anonymous asked:

For the character meme/ask thing: how about the head of the murder nerds - Kaz Brekker?

Listen dude, ‘head of the murder nerds’ is literally my favourite way of referring to Kaz in the history of ever god bless you for bringing this to me. Also yes, yes let’s talk Kaz…

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life (i tried not to let this happen but it did anyway and now I have just accepted my fate)

hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

best quality: he’s a crafty bastard and this comes in handy at times, you know…

worst quality: *represses feelings to the point that they all basically vanish and he forgets that other people have them too and that they can be hurt* (okay, like, I know I listed this as ‘worst quality’ and theoretically it is if you’re talking about like…from a person POV from a character POV though…I kinda love it? And I love it so much I’m going to bore you with a long waffle about the head murder nerd you never asked for but are getting anyway:

I enjoy the commitment to Kaz’s character/personality, frankly. I think it’s easy for characters (especially male characters) to be written in this sort of style, to the point that it’s probably a trope, bad boy on the outside with a heart of gold. Kaz doesn’t have a heart of gold, I might give him one of like…super rusty iron…with holes in it…but it’s definitely not made of gold.

Kaz is a ruthless prick at the start and he’s a ruthless prick at the end and I for one appreciate that. I think….For the most part…what you see with Kaz, is what you get. (Obviously not on the Plots and Schemes part because there needs to be some air of mystery about him. He’s dramatic that way. It’s required for his aesthetic) But in the sense of ‘this is who and what I am; you don’t like it? I don’t care. Deal with it.’ Which is…Refreshing. There’s no hidden reason behind the ruthlessness, he’s not trying to cover anything up (not in the typical sense of ‘my cold, sarcastic exterior masks a tender bleeding heart I’m too afraid to admit to sense anyway) He just is

Which isn’t to say that he’s shallow or simple or boringly written in fact it’s the opposite. There’s an interesting relation between how starkly and simply Kaz is presented. In a lot of ways he’s one of the most simply black and white characters around. He’s deepened, he’s explained, he’s explored, he matures, he grows, he learns, he suffers, he triumphs, he experiences, but the core of who and what he is never really changes. Kaz Brekker is introduced to us as Dirtyhands, the Bastard of the Barrel, the monster wearing a boy’s skin and Kaz Brekker leaves us as Dirtyhands, the Bastard of the Barrel, the monster wearing a man’s skin. He’s never undermined, he’s never softened, his edges are never dulled for the sake of watering him down to make him more palatable. Kaz isn’t palatable, Kaz isn’t, arguably, all that likeable either and yet, and yet…

I think it’s fascinating because, idk about anyone else I can only speak for me and the way I read these books, but I kept waiting for the transformation. I kept waiting for the moment of realisation. I kept waiting for him to shed his armour and prove to us all that he was really just a squishy, sappy sod deep down with issues he was masking with cold sarcasm. I kept waiting for the switch, the sleight of hand, the trick with him - and the trick was that there wasn’t one. He does care, he does feel, he is human (probably) but he’s still him.

He’s still ruthless, still cold, still removed, still withdrawn and distant because that’s who he is. It’s who he’s always been, it’s a fundamental part of who he’s always going to be and that makes him interesting. Because I think one of the things authors enjoy doing is character building with a focus of starting with something old and creating something new. Something shinier. Something better. Something that fixes all the flaws it once had and ta-da! Perfect!!

And dude I was waiting for this to come allll the way through CK. Because she’d set it up! We had everything we expect!! We had the broody, withdrawn, grumpy, traumatised, aloof sarcastic bastard male character; and we had the softer, warmer, female character and they were very obviously Love Interests, and they had Moments and Lines that were so obviously going to be paralleled later, we had, “I will have you without armour, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all.”

I was ready. I was waiting. It was all there!! So obvious!! The armour was going to come off, torn off, shredded off, in a dramatic moment of Character Growth and Transformation and he was going to kiss her and it was going to be like: I am changed. I am a Good Man now, I am Better, you have made me better, you have made me realise what I want to be and I’m going to declare these feelings by kissing you in a dramatic fashion with a romantic sunset and some fancy explosions in the background.

AND WE GOT APPROXIMATELY NONE OF THAT. ZERO. NIL. NOT A SINGLE SOLITARY SAUSAGE OF IT AND I LOVE IT. (we got some, fine, don’t get pedantic on me but it was nothing like what it was built up to be and that’s GENIUS. how does one sell a literal anti-climax and not only get away with it but making it literally perfect for both the characters and the ship. inspirational tbh)

The thing is that way of working was too easy, would have been too rushed and far too…easy. This story is not easy. This story is hard. This story is having pretty much nothing to begin with then having even that taken from you and clawing your way back to something because dammit I have worked for this and sweated for this and bled for this and you will give it to me or so help me you will suffer me for denying me. Point is nothing is given; nothing is easy, and happy endings are…not always what we think they are.

The Dramatic Romantic Sunset Kiss ending, while very fluffy and probably crowd-pleasing doesn’t entirely suit…either of these characters at this moment tbh. Because they’ve been through a lot and they have grown and they have changed and they are closer but…They’re not ready. And I think it…takes something to admit that. It takes something to let characters be who and what they are and not force them to be what you’d like them to be for the sake of a ship or a nice neat ending tied up with a bow that will make everyone happy.

And I think that’s the thing I enjoy most about Kaz: that he refuses to be anything other than what he is. Kaz is cold and cruel and ruthless and flawed because these are flaws, flaws that stem from…a fairly rough childhood tbh. They aren’t little mars to be gently wiped away with the handkerchief held by the doting female love interest (which Inej…also conveniently refuses to be, bless her existence) and I like that they remain relatively intact by the end of it.

His flaws aren’t argued away by the narrative, they’re not easily cured by the loving touch of a female love interest. They’re raw and they’re ugly and they’re present and they’re constant and they force you to accept him this way or not at all. They don’t get excused. They don’t get diminished. They don’t get gently brushed to one side because oh that was just a moment that made him a bit not nice and we don’t want to linger there. They are him, an aspect that has to be considered and counted and weighed when judging his character; it’s a package deal people, the novels just don’t let you cherry pick bits and pieces here and there, this is it, this is everything, all cards on the table, take it or leave it.

Kaz Brekker is a monster. Kaz Brekker is cold and distant and withdrawn and cloaked in armour he’s not ready to remove yet that isn’t prised from him to try and discover some hidden golden heart beneath. There is none. There’s just cold, hard iron and bitter venom. What’s on the surface is what’s underneath too. And I love it.

ship them with: Ineeeejjjj obviously.

brotp them with: Alllll of the Dregs, actually, it’s all kind of fascinating?? The way he interacts with each of them.
needs to stay away from:….erm…himself?? About the only truly dangerous thing to him tbh.

misc. thoughts: I, ahem, I think I’ve had…more than enough thoughts on Kaz for one day. Yes. Anyway. *gently sets the mic down and scuttles off*

anonymous asked:

I dont even watch yuri on ice but I hate your fandom bruh its too fuckinn big and fuckin everywhere please just stop its just an anime jfc

Omg I was just like you albeit more than a few weeks ago (I think it was yuri on ice episode 3 airing) and yeah I was really weirded out and kinda hating the fandom from afar because WHAT EXACTLY WAS SO GOOD ABOUT ANOTHER FREAKING SPORTS ANIME

But that’s the thing though. Please watch it. Cuz the moment I decided to watch YoI all those weeks ago, THE MOMENT I saw fat Yuuri on screen, my whole opinion on the anime changed. And as each episode aired, I knew I would be iN SO DEEP.

Hate this fandom all you want, but if you declare your hate without ever once watching the anime, you’re missing out on one of the most relatable animes ever because never have I ever seen a character who has weight issues (overcame it), anxiety (fuck me up that one really hit home), a stunning character development alongside every other character developments, ONE OF THE BIGGEST PLOT TWIST EVER, the best portrayal of supportive friends and family and my favourite, the normalisation of two men being in love.

You wanna know what the real best part was? Yuri!!! On Ice didn’t force anything, actually I’m pretty sure they flew over every possible trope in anime history. To the point that it wasn’t about shipping Victor and Yuuri, it was more like… “I wouldn’t be surprised if these two got together” kind of feel. Like how you see REAL PEOPLE. The anime treated the characters in the most human way I’ve ever seen (I don’t even understand my own sentence lol)

And the characters? All of them? They’re some part of me. They all are. And I love how the anime treat ‘me’ right. They showed 'me’ and tinny parts 'me’ and I think that’s why I never hated anyone in the anime. I love Yuri!!! On Ice because I can relate to it so much.

The fandom opinions differs but for someone who has had weight issues, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, a drive to strive, a need for assurance and love (constantly), a social media addict, a cat lover, someone who is passive aggressive, sarcastic and (the list is very long), but for 'me’, Yuri!!! On Ice did a pretty good job allowing me to 'see’ myself in each of the new charas.

So don’t go telling me to stop. Because I won’t let go of the best portrayal of 'me’ and neither will I stop from ever loving Yuri!!! On Ice .

anonymous asked:

i haven't read a published book in years (fanfiction...) and was wondering if u could rec me some? i like large books (i consider 250 pages smoll) that are very thoughtful and deep and have a lot of meaning in them. literally just rec me every book that you remember reading, no matter how long ago you read it. that means it impacted you enough to still keep ap art of itself with you. i will look up every single book you list. thanks so much.

I have a list of book recommendations here, but i’ll narrow it down a little to the books which had a lasting and significant impact upon me.

  1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
this is self explanatory, but i honestly wouldn’t be alive without harry potter. it means more than anything in the world to me. it’s not even a single part of me, i became the person that i am because of that series. please burry me in my house’s colours with my wand clasped between my hands.
  2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt
everything about this book is wonderful. the writing is a masterpiece and the novel is so captivating. it really changes your perspective on the world and leads to a lot of self-analysis. the novel is full of terrible characters, and yet you become so enchanted by richard’s story that you begin to sympathise with them. i think it’s better to read ‘the secret history’ slowly and carefully, as you will have the most memorable reading experience.  tw: incest, murder, death.
  3. Dare Me by Megan Abbott
i can really relate to the characters of this novel and the trope that’s been created from ‘there’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls’. It’s a beautifully written novel and there is a lot to dissect and consider. If you’ve ever felt a never ending discontentment with life and are prone to self-destructive behaviour, i would definitely give this a go. tw: eating disorders, suicide mentions, death.
  4. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brönte
although wuthering heights is a well known classic, many people don’t like it and find it to be a tedious read, but i adore it. i agree that the second half of the narrative is less captivating, but it is beautifully written and the final message of the story is very powerful. it really speaks to me as a story of passion, as passion can be a blissful love but it can also be a murderous rage, terrible decisions and horrific violence. i think brönte tells this perfectly. i also adore the ‘monsters in love’ element of the cathy and healthcliff relationship, because they are terrible people and sometimes that’s a whole lot more interesting to read. also check out this post by ahneboleyn.
  5. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
nabokov is a very talented writer, and lolita is another story about twisted passion and obsession. similarly to wuthering heights, it is more a story of hate than one of love. nabokov’s language stays with you forever, telling the most horrific series of events through beautifully written prose, distracting you from the reality of humbert’s abuse. ‘and the rest is rust and stardust’ is one of my all time favourite quotes. tw: pedophilia, sexual abuse, rape, murder.
  6. 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell
i read both of these books when i was twelve/thirteen, and ever since then they have stayed with me. animal farm made me realise my love for history, as i adored the politics of the story, and it quite possibly lead me to choosing history as my major today. i haven’t read 1984 in a very long time, but i don’t think it’s possible to read without permanently changing your perception of the world and other literature.
  7. Macbeth by William Shakespeare
macbeth is one of my favourite texts of all time and my favourite of all shakespeare’s plays. lady macbeth is one of the most fascinating characters, and i adore her story arc. if you haven’t read it, please give it a go!
  8. Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente
i can’t even begin to describe this book, but it is breathtaking. one of the most well written novels. it definitely isn’t for everyone as it can be a little tricky to follow, but you should check it out.
  9. A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin
i read this when i was fourteen, and i completely devoured each book in under a week. i would read 250 pages a night during the school week, ignoring everything else because i was so lost in the story and characters. i regret reading it so quickly now, as i find it difficult to remember a lot of the minor characters or plots, but it means that a reread will be even better. this series redefines the fantasy genre, telling a very adult and often realistic narrative that happens to have dragons and dark magic. i love this series for bringing sansa stark into my life.
  10. The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
the title is a bit of a spoiler, but it’s written from the perspective of some boys who observe five mysterious sisters in their neighbourhood. this novel perfectly fits the ‘there’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls’ trope that i adore so much. though the subject is quite serious and depressing, the language is enchanting and it almost feels like you’re dreaming. it’s quite a short book, but there is a lot to think about and i’d recommend reading it slowly to truly savour the writing. tw: depression, self harm, suicide.

Other novels that shaped my love for reading from an early age; A Series of Unfortunate Events, Nancy Drew, The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials and all of Jacqueline Wilson’s books.

If you live in the US and have access to Disney Channel, please watch Girl Meets World. It is easily the best show to ever come out of Disney, but is yet to be renewed for a fourth season. The main characters are two girls with the most amazing chemistry (I doubt Disney would ever let them be a thing, but here’s hoping!), and their best friends, an incredibly smart and kind Jewish boy who speaks briefly about his family’s history during the Holocaust, a kind and loyal black boy who is the funniest character on the show, does not give a shit about gender roles (does ballet, favourite movie is The Notebook, loves Celine Dion) and speaks about his family ancestry which heavily implies slavery, an autistic (yes! On a Disney show!) WOC who is the smartest and funniest (yes I know I said that before but she is the funniest too) of them all too and is dating the Jewish boy (power couple!), and then there’s your average white boy character but let’s not talk about him. The show has covered topics such as bullying, single parenthood and distant/absent parents, the importance of jobs like janitors and cafeteria workers, politics and how the wrong people are in power, the importance of the arts and how they need to be taken as seriously as academic subjects, autism, self forgiveness (watch girl meets the forgiveness project!! i beg of you!!), religion, feminism, poverty and privilege, communism, high school vs middle school and the pressure of high school, technology and social media and how our society is obsessed with the internet, teenagers involved with crime and vandalism, good vs evil, why it is important to celebrate and respect different cultures, and so much more. It did have a love triangle during the end of season 2/start of season 3, but it focused much more in the girls and their friendship than it did on the boy, and the end result made a point to prove that platonic love can trump romantic love (if you watch the show in storyline order than the stupid order disney aired it in it makes much more sense). The show isn’t without its issues (*cough* heteronormativity *cough*) but it is such a huge step for disney (disney doesn’t deserve it tbh) and is worth the watch and the support. Not to mention the cast are amazing, Rowan Blanchard who plays the main character is not only a wonderful actor but an outspoken activist (follow her on ig and twitter) and is way more woke at 14 than most people will ever be, Sabrina Carpenter is an amazing young singer who is about to come out with her second album, Corey Fogelmanis is a photographer (follow his ig), and Amir Mitchell-Townes is an activist who savagely took down another cast member after they posted something racist on instagram. If a fourth season happens we are hoping for episodes about sexuality, racism, and more mature topics. Please support the show.

what ten books would you personally recommend everyone to read? like, books that struck a deep chord within you and you hope it could do with others.

I am fairly certain I have mentioned these books at one time or another, but ten books that struck a chord deep within me / changed my life are as follows

The Secret History by Donna Tarrt. I think it’s fairly obvious why I so adore this book ; I love the characters and the plot and the writing and the classical elements. This book was the catalyst into my changing universities (I’m very happy with my three Classics classes and one Latin, now) and it also helped me to find my niche on tumblr and meet the most amazing people.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This was the first series to seize me completely (in a similar fashion to how Harry Potter affected a lot of people, I read Harry Potter as a very young child so it’s more a part of me than a book series) but god, I loved everything about these books, Katniss, the games, the way the rebellion unfolded and the ideas and themes, and then the movies. I’ve written papers on this, I’ve written meta, it’s just a series that keeps on giving.

Fire by Kristin Cashore. The only book that I will use the word “perfection” for. It’s got beautiful writing and beautiful characters and it’s so utterly engaging and I love everything about it, when I read it, it’s like visiting an old friend.

Dare Me by Megan Abbot. The book that revealed to me the sort of book I would like to write. The book that wrenched me in two and made the world make sense; the book that is etched onto my bones, along with the phrase there’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls.

Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente. Simply one of the most clever books I’ve ever read, with some fucking incredible prose. The way she told the story, the mix of myth and history and original plot was just mindblowing to me.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Andersen. The first time I read this book, I was aching in my bones. The writing was so raw and so real and so dangerously poetic all at the same time.

Mistress / Empress of Rome by Kate Quinn. Hands down the best historical fiction novel I’ve ever read, I read this book while studying how Rome came to be and it was set in the thick of the Roman Empire with vibrant characters and references to history and it was just incredible.

The Book Thief by Marcus Zuzak. A work of art. A mastery of words. Nothing more needs to be said.

The Seven Ancient Wonders by Matthew Reilly. I declared the Seven Ancient Wonders series to be my favourite at age 15 and I’ve carried it with me since. The mix of history and mythology and archaeology and military drew me in and never let me out and the team, the team that’s formed, I love them. They’re my fictional family babies.

The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. I’m always reluctant to bring this up in conjunction to the other novels on this list. My girlfriend laughs at me because I love them so much. But really, I adore them. They are as much a part of me as the Secret History. I can’t help but love them, and I can’t get enough of them, and I could legitimately write meta on them.

Holiday Prompts

I was going to hold off on posting these, but then I realised Hanukkah has already started so I figured I’d better hop to it!

  • The protagonist’s best friend is taken aback by some of their family’s unconventional holiday traditions
  • What is your character’s favourite part of the holidays?
  • “No school! Now I will have time to build my reactor!”
  • Your protagonists’ one wish for the holiday season
  • The best present anybody has ever given in the history of planet earth
  • Talking holiday food
  • A spell is cast that causes your character to sing holiday songs nonstop
  • “No return policy.“
November Fizzle Recs

Hii, fellow booknerds!

We’re a tad late in posting but it’s time for our monthly feature: Fizzle Recs! Each month we pick a theme and recommend our favorites that we feel fit into that category. For the month of November, we decided to choose books we’d love to see made into movies or tv shows: [Seriously, the world is missing out if these books don’t get optioned!!!]

  • Almera: The Lynburn Legacy by Sarah Rees Brennan. This series is one of my all time favourites and would make a great tv show. The ensemble cast are so great and memorable it would be amazing to see their dynamics on screen if done well with a great cast. With each episode they’d unlock a mystery in their spooky and magical town, it would be so cool!
  • Eri: Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. One of my all-time favorite books, this would make the perfect movie to go in smiling and come out sobbing to your heart’s content. It’s stunningly written, with the most heart-wrenching scenes and there is such raw emotion and pain the characters it’s impossible not to be touched by this book. Enough said, this movie would be utterly fantastic. There’s been talk of a movie anyhow, so I might get my wish sooner rather than never.
  • Jae: Sempre by J.M Darhower. I think this series would make such great action/romance movies. The characters are all so memorable and I love the sweet and innocent romance that blossoms between Haven and Carmine. I love the DeMarco family, flaws and all. This is a mafia book but it’s hard to label them as ‘bad guys’. But the family dynamic is sooooo good. Even uncle Corrado peaked my interest. These movies would have me clutching my heart until the end.
  • Jessi: Welcome To The Underworld by Con Template. These books are so amazing, I’m dying for a kdrama! The main character has so much spunk in her, I couldn’t put these books down for a while. The love interest is hot (too hot tbh) and the tension between the two makes up for the slow burn… which kdramas are known for their slow burn so really it’s perfect! While, I still haven’t finished the last book yet (and probably still won’t by the time we post this, lol), I love this series and everything I’ve seen from it so far. I’d kill to see it on a screen somewhere someday!
  • Katie: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. Marissa Meyer sets up a great fantasy/sci-fi world that would be amazing to be explored on screen. More than that, it would be so much fun to see the banter from the gang and the cool action scenes. If the casting was done right, this would be such a great film adaption for all audiences!
  • Laura: The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes I think this would be an awesome tv shows. It has the scandal and House of Cards vibes but with teenagers and there is nothing like that.. The characters are all badass and fantastic and really A++++
  • Lisa: Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta. Marchetta herself said she’d like to turn LC into a TV show once. I want to weep every time I imagine seeing all the characters in the flesh (although it would be hard to cast them, imo). It would be gritty with lots of pain and plot twists and it would be EPIC.
  • Nazeefa: The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. I would only ever approve of this adaptation if it was done properly as a BBC miniseries. Seeing a character driven story with action and amazing costumes… I’d just die! The reason I would prefer this as a TV series instead of a movie is because I think the world Marie Rutkoski has created has a lot of potential to be expanded upon. I would love to see more of the history between the Herrani and Valorians brought up.
  • Siiri: Addicted Series by Krista and Becca Ritchie. These books are my favourite in this entire universe, so this is an obvious choice! This series has Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and all sorts of other similar vibes. There’s epic ships, great friendships, family dynamics, big omfg moments and so much character growth! I feel like even for people who don’t love reading books, these rad characters and their everyday struggles would be so relatable, entertaining and emotional to watch. And, yes, I am selfishly looking forward to seeing Rose Calloway and Connor Cobalt on any sort of screen other than my Kindle, thank you very much!
  • Sil: The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig. When I read this book I thought it fit so well to be turned into a tv show and each season it’d b like an adventure! Traveling-time ships, history, magical countries and a diverse cast you just want to know more about with each passing chapter.**
  • Sue: The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco. Inspired by the well-known Japanese ghost story “Bancho Sarayashiki”, The Girl from the Well’s plot and theme would translate very well in a film. Set in America and sinister valley in Japan, we have an avenging ghost for a protagonist, Okiku, targeting predatory men. Sign me up. This story will satisfy any horror fan and curious looker.

A quick note on diversity and representation in media

My name is Ly and I’m 23 years old. Most people my age are generally able to do the things they want to do without their physical body holding them back. I have an auto-immune disease, and thus do not have this luxury.

What this means for me is that aside from the fact that I can’t eat a lot of the time, I heal very slowly, and I’m so anemic I’ve needed several blood transfusions, is that I have crippling joint pain and muscle soreness. This comes both from the disease itself and the mutilating steroids I have to take just to survive. On my worst days I walk with both a cane and a person to assist me, and on my best days I still have a very noticeable limp. Some have even gone so far as to call it a ‘waddle’. I had to give up a career as a dancer because of this.

The Penguin from the DC universe has been a favourite of mine for many years, but with Gotham’s reimagining of the character, my life has changed for the better. Here is a young man who becomes disabled very early on in the series, but his plotlines have little to nothing to do with his disability. He has an incredibly severe limp, his body has limitations that other characters’ don’t, but he’s by far one of, if not the most badass character in the show. He becomes the king of Gotham, and his leg injury is not a pity device used to garner sympathy from the viewers, nor have I ever felt that it’s used to make him seem grotesque or disgusting. It’s just there, a part of his history, a part of him.

This depiction of one of my favourite characters as disabled but capable has made me cry with joy on more than one occasion. Not only is there someone I can now cosplay without my cane, there are just so few characters in sci-fi/fantasy settings that are disabled, being able to see someone I’ve always enjoyed and love as someone like me has meant the world to me and has helped me to hold on through my struggle of being trapped in my own body.

I am Disabled. I am Capable. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Thank you to the Gotham writers and Mr. Taylor for reminding me of this.

What are your thoughts on Varric and Hawke's friendship? And his role in Inquisition? I loved having him there as he's one of my all-time favourite Bioware characters, but at the same time it felt a little odd to have him following the Inquisitor rather than Hawke?

varric and hawke’s friendship is one of the most important in the history of ever??? i love their relationship so much because they 1000% have each other’s backs and they’re both loyal and will do anything to protect the people they care about and i really  love that about them. i think the one time i cried in inquisition was when i found out varric had lied about hawke’s whereabouts and he tells cassandra, “you know what i think? if hawke had been there he/she’d be dead too. you’ve people have done enough to him/her.” and storms out. that moment was just so incredibly powerful and one thing inquisition did so so so right in terms of varric and hawke’s relationship.

as for having varric as a companion in inquisition? that i’m if-y about. on the one hand, i adore varric. on the other hand i had the nostalgia goggles on for the varric in DA2. he didn’t really seem to want to be there with the inquisition. it wasn’t his little misfit family. and even his personal quest just seemed sort of messily thrown together with no real closure. that being said i don’t think varric really belongs with the inquisition at all, and he definitely suits being at hawke’s side a lot more. then again i’m also of the firm belief that inquisition should have continued hawke’s story at the forefront much like mass effect did shepard’s because hawke’s story feels like it’s far from over and it just seems ???? weird to suddenly have a new hero thrown at us while also featuring a previous playable character from the game before it. and i say that because to many people their hawke had a well defined personality and set of beliefs that got thrown out the window with the way they wrote hawke in inquisition and it was incredibly jarring.

sorry for the rant. i love hawke and varric to bits so a lot of the writing in inquisition bugs me to no end.
