childhood:“It’ll be okay. It’ll be okay”

Ricky Whittle Supanova Panel

Holy fuck, you guys! I’ve been to a few conventions in my time and met my share of celebrity guests, but I can honestly say that I’ve never met anyone quite like Ricky Whittle. He is one of the sweetest, funniest, most positive human beings I have ever encountered and I feel beyond lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and speak to him. His panel this afternoon was one of the best and most entertaining I’ve ever attended and as poor a substitute as this post will be for actually experiencing it for yourself, I wanted to share some of the highlights:

• He is so incredibly passionate about what he does, like honestly, words are not enough to convey just how much he loves acting and how much appreciation he has for his fans ❤

• Boy knows how to make an entrance! He came out to music and got us all up on our feet dancing with him

• He literally did not stand still, let alone sit down, for the entire fifty minutes of the panel

• The MC had a slip of the tongue that resulted in him telling us to “hug [Ricky] with your mouths” and the innuendos flew thick and fast after that 😂

• He threw a ton of shade at Jason (without ever referring to him by name)

• HIS ACCENT OMFG! 😍 (for anyone who doesn’t know, Ricky is from Manchester, UK)

• He loves Aussie slang (especially the rude stuff 😉), which his fans have apparently been teaching him while he’s been over here

• His favourite scene to film on The 100 was in 1X07 where Lincoln is tied up and being tortured because that was when he first felt a real connection with Marie

• Speaking of Marie, he loved working with her and hated having to say goodbye

• Despite his ridiculously buff appearance, he apparently lives off candy and sugar (could’ve fooled me)

• Lincoln was originally supposed to die at the end of season three, but after Ricky booked American Gods, the script for 3X09 was rewritten to include his death

• He misses his cast mates on The 100 A LOT :(

• Bob was his best friend on set and they used to work out and go rock climbing together

• They also used to enjoy going to the casino together, which resulted in them both losing a lot of money

• He absolutely loves working with Ian McShane on American Gods because he’s incredibly talented and really funny so they have a lot of fun together

• He has apparently injured himself many times on set over the years because he does all his own stunts

• Poor boy ripped his wrist open on sugar glass while filming the Crocodile Bar fight scene in American Gods

• Apparently a lot of the scenes he filmed for The 100 were cut 😭

• The reason Lincoln’s voice was so gruff is that Ricky would spend his entire forty minute drive to set singing along to Bon Jovi at the top of his lungs

• He had to gain fifteen pounds to play Shadow, which, in his own words, sucked

• He thinks that Lincoln would win in a fight with Shadow since he’s a trained warrior

I’m so glad Matthew Lillard is in the new Twin Peaks. I’m not somebody who even has favourite actors, but like. Ugh. Matthew Lillard, man. He’s great.

He has one of those rubber faces that’s practically genetically engineered for comedy acting, and so I absolutely adore seeing him in horror films. There’s just something so incredibly sincere and captivating about his inability to pull off a subtle facial expression in those scenarios.

I sincerely and wholeheartedly think that my entire sense of humor was based off of that scene in Scream where he’s bleeding out on the phone and he’s like, “Did you really call the police? My mom and dad are gonna’ be so mad at me.”

Like, all I did as a kid was watch Thirteen Ghosts over and over again because I simply could not get over watching him try and convince Adrian Monk and Rah Digga not to fuck with a giant glass house full of ghost portal devil magic.

So now that i’m home...

Let me just start by saing what a fucking spectacular time I had in London and how kind it was of @agent-eggy, @lady-mephistopheles and @kingscunt to allow me and my husband to stay with them from Saturday to Wednesday. Seriously. The kindest.

I also got to meet and hang out with the amazing @breathtakinglybrutal and meet @elletromil, @krissielee.

@agent-eggy is just the most sweetest person. She’s funny, has a really dry sense of humour, and is so chill. Like even when I was panicking at 10 to midnight before the midnight screening, they were chill as fuck, and I love that. You are awesome!!

@lady-mephistopheles is so huggable and as the sweetest voice ever. She clamped to my arm like a limpet in the premiere, but it was brilliant because she is so enthusiastic about so much, and helped me get drunk when we did our toasts at half past twelve this afternoon

@kingscunt has the most adorable cheeks, the funniest sense of humour, and allowed me to verbally shitpost with them and hug them at random.

@breathtakinglybrutal is just amazing. You are so cute and It was my honour to chill with you. Thank you for being Harry’s chaperone around London and I hope to see you soon!!

Lady- M and Kingscunt were extremely kind to us and not only allowed us to stay with them, but also had us as their plus ones to the KINGSMAN PREMIERE in Leicester Square, London meaning we got to see the film on Monday.

I had the best time ever. The film was awe inspiring, and nothing I say could do it justice. Elton John was amazeballs, one of his scenes was my joint favourite in the entire movie.

Julianne Moore was perfect as Poppy, and Colin Firth’s performance once again confirmed the man can do ANYTHING. Mark Strong’s role as Merlin was further etched out and became a real standout performance. It was fantastic to see Edward Holdcroft and Sophie Cookson return to the screen. And Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, and Channing Tatum provided a whole new side to the Kingsman universe that I hope will be further explored because damn it, I need it.

I don’t wanna go further, but if you have questions, and want answers, hit me up okay? I’ve seen it twice now (soon to be three times), and I am eager to calm nerves, confirm theories, and discuss shiznit. If you want a private response, I can do that too. Just come off anon. :)

HEY I'm jumping on the Dunkirk bandwagon, I absolutely love how you draw Collins. He's my favourite pilot and tbh favourite character in the entire film because of his bravery and strength so THANK YOU FOR MAKING HIM LOOK SO GOOD! It's really amazing to see such a fantastic artist draw fanart from a film from a genre that isn't typically fanart-ed. Thanks a lot!

PLEASE DO AND ENABLE ME HAHA but thank you so much!!! i like collins too, he’s got great scenes and he’s quite interesting in how he’s pretty much what unifies the film’s three timelines… looks good enough on his own too pfft

my favourite thing about cars as a franchise is that if you try to think about the logistics of the cars universe as it is presented in the films, logically, for about…i don’t know, a second? the entire concept collapses

like, for example, there’s a sequence in the first cars film, in which lightning mcqueen shortly after arriving in radiator springs and causing all the damage, is effectively put on trial, and they do this in a courtroom

i want you to look at this image and try and think about how anything in this scene should conceivably exist in this universe. how did cars make the hardwood floor? why are they on a hardwood floor in the first place, wouldn’t their tires be making a complete mess on the floor? how did they carve those ornate pillars and door designs? how did they make the ceiling fans? why would cars need ceiling fans? how the fuck did they paint those pictures in the background? and design the detailed frames for the pictures? or even make the canvas on which the pictures were to be painted in the first place? how did cars make that sculpture and lettering above the door? how the fuck? the absolute limit of the cars fine motor skills control is their wheels which are woefully inadequate for doing anything, and even the little forklifts abilities are limited, with nowhere near the precise amount of control required for any of this shit to occur. how did any of this happen? the entire reality of the film falls apart with the slightest poking and it’s incredible

What's your favorite garnet moment?

in general, my favourite moments are when she smiles or laughs, her interactions with steven and amethyst, most of the monotonous one word lines, any time when we see how much faith she has in steven and how much she loves and trusts him, any sort of hand action (one of the first things i notice when garnet is on the screen is what her hands are doing) and because i love angst, when she’s affected by something but won’t show it, but i do want the show to bring attention to garnet’s struggles soon. i love it whenever she’s there for the people she cares about and her encouraging speeches really help me, but again i want (need) someone to help her… let garnet rest for a bit (also the fact that garnet’s there for everyone but she apparently doesn’t need help with anything herself plays into some nasty racist tropes)

actual moment wise? i would just say all of them but that’s not a proper answer so im just gonna list a bunch and bold my favs (this is gonna end up being something from nearly every ep lmao)

I'm sorry but I'm one of those people who don't seem to enjoy the movie Tarzan as much :/ Can you please explain why you think it's a masterpiece? I'm interested in knowing why you believe that, because I always agree with your insight on everything☺️

hey no need to apologise, everyone’s entitled to their opinions and sometimes we just don’t gel with movies or books, it’s no big deal!! thank you for being so polite and for asking this, though, i really appreciate your kind words!!!

reasons why i am trash for disney’s tarzan:

  • the SOUNDTRACK. phil collins, certified pop legend, just bringing the perfect mix of rhythmic little tunes and emotional ballads and uplifting lyrics that simultaneously move the story along and get stuck in your head
  • also mark mancina is a genius honestly the score for tarzan is so beautiful, the motif for jane is one of my favourite things in the world. the score has such a unique sound and it sets the scene so perfectly and hits every emotional beat!!
  • the animation!!!! did you know that they created a brand new animation system called deep canvas for this movie?? a whole brand new system!! from scratch!!! it allows 2d characters to move through a 3d world, which is how they got the awesome effects of tarzan sliding along tree branches and swinging on vines to work so well. pay special attention to the backgrounds and you can see how many layers there are in every scene, it really does look like a proper jungle with different levels of foliage and shadow and god it’s a work of art

  • the character of tarzan was animated by the legendary, mind blowingly talented glen keane (also responsible for ariel, the beast, aladdin, pocahontas, rapunzel and many more). BUT here’s the best part - he oversaw his animation from france, where he was meant to be on a sort of year long sabbatical from the disney company but loved the story and character so much he decided to do it anyway
  • MEANWHILE all the other supervising animators (including the incredible ken duncan, animator for jane porter [also meg from hercules]) were back in california. they had to collaborate across timezones and continents to create scenes where their characters interacted, and look at what an amazing job they did!!!

  • tarzan’s parents are two of the best looking characters ever animated by disney and they’re only in the movie for like five minutes what a waste

  • tarzan is a character that works best in animation. he does stuff no actual man could ever do and what would look ridiculous if a real human did it, no matter how good the cgi is (legend of tarzan 2016 i am looking at you) works within the animated world. he moves along the tree branches like someone on a skateboard or rollerblades, he swings from vines like a gymnast, wrestles wild animals like a… wrestler? and it all works because of the medium
  • also he’s pretty hot ngl

Quite-possibly-maybe my favourite track in the entire film, and my favourite scene. It sounds like Supermarine (the alarm!), but underwater, thereby linking up the three storylines with noise and at the exact moment the three storylines collide. Amaze. Come on, Farrier!

Philinda (May/Coulson) Rec List

I’m new to the fandom (hey guys!) and I don’t remember a time when I got into a fandom and didn’t make a rec list for my favorite pairing, so here it be.

Also, to be fair, soulmate AUs are my absolute favorite and I’m pretty sure I have all of the Philinda soulmate AUs on this list….no regrets.

if you read something and love it, make sure you leave behind some kudos or a good comment!

There are 38 fics in this list

Partners: Academy cadet Melinda May expects to be assigned with a fellow specialist after Graduation. When a provisional list says otherwise, Melinda decides to prove that she and her future partner are not a good match. But as she gets to know field agent Phil Coulson, Melinda realises they are perfect together in more ways than one.

shadows fade into the light: “Soulmates weren’t necessarily connected by romance. One could have a soulmate solely based on platonic connection. It was the bond that was important, and whilst the majority were indeed vested in intimate relationships, there were also many pairs who lived simply as lifelong friends.”

In a Dream: Melinda and Phil discuss dreams during a phone call late at night. - Or the one in which she calls him back once and hangs up on him twice.

I thought that you might take me home: It’s not unusual for Melinda to have trouble sleeping. She hasn’t slept for extended periods of time since before Bahrain, so when two am rolls around and she’s merely twisting and turning in the sheets, she gets out of bed and heads for the gym.

The Farfetch.com Photo Shoot: The One with the Easter Eggs...

Of course, when these photos first dropped, my brain flat-lined and my ovaries exploded.

But once I picked my jaw up off the floor and put my flame-retardant panties on, I noticed these Easter Eggs in the photos that I thought I’d share with you all (in case you didn’t notice already…)

1. They’re Magically Delicious!

After I had a meltdown about the little tuft of chest hair peeking out from that thousand dollar Dolce & Gabbana pyjama top, I was mesmerised by Colin’s cheeky little grin.

It’s no wonder he’s grinning, because sitting in front of him is a bowl of Lucky Charms; an irreverent nod to his Irish heritage!

2. Actual Disney Prince(ss)

Someone at Farfetch has obviously been paying attention to Colin’s tag on Twitter since the promo picture of him as the Duke of Blackwood was released! Their recreation of this iconic scene from Snow White (especially with him starring in a Snow White-related film) cannot possibly be coincidence.

3. His Entire Music Collection Starts With…

When Colin was asked what luxury he’d want with him on a desert island, he answered his “entire music collection”.

In light of that, I found it quite interesting that the raven mural on the wall behind Colin looks very much like the raven on the Death Cab for Cutie album Transatlanticism, which he has said is his favourite all-time DCfC album.

4. The Heroic Anti-Hero?

When asked about his character Nathan Appleby from The Living and the Dead and whether he would be considered a traditional hero or an anti-hero, Colin was typically cryptic.

“I wouldn’t like to spoil anything regarding Nathan and what type of man he is. I will say however, that he goes on a journey the likes of which I don’t think we’ve seen before, with regards to what you mention about heroes and anti-heroes being separate types of character.”

We know that Nathan is a loving husband, a family man, and a member of the landed gentry. We also know that he is obsessed with proving the existence of the supernatural and that the former is threatened by the latter. So what does that make him? A heroic anti-hero?

Sounds a bit like the Caped Crusader.

I'm gonna praise Seb's acting here for a sec because during the midcredit scene how the fuck can someone look so sad yet so happy at the same time? I want to cry just thinking about him smiling at Steve with his sad eyes because he's afraid.

“I’m going to praise Seb’s acting here for a sec” YES MY NUMBER ONE KINK, LETS GO. I made an entire post about his performance in this film already bc I was just so blown away by it? And like I know he’s brilliant at what he does, I talk about it all the time, but he stepped it up again in this film. The very opening scene of the whole film, where they take him out of cryo and he’s in the chair, you can literally see the traces of Bucky Barnes slipping from him as the Hydra guy reads the list of words to him. Like you can see the fear at first but as he gets further down the list, his eyes sorta glaze over but also get more focused? Like he’s not present anymore, but he’s also ready to do what they tell him to do. And like, if it’s like in TWS, they didn’t actually have all the head gear stuff attached to the chair, like that was CGI’d in after, so that entire scene was done without him having anything to really work with to elicit those reactions??? And then the end credit scene. He somehow managed to look simultaneously defeated, relieved, upset and a little bit hopeful all at the same time?? Sebastian literally plays about 3 different characters in this one film and he does it all so well. He amazes me every time he does something new, he really does.

What are your top ten Edmund moments/quotes? From the movies or books.

Oooh, great question! To be honest, I can’t remember the books very well, I’m overdue for a reread, so I’ll do my best to keep a balance between book and movie moments. =) In no particular order:

1) When Edmund breaks Jadis’ wand to change the momentum at the Battle of Beruna. My boy is so clever, like, seriously, I could imagine him being an amazing strategist during the Golden Age and destroying Narnia’s enemies in battle by thinking ahead.

2) “But even a traitor may mend. I have known one that did.” Ugh, my feels for this quote. Even though everyone else forgives Edmund for what he did in LWW, he never forgets it (I sincerely hope that he forgives himself for it) and he grows so much from that experience. He earned that title of King Edmund the Just, don’t you forget it.

3) Edmund’s fight with Trumpkin. It starts off fairly lighthearted, then Edmund gets into his rhythm and then just whips him. And then Skandar pushes out his hip and looks so cool doing it.

4) “Between ourselves, you haven’t been as bad as I was on my first trip to Narnia. You were only an ass, but I was a traitor.” I’m so so sad that this didn’t make the film and that Edmund and Eustace never had that moment together (honestly, Edmund’s character was butchered in that film, but don’t get me started). Another reminder that Edmund hasn’t forgotten what happened during his first trip to Narnia, and this time he’s using it try to console somebody else.

5) “I know, you had it sorted.” MY FAVOURITE LINE. I love the way Skandar delivers it and I love the importance of that scene in terms of Edmund’s growth. It really was like closing an arc for him (until it reappears in VoDT… /grumble). EDMUND SAVES THE DAAAY!

6) Edmund’s meeting with Miraz. This entire scene is freaking amazing, I love how he dances with words in this conversation. They were clever to send Edmund (diplomat and spymaster), if they had sent someone else, I wonder whether it would’ve worked out the same way.

7) “It’s not like there isn’t air inside.” Oh, my sassy boy. And then proceeds to hit a six through a window. That boy has cricket skills.

8) “Is it Latin for ‘worst game ever invented’?” I’m so glad they kept Edmund as the snarky character, it’s honestly so hard to choose between all his brilliant comebacks, I could seriously make a second gifset of them.

9) The scene where Lucy sees Aslan and no one else believes her. I love his line, “The last time I didn’t believe Lucy, I ended up looking pretty stupid,” but more than that, I love that he waits for Lucy to leave and he walks behind her. He literally has her back. Like, all my sibling feels.

10) Pevensie hugs! I’m thinking of the one he shares with Lucy after he is rescued from Jadis where he literally rests his head on Lucy’s (like, HE NUZZLES HER HEAD. OMG, IT’S ADORABLE) and the one hug he gives Lucy after Jadis relinquishes her claim on his life and HE PICKS HER UP. Like seriously, it’s the cutest thing ever.

I know, I cheated on the last one because it’s two moments, but I CAN’T CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM. Edmund is my favourite forever and always. Thanks for the great question! xx
