Hi I’m Sadie :) I am currently interning at my college on the governor’s Accelerated Energy Program and Toward Zero Net Energy goals. Parts of our retrofit include solar film, new lighting controls, solar PVs, small wind turbines, etc. My job is to engage people in conversation about how to create a sustainable campus. Beyond just raising awareness about this project, I want to encourage people to share their ideas and become involved. I also am looking for ways to encourage behavior……...

….(cont.) modification in terms of decreasing energy use. So far my platforms to achieve this include creating a Facebook page, putting up posters, and forming competitions. Do you or any of your followers have any other ideas for projects or ways to engage discussion from students, faculty, and the community? Kind of a vague question, but any input is valuable!!

You’re off to a good start with all that. How about surveying students and publishing the survey in the student paper? Also, the student paper could be a good platform via editorials and interviews. You could try talking to the Dean, too, to see how they feel about all of this, and get their statement.

Maybe you could hold a green energy and sustainability rally and fair. Does your campus already have an environmental group that would want to table there? What about sustainability resources in the community? Green energy companies? Master gardeners and farmers’ market organizers? Other eco-friendly efforts?

Most of all, figure out ways to explain to students and faculty how greener energy and other efforts on campus benefit them. What do they get out of it besides feeling good about helping the environment?
