Okay so!!! The Handmaiden is rly rly good!!!!

It’s definitely. not what I was expecting lol. There were no less than four completely shocking plot twists - the first half of the movie pretends to be a slightly melancholy Asian lesbian period drama and then the second half hits you in the fucking face with some heavy shit, pulls the rug out from under you, and then keeps pulling the rug out from under you until the very end. Like?? Literally every time you think you know what’s actually happening, something new occurs to turn it all on its head again. Critics aren’t labeling this one a thriller by accident.

Some Very Bad things happen to the women and there is a severe amount of misogynist and ableist abuse heaped on them, HOWEVER, the ending is very happy and the most satisfying thing I’ve ever fucking seen in my whole god damn life. It’s a HAPPY ending, one that so completely sticks it to the nasty abusive male characters that it kind of left me in shock.

So!! In the end I rly recommend it!! It’s Long and deals with a lot of awful subject matter but ultimately (and this is something I was worried abt… like a lot) it doesn’t feel like torture porn to me.The way that the abuse is handled is explicit, but it’s also not gratuitous imo? It doesn’t feel like it’s meant to be titilating at all. Every scene, every shot, adds to the story in a way that’s meaningful, and the abuse is very intentionally framed as horrific and awful instead of as something you should be getting off to.

There’s a sex scene at the end that felt a liiiiiiitle gratuitous but that’s my only fucking problem with the whole god damn thing, I loved it!!

And now for an extensive list of triggers under the cut for those who want to watch a lesbian movie with a Happy Ending but should rly know what they’re getting into beforehand:

- Thanks for everything.
- It was nothing. It’s just that… you seem so lost. I was worried. You need to let people help you, or you’ll end up all alone.

I love you. I am in love with you. I will love you forever. No matter what. I’m yours. Okay? I’m yours.

quinn and diana post-FAYZ:

when diana begins to feel like a third wheel with sam and astrid, she goes to quinn, who she gets along with better than either of them expected. it turns out quinn is pretty good at listening, but also isn’t quite as unaffected by the aftermath of the FAYZ as he appears to be.

they recover together.

I don’t believe you did any of this for a pardon, or a passage to Nassau, or to be able to walk away from anything. I think you intend to reclaim your captaincy. I think you intend to take control of this ship. And then I think you intend to return to that beach, armed to the teeth, and seize every last ounce of gold off of it.

“Raylan being Raylan has zero sentimentality, specifically because it’s Arlo, but I also think in general he’s just not a sentimental guy.”
