Adam Rainer is the only person in recorded history to have been both a dwarf and a giant. In 1917, at the age of 18, he was denied entry into the army because, at just 4ft tall, he was considered too short (a typical defining characteristic of dwarfism is an adult height below 4ft 10 inches). However, by the age of 32 Adam had reached a height of 7ft 2 inches, and when he died at the age of 51 he was he was 7ft 10inches tall. It is likely that his growth spurt was caused by a pituitary tumour.
“ I never really got
bullied for my red hair, I knew some kids who really struggled with it.
It’s ridiculous. There’s such a big stigma about ginger hair. People
think you’re geeky or this or that. I’ve never thought about dyeing it.
It’s just part of who I am.” —
