TACO BELLE : Trick-Or-Treat! 2015 RECAP

No words will ever be enough to describe the joy I experienced bringing this costume to life. I was inspired by this random photo you see below, posted on Instagram sometime last year. I had been saving it in my camera roll always coming back to it and thinking, ‘can I really pull this off? does it make sense to make this costume?’

As some of you may have noticed by now, I like a challenge, and I like to execute my vision and imagination down to the ‘T.’ I’m also beyond obsessed with Taco Bell, or ‘Taco Bae’ as I like to call it. So my eternal love for TB, along with my creative spirit made for an absolute perfect union of unions for this years Halloween costume.

Now, in order to execute the costume I needed a ‘Princess Belle’ base/template. The adult costumes ran anywhere from $50-80 dollars, yeah, no! But just as my luck would have it, I stumbled upon this child size version at the thrift store for $7.99. Initially I thought, ‘who am I kidding, this will NEVER FIT ME.’ But like I’ve said, I like a good challenge.

I somehow managed to expand the template of the costume by taking it apart and creating a bustier top and bottom skirt piece. I basically took the existing fabric and covered a vintage bustier I found at the thrift store. While the back remained white, all that mattered was getting the essence of the front of her dress.

Overall the costume came out better than I had expected, which was a huge relief on my end. I think putting together the felt tacos was by far my favorite part. I kept telling myself, ‘this is too funny, ahh.’

I’m really glad I followed my instinct in creating this costume. Like I mentioned in my previous post, every year the ‘crazier’ or ‘out of the box’ ideas always end up making the best Halloween costumes.

Until next year my loves! Thank you for indulging me in all my creations this past month and for providing me with a platform in which to share my work.

Sending all of you lots of love and light,

DIY | Birthday In A Box: The Cupcake Baking Kit

A few weeks ago one of my best friends celebrated her birthday out of town. I wanted to make her a gift that would not only say, ‘I Love You!’ but make her feel like I was there to celebrate with her. After searching Pinterest for inspiration I decided to create this 'birthday in a box’ for her with a delicious twist to it.

Knowing how much my best friend loves Red Velvet cupcakes, I decided to include the basic ingredients to make her own cupcakes, while incorporating some humor into the box. Here is what I came up with:

  • Fancy Gift Box (re-useable, purchased at Michael’s)
  • Decorative Shred (use it to fill the box)
  • Framed Picture (decorated to fit the theme)
  • Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • Funfetti Frosting with Sprinkles
  • Cupcake Liners
  • BIrthday Candles
  • 'Birthday Girl’ Pin
  • Cupcake Headband (because she deserves to feel like a cupcake queen)
  • Miniature Triangle Party Banner
  • Glow In The Dark Sticks (to get the party started)
  • Fake Flower Arrangement (because every girl deserves flowers)
  • Ice Cream Cone Pens (they were too cute to pass up)

What I love about this birthday kit are the endless possibilities on how to customize it. Not only is it a thoughtful gift, it’s something you and the birthday boy/girl can make together. Enjoy!

Side note: I highly recommend cleaning your septum clip with some rubbing alcohol after each wear. Happy crafting!

Because nothing say’s, ’ I love you,’ like a personalized coffee mug! I have been making these mugs for years now, and I love how easy and inexpensive they are as gifts. These are perfect for your friends, co-workers or even your beloved this upcoming Love Day.

Customize them to your hearts desire by adding your favorite quote, song lyrics, or favorite doodle. I purchased the mugs at The Dollar Store, so yes, a little money can go a long way if you have a large list of gifts you’d like to make.

This technique also works on plates as well, so feel free to let your imagination run wild, happy crafting!

Sharpie Marks
Letter Stencils or stickers (optional)

DISCLAIMER: The tutorial is easy and inexpensive, but it doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve never had a problem with the sharpie pens washing off, but if you want a more secure method you can try try the Pebeo Markers or the ‘Sharpie Oil Based Paint Marker Set’ instead.

Because who doesn’t love a sparkly crystal? I’ve become obsessed with healing crystals in the past few months, and of course had to find some way to incorporate them into a tutorial. Not only do I use them for their healing purposes, but they are absolutely gorgeous as jewelry pieces as well.

In this tutorial I teach you how to create a very standard crystal ring using already pre-cut, polished, and ready to use crystals. You can oped to use your own crystals from home as well, but just keep in mind that you will need to improvise/customize the tutorial to fit the crystals onto the base of the rings using the ‘wire wrapping method.’

For the rings I choose a ‘clear quartz’ crystal, which is one of the most well known in the crystal community, along with Amethyst. Clear Quartz is known as the “master healer” and will amplify energy and thought. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy. It balances and revitalises the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. I encourage you to read more about ‘clear quartz crystals’ and other healing crystals, but if healing crystals are not your thing, they still make for beautiful jewelry pieces to wear.

Below you will find a full list of materials, as well as additional links to where you can purchase crystals online. I highly suggesting searching for ‘Crystal Shops’ in your area (Yelp APP) (for those of you who don’t have a Michael’s near by) first, before having to order them online.

Hope you guys love this tutorial as much as I do, and as always, sending all of you lots of love and light,

Drea

FANCY MADE X YIK’AL KUYUM UC DAVIS - DIY SWEATER RE-VAMP WORKSHOP (Part Two Recap)

How amazing are these sweaters?! Here’s a peek into some of the creations from the attendees of the UC Davis Sweater Workshop portion.

I was beyond blown away by the designs and creativity that went behind some of these re-vamp designs. The whole purpose of the workshop was to give ‘a hands on’ experience on taking an old garment, and 'making it new.’ Since winter is upon us, I figured it would be ideal to teach the UC Davis students fun ways to spruce up their winter fashion.

Again, thank you so much to Yi'Kal Kuyum and the UC Davis campus for allowing me to come teach! Truly an incredible experience.

FANCY MADE X YIK'AL KUYUM UC DAVIS - DIY SWEATER RE-VAMP WORKSHOP (Part One Recap)

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be invited to host a fun sweater revamp workshop at the UC Davis campus alongside the Chicano organization Yik'Al Kuyum. The workshop include a special presentation on how Fancy Made came to be, some in depth knowledge on the DIY community, and a fun fashion show featuring my designs. The emphasis of the fashion show was to visually show the type of things that can be re-created for a fraction of the price compared to that of a department store or online shop. I felt this information was specially crucial for the college student demographic, since unfortunately they tend to face the whole ‘poor college student, living on a budget’ type of lifestyle. Its extremely vital that we begin to create a movement on 'how to be resourceful’ under our economic circumstances.

Overall, the workshop from beginning to end was incredibly. I was extremely humbled by the amount of people who turned out for the event, specially by Da'Reen, one of my fellow Instagram followers. If you’re reading this Da'Reen, you truly made my night, thank you for taking the time to come out and meet me, truly a pleasure.

Also, a HUGE thank you to Yi'Kal Kuyum (The Chicano Latino Holistic Support Program) for the amazing opportunity, specially Jackie who helped run and plan the event with me from start to finish. A huge THANK YOU to all of my models who made my runway portion of the workshop possible! You ladies looked FABULOUS! And lastly, a million thank you’s to all of you lovely ladies who took time to make it! I had an amazing time meeting all of you! You truly are all an amazing group of woman who are going to make a huge impact on this world. Much love and best of luck with your studies!
