Don’t get me wrong, I love JKR and love everything canon, however, Slytherin’s in the books are (rather terribly) always described as evil, ugly, stupid or all of the above with the exception of Draco Malfoy. Canonically, Millicent Bulstrode is described as ogre-like, Pansy on more than one occasion is described as a dog and she has no relevance to anything other than being a bitch. Crabbe and Goyle are described as stupid and negatively associated with being overweight (not that that is a bad thing in some situations). Marcus Flint, held back for being stupid, is a manipulative cheater with bad teeth. Blaise Zabini’s only character depth is that although he is attractive and presumably very smart, his mum is a whore so he must be evil.
People get mad when people assume Slytherin’s are bad… and that is all the fault of the author of the Harry Potter series herself, whether intentional or coincidental.
As a fandom who are still so active after so many years, we have built a beautiful fanon world where anything and anyone is up to our own personal, colourful interpretation.
Thanks to us, Pansy Parkinson may be a typical mean girl because she has insecurities about hiding her lesbian relationship or she may be a kickass feminist. Marcus Flint may have a crippling crush on Oliver Wood and he may be a muggle who was adopted by purebloods. Millicent Bulstrode is now no longer an ogre but a beautiful girl with a soft stomach and round face and contagious smile. Even Draco Malfoy has been developed by us, the readers, in such a way that we sometimes even cry at the things that he’s been through WHEN HE HASN’T EVEN CANONICALLY BEEN THROUGH THEM.
Imagine the common room full of cold, frowning, ugly people. Then imagine the common room full of these eclectic, cunning and determined characters. Imagine which common room you would rather be in.
That’s why I will always support any headcanon you throw my way, Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, major character, minor character, real ship, fake ship, golden trio era, marauder era, next generation; anything, because fanon just makes things 100 times better.
A peek at Team Avatar Alumni! (It might be hard to see, but their hair is gray and their wrinkles are more evident close-up.)
Mako - about to turn 50 years old. Chief of Police of Republic City and Deputy Director of the United Republic Secret Service (agents that protect high-profile politicians). He is about to celebrate 32 years in the police force. Mako divorced his first wife at age 31 and buried himself in his work to cope. At age 35, he was assigned to manage the security detail of the Fire Nation Representative to the Global Assembly (A UN-like organization created by Avatar Korra), and the representative just so happened to be the Fire Nation’s Princess. She made his job difficult in that she kept escaping to explore the city without bodyguards, tried to tease him, etc. Eventually, his irritation towards her turned into affection, and they fell in love and eloped. For many years he has faced occasional pressure to resign from his position due to his very political, high-profile marriage, but close ties between the Fire Nation and United Republic have made it a non-issue for the most part. He is still something of a workaholic, and his relationship with his teenage daughter (from his first marriage) is strained.
Bolin - 48 years old. Filmmaker, television director, advertising director for Future Industries, entrepreneur, self-proclaimed “super secret agent”, former police officer, former soldier in Kuvira’s Army, former mover star, former pro-bending star. Bolin married Opal when they were both in their mid-twenties, and they had four children. Half of the family are airbenders, and the other half are earthbenders, so Bolin and Opal decided to rotate their homes between Zaofu, Republic City, and the Air Temples. Opal is a teacher at the Air Temples and also does international humanitarian work, and Bolin is currently “in between projects” - meaning he hit a writer’s block in his latest film and is taking a long vacation to the dismay of his assistants and producers. His oldest daughter is an ambitious metalbender hoping to study architecture in university, his outgoing twin boys include an airbender and an earthbender, and his youngest daughter is a shy airbender.
Asami Sato - About to turn 50 years old. CEO of Future Industries, the world’s second largest technology / industry company. She has focused much more on global development and poverty reduction in the last few years, making her one of the most famous philanthropists and businesswomen in the world… still trying to decide if she and Korra adopted kids, and if so how many. Thoughts?
My favorite Iron Bull is the Iron Bull who doesn’t have time for anyone’s toxic masculinity. He likes pink because it’s pretty, he owns his sexuality, he feels his emotions (physically. With the Feelings Stick) and he doesn’t get caught up in whether men look or act a certain way.
He’s intelligent, he can be gentle, he gets honestly excited, he loves his friends. He doesn’t apologize for any of it.
At this point in fandom, we have some pretty strong headcanons and fanon going on, but I’d like to take the time to remind fans that a lot of it it is personal conjecture and fan theories.
the following things are strong theories that are actually not confirmed by official sources in any way
Pidge is trans / non-binary Pidge has never been confirmed to be trans. Although many of her experiences reflect a coming-out story, none of this has been confirmed. The only thing that has happened in the show is her admission to the team that she is a girl, and that she was confused by alien bathroom signs.
Pidge is asexual This is a headcanon of Pidge’s VA, Bex, and not confirmed
Pidge is snarky / a memer / ships everyone She makes jokes in the show, but she isn’t deadpan, nor does she attack other team members for no reason. Her jabs usually only come when already provoked. She also shows very little interest in romance, her own or others.
Keith is Korean This came from Dirty Laundry the fic, and the fact that Steven Yuen, Keith’s VA is Korean. Keith has not been confirmed to have any race so far. He hasn’t even been confirmed to be Asian. (Though it’s very likely that he is)
Keith is Texan While Keith’s father in the flashback does have a southern accent, his location, and that of the Garrison have never been confirmed.
Keith is gay Keith’s sexuality has not been confirmed. It is not ooc to pair him in fic and art with female characters, because it’s not established that he is canonically gay.
Keith, Lance and Hunk’s last names are Kogane, McClain and Garret Not confirmed. These last names come from previous versions of the show and are used as fan placeholders until we know the real ones. The only confirmed last named are Takashi Shirogane and Pidge Gunderson / Katie Holt
Shiro and Keith are adopted siblings Although they are said to be “like brothers” in the show and by the creators, there is no evidence that they were legally adopted together or shared life outside of the Garrison.
Everyone is mean to Lance They’re just not? Lance has lower self-esteem than the rest of the team, but he doesn’t hate them and they don’t hate him. His rivalry with Keith is merely shallow bickering over petty things. he calls Keith his rival, not his enemy.
Lance’s mother is abusive / his sister is protective, etc All portrayals of Lance’s family are fanon at this point since we have not seen them in the show besides the photograph in Lance’s mind in season 1.
Lance is abusive to Keith Lance and Keith egg each other on, but neither has attacked the other to the point of real hurt. They compete, but neither feels like the other is an enemy.
Lance harasses women When Lance flirts with alien girls, they are usually smiling and giggling, not giving him sour faces. Plaxum willingly kissed him. The princess in the comic books respected him. Allura dislikes his flirting, but Lance stops before he goes overboard.
Lance is bisexual Lance’s sexuality has not been confirmed.
So, next time you’re reading a fic or looking at art and your instinct is to go “This is ooc!” flip back and think about what is actually in the show and what is just popular fanon right now. Something that doesn’t line up with your personal headcanon isn’t bad or wrong, it’s just someone else’s interpretation of the series.
EDIT: Before this takes off on a certain side of tumblr
There is absolutely no canonical evidence for romance between Shiro and Keith or Shiro and any of the other paladins. Shiro is 25. Keith is 17. Have a nice day.
as we get closer to stranger things season two and (possibly) a new trailer dropping, i hope the fandom remembers that while headcanons are nice, odds are they are just that and not to get upset or mad when the show ends up doing something completely different than what they expected
So, this is weird, and idk if it’s just me, but…I think I actually ship Klance more than I used to? Not that I didn’t love them before, but it’s a different kind of love now. And I think the fandom feels that way, too…this past year, we’ve thrived on mostly fanon content: fics, art, headcanons, etc. A lot of that would incorporate canon into it, but efforts were focused on the fanon aspect, on what they could be, on interactions they could have. But now…I’ve seen more meta on the characters and their relationship during the season over the last few DAYS than I have over the course of this entire YEAR. Most, if not all of the Klance content I’ve seen this weekend, art included, has been based around their actual, canon interactions in the show, and not our HOPES for their interactions.
Genji: Just kind of chilling beneath a shady tree with Zenyatta. Ocassionally glances at Hanzo, who refuses to make eye contact with him. Is wearing swim-trunks. No one knows why.
McCree: Reeks of beer and smoke. Being overly-friendly and very loud. No one really minds. Keeps trying to give the younger heroes “life advice”. At least he hasn’t thrown up yet. No one knows how he managed to get so smashed off of, like, 4 beers. Truth is, he was drunk when he got there. Snuck D.va a sip of his beer when Mercy and 76 weren’t looking. She hated it. He laughed.
Pharah: Wearing jeans and a long sleeved shirt, even though it’s, like, 90 degrees Fahrenheit(32 C). Doesn’t get why everyone else is complaining about the heat. Chatting with 76 and Mercy near the grill. Enjoying herself more than she’s letting on.
I KNOW in most fandoms everyone loves to draw/write the male lead with great abs. Six packs! They make the girl, guy, whatever romantic interest drool when they see these fantastic abs. They’re defined, perfect, glistening, whatever… but for most guys wouldn’t actually exist. Sorry Harry, James, I love you both but I’m doubting the six pack. Tony Stark? Nah. (Steve Rogers though, but that’s another story) Draco Malfoy, doubtful. Maxon? Eh, maybe. Maybe.
But Percy Jackson?
This boy is out fighting and training all day every day, with every muscle in his body, and he’s part god. It’s physiologically realistic that he’d have some fantastic abs on him, and the demigod thing just adds to it. And this is my absolute favorite thing EVER- all those works of art are believable, every moment where Annabeth drools over the gorgeous abs, yes, completely real. So here’s a moment for Percy Jackson and his abs, because it’s canon that they’re totally amazing (and everything else about him too).
I have mixed feelings about the way people approach Wolfstar height in fanfic, as canonically I believe Sirius is described as fairly tall (though that may just be young Harry’s perspective) and I don’t believe Remus’ height is ever really remarked on in the books. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Remus can’t canonically be taller than Sirius, and the fanon definitely tends toward a tall Remus and a slightly shorter Sirius, which I feel is quite satisfying as well as congruous to their overall personas/dynamic.
So when writers imply that Sirius is a bit taller, I maybe don’t prefer it, but I generally make allowances, as they’re thinking it through and going based on canon in a sense. But when writers try to make Remus all tiny and meek and gracile compared to Sirius, I just cannot stand it.
Remus may be thinner (though the weight issue may be different post-Azkaban, when Sirius is basically all sallow, tightly-stretched skin and well-formed bones), but there’s no reason that must mean he’s just smaller all around. And if we are going strictly off the books’ information, there is an illustration in POA depicting Padfoot, Moony, and Prongs as being around the same height, with Wormtail noticeably shorter.
Minato is really the most open with his depression. He kinda stopped caring if people knew or not. The notion of nihilism at first provided comfort but soon began to envelop most of his waking thoughts. Similar to the movie, the dark hour is one of the few things that have gave his life meaning and he’s conflicted on letting that go or not
Souji tries so damn hard to hide his emotions and very few people ever get him to open up. He firmly believes that people only care for him for the support he provides and for the masks that he wears. The moment people realize he’s not the perfect honors student and friend that they believe and want him to be they’ll leave him. Souji can’t let that happen
Akira is just full of an impatient rage. His efforts to be the good samaritan left him with an assult on his record and feeling empty. He’s fed up with the world and just wants to get back at it. Conflicting emotions arise when he starts to consider if he’s acting as a phantom thief to save others or to satisfy his needs for revenge or as a way to channel that anger. The world turned him cold while simultaneously setting him ablaze
I feel like Reid’s mind is a fountain of information, facts and statistics and observations flowing freely and without stop. I also feel like, now that he’s been with the BAU for so long, that he now has the voice of Morgan in his head to tell him, “Woah, slow down there, pretty boy,” to get him back on track, and that makes me happy.
