favorite british artist of the year

Freddie didn’t announce publicly that he had AIDS until the day before he died in 1991. Although he was flamboyant onstage — an electric front man on par with Bowie and Jagger — he was an intensely private man offstage. But Freddie told me he had AIDS soon after he was diagnosed in 1987. I was devastated. I’d seen what the disease had done to so many of my other friends. I knew exactly what it was going to do to Freddie. As did he. He knew death, agonizing death, was coming. But Freddie was incredibly courageous. He kept up appearances, he kept performing with Queen, and he kept being the funny, outrageous, and profoundly generous person he had always been.

As Freddie deteriorated in the late 1980s and early ’90s, it was almost too much to bear. It broke my heart to see this absolute light unto the world ravaged by AIDS. By the end, his body was covered with Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions. He was almost blind. He was too weak to even stand.

By all rights, Freddie should have spent those final days concerned only with his own comfort. But that wasn’t who he was. He truly lived for others. Freddie had passed on November 24, 1991, and weeks after the funeral, I was still grieving. On Christmas Day, I learned that Freddie had left me one final testament to his selflessness. I was moping about when a friend unexpectedly showed up at my door and handed me something wrapped in a pillowcase. I opened it up, and inside was a painting by one of my favorite artists, the British painter Henry Scott Tuke. And there was a note from Freddie. Years before, Freddie and I had developed pet names for each other, our drag-queen alter egos. I was Sharon, and he was Melina. Freddie’s note read, “Dear Sharon, thought you’d like this. Love, Melina. Happy Christmas.”

I was overcome, forty-four years old at the time, crying like a child. Here was this beautiful man, dying from AIDS, and in his final days, he had somehow managed to find me a lovely Christmas present. As sad as that moment was, it’s often the one I think about when I remember Freddie, because it captures the character of the man. In death, he reminded me of what made him so special in life.

Freddie touched me in a way few people ever have, and his brave, private struggle with AIDS is something that inspires me to this day

Jorja Smith might in fact be a favorite new artist after the 18 year old British newcomer lured me in with debut song Blue Lights. The pop song combines the hooking beats of hip hop with the sultry sass of R&B, all drenched in plenty of earthy soulfulness. Blue Lights is fresh and captivating, a gorgeously soulful song that reminds me of Sia and Rihanna with some Lauryn Hill. I can’t wait to hear more Jorja Smith.

what are some of your favourite journal pictures you've seen on tumblr, like ones that really inspire you? :)

Hard question. I’ve seen A LOT of inspirational pictures of journals on tumblr. There are still a bunch of pictures I haven’t seen yet. Here are a couple of personal favorites from fuckyeahjournalss:

(click on the photo for the post on fuckyeahjournalss, you can find the original source in the link under the photo)

This is definitely one of my favorite posts. A 83 year old British gentleman shows off Britain’s biggest personal journal which he’s been writing for 66 years! He has 151 volumes! 151 JOURNALS! Amazing. Here’s a video, it’s an incredible story.

The story of Dan Eldon also keeps inspiring me. Dan was an English photojournalist, artist and activist. He and three colleagues were stoned to death by an angry mob in Mogadishu in an incident before the Battle of Mogadishu (1993). He left 17 journals behind. At around fifteen, Eldon helped support a Maasai family by buying their handmade jewelry, later selling it to fellow students and friends. It was during this time he started to create journals filled with collages, photographs, and drawings. He often used satire and cartoons as commentary. He kept the journals as personal statements, which he shared with only a few people. Such an inspiration! Watch the video!

Largest Tomb Raider Collection Featured in Guinness World Records 2015: Gamer’s Edition

Congratulations to Tomb Raider mega-fan Rodrigo Martín Santos, who has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for having the largest collection of Tomb Raider Memorabilia in the world.

Rodrigo’s collection will make any Croft collector green with envy, boasting over 2,400 unique items from the assortment of video games, comics, and movies starring Lara. His collection is so large it’s split between his family home and his flat in Madrid. He’s even opened a website dedicated to collecting.

“I became a fan of Tomb Raider in 1996 when I was a child, at 9 years old, when I discovered the first images of Lara Croft in a Spanish magazine,” says Rodrigo. “I will never forget it. It came with a few sketches by the British video game artist Toby Gard, the creator of Lara Croft. I have spent 18 years collecting memorabilia from the Tomb Raider saga. I started buying items of Lara Croft because I liked them, not for collecting them, but there comes a day when you have so many that you have become a collector.”

Rorigo’s favorite items include a sketch from Toby Gard, his life-sized Lara statues, and the original promotional costume worn by Rhona Mitra, the model for Tomb Raider II.

As a surprise, we’re adding two more items to Rodrigo’s Tomb Raider collection - a Sister of Artemis notebook made for internal studio staff only, and original storyboard sketches from Tomb Raider: Anniversary, showing Lara meeting Natla for the first time.

Congratulations Rodri! You can check out other gaming related records here

  • patrick: Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus, 25 August 1954) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. He began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement of the mid-to-late 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, was recorded in 1977. Shortly after recording it he formed the Attractions as his backing band. His second album, This Year's Model, was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967–1987. His third album, Armed Forces, was released in 1979, and features his most successful single "Oliver's Army". His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Man little mix performing at the brits 2016(finally) after the brits ignoring the girls and their success for 4YEARS!!!!!!

I can just say..i feel so proud my heart could burst!!!!

We would get so pissed every year when they didn’t perform or get nominated…..but now their time has come.

I just know for a fact with all my heart..they’re gonna smash it and leave us speechless…like they do everytime they have a big performance (teen choice awards \ both times on xfactor 2015)

I’m so happy for them..as fan..you want your favorite artists to be successful in everything they do. And nobody deserves this more than little mix..they’ve worked their lil british bums off for 4 years and still are!!!!

I actually could cry..I’m so excited for the girls. Like first black magic 3 weeks at number 1..then get weird at number 2..then get weird platinum in 7 weeks..now performing at the Brits.

We are so blessed to be alive while little mix are having their moment.
