favorite korean films

Best works of Lee Joo ki you'd recommend based on subtlety and strength of his performance? I'm midway through Moon Lovers, and he is extremely brilliant it hurts, I need backup choices nice and tidy before I'm even done with it, because I know I'll never get enough of him. Thank you in advance, I love your blog by the way.

I’m glad you like the blog! Thanks for dropping by. Lee Joon Ki is incredible, isn’t he? I’ve by no means watched all of his dramas and movies, but I’ll do my best to give recommendations.

For movies:

Here’s a link to my double feature review of Fly, Daddy, Fly and King and the Clown. I recommend both very highly and go into more detail there, but King and the Clown is my favorite Korean film and the movie that more or less launched LJK’s career. For good reason. He’s young, and he’s definitely honed his craft since, but I think it’s a good place to start.

For dramas:

Two Weeks: I really like Tae San. I know some people didn’t care for him. I love the way he sometimes breaks out of panic mode and realizes how messed up his situation is as well as how woefully unprepared he is to deal with and has a complete break down. He’s a really layered, screwed up person and LJK made me buy him. Also, all of his interactions with the little girl are gold.

Arang and The Magistrate: I don’t think Eun Oh is necessarily LJK’s best work, but I really loved this drama. And I loved his character. I found him very funny and appealing and he’s got a very sweet, simple chemistry with Shin Min Ah. Also, he gets to show off his martial arts/wire work.

Hmm…that pretty much covers my recs. I haven’t seen a lot of his older stuff. I’ve heard a little about Time Between Dog and Wolf, Iljimae, Joseon Gunman, etc. but I haven’t seen any of them, so I can’t speak for them personally. He’s only the second lead in My Girl but I recall liking his character. Not enough that I had SLS though. The only drama I’ve seen with him in it that I would not recommend is Scholar Who Walks The Night. He’s pretty enough, but somehow he lacks personality and charm. I blame direction and lack of good character writing. It’s so so bad. Spare yourself.
