fans are waiting

i hope the new beauty and the beast remake means that “beauty and the beast au” becomes a popular fan fic trope because honestly when it’s done well (aka: realistic slow burn like the movie and not rushed/creepy) it’s really cute and heartwarming and honestly every ship needs a beauty and the beast au

No wonder why my wallet was so thin when I left the hall, bought 26 doujinshis and many goods to last me a while ^.^

Supergirl: Valentine’s Day

When you hype something up to be a special episode, we as fans take notice. We wait on pins and needles, absorbing any kind of spoiler we can get our hands on hoping to piece together what is going to happen. We want to be surprised but we are super fans and find it almost impossible to stay spoiler free.

Then the episode comes to pass and you sit and let it digest for a moment. Now most people say that you should get a life and not think so hard about a tv show, however, there is nothing wrong with feeling strongly about entertainment. Just like people feel strongly about music, art and science, tv is another form of art that can generate just as much love and hate. So as you sit and let the episode sink in a part of you wants to justify things in it so you don’t automatically pass judgment. After a good nights sleep, I think I am ready to actually look at this episode.

Now, for the record, I actually like Mxy. He represents a part of the alien world we don’t normally see. Most times, the aliens in this universe are portrayed as good or evil and they all seem to have baggage. He was neither. His intentions were misguided and so the results were catastrophic. Since he is an all seeing godlike being, for him to want to come in and take his bride, whatever means necessary, would seem about right. He wanted love but didn’t really understand how we humans perceive love to be. So I guess it’s kind of lost in translation.

That being said, that’s where I justify why Kara would pick Mon-el. We all have that friend who dates the one person you despise – not because they aren’t a match, but because they aren’t truthful about things and they just annoy the crap out of you. They are arrogant and they think that a few words can make you overlook all their flaws. Now to me, that seems somewhat manipulative, but that would fit in the context of your friend falling for the wrong guy. So… I will give the writers leeway as to why they would go that route no matter how cringeworthy their scenes are.

Now many would argue that the main story of this episode was that it was Valentine’s day… Really? That’s just weak. But as I take a harder look at this episode, I realize this was just filler space to make it alright for Kara and Mon-el to come together. Hey man, whatever floats your boat, because we all have couples we cheer for. What I don’t agree with is the fact that you tease this as a certain centric episode and this is actually your main content.

Now I know that many would argue that I am biased, and yah I am. But to make things fair, I loved the Winn scenes. It has taken Winn 2 and a half seasons to finally find that one girl who makes him stutter like an idiot and she is genuinely interested in him. For the 5 minutes they had on screen I was cheering the writers for finally giving my boy someone to call his own. He didn’t have to play second fiddle to Jimmy or Mon-el, and honestly I have no problems with that. Now did it fit the show? Nah… It had nothing to do with the main storyline, you could literally delete all those scenes and no one would have noticed, but because they added it in, it gave people a chance to cheer for Winn.

Why was that important? Because Winn is integral to the show, but by no means can you say that this was a winn-centric episode. That being said, this brings me to Sanvers. They teased it as a Sanvers-centric episode, and just like my boy Winn, they got about 5 minutes of actual screen time. If you delete their scenes, the storyline would still progress and no one would have been the wiser. So why do it?

Because, unfortunately, one of my favorite shows is falling prey to popular opinion. Ever hear that old adage “You can’t please everyone?” If you want to tell a story, you’re going to have to toughen up. The thing about any gay storyline, you will have die hard fans because let’s face it, there aren’t many shows to pull from. We are starved for any kind of representation but we aren’t stupid.

I thought that the Alex storyline was progressing well. She is an integral part of the show, just like Winn, so what’s the hurry? Social pressures state that we want representation and we want it now, however, understand if you tell it right, we will wait. This is why, for Alex to take 7 episodes to realise she was gay, tell her family and friends, sat right with us. Did it dominate the main stories? No, it was told on the side and you got a glimpse of what her personal life looked like. That was important because just like when we got a glimpse of J’onn’s real story, this character became real to us.

Now this is still a show about a superhero and it is grounded in the relationship between sisters and friends. If you cut everything out, the one thing everyone relates to are the real feelings surrounding these characters. Also, they have built very strong female characters that empower younger fans, and I think they need to stick to that.

Understand, I loved this episode, but not because everybody got their man / woman, but because it was a little different from your normal episodes. We know that Cadmus is the main storyline of the season, and we know that somewhere Mon-el’s storyline will come to fruition as well, so the lightheartedness of this episode was a nice change. Could it have been told better? Probably… But this is what it is.

On a side note, writers please don’t give into social pressures. I feel you have done an awesome job in telling the different stories and weaving these characters into people we can care about. Take the time that’s needed to fully round out these storylines because your fans deserve that. And for the life of me, don’t tease something and then fall short. You are better than that.
