Where do I begin with this saint of a character? I feel like she’s often overlooked on Bones because, let’s be real, that show is packed with amazing people, but Angela has always been my favourite.
Angela is so so patient, perhaps more so than any one character I can think of. Between Brennan’s difficulties reading people in the early seasons, the rambunctious squints and her on-again, off-again relationship with Hodgins, Angela spends a lot of her time nodding sympathetically and sighing. But never once does she seem to be annoyed, and never does she make other people feel like they’re a burden to her.
She’s not your typical genius, but she’s incredibly gifted with computers and uses her artistic talents for a very noble cause. Her deeply empathetic tendencies made her so relatable because of how the cases used to get to her sometimes, but that has become a determination to find the answers and get justice for murder victims.
She’s also an incredibly fun, quirky and energetic person to have around, always seems like she’s down for a girl’s night out or some new adventure. She never lets anyone make decisions for her (be it her dad or Hodgins) and even though she’s had a lot of ‘finding herself’-type storylines over the years, she’s never failed to be there for her friends.
If I’m being perfectly honest, I think I picked up my habit of calling everyone ‘sweetie’ from her. She’s a very comforting presence, always has a listening ear and some advice ready, and looks like she gives the best hugs.
“You’re going to think that the pain will never end, but it will. But first you have to let it all in. You can’t fight it. It’s bigger than you. You have to let yourself drown in it. But then eventually you’ll start to swim. And then every single breath that you fight for will make you stronger. And I promise you, you will beat it.”
Aside from being quirky, colourful and generally adorable, Penelope is one of the warmest, most welcoming presences in a show that gets pretty dark at times. She is incredibly smart and resourceful, always ready with a witty comeback, and often delivers a key piece of the puzzle - without her, the case doesn’t get solved.
In addition, she is a bit of a mother hen - always anxiously waiting for her family to come back to her, and so kind and loving to anyone who needs her. She’s never been afraid to hide her emotions, or to tell someone off when necessary.
She might seem soft and sweet on the outside, but she’s stronger than most, and definitely not one to mess with. (Unless you’re Derek Morgan, in which case… mess away)
In a show that’s pretty well-known for Barney treating women like garbage, the female leads are still very well-rounded. Lily is my favourite because she’s a perfect example of someone who’s in a loving and committed relationship, but doesn’t lose her own identity.
She supports Marshall in his dream of becoming a lawyer, puts up with his childish hijinks (even joining in on them, occasionally) and sort of mothers Ted, Robin and the rest of their group. She’s a nurturer, illustrated by her job as a kindergarten teacher, but is still a disciplinarian with her own sense of ‘Aldrin Justice’. As a part of that, she’s fiercely protective of her friends, but it goes both ways - if one of them slips up, she’s not afraid to give them a sharp talking-to.
Lily is a clear badass of the strong-and-smart variety, but she’s not afraid to be silly. She gives the most sage advice, and always knows what’s best for her friends, but is willing to be there with a hug when people don’t realize she’s right until too late. She’s half of one of the best couples on TV. Also she’s Slap Bet Commissioner, and that’s a pretty big responsibility.
◾ Hayley Marshall // “I’m a hybrid, but I’m also a mom. And a widow. And an Alpha. You are a psychologist. And a bartender. […] But if you don’t embrace the fact that you’re also a vampire now, you’re gonna end up dead. For real, this time.”
