The car’s on fire and there’s no driver at the wheel
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
and a dark wind blows

the government is corrupt
and we’re on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn

we’re trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
and the machine is bleeding to death

the sun has fallen down
and the billboards are all leering
and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

it went like this:

the buildings tumbled in on themselves
mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble
and pulled out their hair

the skyline was beautiful on fire
all twisted metal stretching upwards
everything washed in a thin orange haze

i said: “kiss me, you’re beautiful -
these are truly the last days”

you grabbed my hand and we fell into it
like a daydream or a fever

we woke up one morning and fell a little further down -
for sure it’s the valley of death

i open up my wallet
and it’s full of blood

If you care enough to listen to the rest of the song, here’s part 2 of ‘Dead Flag Blues’ by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. If you were so inclined, you could find this track on the album f#a#oo (pronounced f sharp a sharp infinity)

It feels a bit funny calling this 'proto-post rock’ but that’s what GY!BE is so…

EARLIER

I really love The Dead Flag Blues, but I always feel like it should end two minutes earlier than it does. I love the desolate, hopeless feel of the rest of the song, and the big crescendo from like, 11 - 14 minutes breaks my heart. Then when it fades down and out again with just the bass and guitar, it feels like that would make a more fitting end to the song instead of that twinkly upbeat xylophone section that comes in a few seconds later.

It just feels so detached from the rest of the music, like it should be part of a completely different song altogether, and it almost ruins the mood of the song for me.
